Masterprogramme:
Educational Effectiveness and Instructional Design
Please click on the programme in the left menu for further information (outline,
modules) and the application form.
Through combining the strong American empirical tradition with the more European
qualitative and normative discussion about education in a social and historical context,
the Master in Educational Sciences teaches students to analyse education from a systems
point of view. This results in attention for the context, input, process and outcomes of
education. Central in this view is attention for ways to improve education and issues
related to the quality, efficiency and effectiveness of education.
The programme is interdisciplinary with the core curriculum choices offered within the
Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences. Depending upon student interest and thesis
topics, co-operation with other faculties regarding topics such as history of European
education, workplace education, information technology, research a nalysis & statistical
techniques or the economics of education is possible.
The Programme includes core modules from two of the main strands of the Dutch Master
programme most suited for International students. The first semester is reserved for
statistical, methodological and theoretical deepening and concentrates on educational
theory and practice. This semester must be completed by all students.
The last phase of the programme is the research component, where the student is required
to write a Masters thesis, supervised by a member of the academic staff within the
Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences. It is expected that students will have some
idea of a possible thesis topic, even if it is not yet sufficiently specific, before they begin
the programme and certainly during the specialization phase. Because of the comparative
and international nature of the programme, ideally theses will be researched in the
students home country and concentrate upon a particular matter of interest to educational
policy or theory in that country.
Admission Requirements
The scientific level and nature of the programme requires that applicants:
- have obtained a Universities bachelors degree in education or a bachelors degree in a
subject related to education;
- are knowledgeable about research methodology and related statistics (a diagnostic test is
available on the website);
We advise you to take these diagnostic tests before you apply for our course.
All applications are subject to an academic assessment by the Admission Board of the
Master Programme of Educational Sciences within the Faculty of Behavioural and Social
Sciences to determine if the candidate is suitable for admission in the programme and to
gain an indication of the research potential of the students thesis topic.
Career prospects
Our Masters Programme in Educational Sciences is developed for those who intend to
make their career in educational policy, research and practice at a senior level. Career
prospects for our graduates are as diverse as the students we attract; the programme is
flexible and can be applied to all sectors of public and private education and training as
well as to students own fields of endeavour. The programme is especially interesting for
those who are already working as educational professionals and who would like to
expand their basic knowledge and research skills.
Note that this programme has a strong academic orientation and is not a training
programme for teachers.
This Masters Programme is ideal for the enrichment and growth of professional
capacities in education, for example in the areas of research, learning and instructional
design, policy and curriculum development, history of education, educational
management and accountability.
The course is registered with the CROHO (Dutch Central Register of Higher Education
Study Programmes).

to improve their ability in reading a variety of texts, but also a modern approach of
learning and teaching French.
In order to get more practical experience, in my third school year, I worked as a manager
assistant at Nguyen Binh Khiem High School. My principal function is to monitor
students in their foreign language class. At that time, I realized that Vietnamese students
are too passive in class. Teachers are still the center of the class and IT equipment is not
used at their potential. For foreign language classes, teachers tend to focus excessively on
grammar and writing exercises. Consequently, even after spending three or four years
learning English with 10 hours per week, many students can not speak with foreigners in
their learned languages.
From these remarks, basing on academic knowledge and experience gained at college,
especially those of pedagogy, I made different proposals with more focus on open
activities. Students were promoted to speak loudly their thinking and try to act with
what they could. Result was rather encouraging. At least students found more pleasures in
class and getting high points was no longer their unique purpose. My contribution was
really appreciated by the head of school.
The situation in Nguyen Binh Khiem is just a rescaled image of Vietnamese education
system. The old concept in which professor is the only one having power has been proved
inadequate. It handicaps the progress of students.
At university, I had chance to get acquainted with new concept of education method.
Unfortunately, this knowledge at the level of bachelors degree is not good enough. I
hope that by joining your program, I can upgrade it and as a professional manger of
school, I will improve Vietnamese education system .
With my background, my determination, I believe that I can achieve good results from
your program. And I also expect to be one of those selected to receive your scholarship
for their quality and for their capacity to apply what they have learnt at school for a very
noble purpose: improve the quality of education.
