ST STEPHEN
THE
ARCHDEACON & PROTOMARTYR
St Stephen the Archdeacon & Protomartyr was an early Christian

convert from among the Hellenistic Jews - one of the original
seven Deacons who were ordained by the Holy Apostles of Christ
and the first Holy Martyr of the Orthodox Christian Church.
St Stephen is commemorated on 27 December the day on which
he was martyred and on 2 August, which Commemorates the
Translation of his Holy Relics. On 15 June, St Stephen is
Commemorated together with St Fortunatos and St Achaikos.
St Stephen had been a Hebrew who lived in the Hellenic Provinces
and was related to St Paul, the Great Holy Apostle to the Gentiles.
After his conversion to Christianity, St Stephen was chosen to
serve the Holy Church and the Apostles in Jerusalem.
St Stephen was ... the starting point of the Martyrs the Instructor of
Suffering for Christ the Foundation of Righteous Confession
since he was the first to shed his blood for the Holy Gospel... of
Christ Whom he served so faithfully and devoutly.
The Holy Spirit worked powerfully through his Faith in Christ, which
enabled him to perform many Miracles in the Name of our Lord
and Saviour, and to defeat the arguments of those who disputed
or debated with him.
Consequently, the Hebrews grew to hate St Stephen and
continuously tried to falsely accuse him of all manner of sins.
However, St Stephen reminded them all of the Divine Miracles that
God had worked through him and he even dared to rebuke
them for killing our Most Innocent, Sinless Christ the longawaited Messiah Who is the Eternal, Only Begotten Son of God
the Father.
The enemies of the Holy Church were enraged by what they
thought was blasphemy and while they ranted and raged, St
Stephen beheld our Lord Jesus Christ in Heaven - Enthroned at
the Right Hand of God the Father, which he most joyfully
proclaimed to the people.
Hearing his words, the self-justified but spiritually blind Hebrews
seized St Stephen and dragged him out of the city and stoned
him to death, while his kinsman, Saul, [who later became the
Great Holy Apostle of Christ, St Paul] stood to one side, holding
the coats of the executioners.
Our Ever Blessed Lady Theotokos and St John the Beloved Apostle
witnessed that first Martyrdom for the sake of our Lord Jesus
Christ, and they prayed for his immortal soul while he was being
so cruelly stoned to death, which occurred about a year after
that first Glorious Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descended on
the Faithful Disciples of Christ.
The bloody, broken body of St Stephen the Protomartyr was left at
the foothill of Jerusalem for two days ... to be eaten by dogs...
but on the second night, Gamaliel, (who was the great erudite
teacher of St Paul and St Barnabas), accompanied by his son,
secretly took the Holy Relics to his own estate in Capharganda

and buried them. St Nicodemos, who had Reposed while

weeping and praying at his grave, was also buried there along
with Gamaliels Godson, Abibos, and Gamaliel himself, after
they had Reposed in the ensuing years.
After many years, the memory of St Stephens burial site was
forgotten, until 415 when Gamaliel appeared three time to a
Priest Father Lucian at Capharganda, revealing to him the
place of their burial and everything concerning it.
Having received the Blessings of the Patriarch, Father Lucian
exhumed the Holy Relics from their resting places, and an
unmistakable sweet fragrance of Sanctity filled the area.
St Stephens Holy Relics were Translated to Zion, where they were
honourably re-buried.
Many Pilgrims who suffered physical and spiritual ailments and
diseases were Miraculously Healed, while the other Holy Relcs
were laid to rest in a church built above the original site, on a
hill.
St Stephens Relics were later carried to Constantinople and his
whole right arm is kept at the Holy Trinity of St Sergios Lavra, in
1345, at Sergiyev Posad, Russia.
May his memory be Eternal and may he ceaselessly Intercede with
Christ our Lord and Saviour for the sake of our immortal soul.

shone forth like a bright shining
Star, flashing and Illuminating all the
ends of the earth, except that he cast
a shadow on the impiety of the
Hebrews, when he reproved them
with his Words of Wisdom. For he
debated with them using the
Scriptures, and tried to persuade
them that Jesus Who was Born of the
Virgin was indeed the Son of God.
He exposed their impious crime.
And we know him as THE HOLY
PROTOMARTYR STEPHEN.
