Almost years ago, Swamiji asked me to make available the text of the Trisati
in Romanized Sanskrit according to the convention adopted by scholars. is was to
ensure that Shiva Family members who were unacquainted with Indic languages or
scripts could still pronounce the mantras correctly.
I tried then to develop a special golf-ball with Olivei typewriter company
to render the diacritical marks for Romanized Sanskrit, but the eort seemed both
gargantuan and prohibitively expensive. e passage of time has now made it possible to full at last my commitment to Swamiji. e availability of laser printers,
the establishment of the Unicode standard to encompass all human languages and
scripts, and the development of compatible typeseing schemes, has now made the
task pleasurably feasible.
In the spirit of beer late than never and with the purpose of serving the
younger and yet-to-come generations of Shiva Family, the Trisati and other prayers
have been typeset in Romanized Sanskrit with proper diacritical marks, and made
available at the Dropbox website as a publicly viewable hyperlinked PDF document.

Kindly note that as with all orally transmied ancient texts, there are bound to
be accepted variations of the prayers given here. I have tried to adhere to the version
recited by Swamiji, while maintaining accuracy of meaning, etymology, and spelling.
It is now my blessed privilege to place this book mentally at Swamijis feet and
convey to him my deepest gratitude for suggesting it in the rst place.

. e English language uses the Latin script for its writing. With y-two
unique characters, the Latin script has nearly enough symbols to encode
all the sounds of Sanskrit. However, because half of those symbols are
uppercase leers and the remainder lowercaserepresenting the same
soundsthe Latin script by itself cannot be used uniquely or consistently
to represent Sanskrit.
. Accordingly, there are several schemes for rendering Sanskrit accurately
using an augmented Latin script. e result is called Romanized Sanskrit
and usually features diacritical marks, or signs placed above or below
leers to indicate dierences in pronunciation. Sometimes, two English
leers are necessary to denote a single Sanskrit character.
. e Romanized Sanskrit transliteration in this book follows the convention of the International Alphabet of Sanskrit Transliteration (IAST). is
scheme has enjoyed widespread adoption, both popular and scholarly. It
allows the Sanskrit sounds to be pronounced as perfectly as if the text
had been wrien in Devangar.
. It is worth pointing out that in Sanskrit, unlike English, each leer has
a denite pronunciation that may not be varied except to conform to
specic rules of conjunction, known as sandhi. ese are explained in
the book where relevant.
. Pronunciation tables for Sanskrit vowels and consonants follow, with examples for each sound from both English and Sanskrit. e columns in
these tables are explained below:
Column : shows the Devangar character;
Column : shows the IAST representation;
Column : gives an example of an English word where the approximate
sound occurs;
Column : gives and example of a Sanskrit word embodying the same
sound; and
Column : shows the symbol for the sound from the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). Please ignore this last column if it does
not make sense to you.

. e visarga character denoted by represents an abrupt voiceless expulsion of breath. Strictly speaking, it is dierent from the voiced consonant
h or the ha sound. If you place your hands on your throat, you will feel a
vibration when pronouncing a voiced sound; this is absent in a voiceless
sound. Despite this phonetic nuance, most priests pronounce nama as
if it were namaha which it most certainly is not. In ancient times, mantra
recitation incorporated a form of regulated breathing in which the visarga
played an important role, along with conjunction or sandhi and metre or
chandas. With the mispronunciation of the visarga some of these benets
of regulated breathing do not now accrue.
. When a visarga is followed by a voiced consonant or vowel, it changes
form according to sandhi rules, into an r, o, or other sound. Swamiji
sometimes used the component form with the original instead of the
modied sound. I have followed him as best I could.
. e anusvra, denoted as , is a nasal aer-sound, belonging to the preceding vowel, whose value depends on the succeeding consonant. It usually takes on the sounds of m, , , n.
. All vowels with a macron or bar on top are lengthened. us a is a short
sound pronounced with the mouth half-open whereas is a long sound
pronounced with the mouth fully open. Not knowing this fundamental
dierence contributes to most problems of Sanskrit pronunciation.
. e short i and u sounds both have lengthened forms, namely and
respectively.
. e e and o sounds are both long; there is no short version for these
vowels in Sanskrit.
. e vowel is pronounced somewhere between the sounds ri and ru.
. e consonant is a lile dicult for those who do not speak any Indian
language. Listen to Peter Sellers as he parodies Indian English in the lm
e Party to get an idea. is consonant is described as being retroex
meaning that the tongue is curled back to touch the roof of the mouth when
pronouncing it. If you start with the tongue in that position and try to
pronounce n you will get the rough sound of .
You may skip this section if you wish.
. Whenever a consonant has a terminal h as, for example, in bh, the sound
is an aspirated b sound; not two individual sounds, one a b and another an
h. us, bhagavan is pronounced as bha-ga-vn and not as b-ha-ga-vn.

. e word triat three hundred and, in this prayer, we have the three
hundred names by which the Divine Mother is described, adored, and
worshipped. e numbering used is by name rather than verse.
. Swamiji explained that this is a unique prayer in which the een-leered
pacadakar mantra is hidden like an acrostic. Every twenty names of
Dev start with one leer of the pacadakar. e een groups of
twenty names give rise to the three hundred names.
. Swamiji also explained that this mantra was revealed by God, in the form
of Hayagrva, to the Mahari Agastya at the laers request. It has the
power to full all desires and is hence called sarva-prti-kara-stavam.
. e words have been hyphenated to make reading easier, but on occasion, the hyphenation may be construed to be either grammatically or
semantically incorrect. Please excuse this.
. At some centres, Swamiji taught the prayer without the leer ca especially in the second set of twenty names. In other centres ca was included,
but with a subtle dierence. e algebra of Sanskrit sandhi means, for
example, that ca + ekaras = caikaras. Swamiji always recited it according to the le hand side rather than the right, as is customarily done.
I have adopted Swamijis component-wise recitation for transliterating
the mantras here. For the curious, the word ca is the conjunction and in
Sanskrit and appears mainly for metrical reasons.

or the long sounds as in the Triat, but rather end with e or i respectively instead. is seemed curious to me and the reason, as far as I could
divine it, was that in this prayer, the Divine Mother is being addressed directly as in a conversation in which She is right in front of the devotee.
e Sanskrit mode of direct address has a dierent case ending from the
nominative case, accounting for the noted variation. Perhaps it is worth
cultivating this bhvana of closeness to e Divine when reciting this
prayer.
. In between the names lop-mudra-mayi and agastya-mayi Swamiji inserted the names nanda-mayi ivnanda-mayi. is is accepted practice
as the followers of this mantra sdhana usually insert the names of the
gurus of their respective lineages. Follow whatever Swamiji instructed
at your centre.
. sahasra means one thousand and akara means immutable or imperishable
or vibration or syllable. e word vidy is the feminine form of mantra
and can also mean knowledge. So, this prayer is the knowledge or mantra
of one thousand syllables.

Notes
. is is a famous nti mantra or peace chant from the Upanishads usually
recited at the beginning and end of periods of Vedic study.
. e word pralled, and is here translated as full. e sense is one of
completeness, with nothing missing. us it is sometimes also translated
as perfection.
. Swamiji recited this mantra at the end of prayers and also during the
prhutifull oblation at the end of re sacrices.
. e mathematically-minded might like to set up a simple linear equation
for what this chant describes and nd out the value of the unknown.

Meaning
You alone are my mother and my father, my relatives and friends. You alone are
my knowledge and wealth. You verily are my everything, my god of gods.
Notes
. Here God is being addressed directly and intimately as You, as bets a
prayer of surrender at the end of worship when we have temporarily
reduced the distance between ourselves and God.

Meaning
Whatever is done by the body, speech, mind, senses, or intellect, or by virtue of
its own nature, whatsoever I do, all that I transfer and oer to Nryaa.

. e prayer above is the traditional version.
. Swamiji sometimes modied this prayer to add the names of various
deities and of his Guru, in addition to Nryaa. Devotees have since
added Swamijis name to the list, and sometimes the term sadguru as well.
Devotees at each centre should follow their respective conventions.
