R EA DERS R EACH OUT

The idea behind Readers Reach Out is simple: You are invited to
submit your handcrafted cards to various charitable organizations
across the country. It is a wonderful opportunity to reach out and send
greetings to people who need some cheer and good wishes.

Your Next Theme Is School Spirit

CardMaker reader Donna Gamber wrote in and shared the following note: My
daughter-in-law is a high school guidance counselor. For the past few years, at the
start of school, I give her about810 cards that I have made for her to give to students,
teachers, principals, etc.The cards carry different messages such as: Congratulations,
Best Wishes, Get Well Soon, Good Job, Thank You, Happy Birthday, Have a Great Day,
etc. I incorporate the school colors into the design of the cards.
Contact your local
schools or youth groups
today to see if they
can use a donation of
handmade cards to
share with the youth
they serve.

She has told me that people, especially students,

appreciate receiving these cards throughout the year.
This is a fun project for me and can be easily adapted for
elementary or secondary teachers, principals, etc.
So, CardMaker readers, lets reach out to our local schools or
area youth groups to see if theres not a way we can encourage the youth they serve with handmade cards today!

YOU!

Suggest an Organization
We would like this program to benefit
people all across the country. If you
know of an organization that would
welcome handcrafted cards for those
it serves, please send a note to us at
Editor@CardMakerMagazine.com.
Groups such as childrens hospitals,
nursing homes, military groups and
cancer treatment centers often
welcome card donations.
Thank you for sharing your time and
your handmade cards with others
in need.

Project Valentine Recap

Leading up to our Assembly Day, we realized something big was about to happen.
We had already received more than 30 packages full of valentines from around
the country. It was amazing! I told the board we had been featured in CardMaker
magazine and might be receiving even more.
In total we received valentines from 43 people, and not just valentines, but supplies
too. With an average of 12 valentines per package (often many more), we received
at least 600 valentines from CardMaker readers. Thank you to all the card makers
who helped the 470 men, women and children feel so much better on their infusion
day. We at Project Valentine have a special place for you in our heart.

HOW READERS REACH OUT WORKS

In each issue of CardMaker, we will feature a new recipient organization and appropriate card theme. Using the theme as a
guideline, create as many cards as youd like, and mail them to the address provided. Please indicate somewhere on your shipment
that you are participating in CardMaker magazines Readers Reach Out efforts. This helps both the organization and us keep track of
all card donations.

MEET THE DESIGNER

Teresa Collins
B y Br o ok e Sm it h

Join us as
we visit with
designer and
teacher Teresa
Collins as she
shares with us
what inspires
her and more!

As a well-known designer and teacher in the crafting industry, Teresa Collins

strives to create products that make it easy for others to capture treasured
memories in their lives. She believes its important to document your story so
that the journey is never forgotten. Her signature product lines with Xyron,
Craftwell Inc., and Teresa Collins Stampmaker display her classic and chic
style, shaped by her interior design background. Besides dreaming up ideas
for new products, Teresa is a sought-after teacher who travels around the
world sharing new techniques and projects with others. She has made national
television appearances along with having her own weekly online show each
Monday on My Craft Channel. Were excited to welcome Teresa to CardMaker
as she gives us a peek into her creative life!

Please tell us a little bit about yourself and how you

got started designing.
I am so blessed to be both a well-known product designer and teacher. I love to
create and design projects and products with both meaning and lots of eye candy.
I am known for incorporating my interior design background and experience
into my scrapbook and crafting work. As a product designer, I own and oversee
Teresa Collins Designs company and brand. I am known for creating the latest
and greatest in the crafting industry. I am passionate about sharing my love of
documenting and telling a story. I love photography, trying new techniques and
incorporating my own handwriting in my scrapbook pages. I design products,
tools and machines to help crafters enjoy and better create. I began to create in
2002 when my mother unexpectantly passed away and I created a memory book
for my family to remember her. It changed me, and I knew I needed to continue to
tell the story of my life for my children and family.

Where do you find inspiration for your designs?

I love home decor, fabrics and quotes. I am inspired by life, and I want to
create projects that are both beautiful and can be used to tell a story. I travel
so much and I always make it a point to visit the local shopping centers and
shop and look for new and upcoming trends.

You travel all over the world teaching classes. What is your
favorite thing about teaching?

See more of
Teresas work

at www.teresacollins
designsblog.com.

I love to see how and what the students are creating. I want to know what
inspires them. Afterwards, I am inspired to come home and design new lines
from watching them and hearing their wants and needs in crafting.

What are the top five paper-crafting supplies you cant

be without?
Stapler, pop-up adhesive dots, Mega Runner, scoring tool and liquid adhesive.
Yes, I have designed most of these with Xyron.

TIPS & TECHNIQUES

Stair-Step Cards
B y K i m b er Mc Gr ay

Have you ever seen the fancy fold and the stair-step style cards and
wondered how they make those? Me too! For this article I set out to
figure out the secrets of these cards. There are side stair-steps, center
stair-steps, centers that have a main panel that pops up and so many
more. The varieties are mind-boggling. With these cards, you have to be
very specific with where the scores and folds are placed so they lay flat in
the end and can be put into an envelope.
While there are a lot of tutorials on how to create stair-step
cards, I found many of the cards were larger than a standard A2 card
(41/4 x 51/2 inches). I prefer this size of card for its ease of mailing. After
spending some time playing around with a lot of cardstock, I was able to scale down the
popular designs to fit in a standard-size envelope. To create all of these cards, you will
need a paper trimmer and a scoring board or scoring blade for your trimmer. The success
of these cards comes with precise measurements, perfect cuts and crisp folds.

Card Art With

Alcohol Ink Pens

B y S a r a Na u m a n n

Ill confess it now. I am not a colorist.

I admire those card makers who use alcohol pens to
shade, blend and highlight their stamped images. The detail
is amazing and so realistic.
Inspired by these techniques, I took a class on coloring with
alcohol pens. Bravely, I sat in the front row then proceeded
to hide my less-than-perfect attempts each time the
1
instructor walked by! In the end, I realized that detailed
coloring was simply not my thing.
Yet all those lovely alcohol pens were just too tempting to ignore,
so I set out to discover other techniques that use alcohol markers.
Imagine how excited I was to discover that alcohol pens could be used for so
much more than realistic coloring! These pens are ideal for creating backgrounds, colored
card focals even for use with stencils! Best of all, these techniques are really forgiving
perfect for the non-colorist who loves alcohol pens!

Supplies Needed:
Spectrum Noir alcohol
markers (Crafters
Companion)
Neenah Classic Crest Card
(Crafters Companion)
Acetate
Stencils (The Crafters
Workshop)
Craft Sheet (Ranger)

A Bit About
Alcohol Pens

Alcohol pens are made up

of ink and an alcohol-based
solution. Lighter colored
pens have more alcohol than
darker pens, which means
they can also be used to
dilute darker colors of ink.
Alcohol ink is designed to
be fast drying, so these pens
are perfect for coloring nonporous surfaces like acetate. With blending techniques,
you do need to work quicklyyet layering on top of dry
color can give even more interesting effects.
For all of these techniques, I used Spectrum Noir pens.
I like that each pen has a broad chisel tip thats ideal for
creating bold stripes and blocks of color; the detail tip
allows you to get in to smaller areas with precision. And
the color range well, its enough to inspire even a noncolorist!

{ 30 }

Three Techniques to Try

Lets take a look at three easy ways to use alcohol ink

pens (and stencils) to create some easy card focals and
backgrounds. Each one is simple to do and very forgiving!

Stencil Shape Coloring

This is a very relaxing technique. Trace, color, then add a
shadow effect by outlining each of the stencil shapes. The
outlining adds dimension and helps disguise any areas
where you might accidentally go outside the black lines.
Step 1: Place your stencil on
the paper and trace with a
fine-tip black pen (Photo 1).
Step 2: Color the shapes with
teal and lavender (Photo 2).
Step 3: Outline the lavender
shapes with purple; outline
the teal shapes with pale
blue (Photo 3).

CARD-MAKING TRENDS

WorldMags.net
Acetate Plaid
Overlapping colors on
acetate is a great way
to create a customized
background. Place it
on white cardstock to
show off the design, or
4
layer it onto a stenciled
cardstock for extra dimension.
Step 1: Create a plaid pattern on acetate (Photo 4).
Step 2: Place a stencil on a piece of white cardstock and
spray with ink (Photo 5).
Step 3: Layer the two and attach with brads, staples or
eyelets (Photo 6).

Bold Shape Coloring

Coloring a large, bold image is a great way to play with
color application and layering. Best of all, theres no right
or wrong way to do it. After all, feathers (and leaves and
flowers) come in all different shades. Use the chisel tip for
large areas then switch to the fine tip for smaller areas.
Work quickly to blend, or slowly to build layers of color.
Either way will be beautiful!
Step 1: Trace the feather on your paper with black pen.
Step 2: Lay down large blocks of red color. Add lighter
orange and red shades, overlapping the colors (Photo 7).
Step 3: Outline with the darkest red color (Photo 8).
7

Pick Your Paper

Whats the most common problem card makers

encounter with alcohol pens? Feathering or bleeding
when the ink spreads as it soaks into the paper.
The type of paper or cardstock you use with your alcohol
pens is really important. Computer/copy paper, textured
paper or paper with a grain will soak up the ink and
spread it quickly.
Glossy paper can be used for fun background techniques,
but be aware that the ink will dry on top of the paper
rather than soaking into the fibers. Watercolor paper can
also be used, but it will have the opposite effect and soak
up the ink.
Specially designed cardstock such as Neenah Classic Crest
Card is created to work specifically with alcohol pens.

Storage Tips

Its best to store your Spectrum Noir markers lying flat.

Why? Storing pens vertically means the ink settles to one
end or the other. Keeping them horizontal distributes the ink
evenly. I keep mine in a shallow plastic container, although
there are pen caddy organizing systems availablea great
idea if you acquire a large collection of pens.
If youre traveling with your markers for classes or crops,
lay them flat for about 10 minutes before using them. This
allows the ink to re-settle in case theyve been shifted to a
vertical position in transit.
Sources: Spectrum Noir markers, Neenah cardstock and Heat-Resistant
Acetate from Crafters Companion; Stencils from The Crafters Workshop.

Top 3 Tips

Protect your table with a craft sheet; alcohol ink can stain!
When you buy your pens, make a quick color chart on a piece of paper
designed to work with alcohol ink. While the colors are printed onto the
pen caps, its often easier to choose a color from seeing it on paper.
These pens are refillablewhen they run dry, you can pick up ink refills
to make the most of your pen investment!

Copic Coloring Technique:

Feather Blending
B y C ol le en S c h a a n

Use the feather-blending technique to create gorgeous

wings on which a lovely butterfly can flit and flutter.
This month Im tipping my hat to the current ombr
fashion trend. Whether its in clothing or hair, the popular
fad of colors or tones shading or blending into one another
is hot, hot, hot! That makes this the perfect time to jump
on the coloring bandwagon to master the feather-blending
technique.
Feather blending, sometimes referred to simply as

guidance, it might just bedifferent color families
come one of your favorites.
Step 1: Begin by picking two markers from different color
families. Note: It is much easier to blend colors from families
near each other on the color chart, such as blue and green or
yellow and orange or pink and purple. The samples use B32
and BV01.
Step 2: Start by flicking one color (B32) from the edge
of the image toward the other edge. I typically start on
the right side and flick toward the left, but you can start
wherever you are most comfortable. Dont flick all the way
across the image; stop about 2/3 of the way across. Use the
side of the brush nib and make multiple light flicks to
cover the area (Photo 1).
Step 3: Using the second color (BV01), make flicks from the
uncolored edge toward the inked edge. Flicks should overlap
and fade into the first color. Note: It may be easier to rotate
the paper before adding the second color. The colors will

{ 64 }

CardMaker SUM M E R 2 0 1 4

appear streaky and unblended at this point (Photo 2).

Step 4: More ink is necessary to create a smooth blend, so
add additional flicks of the first color (B32) to saturate the
overlapping area. Note: The leading edge of the flick stroke
will darken with each layer (Photo 3).

Step 5: Add additional flicks of the second color (BV01),
saturating the overlapping area (Photo 4).
Step 6: Continue adding ink, rotating between colors to
create a smooth blend.
Step 7: Once the overlapped area is blended, you can
touch up the edges by filling in any gaps and uncolored
areas (Photo 5).

Picking Colors
When selecting colors for the feather-blending technique,
here are a few helpful tips to keep in mind.
Colors closest to each other on the color wheel
are easiest to blend.
Lighter shades (colors ending in a 0, 1 or 2) are
easier to blend than darker colors.
Use colors with similar shades to avoid overlightening or difficult blending.
Dont use complementary colors. They will gray
each other out and appear muddy.
Practice using easy color blends until you master the
technique, then begin using more difficult color blends
to strengthen your skills (Photo 6).
6

Tips & Tricks

Use the side of the brush nib

to create wide, smooth flicks.

Make sure the markers are juicy.

Dont worry about the leading
edges of the strikes;
those areas can be filled in after
the image in blended.
Always feather in the direction
of the object (Photo 1).

If you feather outside

the line, cut the image
out.
Color only one section
at a time (Photo 2).
Create your very own
ombr effect with
the feather-blending
technique (Photo 3).

GETTING ORGANIZED

WorldMags.net

Our Creative Space

B y Ta ny a Fox

In addition to having the perfect

papers, adhesives and embellishments,
I think every card maker either has or
dreams of having the perfect system
for keeping all of his or her supplies
in order. If youre like Brooke and me,
you love browsing Pinterest, other
designers blogs and your favorite craft
store or website for the perfect storage
items and ideas. On the CardMaker
blog, the Creative Space posts that
share a look at other designers craft
areas is a favorite with our readers.
Here in the CardMaker office,
Brooke and I share a work space
with the other editors at Annies,
where room for our craft supplies
is somewhat limited. Recently we
decided that our creative space and
craft storage area needed a little
makeover. Brooke and I spent some
time browsing the assortment of
craft-storage options that were
available and selected a number of
modular pieces from Go-Organize
that we felt best fit our needs.

{ 78 }

CardMaker SUM M E R 2 0 1 4

The shelved units were ideal for

designer paper and cardstock.
The two- and three-drawer units
worked perfectly for anything from
adhesives, to punches, to stamps
and ink pads and embossing powders.
We especially like that there are
clear-front options. Each cube is
constructed of durable, high-quality
MDF fiberboard; the assembly is so
easy; and they stack securely, which
is also important. We love this area!
While we were on our little mission
to get our space organized, we added
this handy desktop Giraffe Ribbon

WorldMags.net

Organizer, and these must-have Stamp

Storage Binder Boxes from Taylored
Expressions.
We also made a
trip to our local
craft store and
picked up these
cute little jars to
store our colorful
assortment of buttons, with larger
jars to display
pretty washi tape.
Burlap-covered
boxes store miscellaneous supplies and keep our
area looking tidy.
We have a few more creative ideas
that wed like to implement for our work
area, but for now were just going to enjoy our newly-organized space. Perhaps
well have some updates to share with
you in the not-too-distant future.
If you have favorite organizing ideas
to share with us and other card makers, wed love to hear them! Drop us a
line at Editor@CardMakerMagazine.

of flower. In the same manner, create one
additional punched blossom flower.
11. For punched hydrangea, begin by
rolling a 3-inch length of pink
quilling paper into a Tight
Coil (see illustration). Use
3-in-1 Hydrangea medium
to punch a flower from pink
cardstock; only the largest
of the three pieces will be
used to create the hydrangea.
Discard the other two pieces. Punch three
1/8-inch circles from white cardstock. Glue
three circles to center of flower; glue
Tight Coil to back of flower. In the same
manner, create one additional punched
hydrangea flower.
12. For modified

cardstock. Use 5-Petal Flower punch to
punch two flowers from white cardstock.
In the same manner as in step 12, snip
petals and shape flowers using 2mm embossing stylus for black flowers. Layer and
adhere flowers together offsetting petals
as shown. In the same manner, create two
additional mini anemone flowers.
14. For folded
rose, begin by
slipping the
end of an
8-inch length
of magenta
quilling paper into
slotted tool from the
left. Holding the tool vertically in right
hand and the strip in left hand, roll the
tool clockwise to the left a few times to
secure the paper. This will be the center of
the rose. With left hand, fold paper strip
up at a 90-degree angle. Continue to roll
the tool toward the left, rolling over the
fold. At the same time, gently lower the
strip with left hand to return it to a horizontal position. Repeat this folding-androlling process until you reach the end
of the strip. Slip rose (which has formed
upside down) off the tool, allow it to
relax, and shape folds gently as desired.
Snip off excess strip length and hide end
by gluing it under rose. Repeat to make
a second rose using a 16-inch length of
3/4-inch-wide red quilling paper.
15. For leaves, begin by rolling a 4-inch
length of deep green quilling paper into a
