"The well being of a society depends more on the success of small business than on the
success of a few large, high-profile corporations."
I do not agree with the opinion stated above. In fact its mostly due to the large corporation that the jobs are created, roads and hospitals are built and societies prosper. Before 1912 Jameshdhpur was nothing but an obscure little village in the south-east of Madhya Pradesh a central state in India. But after 1912 once the Tata steel plant was built it became one of the most prosperous cities in India. Today it figures in the list of India's top 10 well planned cities. Same is the story it so many small towns and cities like Detroit, Tokyo, London, Mumbai etc these cities have been turned into one of the most modern cities of the world due to there industrialization. Although some of these cities have now turned towards soft jobs like IT, Finance and Consulting still the bulk of the population works in factories and earn the wages through sweat and toil. It also helps curtail the brain drain which was happening in emerging economies like India, China, and Brazil etc. Until Microsoft opened its R&D centre in China and India nearly 50% of the PhD professional from elite colleges like IIT, China@#$!@$ went to countries like Japan and US for work. The GE R&D centre in Bangalore also helped lot of Indians to stay in India and develop products and projects which could solve problems related to basic necessities and healthcare in rural India. Like one of the product developed, a portable x-ray machine, initially developed for rural villages in high altitude like Himalayas and Vindyas were roads access is difficult, are now being used in countries like US and UK by the costal and emergency help services to avoid delay of obtaining reports in hospital as they can now be obtained in mid air through these portable devices. It is companies like Ford, GE, Samsung, Toyota, Infosys, Dell, GM, Microsoft, Tata, Reliance, Shell etc, the list is endless, which creates and maintain thousand of jobs annually around the globe and not the smaller organization. These companies also spend millions, in some cases billions, of dollars for health, education and other research and awareness project for the well being of the societies. Having confirmed the important role of large corporation in a well being of a society, we cannot neglect the importance of small business. They have their own role to play in the well being of an economy. While the large corporation affects the overall GDP of a country and looks after the prosperity of cities, and town around them, in which they are situated. All said and done they affect only 20-25% of any countries population. What about the other 80%? Its only due to the small scale industries that the countries happiness is sustained. They are mostly the ones which produce the food products and act as raw material supplier to large corporation both in terms of men and material. They also avoid the mass exodus from village to city. Without them the large corporation and country in general would not able to sustain economic and social benefit. Therefore both the large and small corporation has to work & grow together. Only then societies can prosper and the well being of its people maintained.
