LOCALS PICKED FOR AFL
THE names of two former Bacchus

Marsh Junior Football Club
premiership players shone brightly
in last Thursdays AFL draft.
Liam Duggan was picked at
number 11 by the West Coast Eagles
for the clubs first round draft pick.
Dillon Viojo-Rainbow was picked
at number 28 by Carlton in the

clubs second round draft pick.
Two other 2011 BMJFC premiership
players, Brenton Payne and Ryley
Stuhldreier, will also go into the
December rookie draft in the hopes
of joining their former teammates
and good friends Duggan and
Rainbow for a 2015 AFL debut.

BMJFC president Adrian Bettio
said club members watched the
draft live at Stoneys Pub with
friends and family and it was a
fantastic achievement for the
players and the club.
From the clubs perspective were
extremely proud of the efforts of

each of those boys and we would
particularly like to acknowledge
both Doug Hawkins and Chris
Stuhldreier for their coaching
contributions in enabling those
boys to develop as fine footballers,
Mr Bettio said.
Were also excited for Ryley

Stuhldreier and Brenton Payne
whose names will be in the rookie
draft. Theyre just as impressive as
Liam and Dillon on the football
field and off it.

Bookworm challenge

Moorabool Libraries will
be a popular destination
for children this summer,
as avid readers take part in
a nation-wide reading club
challenge.
From December 1 to January 16, the Summer Reading
Club challenge will encourage pre school, primary and
secondary aged children to
continue to read throughout
the summer holidays, and
win fantastic prizes.
In its fourth year as a national program, the theme
for the 2014 challenge is
adventure. Readers are encouraged to discover great
authors and illustrators of
picture books, junior and
young adult fiction and
non-fiction.
Lerderderg Library Programs Coordinator, Natalie
Grero said the reading challenge was a great way to
keep kids reading over the
summer break.
They are reading without
being asked to, she said.
I have had a number of
parents who are keen to
get their kids involved, and
when they sign up they receive a show bag with fun
things like tattoos and wrist
bands.
The program is divided into
three levels with age appropriate activities for each

the program, through Moorabools libraries, is free, and
the challenge created a fantastic opportunity for children to continue reading.

Nintendo 3DS XL, with a
maximum of 10 entries per
child. National prizes are
also available for those who
participate in the online

Geoff Howard (Labor) has

retained his seat in the Buninyong Electorate with a
+4.9 per cent swing after the
counting of preferences.
After the first preference
count Ben Taylor (Liberal)
had only 34.8 percent of
votes with Geoff Howard
cleaning up with 43.7 percent. The Greens candidate
Tony Goodfellow polled well
with 11 per cent (2599), well
in advance of the Nationals
candidate Sonia Smith, on
6.4 per cent (1509).
The Buninyong electorate
(formerly Ballarat East) is a
marginal Labor seat (1.6%)
and Mr Howard was first
elected at the 1999 election.
The Coalition struggled to
unite after the abortion debate blew up as an issue in
the campaign. This resulted
in Sonia Smith (Nationals)
declaring not to put Ben Taylor (Liberal) as the number
two preference, which was
against the National Partys
recommendation.

Pool would sink other projects

AN AQUATIC centre in Bacchus
Marsh would prevent other significant projects from being built
across Moorabool Shire according
to Woodland Ward councillor Pat
Toohey.
The Wagga Wagga Council indicated the aquatic centre cost $17
million to build and, with a population of 60,000 people, was running at an operational loss of $1.5
million each year, he said.
Cr Toohey said he was invited on

a tour of Wagga Wagga, including
the Wagga Wagga aquatic centre,
while attending a national local
roads conference in Tamworth in
November.
Its clear from that advice and

from information weve received
on the Melton aquatic centre that
those types of facilities have substantial ongoing funding costs and
they put in place barriers to build-
ing other projects in our shire.

He said Moorabool needed more
ovals and sporting facilities which
could be used by multiple user
groups, particularly in the growth
areas of Bacchus Marsh and Ballan.
Cr Toohey said the Bungaree
sporting facility cost $3 million to
build and if Moorabool Shire didnt
build an aquatic centre, and therefore didnt have the operational
losses that Wagga Wagga did, then
we could build a new sporting

facility like Bungaree every two
years.
Although communities like the
idea of an indoor aquatic centre it
would prohibit other projects from
being built, he said.
Wagga Wagga had 60,000 people
using their pool and still made a
loss. We would need a significant
volume of people and users of the
facility to make it viable.
This type of facility would financially hinder our ability to get

other projects.
On May 7 this year Moorabool
Shire councillors voted to discontinue plans for an indoor aquatic
centre in Bacchus Marsh until the
project could be properly funded,
however the indoor pool remains
listed as a top seven priority project
for the shire.
Milking it for
all its worth

A new and exciting historical display is on view at the
Lerderderg Library.
The Bacchus Marsh Historical Society had the display
on show in time to coincide
with last weekends Strawberries and Cherries festival.
The Dairy Industry That
Was showcases a history of
Bacchus Marsh dairy farms,
including the four main factories in the area.
Society
vice-president,
Chris Bronchinetti said the
factories used to produce a
number of different dairy
products including butter,
casein and condensed, processed, skim, and pasteurised milk.
For about 80 years dairying was the predominant
local industry, with 400 dairies supplying milk, so [the
display] will touch on some
of those farms and some of
the cattle, she said.

THE festive sounds of Christmas

carols will fill the halls at Bacchus
Marsh Grammar School on December
14.
Community Carols Choir musical
director, Barry Wilkins, said acts would
include the Bacchus Marsh Community
Choir, the 40-member Moorabool Light
Orchestra, Melbourne tenor Matthew
Thomson, childrens entertainer Squirt
the Clown, St Bernards Primary
School Choir, Bacchus Marsh Christian
Church Contemporary Worship Group
and a Vocal Youth Ensemble.
Mr Wilkins was director of the annual
Ballarat Christmas Eve Carols by
Candlelight for 25 years.
The main carols program will
commence at 6.30pm in the multipurpose complex of the Grammar
School and the event will be
promenade style where the public can
bring their own folding chairs, rugs,
cushions, blankets, pillows and sit on
the floor as a family. Seating will be
available for those not wishing to sit on
Squirt the Clown.

Moorabool News before he
flew over to Perth on Sunday
afternoon.
Duggan said it had been
a dream to play AFL footy
for so long and he was most
looking forward to having
the opportunity to play AFL
with the West Coast Eagles,
meeting the other players
and to prove my worth to
them.
They drafted four Victorians who are heading over
there together. Well be
staying with host families
to start with and obviously
they dont want us to feel
homesick so well get a lot of
support and guidance, he
said.
We heard some rumours I
was a chance to go interstate
so the family and I were
sort of prepared for that to
happen.
My family has been a
great support. At a community level Id like to thank
the Bacchus Marsh Junior
Football Club, people in the
Marsh and also the Western
Jets for all of their support.
One of the first people to
call Dillon Viojo-Rainbow

at his home after the draft
was Carlton coach Mick
Malthouse.
He said he was looking

forward to meeting me on
Monday,
Viojo-Rainbow
said.
I was sort of shocked to

get picked at 28. I was told I
was most likely to get picked
up between drafts 30 and
50. Id spoken with Carlton
a fair bit in the lead-up, so
when I heard my name I was
stoked.
The half-back and midfielder said he was most looking
forward to learning off the
older, experienced players,
including Chris Judd and
Marc Murphy.
Its going to be awesome
and Im going to learn a
hell of a lot. I want to make
my first impression count
and I want to work hard
in the pre-season so hopefully I can run out in the first
round, he said.
It will be funny to see what
Dennis (Cometti) and Bruce
(McAvaney) do with my
name.

been lucky enough to obtain a defibrillator thanks
to donations from generous
organisations and people in
Ballan.
Teacher Deb Goldie said
after completing her Level 2
First Aid Certificate she realised how important defibrillators were in saving lives.
Every minute lost trying
to locate one, is a minute lost
in someones life. They are
an essential part of the life
saving process, Mrs Goldie
said.

AVENUE OF HONOUR WORKS
Moorabool Shire Council will be undertaking aerial inspections and tree pruning works in
the Bacchus Marsh Avenue of Honour from Monday 1 December 2014 to Friday 12
December 2014.
These important tree works will be undertaken as part of the ongoing commitment to the
Bacchus Marsh Avenue of Honour Strategic Management Plan.
Council is periodically undertaking these works to limit the risk to public safety and extend the
life of the trees within the Avenue of Honour.
Works on the trees will be conducted Monday to Friday only during the hours of 8.00am and
5.00pm.
Trafc and other disruptions will be kept to a minimum. Efforts will be made to ensure trafc
disruptions and road closures are minimal, with the primary objective ensuring the safety of
workers, pedestrians, motorists and the general public.

FIRE PREVENTION UPDATE

Council ofcers have been inspecting properties throughout the Shire since late September
and its pleasing to see that there has been considerable effort made to prepare the Shire for
the coming Fire Season. Moorabool Shire has a high number of extreme and high risk areas
within its boundaries and residents need to be aware of the risk posed by wild re. Emergency
authorities have noted that there will be an above average risk of re in grasslands and forests
this season.
Council has issued over 200 Fire Prevention Notices to date to property owners to clear their
blocks for the coming Fire Season. Initial inspections are continuing. Property owners issued
with a Fire Prevention Notice must complete the work by the date specied on the notice and
ensure that their property is maintained for the Fire Season.
Council will commence re-inspections on 8 December 2014.
Property owners who have failed to carry out the work specied in a Fire Prevention Notice risk
heavy nes and will be required to repay the costs of any work carried out by council to comply
with the directions on the notice. The penalty for failing to comply with a Fire prevention Notice
has increased to $1476.00 this season. Additional slashing costs will also be charged.
NEW TOURISM EVENT GRANTS
DEADLINE EXTENDED FOR APPLICAITONS
The deadline for applications for Moorabool Shire Councils new tourism event grants has been
extended to Monday, 8 December, 2014.
The new tourism event grant program supports new tourism events in Moorabool shire with
high potential to attract signicant visitation from outside the shire.
If you are Moorabool based and have a new event concept to stimulate tourism and provide
economic and community benets for Moorabool Shire, download the program guidelines and
application forms from Councils website www.moorabool.vic.gov.au and apply.
The assessment process is competitive, criteria based and applications must satisfy the eligibility
criteria outlined in the program guidelines to be considered.

and Community Representatives (Volunteer Positions)
Council is seeking expressions of interest from community members to undertake the
independent chairperson role and the community representatives role for the Bacchus Marsh
Racecourse and Recreation Reserve Committee of Management.
The Chairperson is responsible for leading the Reserve Committee of Management including
the allocation and management of reserve usage, providing strategic direction for reserve
maintenance and development and is the key liaison with Council.The community representative
positions represent the community on the Committee of Management along with a delegate
from each of the reserve user groups.

A five-year strategy to tackle the spread

of blackberry across Victoria will see
better co-ordination of management

Minister for Agriculture and Food
Security, Peter Walsh, said: Blackberry
is a weed of national significance due
to its highly invasive nature, potential
to spread and the economic and
environmental damage it causes.
In Australia, it is estimated that
blackberry infests 8.8 million hectares
of land at an estimated cost of $95$103
million in annual control and production
losses.

approach

statewide strategic framework. This
strategy, led by the Victorian Blackberry
Taskforce, will help to better co-ordinate
management efforts and improve
opportunities for community blackberry
control.

Berry Symposium. This
symposium was held on
the 100th anniversary of his
birth. Thomas Berry died

Lets get Philosophical
to himself as; a Cultural

Historian, an Ecological
Visionary, a Geologian
and Cosmologist, an Ecotheologian: trying to establish a functional cosmology,
not a theology. As I said at
the beginning of this piece I
will lean towards the philosophical which might mean
that some of what Thomas
Berry says is not so easy to
understand. These words
cannot be easily explained
in a 2 second sound bite. Using my own words I would
describe Berry as someone
who attempts to redefine
what it means to be a human
in todays world in light of
the new science, the environmental crisis and the cultural histories that we each
inherit: quite a challenge.
The following quotations are
not in any particular order.
- The three basic laws of the

universe: differentiation, all
things in the universe are
different, subjectivity, the
universe is a community of
subjects not a collection of
objects, and communion, the
universe is bound together
in communion, gravitational, electro-magnetic and
genetic information.
- The earth exists and can
survive only in its integral
functioning. We cannot save
the earth in fragments The
human community cannot
survive unless everything
else survives. The earth is a
one-time endowment. We do
not get a second chance. If
we kill the earth it is all over.
The human is derivative, the
earth is primary.
- What happens to the outer
world happens to the inner
world. If the outer world is
diminished in its grandeur
then the emotional, imaginative intellectual and spiritual life of the human is
diminished or extinguished.
- The natural world is the
material source of our being (it) is the larger sacred
community to which we
belong. To be alienated from
this community is to become
destitute in all that makes us
human.
- We have moved from this
intimacy of earlier peoples
with the natural world to
the alienation of modern
civilization.
- With the scientific-technological period came a sort of
religious experience. It took
on a kind of religious dedication and a new sense of orthodoxy, a new dogmatic integrity not to be challenged
by reasonable persons.
- We could describe our
industrial society as counterproductive,

addictive,
paralyzing, manifestation of
a deep cultural pathology.
Mythic addictions function
something like alcohol and
drug addictions.
- The psychic energies sustaining the industrial illusion are now dissolving in
confrontation with the problems of water for drinking,
air for breathing, non-toxic
soil for food production. A
new energy is beginning to
appear.
- The Great Work before us,
the task of moving modern
industrial civilization from
its present devastating influence on the earth to a more
benign mode of presence, is
not a role we have chosen. It
is a role given to us, beyond
any consultation with ourselves. We did not choose.
We were chosen by some
power beyond ourselves for

this historical task.
- The supreme irony is that
just at this moment when
such expansive horizons
of past, present and future
have opened up, humankind
is suddenly precipitated into
an inner anxiety and even
into a foreboding about
themselves and the meaning
of it all. Unable to bear such
awesome meaning, men
reject themselves as part of
the world around them, the
past as well as the future ...
We are beset by a sense of
confusion and alienation ...
Contemporary men have
no spiritual vision adequate
for these new magnitudes of
existence ... To create such a
skill, to teach such a discipline, are the primary tasks
of contemporary spirituality.

Music to the ears

SINGER songwriter Demi
Louise is putting her home
town of Ballan on the world
map.
Last Monday the talented
musician won the Contemporary Pop Dance Song
of the Year award at the
Australian Songwriters Association (ASA) awards for
her unreleased demo Rivers Run Red. The song was
written and recorded in
under six hours as part of
the Australian Performing
Rights Association (APRA)
song hub workshop in London earlier this year.
Its a song about moving
forward in life. A real motivation and get-up-and-do-it
type song, the 21-year-old
said.
The workshop ended up
being a bigger deal than I
thought. Every day we were

put with two of the United
Kingdoms top writers and
producers and had to come
up with five songs in five
days.
Demi Louise performed
the song at the ASA awards
in front of 400 of Australias
music industry elite and
received high praise from
well-known artists including Kate Ceberano. She
came up and gave me a hug
and said my performance
was the highlight of her
night, Demi said.
The young performer only
realised she could sing and
write her own songs four
years ago after her parents
encouraged her to play at an
open mic night at The Palais
in Hepburn Springs. She
was then approached to do
more gigs and self-released
songs on You Tube.

I developed a big fan base
in Nottingham, England.
Ive done quite well overseas, she said.
I love singing my songs
live to people and connecting with them.
It has been a big year for
the unsigned newcomer. She
performed at music industry
conferences and festivals in
the UK, Ireland, Korea and
New York, and also opened
for No. 1 chart topper Gabrielle Aplin in the UK and Kodaline in Ireland after winning an online competition.
Her debut single Ruins
reached No. 7 in the iTunes
singer songwriter chart and
she will play her first headline Australian show at The
Espy in Melbourne on December 18.
This last year things have

really taken off. I signed
with a manager and agent
and Ive gotten quite a bit
of attention from other performers, she said.
Next year promises to be
even busier. The Ballan
woman will play her folk
pop original music at the
Tamworth Country Music
Festival on January 16, 17 &
18, will perform alongside
acts including Ash Grunwald and Dan Sultan at the
Ballarat Beer Festival at the
City Oval on January 24,
and then shell fly to Texas
to perform in the prestigious
South by South West line-up
in March with acts including
The Church, Angus & Julia
Stone and Courtney Barnett.

Real estate agents are reporting greater interest by

investors, including selfmanaged superannuation
funds, in homes in regional
Victoria. So new data showing that rental vacancy rates
across the state are stable
or falling, and that regional
markets are offering healthy
yields of up to 5.4 per cent,
will be welcome news.
The vacancy rate data
showed that in Geelong,
the regional centre with the
highest rate, there was a 0.1
per cent fall to 4.4 per cent
in October, based on the sixmonth average trend to October 31. In East Gippsland
and Wellington Shire, there
was a fall from 3.4 to 3.1 per
cent.
In many regional centres
such as Ballarat, the vacancy rate was already low
with housing agencies often
struggling to find sufficient
accommodation for tenants.
So while a further fall in the
vacancy rate is unwelcome
news for those looking for a
place to live, for investors it
means continuity of tenancy
and the likelihood of a pool
of would-be tenants from
which to choose.
In Ballarat and the Central
Highlands the vacancy rate
fell from 2.8 to 2.7 per cent,
while in Shepparton and
Goulburn,
Warrnambool
and the Western District,
it was down to 2.7 per cent

from 2.9 per cent. In the
Wimmera it was stable at 2.2
per cent.
Median house rents were
up in Geelong, Ballarat and
Bendigo in October, while
across the state the median
rent for a house remained
stable at $300 a week. The
median apartment rental
was also stable at $250 a
week but in Ballarat, where
the housing market is tight,
it rose from $240 to $255 a
week.
Although property investment in regional Victoria
can offer healthy returns,
local factors such as employment opportunities play a
role and this varies across
the state.
When looking at rental
yields that is, the proportion of rental income derived
from the asset those with
the highest grossing returns
in the 12 months ending
September 30 were recorded
by three-bedroom houses
in Sale and Ballarat East at
5.4 per cent. The yield for
a three-bedroom house in
Echuca was 5.3 percent, and
three-bedroom homes in
Drouin and Alfredton returned gross rental yields of
5 per cent.
The top areas for rental
growth for the 12 months
ending September 30 were
Wendouree,
Mildura,
Echuca, Alfredton, Corio
and Kyneton all for threebedroom homes. Across the
state, one-bedroom units
returned the highest gross
rental yield with 5.5 per
cent, while the return for
two-bedroom units was 5.3
per cent and three-bedroom
units returned 5.2 per cent.
This compared with 5.1 per
cent for two-bedroom houses and 5 per cent for threebedroom houses.

After a number of forced changes (again) to the side this
week, Avenue were able to overcome a determined BMS side
to win by 13 shots. Led by Ron Millingtons rink (11 shots up),
Cherald Sinclairs rink (9 shots up) and Peter Kays rink (8
shots up), Avenue were able to cover the remaining rinks 15
shot deficit to run out comfortable winners, and hence retain
top spot on the ladder.

Prior to the commencement of last

weeks program, the Bacchus Marsh Little
Athletics Centre Multi Event presentations
were held.
Age group winners were
presented with trophies from the
Centre Captains, while second and
third placegetters received medallions.
(Performance certificates were distributed by team managers
to all Multi Event competitors.)
Ideal conditions greeted the athletes and personal best
results were gained by a large number of members. Hayden
Thompson (Eagles) set a new record in the Under 16 Javelin
bettering his own previous record with a new distance of
36.50 metres.
Congratulations to the Girls Under 12s, who this week
approached the committee requesting permission to guide
one of their fellow athletes, Hayley Spargo, around for the
800m event and lead her to her very first victory at Little
Athletics. This was a remarkable display of sportsmanship
by these girls and the acknowledgment from the spectators
was an extraordinary moment.
State Relay Progressions were announced by Special
Competition Manager, Mark Byrnes. BMLAC will now
have 17 teams represented at the State Championships on
December 13 at Lakeside Stadium.
