Jefferson Lab - Physics Library April 4th, 2014 Graduate Alumni Reception

Dear Harvard Alumnus,

On April 4th, my wife Anne and I had the distinct pleasure of attending a series of
presentations at the annual Harvard Graduate Alumni Day. Each year, Harvard hosts a
two day event for graduates, the first day of which is dedicated to a specific department
and the second a school wide graduate level event. On day one at the Reunion and
Symposium for Graduate Alumni of the Department of Physics, we enjoyed a sampling
of the ongoing research of the physics department in both theoretical physics and
experimental research being conducted at the University and undertaken by graduate
students. In addition to these demonstrations, many alumni gave presentations on the
broad range of benefits graduate level education at Harvard had on their individual
career. On day two at the Graduate Alumni Day for the College of Arts and Sciences, we
attended a highly informative keynote address by Louise Richardson (PhD 89) on the
lessons gained from the war on international terrorism as well as numerous symposia
being directed by fellow Harvard Alums on their ongoing studies. This was an astounding
two day display of leadership and engagement among both graduate students, alumni and
faculty members. Coupled with the news that Harvard has begun to fully fund the
graduate student program for both tuition and guided research, has strongly confirmed
my decision to participate in raising funds for this program something I have been
doing since my graduation.
I have been greatly pleased with the responsiveness with which our fellow alums have
shown to Harvards requests for funding. The participation of alumni in these fund
raising activities is essential for the continuity of these programs and the assurance that
Harvard will continue to be an innovative leader on the academic march towards the
future. By choosing to make a donation of at least $1,000 to the Harvard Fund before the
end of our fundraising efforts on June 30th you will be awarded Associate Donor status,

thus connecting you to other Harvard Alumni, the current student body and faculty.
Below I have included a few links to the Harvard Alumni weekend events my wife and I
attended. Also included above is a picture from Alumni weekend.
