BIGbox

When you're looking to augment your sound with the tone-shaping capabilities of some of
the world's most well-loved speaker cabinets, then the BIGBox series is for you. Using the
same uncompromising signal chain used in our Speakerbox series, we've set out to capture
the magic of giant wooden boxes, with strategically placed holes, stuffed with insanely loud
cone-shaped bits of mayhem, and glued together with the blood, sweat and tears of three
generations of rock gods, grunts, and goram contenders... or something to that effect.
Mic Positions
We mic each sampled speaker from 8 positions. The primary positions include: Cap center,
Cap 45 off axis, Cap edge, Cap edge 45 off axis, Cone middle, and Cone edge. Then we
do a Room mic and a Back of the Cabinet mic.
The captured sound is brightest (contains the most high frequency content) at the "Cap
center" position and gets progressively darker (more lows and less highs) as you move the
mic towards the edge of the cone. Depending on the position and the mic distance, the mic
will pick up different aspects of the other speakers and the cabinet.
Each cabinet is sampled with a matched pair of Neumann KM84s and a pair of TC30s in an
XY configuration. These are labeled RoomL and RoomR. We also use a KM84 or TC30 to
sample the back of the cabinet. We reverse the phase of this sample. It picks up mostly low
end and may be useful when blended with a another mic signal.

The table above shows the number of impulse responses for a given microphone and mic position. The following mic distances were used: 0", 0.5", 1", 2", 3", 4", 5", 6", and 12", so
a "9" in a given cell means all 9 distances were used. For the "Null" position, we placed a figure-8 mic with its null point to the speaker cap, or 90 off axis.
* We sampled a 421 with the roll-off set to Speech and our assistant convinced us to keep it. "Ratty," was the word he used to describe it.
** We did 2 Back of Cabinet samples with an Audix D6 that aren't on the matrix
*** Under Ambient Mics there's an R121 which we placed directly in the center of the cabinet at 12"

Impulse responses of a '68 Marshall Basketweave 4x12 loaded with vintage Celestion G12Ls.
We acquired this cab with the intent of hunting down some good T1221 Greenbacks for it,
but we thought the G12Ls with their uber-mellow high-end would be a nice flavor to have
around. We did end up finding some nice Marshall-labeled, vintage T1221 Greenbacks, too,
so look out for those in the near future.

The table above shows the number of impulse responses for a given microphone and mic position. The following mic distances were used: 0", 0.5", 1", 2", 3", 4", 5", 6", and 12", so
a "9" in a given cell means all 9 distances were used. For the "Null" position, we placed a figure-8 mic with its null point to the speaker cap, or 90 off axis, at 24",30", 36".

Fender Twin JBL D120Fs

Impulse responses of a '67 Fender Twin Reverb cabinet loaded with vintage JBL D120Fs. The
D120s have more low-end than the C12Ns and a peak around 3700Hz, for distinctly edgier
upper-mids.

Fender Twin Jensen C12Ns

Impulse responses of a '67 Fender Twin Reverb cabinet loaded with vintage Jensen C12Ns. A
little less bass than the D120s and a peak around 2500Hz which gives it a crunchier sound
than the JBLs.

Supro Thunderbolt S6420 Jensen 15"

Impulse responses of a Supro Thunderbolt S6420 cabinet with the original 15" Jensen
speaker. Decent low-end for a small, open-backed cabinet, a boost around 550Hz that gives
it some mid-range "honk", and crunchy upper-mids.
