area and distinct features/names of each bird
Students will learn how to make a bird feeder and what
birds eat/why bird feeders are important in our
community

identify the physical features of the birds to conclude to
the name of the bird
What The Teacher Needs To Know:
Information about the kind of birds in the area and
characteristics of the birds
General information about the habitats of birds
How to build a bird feeder (look at the beginning of the
lesson to get ideas)

How to use PowerPoint Microsoft and how to make slides

for a Power Point
Why Is This Important? (ISTE Standards)
1. Distinguish among facts, reasoned judgment based on
research findings, and in a text: This lesson is created to
have students observe birds and reflect on their
knowledge from the text given to them in order to identify
certain birds.
Lesson Plan:
Before You Start The Lesson:
Set up a Power Point that goes over general information about
birds, their habitats and the birds that are native to our area.
Also make an example bird feeder by putting the cheerios onto
the pipe cleaner and securely connect the two ends of the
pipe cleaner together.
Lesson:
Have group discussion with students and on what they
know about birds. Discuss features and characteristics of birds
and where they live to see how much they know.
Then present the Power Point and involve the class in what
they know about bird habitats and bird feeders. You can also
divide the class into small groups to talk about what they know
about birds and bird habitats.
Next introduce the activity and explain that they will be
making their own bird feeder put outside and see if birds will
come to eat from it. From there we will observe the birds and
see if any of them can be identified by their features or by the
pictures presented in the Power Point.

Give each student a pipe cleaner and a handful of

cheerios. Show them an example you have made so they can
get an idea of what they will be making. Then have the
students work on making bird feeders and walk around the
classroom to see if students need assistance.
Once students have made their bird feeders take them
outside to a safe area and have them hang their bird feeder
on a tree branch.
Take the students outside later to observe their bird
feeders and see if any of the cheeriors are gone. If there are
birds nearby or at the bird feeder have the students write down
their observations of the bird by features.
If there are observations have the students come back
inside and discuss and evaluate if the bird can be identified
from the features that were recorded.
This can be a one day assignment or a unit assignment
and can be extended .
