Faculty of Engineering Facilitator Interviews

You have been invited for interview for the post of Facilitator for one or both of the Faculty of
Engineering Project Weeks: the Global Engineering Challenge (GEC) or Engineering Youre Hired
(EYH). The interviews will be in small groups and we will ask you to undertake tasks which showcase
your abilities as a facilitator. The role of a Facilitator can be found, for example, at the following
website:
http://ctb.ku.edu/en/table-of-contents/leadership/group-facilitation/facilitation-skills/main
The interviews will commence with us introducing ourselves and giving you some more information
about the project weeks. We will then ask each candidate to do a number of tasks. Please look in the
attached document, named InterviewSchedule_Day (note Day is the day of your interview), look
for your name and look under the two columns labelled Task 1 and Task 2.
All the materials you will need are in the following Google shared folder.
https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B-S4Wu7j892eWXplNE9YU3dDT28&usp=sharing
There will be fours elements to the interview:
1. Task 1 is an opportunity to show your understanding of a project brief and how you might
help a student understand that brief.
In the document InterviewSchedule_Day and against your name, find under Task 1 the
name of a project title. Go to the shared Google folder and find a sub folder with the same
name as your project title. In that sub folder you will see two documents focussed on the
project. One is the project brief (which the students see) and the other is the facilitator
notes (which the students dont see).
On the basis of this information, we would like you to spend 3 minutes talking about the
topic and explaining to a 2nd year student from a department of your choosing (you can tell
us which department), how they might contribute to their group coming up with a solution.
2. Task 2 is an opportunity to demonstrate your facilitation skills.
In the document InterviewSchedule_Day and against your name, find under Task 2 your
interview name, e.g. Person A and also the name of a ppt presentation. This document is in
the shared Google folder. In the ppt, you will see that several slides will have your allotted
name in red text in the top right hand corner e.g. Person A.
We would like you to facilitate for 5 mins the discussion around your allotted slides. Please
note that there are notes within the PPT to help guide the discussion (although you may
need to adapt for the allotted time) and that each person has only one slide for which
significant discussion is expected. You should only facilitate the slides that have the label
associated with you, while other interviewees will facilitate other slides.
[Background Information: The materials have all been written for the Project Weeks. In
most cases, the sessions revolve around a PPT presentation and there are facilitator notes in
order to help you guide the discussion with the students. The facilitator notes are the notes
within the PPT presentation. The idea is that you are expected to have some background

knowledge of the topics from your experience as a student and through general knowledge.
However, we do not expect you to have specific knowledge in any of the topics. This is
where the facilitator notes come in. What we expect from you is to be able to work with
the provided materials to successfully facilitate sessions with the students. ]
3. Respond to questions concerning facilitation
4. When you are not acting as a facilitator, please be an active participant.
