Characteristics

Production is an organized activity, so every

production system has an objective.
The system transforms the various inputs to useful
outputs.
It does not operate in isolation from the other
organization system.
There exists a feedback about the activities, which is
essential to control and improve

Types of Production System

Continuous production
refers to the production of standardized products with
a standard set of process and operation sequence in
anticipation of demand.
Job or unit production
It involves production as per customer's specification
each batch or order consists of a small lot of identical
products and is different from other batches.
Intermittent production
the goods are produced partly for inventory and partly
for customer's orders.

Production Planning and Control

the process of planning the production in

advance, setting the exact route of each item,
fixing the starting and finishing dates for each
item, to give production orders to shops and
to follow up the progress of products
according to orders.

Objectives:

Systematic planning of production activities to achieve the

highest efficiency in production of goods/services.
To organize the production facilities like machines, men,
etc., to achieve stated production objectives with respect
to quantity and quality time and cost.
Optimum scheduling of resources.
Coordinate with other departments relating to
production to achieve regular balanced and uninterrupted
production flow.
To conform to delivery commitments.
Materials planning and control.
To be able to make adjustments due to changes in
demand and rush orders.
