Curing, particularly within the first few hours after
concrete placement, is one of the most important
factors in manufacturing top quality precast
concrete products. Properly cured precast
concrete will achieve both superior early strength
and long-term strength. Properly cured precast
concrete products are also less permeable, more
durable and display greater surface hardness.

within the initial 10 to 20 hours, and involve a
releasing large amount of heat during the
hydration. Stage four will primarily occur over the
first few days, but continues for weeks. Actually,
as long as concrete has access to moisture, the
curing process of stage four will continue.
Concrete that is exposed to air at an earlier stage
will have a lower strength and an increased
porosity. The chart below shows how significant
this effect is.

UBOND Shield is a unique liquid penetrant

comprising a VOC free NANO SILICA base with an
extremely small and spherical molecular structure.
When applied via an airless sprayer UBOND Shield
to the surface of porous concrete it completely
fills the matrix capillaries and penetrates the free
cement particles in the concrete to increase the
hydration of the concrete thus improving the
strength and surface hardness of the concrete
matrix.
In this way it provides a permanent moisture
barrier up to 200 mm deep, it prevents the ingress

our carrier it can penetrate capillaries very
deeply, far in excess of conventional silicates
and "active" crystalline products developing a
colloidal gel similar to the calcium silicate

With the use of UB SHIELD technology in precast
products, the industry can regain some of its
market share over costly alternative technologies
that have threatened the industry in recent years.
As a Barrier Coatings - Solvent or Water-Based
UB SHIELD is used as a water barrier prior to
applying coating systems such as epoxy, polyurea,
and polyurethane coatings. UB SHIELD ensures
that no moisture can attack the polymer coatings
bond during the service life of the concrete
Coatings are applied over concrete. A major
problem for coating manufacturers and their
applicators is "pin holes caused by the tiny air
and/or moisture pockets escaping from the
capillaries and pores in ready-mix concrete, and
precast concrete products such as pipes, pilings,
retaining wall blocks and bridge decks. Removing
"pin holes is a time consuming and expensive
activity for polymer applicators - a problem easily
solved by the use of UB SHIELD as a "pre-primer
for concrete surfaces.
UB SHIELD ensures that capillaries are blocked
permanently - thus turning the concrete surface
into a suitable substrate for the application of
coatings. In addition, UB SHIELD ensures that no

untreated, moisture can cause the coatings to debond from the concrete substrate.

9. Most traditional adhesives fail when the pH is

above 10.

When UB SHIELD is applied to the concrete, it

penetrates as deep as the surface capillaries will
allow. The moisture and high pH is sealed below
the concrete surface where it cannot affect the
coatings or adhesives. Trapping the high pH below
the surface is also beneficial for protecting
reinforcing steel from corrosion.

UB SHIELD deeply penetrates deep into the

concrete, reacts with free alkali in the concrete,
and forms a colloidal gel in the tiny concrete
