LIBER IA VOTES 2014 - YOUR GUIDE TO THE 2014 SENATOR IAL ELECTIONS
Tuesday, December 2, 2014

Monroviahe grounds of the nations highest court, the Supreme

Court of Liberia is expected to be the center of attention
today as the court hears into a petition filed by some
eminent Liberians and political parties against the
holding of the 2014 special senatorial election.
Fourteen out of the sixteen political parties have distanced
themselves from the petition and are describing the petitioners
as those who feel they cannot win a democratic election and are
opting for an interim administration by thwarting the holding of
the senatorial election.
On Friday, Justice in Chambers, Cllr. Philip A.Z. Banks, acting
on a writ of prohibition filed against the National Elections
Commission of Liberia by individuals and at least two political
parties issued a stay order on all activities regarding the pending
December 16, senatorial election but fourteen political parties have
described the action of petitioners as an attempt to suppress the
democratic process and drag the country into interim arrangement.
The fourteen political parties Monday signed a resolution
committing their political institutions support to the conduct of the
December 16, 2014 special senatorial election as was previously
agreed by the legislature, political parties and the National
Elections commission.
Reading the petition on behalf of the political parties, Cllr. Joseph
Jallah of the Alliance for Peace and Democracy called for massive
support from all political parties and other Liberians against the
prohibition, inviting a huge turnout at the court today (Tuesday).
Rallying Foot Soldiers
We call on all political leaders, the ranks and files, foot soldiers
of all political parties and other citizens in mass to assemble on
the grounds of the Temple of Justice at 8 am on Tuesday 2nd
December 2014, in solidarity with hearing of the prohibition
proceedings, said Cllr. Jallah.
The Parties declared While we respect the rights of the petitioners
to pursue the legal course, we, the political parties represented
and assembled in this hall, wish to disassociate ourselves from the
petitioners and their petition.
Unwarranted and unjustified
The parties described the action of the petitioners as unwarranted
and unjustified stating that the two other political parties forming
part of the petition committed themselves to the electoral process
and reaffirmed their support to the democratic tradition as
expressed in the holding of a free, fair and transparent and credible
elections and see no reason why they decided to go against the
process.
The parties also claimed that holding the election will prevent
an even bigger constitutional crisis as the tenure of 15 senators
expires in January 2015.
The risk of not holding the elections is far greater than conducting
the elections this year. We wish to also remind the pubic that
our political parties fully participated in all of the consultations
during which the vast majority of political parties and civil
society organizations agreed for the special senatorial election to
be conducted on December 16 in order to save the democratic
process, the parties stated in their petition.
They described as counter-productive and unacceptable their
colleagues call for a sovereign national conference as a substitute
for the special senatorial election.
According to the fourteen parties, they see no rationale for the
national conference because according to them the people have
spoken through their representatives in the legislature through
a joint resolution mandating the NEC to conduct the special
senatorial election on the 16 of December.
Further, the political parties also claimed that facts available
by international organizations including the World Health
Organization (WHO), the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and
the Ministry of Health and other international partners suggest that
the process can be conducted with adherence to safety measures
contrary to the petitioners justification of Ebola outbreak as a

reason for cancelling the special senatorial election.
We cannot reverse the democratic process. All registered
political parties including two of the petitioners NDC and MPC,
participated fully in the consultations leading to the new date
for holding the special senatorial elections. The petitioner does
not therefore represent the view of the majority of the registered
political parties, they further stated in their statement.
Adhering to Ebola measures
The political partys representatives including ranking officials of
various political parties committed themselves to adhering to all
the necessary safety measures on Ebola instituted by the Ministry
of health and its international partners and called on the NEC to
as much as possible publish the list of polling centers across the
country for easy access by the public.
They also denounced all acts of violence and want the NEC bring
to book violators and urged the Supreme Court to expeditiously
dispose of the matter pending before it.

NEC MEETS WITH POLITICAL PARTIES

Monrovia he National Elections Commission (NEC) on Saturday, November 29, 2014 held an emergency meeting with heads of
registered political parties and independent candidates contesting the 2014 Special Senatorial Election to inform them about
a Supreme Court Stay Order on the 2014 Special Senatorial Election.
The Stay order which was issued by the Justice in Chamber of the Supreme Court, His Honor Philip A.Z. Banks, III.,on
Friday, November 28, 2014, instructs the Commission to cease all activities in respect to the pending Special Senatorial Election until
further notice.
The Order further mandates the Commission to inform all Senatorial candidates and political parties by all available communication
facilities and avenues, including the airwaves, that the Senatorial election activities and campaigns are suspended pending the
disposition of a petition for a Writ of Prohibition filed against the conduct of the election by some citizens, political parties and civil
society organizations in Liberia.
Hearing into the Petition will take place at 9:00 AM on Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at the Temple of Justice.
During the meeting, the Political parties and candidates mandated the Commission to put into place all the legal mechanisms in
support of the conduct of the Special Senatorial Election on December 16, 2014.

The Supreme Court must listen to the voices of majority of

the political parties and the voice of the citizenry the parties
cautioned.
Political parties that signed the resolution include; Unity Party
(UP), Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), Liberty Party (LP
in distance) National Patriotic Party (NPP), Grassroots Democratic
Party of Liberia (ALCOP), Union of Liberia Democrats (ULD),
and peoples Unification Party (PUP) and the Alternative National
Congress (ANC).
Others include; Alliance for peace and Democracy (APD), Liberia
National Union (LINU) and the Liberian Transformation Party
(LTP)
The Parties statement was in response to a stay order placed on
election activities by the supreme court of Liberia as a result of
a petition filed by the Concerned Group of Eminent Citizens,
the Movement For Progressive Change (MPC) and Leaders of
Political Parties and Civil Society Organizations (CGEC) by
and thru its Spokespersons Blamoh Nelson and J. Emmanuel Z.
Bowier, John Ballon, Milton and Nathaniel Barnes, l of the City of
Monrovia, Montserrado County, Republic of Liberia
The petitioners prayed the high court to issue an Alternative Writ
of Prohibition against the National Elections Commission and
electoral magistrates.
According to the petitioners the power to elect officials is inherent
in the people and as such holding election in the wake of a major
health crisis poses serious risk to the population.
The petition states that Article-1 of the Constitution acknowledges
and affirms that All power is inherent in the People and in order
to ensure democratic government which responds to the wishes of
the governed, the people shall have the right at such period, and
in such manner as provided for under this Constitution to cause
their public servants to leave office and to fill vacancies by regular
elections and appointments.
Justice Banks told FrontPageAfrica that the stay order was
necessary to pave the way for NEC to file a response to enable
further hearings into the petition by the court.
Todays decision of the court will decide whether Liberians will
have the opportunity to elect 15 senators one from each of the 15
counties come December 16 or otherwise.

GIVE BEACH FAHNBULLEHS LETTER TO FPA

OWNERS A BREAK
Governments Regulations to keep entertainment
spots shut must be enforced across the board, not
just the few lacking access to powers
SHUTTING DOWN beaches to curb Ebola is a good
thing; so too is the shutting down entertainment centers
or discouraging gatherings of people.
IN A YEAR Liberia appears to be moving ahead with
senatorial elections in spite of a Supreme Court order
putting a hold on further political and campaigning
activities, nothing can be taken for granted.
THE DECISION by the Government of Liberia to
shut down beaches on November 29th, inarguably the
biggest holiday in Liberia today, was greeted favorably
by a majority of Liberians and even beach owners and
owners of entertainment centers within the proximity
of beaches.
THE ORDER READS: Ebola can be spread through
bodily contact. Avoid going to the Beaches until
Liberia is declare Ebola free. LNP says keep all
beaches closed. Ebola is real and it kills, LNP says
Ebola is real, prevent it by keeping all beaches closed
Nov. 29th and beyond. Help protect yourself and your
family members lives.
THE ORDER MAKES sense for beaches to be closed
on the 29th but we agree with the beach owners that
there be some leverage in terms of having the beaches
open on weekdays to enable them to keep up with their
payments to the banks, pay employees and feed their
families.
WHAT MANY beach owners appear not to be in
agreement with is the fact that the order does not seem
to be across the board.
LARTAY SWEN BATTIE, an owner of a beach business
in Mamba Point is one of several beach owners pointing
out disagreements with the governments decision and
accusing authorities of picking and choosing which
businesses within close proximity of the beaches to
shut down. The government has said we should lock
down our businesses until Ebola leaves Liberia when
we are not the only ones who have activities going on.
If you go to Lela Browne, a club next door to Mamba
Point Hotel, you will see that it is opened from 6 p.m.
to 6 a.m. and if you go to Mamba point hotel bar, it
is open and people are enjoying. Does it mean Ebola
cannot go to these places? This law is only for the
poor people who cannot fight the government. Or is it
because I am not Lela Brown or Mamba Point or Cape
Hotel? The government has shares in most of these
hotels so they are protecting their interest
BEACH OWNERS LIKE Battie make sense. The
government must never allow itself to appear that it is
playing favorites by keeping certain upscale or wellconnected business establishments to remain open
while enforcing its might on those less-connected
businesses operated by those struggling to make ends
meet.
LIBERIA MUST prove that it can win the war against
Ebola and also ensure that ordinary Liberians are not
deprived the right to eat and feed their families.
THE ECONOMIC IMPLICATIONS of Ebola has
been enormous and taking a toll on every Liberia,
especially business owners.
IT IS IMPORTANT that authorities meet business

Scott Mandeh smandeh@hotmail.com, Contributing Writer

r. George Fahnbulleh writes the FPA Editor to

assert that Mr. George Werner, the Health Minister
designate, is not qualified to serve as minister. His
letter comes few days after the Liberian Senate
rejects Mr. Werner based on the criterion that Mr. Werner lacks
the qualification to confirm him as Minister of Health.
To me, the issue is not worth the debate anymore as to note the
consolation Mr. Fahnbulleh has received that Mr. Werner has
been denied by the Liberian Senate. But if qualification in
Mr. Fahnbullehs opinion was the litmus test for performance
in public service, one may wonder if Mr. Fahnbullehs assertion
is not fueled by some inherent bias or double standard he has
entertained toward Mr. Werner. While the public may not be
fully aware of the details of the terms and conditions that informs
the decision to confirm a nominee to public office, historical
precedence convinces us that the senate has often been liberal on
issues of confirmations. I believe it has always been the judgment
of the senate to use the wisdom of discretion when it comes to
confirming presidential nominees because of the need to break
the barriers of ethnic, social, religious and political cleavages that
once characterized the body politics of Liberia.
Mr. Fahnbulleh should, therefore, not be unmindful to the fact that
the archive of political appointees by past and present governments
is loaded with names of people with diverse qualifications, some
as weightless as mere high school diploma and others with PhDs.
It can then be surmised that Mr. Werners rejection by the senate
is untimely or at worst pure bad luck as we would call it back
in Liberia. This is because the senate has confirmed others with
either questionable credentials or no experience for the positions
to which they were appointed.
For example, let us reflect on the history of Mr. Robert L. Kilby
who was appointed to head the General Auditing Commission of
Liberia: Kilby, as we all know presented fraudulent credentials, but
was still reconsidered by the senate based on other considerations.
Clearly, the Kilbys nomination created a circus of emotion in
our communities. His confirmation claimed the attention of the
general public. But where was Mr. Fahnbulleh and what was his
position?
Let us fast forward to recent appointments in government by
President Sirleaf. The President appointed a number of Liberians
along with Mr. Werner. Mr. Fahbulleh did not call out any of the
appointees credentials or work experiences except Mr. Werner.
This makes me to deduce that Mr. Fahnbulleh has something
under his sleeves toward Mr. Werner.
For the sake of clarity I want to cite Mr. Gyude Moor as reference:
Mr. Moore was appointed as Minister of Public Works at the same
time George Werner was appointed Minister of Health. His job
among other responsibilities is to plan, design, execute, test, and
supervise public infrastructure development bridges, roads,
buildings, etc.
Typically, one may argue that a Minister of Public Works should
be a technician, well versed in the practices and theories of
engineering or related fields. I believe the president defied the
tradition of relying solely on specific credential to appoint Mr.
Moore due to recent experience at the Ministry of Public Works.
Minister Weeks, the former Minister of Public Works was seen as
credible based on her credentials. But she probably fell short of
expectation not on the basis of qualification but on the basis of the
lack of tender will to make a difference.
Sometime we let the so called requisite qualities or experience
get in the way for us to see other essential managerial qualities
that far outweighs the requisite qualities. In Fahnbullehs
Republic, I strongly believe that the former minister, Kofi Woods,
for example, could not have been the rightful person to head the
Ministry of Public Works. But Minister Woods tenure at the
ministry is considered by most Liberians and President Sirleaf as
valuable. As a result of this, I am made to believe that the moral

test we face in our political transition is how we treat those in the

dawn of public service.
I, therefore, encourage Mr. Fahnbulleh to dig his heels from the
sand of sentiment and focus his attention on issues of practical
evidence. Mr. Werner has served in government with dedication.
Mr. Werner was at the Civil Service Agency two (2) or more
years as head of the Scholarship Program prior to becoming
the Director General of the Civil Service of Liberia. He has an
advanced degree in Social Work, which is one of the essential
components of the health delivery system of Liberia, as it is called
the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare. Mr. Werner has a
direct work experience providing social services for many years
in the United States. A further research with Mr. Werner coworker
proved that he worked as lead Clinician Therapist for AVS Allegheny Valley School- under a licensed ClinicianTherapist
supervision.
What Mr. Fahnbulleh needs to understand is the Liberian Health
System has experienced one of the worse tragedies due to the
Ebola epidemic. Therefore, it calls for transformative leadership
that accounts not only for the physical health of the state, but
also the social values, research, ethics and best practices that will
restore confidence in the system and its people. We believe Mr.
Werner stands at a vantage point of providing active direction for
the Ministry of Health in meeting all of these considerations.
Unfortunately, Mr. Fahnbulleh has not acquired the knowledge
base to appreciate the credential of Mr. Werner. As such it is worth
the time to digress a little to enlighten Mr. Fahnbulleh what makes
Mr. Werners qualify for the job. For the record, Mr. Werners
Qualification enables him to serve as Minister of Health given
that he has been trained to effectively understand the issues of
rights and justice, assist, support and enable Liberians who have
suffered from the negative effects of Ebola and other diseases and
inequalities in the health care delivery system. His training also
equips him to deal with issues of systematic failure by advocating
and advancing policies to correct risks to which the health of the
state is currently exposed. Mr. Werner is also poised to act as
leader because his training has positioned him to understand the
context of the diverse communities and the necessary approaches
to locate the needs of the members of those communities in the
context of their social and economic lives.
I will caution Mr. Fahnbulleh to be guided by history and
examples. That way, he will be careful to render judgment on
the merit of profession. Mr. Fahnbulleh should remember that
even in the great United States, the Secretary of U.S. Department
of Health & Human Services (Sylvia Mathews Burwell) - the
equivalent of Liberia Ministry of Health - is not a Medical Doctor.
But she brings a wealth of managerial skills to the position. She
is described as A results-driven manager. Her Bio can be found
here - http://www.hhs.gov/secretary/about/biography/index.html.
I cant resist asking this question in closing: I understand that Dr.
H. Boimah Fahbulleh, Jr. is Mr. George Fahnbullehs brother. If
that is true, then I believe Mr. Fahnbulleh has a good memory of
his brothers political profile. What direct educational experience
did his brother, Dr. Henry Biomah Fahnbulleh, Jr. possessed when
he was appointed Minister
of Education in the early 1980s?
Technically, we can all say zero, nada, zip, nothing He was
simply a lecturer at the University and a political activist. Dont
get me wrong. Dr. Fahnbulleh is an astute and well respected
statesman. But at the time of his appointment, he has no requisite
experience or credential in the discipline of Education.
I, therefore, call on Mr. Fahnbulleh and others who share similar
view to give Mr. Werner the chance to fulfil his calling. It was
not naive on the part of the president to repose confidence in this
young Liberian. There is no greater satisfaction than to test the
worth of a simple, regular citizen, chosen among the young people
to make a difference.

owners half way on this all important issue. If beach

owners are being told to shut down until Ebola is out of
our midst, then such an order must go across the board.
WE CANNOT have a situation where the government
has a curfew in place from 12pm to 6am and certain
businesses are open and encouraging people to dance in
a congested environment exchanging fluids and sweats
while others are complying with the laws.
WE CERTAINLY cannot have a situation where beaches

are being told not to operate until Ebola is eliminated

and some upscale owners are getting a free pass.
THE LAWS must be enforced on all and not just a few,
the laws must not pick and choose and the law must
ensure that while we fight to beat Ebola, we must
give each and every citizens the confidence that the
government is on their side and not solely in existence
for foreign nationals or those with access to the powers
that be.

NO EBOLA IN

MERLINSON K. YARDOLO
Who is to be blamed here? So-called GOL or candidates? The GOL
through NEC shouldn't have set timetable for election admst ebola.
Ellen thought her son Robert could win, but after seeing WEAH's
crowd, she's using the supreme court to stop the election. Where
was the supreme court when NEC released election timetable and
guidelines?
KULA S JOHNSON
Am with you Elijah Barnard it comes as a total shock to me for
someone to compare katrina to the deadly virus which is still looming
over the country and could easily be trigger by such a huge gathering
. Justice Banks is right, postpone the elections till ebola is completely
eliminated., we shouldn't put the livrs of the ordinary people at risk
because of our own selfish gains .who is suppose to win will still win
even if election is held next year . Let us think with our heads and not
our mouths
Just concern oh , loyalist shouldn't jump on me

Mr. Bryant, there's no comparison. How can you have election in the
midst of such an epidemic only because people want power?
Swenpanneh Amos Obtrack Tealeh
Its the government dat give the rite to NEC to carry on the election.
So body grief for power. Those hw r the there terms are over.

How can you compare Katrina in the U S with ebola in Liberia? In my
wildest dream I never believe anyone could make such comparison.
Wooooo Ooooooh.

A man walking down the street saw a plastic bag ,he paused then

but then turned and opened it ,tasted the content and shouting "thank

Gorgeouspk PK Christopher Bryant man you comparing Hurricane

The NEC and Supreme Court should have seen this coming. This
should not be a surprise. How else did they expect candidates to
campaign? Texting? Something else is going on in Liberia. Ebola was
there when the NEC authorized campaigning.

The actions taken Mr.Musa Bility is anti-democractic and uncivilized.
These kinds of tendencies need to be discourage by any civiliized
individual, this is not the kinds of Liberia we are advocating for
Doris Maholo Saydee
Let's wait for the hearing on Tuesday but I know this announcement
is just a show. Otherwise, Senatorial candidates should take the
government to task for all expenses so far. They were aware of the
risk but ignored all the warnings for their greed.
Archiemore Fredericks
Are you comparing the EBOLA epidemic to hurricane Katrina and
the H1N1? Look at the what happened with just one case of EBOLA
in the state of Texas. Some members in congress wanted to shutdown
every border in the country. Every news outlet aired the EBOLA
story 24/7 and you are complaining because the Liberian Supreme
Court halted the elections to help prevent the continuous spread of
this deadly virus? Even a selfish want-to-be politician owes this
to the Liberian people. In New Jersey, governor Christy forcefully
quarantined a nurse that returned from West Africa. Whenever you
make an accusation, bring something tangible to back it up.

No election, we agree, but come January, we will call for interim

GAME ON; LIBERIA

ELECTIONS
The Editor,

For the past 9 years, we hired our soon-to-be-ex-senators to work for

us, but every day, they dress up drunk, come to work late, and blow
hot air up our asses! And now they want us to hire them for 9 more
years? For what? To blow more hot air up our asses?? Please..(Re
"Game On..Liberia's Election...)
Article 1 of our Constitution states that "....In order to ensure
democratic government which responds to the wishes of the governed,
the people shall have the right at such period, and in such manner as
provided for under this Constitution, to cause their public servants
(no, they're not public servants! they're born rogues!) to leave office
and to fill vacancies by regular elections and appointments"
So it's on you and me to throw these bums out of office!!! Therefore,
I'm asking you to sing a song to our soon-to-be-ex-senators: (sung to

GEORGE OPPONG WEAH

WOULD ADD ONE OF THE
THINGS THAT IS MISSING
IN THE LIBERIAN SENATE

The Editor,

oday I am humbled and very pleased to announce my

overwhelming endorsement for Mr. George Manneh
Oppong Weah senatorial election bid. Mr. Weah has not
only brought pride and joy to Liberia in many instances,
especially during the days when our country was a failed state, his
name and talents were the only identity that shined light on Liberia in
many corners of the world from 1990 to 2003.
While I do understand that there are many good people in the
Montserrados senatorial race, all of whom could do great things in
the Liberian senate if elected, however, I strongly believe the best
choice that Montserrado County and the people of Liberia have in
adding real value to the Liberian senate is a choice for George Weah
of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC).
Liberia needs a senate that is not only overly political and stands
on the receiving end of pay checks, corruption and bribery; it also
needs talents, vision and creativity. Weah is asset to Liberia in that
his presence in the senate could rejuvenate Liberias best policies on
sports and its capacity as a sports giant in Africa, thereby generating
not only revenue, but placing many young Liberians in better financial
positions abroad and in-country. I also believe that Mr. Weah could
serve as a catalyst for
tourism in Liberia because we will work with him to push for policies
that will make Liberia a robust tourist destination.
A senator Weah will add a social value to the Liberian senate because
of his talents and contribution to sports. As the late South African
icon Nelson Mandela put it: *Sport has the power to unite people
in a way little else can. Sport can create* *hope. Breaks down racial
barriers laughs in the face of discrimination speak to people in a
language they can understand.*

asked to respond to such rumors.

Guinea,
Liberia,
and Sierra Leone, and is
projected to result in negative

these countries next year as
they work to eradicate the

Economic Impact Update
released today by the World
Bank Group. The report
comes as World Bank Group
President Jim Yong Kim
begins a two-day visit to West
Africa to assess the epidemic's
impact and discuss with
governments and international
agencies what steps need to be
taken to reach the goal of zero
cases as soon as possible.
This report updates the
World Bank Group's October
8 analysis of the economic
effects of the Ebola crisis on
the three hardest-hit countries.
GDP growth estimates for
2014 have been revised
sharply downward since precrisis estimates to 2.2 percent
for Liberia (versus 5.9 percent
pre-crisis and 2.5 percent in
October); and 4.0 percent
for Sierra Leone (versus 11.3

Sunday with his family.
My niece who was attending
service in some church called
me, she came out crying because
some one had announced that
I was infected with Ebola,
he said in an Interview with
FrontPageAfrica on Monday.
I was driving and my wife
picked the phone and she (niece)
said oh, someone is saying
that you have Ebola, and she
responded and said but hes
sitting beside me, were on our
way home from service. As soon

as I got home, the second call

came from a colleague working
with me in the unit and said
someone called and asked if you
are ok.
The medical doctor who has
been treating people affected by
the deadly virus since it entered
Monrovia said he was surprised
that people would spread such
rumors and not try to make sure
of its authenticity.
He said he has been trying to
figure out what he did wrong
over the days before the rumors
began to spread that would lead

the people to think that he has

Ebola.
And I said I dont know where
the people took their myth or
their belief from, but Im ok.
Im not sick, he said. I tried to
retrospect on the past three days
before Sunday, on my activities,
the patients Ive encountered,
I never saw anywhere where
I personally felt I went wrong
in terms of taking all safety
measures as much as possible.
Dr. Brown said he not only work
in the ETU but also renders
regular healthcare delivery at

the ELWA Hospital to patients

and pregnant women. He was
supervising his staff in the
hospital as one of them was
drawing blood from a pregnant
womans vein. The medical
doctor who is considered by
many as a miracle worker due to
the number of people who have
survived Ebola at his ETU said
the survival rate today at the
ELWA-2 ETU is about 70%.
He said health workers have
to be more meticulous when
dealing with patients at the
ETU or at the regular healthcare
centers. He said due to the drop
in the number of Ebola cases,
healthcare workers might tend to
be a bit lax in terms of safety.
Now we try to be more careful
than before, with the manner in
which we have cases dropping,
he said. I keep telling the
workers, this is the time we
need to be more careful because
someone may want to take things
for granted instead of being more
vigilant. Dr. Brown said as a
doctor working with Ebola cases
everyday, he has had flashes
of terrible nightmares after
working long hours in the ETU
and watching people including
children he hoped would live,
die despite showing signs of
recovery in the ETU.
To be frank, most of us working
in the unit, live in fear everyday.
As you work everyday, you are
living in fear, he said. We may
pass around as though we are
strong, as though all is going well
with us, but psychologically, we
too have some problems.
He said he comes close to

Page 5

thinking he himself might be

infected while treating patients
and at times he has to avoid his
own family if hes not sure of
how hes feeling on a particular
day.
At times I do get afraid, I
wonder whether Im infected.
There are many times it has
happened to me, he said. I try
to avoid my family members
up to a situation where I start
having light headache or maybe
I think Im having fever, when
I use my thermometer and
still have normal temperature,
I begin to ask myself whats
happening. Am I infected but not
symptomatic?
The Ebola Epidemic continues
to slow in Liberia but there are
still many cases coming into the
ETUs everyday. The US Centers
for Disease Control states that
about fifty cases are reported
daily in Liberia. Despite this
the CDC credits Liberia for the
substantial progress the country
has made thanks to health
workers like Dr. Brown who
work in these ETUs.
I think Liberia does need
to be congratulated for the
considerable progress that has
been made. But at the same
time with that progress comes
difficulties because it gets more
difficult to finish that last mile,
said Dr. Kevin DeCock of the
CDC at a news conference in
Monrovia on Monday.
Like Dr. Brown He said there
are two important dangers facing
Liberias fight against Ebola,
namely complacency and the
new normal where people just
accept that Ebola is a part of
the region when in fact it would
have been unimaginable a year
ago that West Africa could have
Ebola and it could spread to
urban areas.
He said the two could lead the
country to losing the ground that
it has gained in its fight against
the virus.

the existing epidemic, but

In addition, the World Bank
Group is now projecting
negative growth for 2015 of
-0.2% in Guinea (down from
pre-crisis estimates of 4.3
percent and 2.0 percent in
October) and -2.0% in Sierra
Leone (down from 8.9 percent
and 7.7 percent in October). In
Liberia, where there are signs
of progress in containing the
epidemic and some increasing
economic
activity,
the
updated 2015 growth estimate
is 3.0 percent, an increase
from 1.0 percent in October
but still less than half the precrisis estimate of 6.8 percent.

These latest projections imply

three countries in 2014-15

"This report reinforces why
zero Ebola cases must be our
goal. While there are signs
of progress, as long as the
epidemic continues, the human
and economic impact will
only grow more devastating,"
said Jim Yong Kim, President
of the World Bank Group. "As
we accelerate the immediate
health
response,
the
international community must
also do everything we can to
help the affected countries
back on the road to economic
recovery and development."

The report finds that the total

fiscal impact is more than half
a billion dollars in 2014 alone,
imposing additional budget
needs of more than 6.0 percent
of GDP in Liberia, more than
3.0 percent in Guinea, and
more than 2.5 percent in Sierra
Leone. Governments have
also been forced to cut public
investments - such as Liberia's
Mount Coffee hydroelectric
plant, which now remains
on hold in the absence of
foreign contractors - by more
than $160 million across the
three countries, hurting future
growth prospects.
In October, the World Bank
Group released a report that

Taylor-Ta, Yellequlleh District,

Bong County
iberias Ambassador
to the United States
of America, Jeremiah
C.
Sulunteh,
has
donated three hundred bags of
rice (twenty five Kilograms)
to be distributed among Ebola
affected families and quarantined
households in Bong County.
Taylor-Ta in Yellequlleh District
and Barleketela in Salala District
were last month blockaded by
the leadership of Bong County
almost two weeks ago to control
the spread of the deadly virus in
the county, received the bulk of
the donation with one hundred

bags of rice going to each of the

affected districts.
Due to the blockade, the head
of the Friends of Sulunteh
(FOT) in Bong County, John
O. Flomo, could not travel to
Barleketela. The closest he went
was Taylor-Ta, where he made a
very emotional statement while
presenting rice chits to chiefs of
the area.
In his remarks, the FOT head
asked representatives of the
town to convey the Ambassador
Suluntehs heartfelt condolences
to families of those who have lost
their loved ones to the menace.
He said, although he was far
away and could not meet with

FOR SQUASHING WRIT OF PROHIBITION

the people on the ground, he

however could hear their loud
cry for support during this very
difficult time. Ambassador
Jeremiah Sulunteh would have
loved to go in Taylor-Ta and
speak directly to his people, but
it is not possible now, Flomo
said.
Flomo explained that since the
outbreak of the virus in Liberia
in March, Amb. Sulunteh has
been looking critically at areas he
would intervene; adding that the
plight of Ebola affected families
is one of those cases which
almost moved him to tears.
He said recent media reports
which brought to light the

sufferings of Ebola suspects in

some parts of the country who
went without food supply for five
days and who are rationed fourcups of rice (when available), to
each household a day regardless
of their number, was key to his
decision.
Flomo expressed the hope that
the Ambassadors intervention
will draw the attention of the
international community to the
plight of those Ebola affected
families
and
quarantined
households in the county.
He noted that if people in
quarantined homes are left
to starve, it will have serious
implication for the Ebola fight.
Flomo called on the international
community, particularly WFP to
focus on the feeding of Ebola
affected persons and quarantined
households.
He pleaded with chiefs in the
district and the county task
force to urge the people of
Taylor-Ta and Barleketela to
not only take maximum care to
prevent themselves but to move
vigorously to eradicate the Ebola
virus entirely from their various
communities.
The disease, he lamented, has
disrupted normal economic
and social activities throughout
the country and called on all
Liberians to adhere to the Ebola
key prevention messages to save
lives and maintain the dignity of
our country.
Flomo, on behalf of the Liberian
Ambassador, expressed the

Page 7

hope that the remaining one

hundred bags of rice will go
to Ebola affected families and
quarantined households in other
affected districts like Jorquelleh,
Sanoyea, Salala and Fuamah
maintaining that Sulunteh was
also considering support to other
vulnerable groups in the near
future.
According to Flomo, Sulunteh
has thanked the leadership of the
county and the Task Force for
their emergency Ebola assistance
and called on the international
community to continue in
assisting the people of Liberia in
this difficult and trying time.
Responding, the Town Chief
of Taylor-Ta, Peter Flomo,
registered on behalf of the people
of the area his profound thanks
and appreciation for the timely
donation which he said would
go a long way in alleviating the
suffering of the people. He said
the people of the area are not
surprised at such intervention,
noting that Sulunteh has always
come to the rescue of the
suffering people not only in
Bong but Liberians generally.
He assured Sulunteh that the
people of Taylor-Ta will deeply
appreciate the gesture which he
said is coming at a time when it
is needed the most and assured
him that the donation will be
used for the intended purpose.
On her part, Yellequlleh District
Commissioner Annie Reeves
also expressed her thanks and
appreciation on behalf of the
people of Yellequlleh District.
She said the people of the
district consider Ambassador
Sulunteh as one of theirs. Similar
sentiments were expressed by
Salala District Commissioner
Karmon Kanneh.

SUPERSTITIOUS TEAHJAY
Lawmaker Zarzar responds to former Superintendent Primitive Accusation
Henry Karmo (0886522495) henrykarmo@frontpageafricaonline.com

Monrovian an attempt to respond

to the Liberia AntiCorruption Commission
(LACC)
indictment
against him, former Sinoe
County superintendent now
senatorial candidate in the
county senatorial election,
J. Milton Teahjay chose to
play the blame game by
accusing some members of the
county legislative caucus of
masterminding his indictment.
The LACC indicted former
Superintendent Teahjay of
misappropriating
several
thousand dollars intended for
the implementation of projects
in the county.
At a news conference in
early November, Teahjay
expressed that the allegation

against him by the LACC

are false, misleading and a
calculated attempt to destroy
his political career and accused
senator Mobutu Nyepan and
Representative Matthew Zarzar
of orchestrating the scheme,
describing the lawmaker as a
dull and primitive person.
But Representative Matthew
Zarzar at a press conference
Monday responded to his
county former superintendent
against the many allegations;
specifically reacting to the
allegations that he (Zarzar) is
primitive, dull and promoting
tribal politics in Sinoe County.
Teahjay superstitious belief
Lawmaker Zarzar described
Teahjay as a man with
superstitious beliefs.
Representative Zarzar accused

Teahjay of wearing two sizable

rings in his middle and index
fingers.
According to Rep. Zarzar,
Teahjay superstitiously brags
that the rings are charms
reportedly containing some
sorts of parts that would protect
him against prosecution for
any crimes he commits.
Representative Zarzar said: He
waives his hands containing
these rings as he greets
people believing that these
rings contain magic power to
convince the public including
leaders as he performs these
wicked acts. He thinks these
rings would make his words
final in every discussion- is
this not primitive? This is also
Wicca and he is a Wiccan.

House

The lawmaker also claimed
that Mr. Teahjay is hosting
some Malian juju men (Witch
Doctors), who have being
living, in his house since he
became superintendent. He
said the headman for the juju
men was expelled when the
supreme court of Liberia ruled
that his action was unlawful
when he forcibly took away
a parcel of land belonging to
citizens.
Like other counties, Sinoe
County is made up of two
separate
dominant
tribal
groups which include the Sapo
and Kru ethnic groups.
Due to the existence of the two
groups, ethnicity has played
a key part into the county
politics and key decisions are

made by the locals based on

ethnic line.
At the level of the leadership
some politicians try to steal the
show to buy voters empathy by
preaching tribal politics.
According to his explanation
the County District #3
Representative also claimed
that the county Senator Joseph
Nagbe accused him of drawing
hatred line when he raised the
issue of mismanagement of the
county development fund by
Teahjay.
Public money has no tribe
and political party. Nagbe
and Teahjays deception must
be exposed, LACC and the
General Auditing Commission
(GAC) have said indeed that
Teahjay has stolen the Money
belonging to the county and
no lying and deception will
divide the Sapo and Kru people
again, Representative Zarzar
said.
He disclosed that he (Zarzar)
accepted to withdraw from
the senatorial race in 2011with
the intervention of President
Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and the
elders of the county who asked
him to do so for the sake of
reconciliation and unity in the
county.
As evidence of his desire to
unify the People of Sinoe,
Zarzar said he withdrew from
the process and disclosed that
the chief of staff in his office
is a kru man who is not from
his district and claimed that all
statutory districts in his district
are represented in his office
noting that the decision is not
political but his manifestation
of promoting peace and
reconciliation in the county.
Supporting
Nyepans
reelection
Representative Zarzar at a news
conference kept no feelings
about who he supports for the

senatorial seat in the county

during the pending December
16 election.
He publicly disclosed his
support to the re-election
of senator Mobutu Nyepan
and said, his his decision is
based on precedence because
according to him in 2011 he
waived his rights to senator
Nagbe to contest because
elders of the county requested
that two Sapo men could not
be senator and as precedence
of his withdrawal he cannot
support the decision of Teahjay
and Nyepan for two senators
from the Kru background to
represent the county.
Teahjay the man contesting
for the senatorial seat was
sometimes last year made to
appear before the plenary of
the House of Representatives
to answer why he should not be
held in contempt for allegedly
attacking
Representative
Zarzar in the studio of a local
community Radio station in
Greenville.
Representative Zarzar wrote
plenary of the House asking
them to invite the then
superintendent of Sinoe County
to face contempt charges for
allegedly attacking him during
one of his appearances on the
county local radio to react to
allegations made by Teahjay
against some members of the
county legislative Caucus.
Teahjay
apologized
for
his action and was sent to
prison after over 5 hours of
questioning by the lawmakers.
Prior to his appointment
as superintendent of Sinoe
County, he is famous for
threatening that hair should
grow in his hands if President
Ellen Johnson Sirleaf wins reelection in 2011.

Monroviahere are communities

and locations in
Monrovia
where
no
individual
dare to go due to the high
rate of criminality as these
communities are infested with
people who live solely on
drugs.
Even state security officers
do not really go in to these
communities unless through
an organized raid supported by
sufficient men power.
Some politicians also dare to
even campaign in these ghetto
locations but the opposition
Congress for Democratic
Change seems to be the link
between all classes of people
as on Sunday, an official of
the CDC, Youth league Chair
Jefferson Koijee embarked on
a journey on which reporters
who visited the ghetto
communities described as one
of the worst places to visit.
In the community known as
Zimbabwe, located around
the Borough of New Kru
Town where most inhabitants
are hardcore drugs users,
the dwellers sang pro CDC
slogans, threatening to die for
George Weah and CDC.
During the visit by the CDC
youth League Chair, members
of the association known as
Ghetto Dwellers Association
vowed that they will die for
George Weah if he is what they
described as cheated during the
pending senatorial election.
Speaking on behalf of the

association, the head of the

Association who wanted be
known as D. Flex said the
association is still grieving over
the inability of Weah and the
CDC to win the 2011 general
and presidential elections.
They cheated our papay the
other time and if they try that
again, blood still in our eyes,
we still crying for the way they
cheated our papay, we will die
for Georgee, said D. Flex.
Happy to be Ghetto people
D. Flex said amid cheers from
his colleagues that theyre
happy to be called ghetto
dwellers saying they are proud
of their life.
We like our life, let them
steal our money and send their
children to America but we
want our papay Georgee to
be president for this country,

anybody who cheat us, it will

not be easy in this town, he
threatened.
He vowed that the association
comprising membership from
all ghettos on the Bushrod
Island will mobilize on
Election Day and ensure that
all its membership are on the
alert for the election result.
On that day, we will vote
and just wait and hear what
they will say, any attempt fire
will blaze, we are not stupid
again, let them try us, they
will see what will happen, the
head of the Ghetto Dwellers
Association stated.

and is willing to die for the

CDC political leader.
We want tell your, Weah dont
have anything for us, he does
not owe us, we owe him, we
dont want his money, we just
want see him as our president,
said Big Mamie.
Big Mamie further said
Robertline can carry his wa
million, all we want is our man
Oppong, nobody must try us
again.
We..ready for them, they
will know who born dog when
they cheat our oldman, she
stated.
In loud chorus the association
membership threatened that on
Election Day they will remain
within the vicinity of polling
centers until ballots are counted
to prevent in their words what
they termed as cheating their

man Weah.
Koijee told the Ghetto Dwellers
Association
membership
that he was representing the
party political leader, Weah
who could not attend to the
invitation of the association
due to pressing engagements.
I am here to tell you that
Ambassador Weah really
wanted to come here because
he is part of you and can come
anywhere to talk to you but he
is busy with meeting regarding
the election, Koijee said.
Koijee said even though many
people refer to the ghetto
dwellers as criminals but the
CDC is a party for all and
is proud to identify with the
ghetto dwellers.
We are proud to be with you,
smoke your papie and feel free,
that is your life, we want better

living conditions for you and

that will only happen when
somebody who can come here
and see your living conditions
is heading this country, Koijee
noted. He continued that will
start of the senatorial election
before 2017, so you need to go
out and vote the ambassador.
He indicated that Weah
understands the plight of all
Liberians including people at
the bottom who are living in
bad conditions in the slums.
We heard people will be
giving you US$10 to attend
their political rallies, dont
go there, because when you
go there and their rally is
crowded, they will use that
to cheat your papay, sit here
and smoke your papie when
they call you, Koijee told the
Ghetto Dwellers Association.

LAW & ORDER

BROTHER SHOOTS KIN IN LAND DISPUTE

Monroviaand dispute in Liberia

has
become
an
unending crisis since
the end of a long civil
unrest in the country that took
away several lives as well as
the loss of thousands of dollars
worth of properties.
Some of the land disputes taking
place across the country in most
instances either end up with the
loss of lives or the destruction of
properties.
One of the worst land crises in
recent time took place in Kolleh
Town, Margibi County in late
2007 when over 10 youths hired
to brush a disputed farmland
were gunned down and bodies
dumped in the Farmington River.
Perpetrators of the act are
currently
serving
life-time
jail sentences at the famous
Monrovia Central Prison after
facing trial and been found guilty
of murder in a unanimous verdict
rendered by a panel of jurors.
Another instance of brutal land
dispute took place in Walki Town
along the Monrovia KakataHighway at the weekend just a
stone throw away from Mount
Barclay Check -Point when a
brother is reported to have shot
his brother on the arm.
Accordingly the victim was
trying to probe into compliant
filed by some land owners in the
area accusing his brother (the
alleged shooter) that he was in
the habit of selling their land.
Franklin Wright explaining
his ordeal to FrontPageAfrica

Kennedy L. Yangian kennedylyangian@frontpageafricaonline.com 0777296781

Victim Franklin Wright At The Liberia National Police Headquarters

Monday stated that a complaint

was filed to him by the
Commissioner of Louisiana,
Solomon Miller to probe into
complaint that his brother, Blama
Wright was in the habit of selling
their land.
The victim stated that he
informed the police to provide
him security to go out to the
disputed area to probe the
compliant but was advised by

some relatives not to go as his

brother had organized gang to
attack him and the others if they
dare to go on the disputed land
for fact-finding.
Despite hearing about the threat,
Franklin stated that he went
along with a security officer who
assured him of protection but
said when they got on the scene,
his brother pointed him out to the
gang armed with single barrel

guns and cutlasses to shoot and

kill him.
He told them to shoot and kill
me but none of the guys could
implement his order. Based upon
that he decided to move on me
and slapped me with the cutlass
and the rest of the gang decided
to beat on me until the security
moved in to rescue and take me
away, Franklin narrated.
He continued that after the

incident he left the area and

while he was in Monrovia he
received information that his
brother (Blama wright) had
issued threats to kill him.
Franklin said while he and two
other persons were driving home
over the weekend around 8:00
p.m he came to a ditch on the
road and while trying to find his
way out of the ditch he was shot
through the car window and he

later found out that the act was

carried out by his brother Blama
Wright.
When he shot me, he thought
that I was dead but when I lifted
my head I saw him clearly while
trying to load another round in
the gun this is how I speed out of
the area and reported the matter
to the community and the police
he further said.
According to Franklin the quarrel
between him and his brother over
the land issue started as far back
as October of this year when his
brother first inflicted wounds on
him and he took the matter up
with the police where his brother
was charged with simple assault
and sent to court with the case
still pending.
The victim is alleging that police
is doing nothing to prosecute
his brother indicating that the
lip-service by the police is due
to the fact that his brother had
allegedly bribed the police boss
Chris Massaquoi with an acre of
the disputed land but efforts to
contact the police boss proved
futile as his phone was switched
off.
However a source closed to the
police told FrontPageAfrica
late Monday evening that the
police had gone in search of
the reported shooter who some
report had it had gone into hiding
for fear of arrest.

the World Health

launched an ambitious
plan to stop the deadly Ebola
outbreak in West Africa, aiming
to isolate 70 percent of the sick
and safely bury 70 percent of the
victims in the three hardest-hit
countries Guinea, Liberia and
Sierra Leone by December 1.

Only Guinea is on track to

meet the December 1 goal,
according to an update from
WHO.
In Liberia, only 23 percent
of cases are isolated and 26
percent of the needed burial
teams are in place. In Sierra
Leone, about 40 percent of
cases are isolated while 27
percent of burial teams are
operational.
SYRIA CLAIMS TERROR GROUPS

that
his

Faysal Mekdad was speaking at
a meeting of the Organization
for the Prohibition of Chemical

close to fully eliminating
Damascus' deadly stockpile of
nerve agents and poison gas
helping international efforts
to prevent terrorists using such
weapons.
Mekdad said that terror groups
"have used chlorine gas in
several of the regions of Syria
and Iraq."
It's not the first time such
claims have been made. In
October, Iraqi officials said
militants from the Islamic State
group used chlorine gas during
fighting with security forces
and Shiite militiamen north
of Baghdad. The statements
in Iraq came two days after
Kurdish officials and doctors
said they believed IS militants
had released some kind of toxic
gas in an eastern district of
Kobani.

Yobe, Borno and Adamawa

have been the main targets of
Boko Haram militants fighting
for five years to carve a radical

Islamist state out of Africa's

top oil-producing and most
populous country.
The insurgents raided the Yobe
state capital Damaturu at dawn,
setting fire to a mobile police
station and shooting at an air
force jet that was circling their
forces and dropping bombs,
according to witnesses.
Yobe state police commissioner
Marcus Danladi said the
militants had caused "serious
damage to security formations

in the city, including the mobile

police base".
By late afternoon, Nigeria's
state governor said the military
had been able to repel the
militants from Damaturu using
ground and air forces.
Around noon in the Borno

blasts tore through a crowded
marketplace.
A

The issue is being discussed at a
meeting starting on Monday of
the agencys Pharmacovigilance

which brings together European
experts on the safety of
medicines.
Two batches of the flu vaccine
have now been suspended in
Italy as a result of the issue,
although it is not yet clear
whether there is a direct link
between the vaccine and the
fatalities.

A Yobe State University

student said that the main
administrative building of the
campus had been bombed by
militants riding on motorcyles
and a pick-up truck.
Residents of Damaturu fled or
hid as the attackers charged
into the city firing their guns
and shouting "Allahu Akbar"
(God is greatest), people at the
scene told Reuters.
"I saw a military jet circling
three times. People have

abandoned their vehicles on

the road and gone home,"
Damaturu resident Mustapha
Usman said during the
morning.
Another
resident,
hiding
behind a gate, said he saw
the insurgents driving down a
road in police vehicles and an
armored vehicle trying to shoot
down the plane.
"They mounted anti-aircraft
guns and they are trying to
shoot the aircraft that was
bombarding the town. They
were all turning their heads
shooting," he said.
The gunmen launched their
attack from the nearby town
of Buni Yadi, a Boko Haram
stronghold, residents said. No
one was available for comment
at military headquarters in
Abuja.
Boko Haram, which has killed
thousands and kidnapped
hundreds, was blamed for a
coordinated bomb and gun
attack on the central mosque in
Nigeria's second biggest city,
Kano, on Friday. Last week,
two female suicide bombers
hit Maiduguri's main market,
killing at least 44 people.
President Goodluck Jonathan

GENEVA (Reuters) ierra Leone does not yet have enough

beds in treatment centers to isolate Ebola
patients in the west of the country but
the opening of many new facilities in the
next few weeks makes its prognosis "very good",
the World Health Organization's assistant director
general said on Monday.
Unlike the other worst-hit countries, Guinea and
Liberia, Sierra Leone has failed to slow or stabilize
the spread of the epidemic, raising concern that it
may be a weak link in the defense against the virus.
But Bruce Aylward said Sierra Leone, too, was on
track to contain the outbreak.
"I would never have used the phrase 'Where
things went wrong', actually, with respect to Sierra
Leone," Aywlard said. "What I'm most impressed
about is how much is being done right ...
"Capacity at the district level is strong and getting
stronger in Sierra Leone, and that's why I think the
prognosis is actually very good'"
Two months ago, the United Nations set a target of

having 70 percent of Ebola victims buried safely

and 70 percent of Ebola patients treated in isolation
beds within 60 days. Those two goals are seen as
the key to halting the spread of the epidemic.
Guinea and Liberia have met both targets, but some
areas in the west of Sierra Leone have still not done
so, which Aylward said accounted for the continued
spread of the disease.
But he said new bed capacity in Sierra Leone meant
the target would be hit in the next few weeks, and
the geographic targeting of Ebola beds was "right
on the mark".
"The virus is telling you that. The problem is, you
would have wished it had come on line a month
earlier," he said.
"The virus got a leg-up and took advantage of it.
Ideally the build-out would have been faster, but
remember, they were planning this build-out and
working on it well before the cases caught up with
them."
(Reporting by Tom Miles; Editing by Kevin Liffey)

GENEVA (AP)
iberia and Guinea have met a Dec. 1 target for isolating 70
percent of people infected with Ebola and safely burying
70 percent of those who die, the World Health Organization
said Monday.
Only last week, the U.N. health agency had said only Guinea was on
track to meet the targets for getting the deadly Ebola outbreak under
control in the three hardest-hit West African countries.
But at a news conference in Geneva, WHO's Dr. Bruce Aylward said
the organization had revised its conclusion based on more analysis
of its data. Sierra Leone also probably met the targets in the west of
the country, he said, and likely will improve to the 70 percent target
nationwide "in the coming weeks."
Aylward also told reporters that WHO's ambitious plan to stop the
deadly Ebola outbreak in West Africa has shown it possible to quickly
reduce the "yawning gap" between disease levels and the capacity to
respond.
"You can catch up with Ebola even on this scale," he said.
However, he added that it "doesn't mean you're automatically going
to get to zero" cases and eliminate unsafe burials without more
cooperation among organizations, communities, citizens and country
leaders.
It is also important for people who have changed their behavior to
reduce the disease risks to avoid becoming complacent, he said.
WHO launched its Ebola plan two months ago to isolate 70 percent of
the sick and safely bury 70 percent of the victims in Guinea, Liberia
and Sierra Leone by December 1.
But the U.N. and others have predicted that Ebola will continue to
sicken people in West Africa and possibly elsewhere until sometime
next year.

VOL 8 NO.732

If Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are the world's top two - who is third?
Neuer shortlisted for prize with La Liga pair

soon belong in that category: His talent

allows him to think about going from a top
player to become one of the greats of his
generation, he said.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic
In the year that he released his
autobiography titled I am Zlatan, the
Swede wrote himself into the history
books by surpassing Carlos Bianchis
record of 39 goals in a season for Paris
Saint-Germain. The strikers 26 in Ligue
1 helped seal a second successive title
for the capital club and Ibrahimovics
second successive player-of-the-year
award in France.
A Cristiano Ronaldo-inspired Portugal
denied Ibrahimovic and Sweden a spot
at the World Cup but the 33-year-old has
bounced back from that disappointment
with 10 goals in 13 appearances for club
and country this season. The frontman has
never been slow to sing his own praises,
but even Zinedine Zidane says of him:
Its beautiful to watch him play.
Sergio Aguero

IFA have whittled down their Ballon d'Or list

from 23 to three, with Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel
Messi and Manuel Neuer set to find out in January
which one of them will win the coveted award.
However, with Ronaldo and Messi widely recognised as
the world's top two players, Neuer's place on the shortlist
suggests he's the third best player in the world right now.
Do you agree? We take a look at the players who could be
considered the best of the rest, behind the La Liga duo...
Manuel Neuer
In my time at United, its probably the finest display of
goalkeeping against us. That was Sir Alex Fergusons
assessment of Manuel Neuer after a 2-0 Champions League
win over Schalke in 2011. Since then the German has got
even better.
Now at Bayern Munich, Neuer is a key figure for the German
giants and starred as his country won the World Cup in
Brazil. Manuel Neuer is the best goalkeeper by a long way.
No one comes close to him, says Peter Schmeichel.
Gareth Bale
The most expensive player in world football has silenced
suggestions he may struggle to live up to his 100m euro
price tag at Real Madrid and has enjoyed a stellar 2014.

Bale became the first Welshman to score in a European Cup

or Champions League final with his extra-time, back-post
header, which put eventual-winners Real 2-1 up against
rivals Atletico Madrid and took his tally to 22 in his first
season in the Spanish capital.
Bale, who has played a key role in Wales positive start to
Euro 2016 qualifying, also scored a sensational, matchwinning goal in the Copa del Rey final, running from his
own half via the technical area before slotting home
in the 85th minute to defeat Barcelona 2-1 and lift his first
trophy for Los Blancos.
He was amazing, Cristiano Ronaldo said of Bale after
Reals 2-0 Super Cup win over Sevilla in August. Bale
looked strong and fast. He is very important for us. I
understand him, he understands me, I love playing with
him.
Eden Hazard
Eden Hazard was Chelseas star performer last season, with
17 goals in all competitions despite several run-ins with
boss Jose Mourinho and has proved equally vital to the
table-topping Blues this term.
The dynamic dribbler who has attempted 100 runs with
the ball and completed 62 in this campaign, both stats by
far the most by any player in the Premier League said
at the start of this season that he is not yet a "top-five
player". Mourinho, though, reckons the 23-year-old will

In terms of an out-and-out centre forward,

Aguero is probably the number one striker
in world football, Jamie Carragher wrote
in his skysports.com blog last week. With
17 goals in 19 games for a Man City side
yet to fully hit their stride this season, the
stats lend plenty of support to the Sky
Sports pundits verdict.
Its not just the volume of goals which
set Aguero apart, though, but also the
importance of many of his strikes. Forever
assured of his place in City history for his
title-winning goal against QPR in 2012,
Agueros hat-trick against Bayern Munich
to keep Citys Champions League hopes
alive this season was typical of the man
who delivers when his team-mates need
him most.
Luis Suarez
Luis Suarez was controversially omitted
from FIFAs Ballon dOr list this season,
after receiving a lengthy ban for biting
Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup,
however, his effectiveness for Liverpool,
Uruguay and now Barcelona cannot be
ignored.
Suarez shared the Golden Shoe with
Cristiano Ronaldo in 2014 after netting 31
times in the Premier League for Liverpool
last season, as the Reds narrowly missed

PRICE L$40
out on a first title since 1990, and struck
twice to end Englands World Cup hopes
in Brazil. Ahead of his 75m move to
Barcelona in the summer, Liverpool
boss Brendan Rodgers said of the PFA
Player of the Year: He is a winner, his
determination is unique, he is absolutely
relentless.
Neymar
The poster boy of the World Cup in Brazil
didnt disappoint on home turf although
the same could not be said of his teammates. Four goals in five games only
told half the story of Neymars impact
at the World Cup, as he shrugged off the
pressure on his young shoulders to drag
the below-par hosts to the semi-finals but
missed the 7-1 humiliation by Germany
after breaking a bone in his back against
Colombia.
The 22-year-old has since been named
Brazil captain but has shown no World
Cup hangover this season, scoring 13 in
16 for Barcelona, after only netting that
number in the entirety of 2013/14 for his
club.
Arjen Robben
It is hard for a player to improve on a 12
months which included a league, cup and
Champions League treble especially
when that player scored the winning goal
in the Champions League final. However,
Arjen Robben has recorded a superb 2014
on the back of his historic exploits last
year.
A league and cup double with Bayern
Munich was followed by a standout
display at the World Cup, where he netted
three times and helped Holland take third
place. He was the best player at the World
Cup, surmised Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz
Rummenigge, while team-mate Franck
Ribery has said Robben who started
2014/15 in fine style deserves the Ballon
dOr trophy along with Neuer.
Toni Kroos
Kroos is a wonderful player. Hes doing
everything right, the pace in his passes is
great and he sees everything. Its nearly
perfect. That was the assessment of
Johan Cruyff during the World Cup as
the midfield maestro pulled the strings for
eventual winners Germany. No wonder
Manchester United were so desperate to
land his signature.
