Lesson Title: Subtraction

Materials Needed:
-The Hersheys Kisses Subtraction Book by Jerry Pallotta
- document camera
- projector
- manipulatives (at least 20 per student)
- white board
- markers
- Find the Difference fish worksheet
Prerequisite Skills:
Addition skills, an idea of subtraction take away
Being responsible and respectful while using their unifix cubes.
Standard(s):
1.0A.A.1 Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction.
Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of
adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all
positions, eg., by using objects, drawings, and equations within a symbol for the unknown
number to represent the problem
Lesson Objective(s):
The students will be able to use concrete objects to solve taking from subtraction problems.
1. Provide objectives: (What are students going to learn?) Time:1 minute
Today friends we are going to practice our subtraction skills that we started learning this week.
You are going to be useing your unifix cubes to practice taking away.
2. Demonstrate knowledge or skill: (Input/Modeling by the teacher)
Time: 10 minutes
Were going to start with a little chocolate to help us with our subtraction skills! While reading
the story I will pause on many of the first few equations Each of the items will be counted on the
page to help the students We may use manipulatives if the students need extra assistance or a
visual other than what the book provides while we are reading.
3. Provide guided practice: (Guided practice with the teacher)
Time: 3 minutes
This will fit in with the story as well. After having demonstrated the equations on the first pages I
will have the students go step by step with me through a few of the other equations throughout
the story with me.
4. Check for understanding and provide student feedback: (How will you know students
understand the skill or concept? How will they know they get it?)? Time:1 minutes
I will write a random equation on the whiteboard and have them students demonstrate and show
me how we take away and also give me the correct answer to the equation. Was a students has

shown me their answer and how they solved it they will be given the Find the Difference fish
worksheet.
5: Provide extended practice and transfer: (Independent practice of the skill) Time:10
Once all the students have been give a worksheet and are at their desk with only their crayons, a
pencil, and their fish worksheet out I will go over the directions. The students will be expected to
solve all equations and write the answer on the fishs tail before they can move on to coloring the
fish the corresponding color.
6. Assessment / Closure: (How do you evaluate student progress or provide closure to this
lesson?) Time:3 minutes
We will check the worksheet together as a whole class. I will use the document camera to have a
blank worksheet shown so that the students can follow along. This will give the students a
chance to explain how they solved the equation as well as correct any mistakes they may have
made on their worksheet.
7. Plans for differentiation:
The students that are having a difficult time grasping the concept I will have them sit closer to
the teacher so I will be able to provide them with the extra support that they need. I may also
make the equations a bit less complex to that it is easier for them to grasp the concept of taking
away. While working on the worksheet I will have some friends work with the associate so that
she can give them more direct instruction that will help them. I will walk around to monitor the
students work and help those that may need assistance on some of the equations.
