Fat Determination in Biscuit by using soxlet method

Preparation :
Sample were dried in an oven. after that, sample weight about 5 gram with paper oil. Make a
hulls as sample vessel. Put a cotton in the bottom of hulls, and then put the sample to the hulls. Cover it
again with cotton, and bunch the hulls with rope.
Fat flask with boiling rock were dried in an oven. And then, put the fat flask into desiccator.
After the flask was cooled, then weight the fat flask in balance.
Analysis:
Connected the soxlet with fat flask. Put the hulls into the soxlet, added hexane until a half
volume of fat flash and the hulls submerged with hexane. Wait until all of the fat was extracted in
hexane. After the fat have extracted, take hulls from soxlet and distillated the hexane until hexane and
fat were separated. Put fat flask into oven until hexane odor disappear. After that put fat flask into
desiccator, and weight fat flask until the weight was constant.
Report
When preparation the sample, sample must be really dry. Because if in the sample still have
water, the water will difficult to separate from hexane because boiling point is higher better than
hexane. So, the water will constant in the fat flask and will increase weight of fat flask so the fat are very
much and the result is positive error. Extraction process was finished, when the color of hexane in soxlet
tube was colorless and in fat flask become yellowish. Extraction process usually work during 3-4 hours.
