Statement of Scope for the Annotated Bibliography
Every child needs the love and care from their parents but there comes a time in your life
when that becomes too much. Many parents are ignoring the fact that their children are growing
up which is causing them to continue to control the teenagers as if they were still much younger.
This often causes teens to get frustrated because they are never getting the chance to grow
individually and become their own person. Many believe when teens have overbearing parents it
subjects them to reckless behavior but I believe it is an independent choice. While some teens
may argue that having overprotective parents pushes them to drink and experiment with drugs, I
concede that it just creates distance in the parent-child relationship.
This essay will explore the reasons behind teen drinking and who is affecting teens
decisions. While controlling parents are continuously blamed for underage drinking, I feel the
parents factor into is irrelevant. Teens partying on the weekend is an individual choice If that
specific teen wants to drink they are going to whether they are on locked down or have complete
freedom. By that age teens know right from wrong and they know the choices they are making. I
do not believe wild behavior comes from a kid trying to rebel. Continuing on, the biggest fault
with overbearing parents is the strain it puts in their relationship with their child. This is when
teens get very good at lying. Instead of telling the truth about where they are going when they
know they will get rejected they lie so the can go out.
This bibliography includes topics talking about teens drinking underage more and more
each day. In some cases kids are starting to drink between sixth and seventh grade. That just
shows kids are acting out whether the parents care or not. There are also reports of kids smoking
marijuana even when the parents are right next door. Some parents believe their adolescents are
getting up to mischief anyways so they might as well be at home safe. The conflict of how much
freedom do give your teen has sparked up many debates. As explained in the article 50% of 17
year olds have been at parties with parent supervision and a majority of the kids reported lying
about where they go when they go out. Therefor, the parents arent affecting their teens life by
telling them they can or cant drink. They are just more likely to get lied to if they say no.

This article says kids are going to drink anyway, so they might as well do it at home,
under adult supervision. Restricting teenagers makes no sense when theyll be on their
own in college soon enough. The author examines toxic parents, stressing that few
parents realize until they are deep into the battle to keep their kids safe that the enemy is
often other parents.

an emotional roller coaster. They have intense hormones, and they get angry and upset
easily. They are trying to separate from their parents and become more autonomous, but
they still desperately need their parents, experts say. This leads parents confused not sure
whether to be over protective or let them run free.
