fiction, non-fiction, and anthologized work. It is distinguished from the term "comic book",
which is used for comics periodicals.
The classic major genres of Literature are:
Satire: Satire is a genre of literature, and sometimes graphic and performing arts, in which
vices, follies, abuses, and shortcomings are held up to ridicule, ideally with the intent of
shaming individuals, corporations, government or society itself, into improvement. Although
satire is usually meant to be humorous, its greater purpose is often constructive social
criticism, using wit as a weapon and as a tool to draw attention to both particular and wider
issues in society.
Tragedy: Tragedy is a form of drama based on human suffering that invokes in its audience
an accompanying catharsis or pleasure in the viewing.
Comedy: Comedy in the contemporary meaning of the term, is any discourse or work
generally intended to be humorous or to amuse by inducing laughter, especially in theatre,
television, film and stand-up comedy.
Scientific Study of European Languages: Some scholars think that Indo-European
languages spread with farming techniques from Turkey across Europe and Asia 8,0009,500
years ago2. Others suggest that nomadic Kurgan horsemen brought the origins of Indo-

European language from central Asia about 6,000 years ago3. There is archaeological
evidence to support both theories, but genetic studies of Indo-Europeans have been
inconclusive, leading to an intractable debate among linguists, anthropologists and cultural
historians.
The majority view in historical linguistics is that the homeland of Indo-European is located in
the Pontic steppes (present day Ukraine) around 6,000 years ago. The evidence for this
comes from linguistic paleontology: in particular, certain words to do with the technology of
wheeled vehicles are arguably present across all the branches of the Indo-European family;
and archaeology tells us that wheeled vehicles arose no earlier than this date. The minority
view links the origins of Indo-European with the spread of farming from Anatolia 8,000 to
9,500 years ago.
