Introduction
The Total Access 1500 Expansion Kit (P/N 4192RK5K5FL1) adds a Total Access 1500 to the
following cabinets containing a Total Access 5000 OSP System:
288-Line Cross Connect (288X) Cabinet (P/N 41925K288XL1/L2)
480-Line Cross Connect (480X) Cabinet (P/N 41925K480XL1/L2)
The addition of this expansion kit provides the capacity for up to 96 additional DS0 Special
Circuits.

material when transporting or storing. When working on modules, always

Shipping Contents
The Total Access 1500 Expansion Kit consists of the components listed in Table 3. After
unpacking the Expansion Kit, inspect it for damage. If damage has occurred, file a claim with
the carrier then contact ADTRAN Customer Service. Refer to Appendix A, Warranty and
Customer Support for further information. If possible, keep the original shipping container
for returning the Expansion Kit for repair or for verification of shipping damage.

The Expansion Kit does not include Total Access 5000 or Total Access 1500
modules, which are purchased separately. The Total Access 5000 modules
listed in Table 4 are required for the Total Access 1500 Expansion. The Total
Access 1500 modules required vary, depending on the particular application.

Installation
The installation procedure consists of the following main steps:

The following tools and materials are required to install the Total Access 1500 Expansion Kit:
Digital multimeter
Wire wrap tool
Wire strippers
Side cutters
Phillips-head screwdrivers #1 and #2
Flat-head screwdriver
Rack screws (4)
Antioxidant compound (such as NO-OX-ID)

Chassis Installation and DC Power/Ground Wiring


To install the Total Access 1500 Chassis and connect ground and power wiring, complete the
following steps:
1. Install the Total Access 1500 Chassis in the rack directly below the Total Access 5000. Use
at least two rack screws per side. For more information concerning the installation of the
Total Access 1500 Chassis, refer to the Total Access 1500 Chassis Job Aid (P/N 61180001L122) and the Total Access 1500 Chassis Installation and Maintenance Practice (P/N
61180001L1-5).
2. Swing the rack open to access the rear of the Total Access equipment.

NOTE
Apply antioxidant compound to all ground and power interfaces before
making wire connections.
3. Connect the Total Access 1500 ground wire provided in the kit between the ground
terminal on the Total Access 1500 backplane (see Figure 7) and the rack.
4. Connect the primary and secondary DC power wires (48V and RTN) provided in the kit
between the DC power system and the Total Access 1500 power terminals as follows:
a. Connect the ring terminal ends of the four power wires to the primary and
secondary 48V and RTN terminals on the Total Access 1500 backplane according
to the wire labels (see Figure 7).
b. Connect the unterminated ends of the primary 48V and RTN wires to GMT fuse
position 2 on the DC power system.
c. Connect the unterminated ends of the secondary 48V and RTN wires to GMT fuse
position 3 on the DC power system.

NOTE
Do not install fuses for the Total Access 1500 until directed later in the
procedure.

Data Connections
Make data connections between the Total Access 1500 and Total Access 5000 as appropriate
for the cabinet model as follows. Refer to the schematics in System Diagrams on page 5 as
needed.
1. At the rear of the Total Access 5000 Chassis:
a. Disconnect the Champ cables from the following slots.
288X cabinet - slots 10, 11, and 13
480X cabinet - slots 19, 20, and 21
Label the cables from slots 10 and 11 (288X) or slots 19 and 20 (480X) with their slot
numbers as they will be reused later in the procedure.
b. Remove the LMIO2 panel from the following slots:
288X cabinet - slots 13 and 14
480X cabinet - slots 19, 20, 21, and 22
c. Install the LMIO2-CH50D (P/N 1187401G1) provided in the kit over the following
slots. Refer to the Total Access 5000 Line Module Input/Output Dual Champ 50-Pin
Divided Rear Panel Job Aid (P/N 61187401G1-22) for installation instructions.
288X cabinet - slots 13 and 14
480X cabinet - slots 19 and 20
d. In the 480X cabinet only, install an AMIO2 Blank (P/N 1187923G1) over slots 21 and
22. Refer to the Total Access 5000 Access Module Input/Output Blank Panel Job Aid
(P/N 61187923G1-22) for installation instructions. The AMIO2 Blank is not used in
the 288X cabinet.
2. Connect the male Champs on the Y cables to the newly installed LMIO2-CH50D on the
Total Access 5000 backplane as follows:
a. Connect the male Champ labeled LOOP1/TX-OUT to the TX OUT LOOP 1
connector on the following slot:
288X cabinet - slot 14
480X cabinet - slot 20
Torque the captive Champ screw provided to 3.6 in lbs. Secure the lower end of the
Champ cable to the LMIO2-CH50D using one of the cable ties provided.
b. Connect the male Champ labeled LOOP2/RX-IN to the RX IN LOOP 2 connector
on the following slot:
288X cabinet - slot 13
480X cabinet - slot 19
Torque the captive Champ screw provided to 3.6 in lbs. Secure the lower end of the
Champ cable to the LMIO2-CH50D using one of the cable ties provided.
3. Locate the two cables that were disconnected from the Total Access 5000 and modify the
male Champs so they can mate with the female Champs on the Y cables:
a. Replace the screw at the top of the Champ with the 0.400-inch captive Champ screw
provided in the kit.
b. Remove the clip at the base of the Champ as shown in Figure 8.

4. Connect the female Champs on each Y cable to the male Champs that were formerly
connected to the Total Access 5000:
a. Connect the female Champ labeled LOOP1/TX-OUT to the male Champ formerly
connected to slot 10 (288X) or slot 19 (480X). Tighten the screw at the top of each
Champ to secure.
b. Connect the female Champ labeled LOOP2/RX-IN to the male Champ formerly
connected to slot 11 (288X) or slot 20 (480X). Tighten the screw at the top of each
Champ to secure.
5. Wire wrap the DS-1 wires on the Y cables to the Total Access 1500 backplane according

Alarm Wire Connections


To make alarm connections between the Total Access 5000 and the Total Access 1500,
complete the following steps:
1. Remove the protective cover from the SMIO3 alarm input connections on the Total
Access 5000 backplane.
2. Wire wrap the Total Access 1500 alarm cable wires between the Total Access 5000 and
the Total Access 1500. Refer to Figure 9 for the alarm wiring schematic and Table 7 for
connection details.
3. Replace the protective cover on the SMIO3.

DLC Converter Cable Connections


A Total Access 1500 96-Pair D4 to DLC Converter Cable (P/N 1180011L4) is provided in the
Expansion Kit to convert the standard D4 pinout to a DLC pinout for connection to the cable
leading to the protection block. To connect the DLC converter cable, complete the following
steps:
1. Connect the DLC converter cable to the rear of the Total Access 1500 as follows (see
Figure 10):
a. Connect the Champ labeled T/R (A) to the PAIR 1 T/R connector on the Total
Access 1500.
b. Connect the Champ labeled T1/R1 (B) to the PAIR 2 T1/R1 connector on the Total
Access 1500.
c. Connect the Champ labeled E/SG (C) to the PAIR 3 E/SG connector on the Total
Access 1500.
d. Connect the Champ labeled M/SB (D) to the PAIR 4 M/SB connector on the Total
Access 1500.

2. Connect the Champ labeled PA to the cable that was formerly connected to Total Access
5000 slot 13 (288X) or slot 21 (480X). Tighten the screw the top of each Champ to secure.
(The Champs labeled PB, PC, and PD are for future expansion and are not connected.)
3. Replace the existing door labels with the new labels provided in the kit.

Table 8 (288X) and Table 9 (480X).

NOTE
F1 cross connect assignments for the 288X and 480X cabinets match the

Turn Up
To turn up the system, complete the following steps:
1. Install the 7.5A GMT fuses provided in the kit into fuse positions 2 and 3 on the front of
the DC power shelf.
2. Install the Total Access 1500 power supply unit (not included).
3. Verify that the Total Access 1500 powers up (the green power LED on the Total Access
1500 should light up).
4. Verify proper voltage (54 VDC) at the Total Access 1500.

Maintenance
The Total Access 1500 does not require routine maintenance for normal operation. Do not
attempt to repair the Total Access 1500 in the field. Repair services are obtained by returning
the defective unit to ADTRAN. Refer to Appendix A, Warranty and Customer Support for
further information.
