Viewing Worksheet The Social Network

Mark Zuckerberg
- Carefree genius
- Arrogant and impertinent
- Speaks rapidly, often in a complex language (ex. Computer language)
- Does not worry about consequences of his acts
- Gets more camera time, making him the main character

Eduardo Saverin
- Presented as the calm, rational friend
- Tries to keep Mark within certain boundaries, in vain
- Turns against Mark later (lawsuit), not so loyal
- Also intelligent, but very much normal; not as socially awkward as Mark
- Effective dialogue: planned, adapted to his audience, responsive, persuasion-seeking

Sean Parker
- Smart
- Exerts psychological power on Mark, influences him

Winklevoss twins
- Complementary to each other, quite comical
- Conscious of their image; planned discourse

Erica Albright
- Normal/typical girl
- Wants to have the last word
- Adds some normality (girl drama) to Marks life

Marylin Deply
- Not given much camera time or dialogue, but is present through all the lawsuits and
her reactions are shown

Facebook/social networking sites

Gender
- Men seem powerful, but there is a negative connotation to them (ex. When rating
girls on Facemash)
- Girls are victimized in many sections of the movie

Class/socioeconomics
- Inequality: The twins and Eduardo are richer, come from higher background.
Accepted by The Phoenix, more popular.
- Mark comes from a lower class, has to ask Eduardo for money to invest in the
business
- People tend to think Mark wants money misconceptions.

Harvard
- We know only what we see
- Movie tries to portray Harvard as a diversified university, not only a nerdy one (shows
parties)

College students
- Follow the norms (Work hard, party hard)
- Want to be famous

Friendship
- No loyal friendship in the movie lots of betrayals (ex. By Eduardo, By Mark)
- Mostly controlling relationships (ex. Sean)
- Unstable concept

Success (how it is defined by various characters, and with which definition are we supposed
to agree?)
- Mark wants to be remembered
- Winklevoss twins always successful, never any failure
- Sean making a name (similar to Mark. Reason why he can influence him)
- Eduardo Not getting into trouble, hanging out with the cool crowd, being social
- Erica Maintaining a good social life and reputation
