1 HP4 Type Supply Pump Outline

The HP4 type is the second generation of pumps for medium size trucks, realizing a higher pressure than
pumps from other manufacturers (180Mpa.)
Using the basic construction of the HP3 pump, the HP4 pump further improves pumping volume.
When compared to the conventional HP0 pump used in medium size trucks, the HP4 pump is compact and
lightweight.

2 Construction and Primary Features

The basic construction of the HP4 supply pump is the same as for the HP3. In addition the functional parts,
pump unit (eccentric cam, ring cam, plunger), SCV (Suction Control Valve), fuel temperature sensor and
feed pump are the same as for the HP3 pump. However, the HP4 differs in that it has three plungers.
Because there are three plungers, they are positioned at intervals of 120 around the outside of the ring
cam. As a result, the fuel delivery quantity of the HP4 pump is 1.5 times that of the HP3.
Just as for the HP3, the HP4 fuel discharge quantity is controlled by the SCV.

3 Component Functions
The HP4 supply pump component parts and functions are basically the same as for the HP3. However, the
following will explain parts and functions that differ.

Pump Unit Construction

A triangular ring cam is attached to the camshaft eccentric cam, with three plungers attached at intervals of
120.

Fuel Pumping Operations

When the camshaft rotates, the eccentric cam rotates in an off-center fashion. The ring cam follows this
motion, moving the three plungers up and down in a reciprocating motion. (The ring cam itself does not rotate.)

4 Supply Pump Operation

1

Supply Pump Overall Fuel Flow

Fuel is suctioned by the feed pump from the fuel tank and sent to the SCV. At this time, the regulating valve
adjusts the fuel pressure to below a set level.
The fuel sent from the feed pump has the required discharge quantity adjusted by the SCV, and enters the
pump unit through the suction valve. The fuel pumped by the pump unit is sent through the delivery valve to
the rail.

Fuel Delivery Quantity Adjustment

The HP4 pump employs the same method of SCV control as the HP3 pump, adjusting the valve opening
based on duty ratio.
The only difference from the HP3 pump is the shape of the pump unit. Operation and control are basically the
same. For details on operation and control, refer to the previously published explanation of the HP3 pump.
