1.

A reciprocating engine of mass m1 is mounted on a cantilever steel beam of

length b, width a, thickness t, and Young's modulus E, as shown in Figure A5-1.
A steel cable-mass system is suspended from the beam as indicated in the
figure. The cable length and diameter are l and d, respectively; while suspended
mass is m2. A harmonic force, F1(t) = F0 cos t, is developed in the engine during
its operation.

The suspended rod and mass will become an absorber if they can cancel
the engine vibration. For m1 = 40 kg, b = 1 m, a = 12 cm, t = 2.5 cm, and
E = 200 GPa, design the absorber for the following requirements:

F0 = 20 N and = 3600 rpm.

The diameters of available cables are 1 mm, 1.5 mm and 2 mm.

The length of cable should be less than 1 m.

The available suspended masses are 2 kg, 3 kg and 4 kg.

The amplitude of vibration of the suspended mass should be less

than 2 mm.

2.

A hollow steel shaft of outer diameter 6 cm, inner diameter 4.8 cm, and length 80
cm carries a solid disc J1 of diameter 50 cm and mass 60 kg, as shown in Figure
A5-2(a). Due to rotational harmonic loading on the disc, the system experiences
a very large vibration at its natural frequency. To absorb the vibration in the
natural frequency, another hollow steel shaft carrying a solid disc is attached to
the first disc, as shown in Figure A5-2(b).

(a)

(b)
Figure A5-2
Design the absorber for the following requirements:

The material of the hollow shaft is steel, where G = 80 109 Pa.

Inner diameter of the shaft should be 0.80 of its outer diameter.

Maximum outer diameter of the shaft is 2 cm

Maximum length of the shaft is 60 cm.

The available discs J2 for absorber are

o
diameter 10 cm and mass 8 kg,
o
diameter 15 cm and mass 10 kg, and
o
diameter 20 cm and mass 15 kg.
