HEALTH AND HYGIENE FACTOR - GRAMEENPHONE

1. Introduction:
In the simple sense, human resource management means employing people, developing their
resources, utilizing, maintaining and compensating their services in tune with the job and
organization, individual and the society. Human resources management (HRM) can be defined as
managing (planning, organizing, directing and controlling) the functions of employing, developing
and compensating human resources resulting in the creation and development of human
relations with a view to contribute proportionately (due to them) to the organizational individual
and social goals. Psychologists are concerned with the theoretical considerations of accident
causation and the research into the accident control, through proper selection, training and
education of the employee, and the social and psychological factors that influence the individuals
behavior in general. Engineers and safety officers usually render necessary practical advice on
certain aspects in the industry. They look upon prevention of accidents basically as an
engineering problem to be tackled through proper designing of mechanical safety devices. In fact,
health and safety are interrelated and, therefore, require a multi-dimensional approach. Its
importance has increased because of large-scale industrialization in which human beings are
subject to mechanical, chemical, electrical and radiation hazards.
According to the data of the Council of Labor Affairs, the disabling injury frequency and severity of
domestic transport, storage and the communication industry in 2006 to 2008 was higher than
the manufacturing industry and all industries. As the telecommunications industry is part of the
transport, storage and communication industry, the potentially hazardous factors in the workplace
of the telecommunications industry may not be lower than the workplace of the general industry, it
is worthy for safety managers to attach great importance to.

1.1Background of the company:

Grameenphone is a Bangladeshi telecommunication provider. It was founded in 1997and is
partly owned by the Norwegian telecom provider Telenor (62%) and Grameen Telecom
Corporation (38%) (Wekipidea, 1995), which is a non-profit organization that was founded by the
Nobel Prize winner Professor Muhammad Yunus. The company was the first operator to
introduce GSM mobile services in the Bangladeshi market and the first to introduce prepaid plans
in 1999. As of today, Grameenphone has a market share of 47.7% and approximately 15 million
subscribers, making it the largest operator in Bangladesh. In2007 the company had an operating
profit of NOK 1.24 billion which is a one-third fall in operating profit from the 2006. In the fourth
quarter of 2007 operating profits fell to NOK292 million, which is a decrease of 43% from the
same period the previous year. Despite this, the company managed to yield revenue of NOK 4.62
billion in 2007 compared to NOK 4.31 billion in 2006.Grameenphone has invested heavily in
network infrastructure. Their network coverage now reaches 98% of the countrys population with
its cellular network which is EDGE /GPRS enabled. This is a technology that makes it possible to

make use of high speed internet and data services throughout the cellular network. The company
also emphasizes good customer service and is well represented in the market through service
desks and Grameenphone Centers. The company currently employs around 5000 people in
different parts of Bangladesh. In 2008 Cell Bazaar, an innovative new service from
Grameenphone which let users trade basic goods from their cellular phones was voted Asian
Telecom Innovation of the Year in the Telecom Asia Awards 2008. (Facebook, 2010)

1.2. OBJECTIVE:
Like every project and report this report too has its objectives. Our first and one of the most
important objectives is to find the positive and negative issue about health and hygiene factors in
Grameen phone. This is a new topic which many of us are not quite familiar with, and is getting a
lot of recognition importance these days especially considering the intense competitiveness and
uncertainty of the work environment. It is very imperative of us to know as to what is the condition
of workplace is and is the workplace is good for health or not. Employees mind and health is very
important for the company because the total productivity of any company depend on the
employees. So todays most of the companies are very aware about their employees health as
well as mind. Even the companies also take care about the family and all about the employees as
employee can give proper concentration towards the company. So our main objective it to
analyses the Grameen phone and find how much this company care about their employees.

1.3. Scope:
Our main scope of the project is to find out the student of North South University viewpoints and
attitude over Health and hygiene factors in workplace and its implication.

1.4. Methodology:
For the methodology for our project we have interviewed Musfiqul Salekin the HR manager of
Grameen phone call center department. His interview is our primary source and our project highly
depends on this source. It was through his insights and HR expertise we were better able to
understand the situation of health and hygiene factors in the organization. During the interview we
were also introduced to three officials/staff whose viewpoints too were of great help to the project.
For a better understanding and to locate common grounds we had an informal chat through the
phone with a reporter who is a cousin of a friend of ours from a competitor of Grameen phone
(Bangla link). We are not only depend on this manager but also get a lots of information from one
of our group mate Maruf Ahmed Rafi who is the current employee of Grameen phone as we can
get the proper condition of Grameen Phone. Beside this we get information from my other friend
and senior brothers who are currently involve with Grameen phone. Beside this we get

HEALTH AND HYGIENE FACTOR - GRAMEENPHONE

Page 4

information from different websites specially the website of Grameen phone and different
websites of social media and from different blogs also from other sites. To give our work more
credibility we developed a questionnaire for the university students of a sample size of 50. The
sample sizes were mostly students who were in their final year before graduation. We made
questionnaire for the university students because after all it is these students who are going to
enter the job the market soon, and as mentioned earlier that it is the youths that are entering the
job market these days and so it would be very helpful to know about the importance of health
factors of any organization and how a sound health and mind helps at workplace. Another source
of work includes cases and researches on the given topic obtained through our faculty and also
through websites which have been which have been helpful to the working of our project.

2. Literature Review:

2.1. Definition:
Trying to gather some theoretical data on our research topics, we found the following definitions
online:
Employee health is the promotion and maintenance of the highest degree of physical, mental and
social well-being of workers in all occupations by preventing departures from health, controlling
risks and the adaptation of work to people, and people to their jobs. (ILO/WHO, 1950)
The factor that is considered as the extrinsic condition which motivates employees to perform
their best and feel committed towards their works is considered as employee hygiene.
(Management Study Guide, 1980)
Let us explore a broader definition. University of Virginia Health System writes:
Employee Health is the gatekeeper that ensures that all employees who work at the Health
System have completed the required health assessment prior to reporting to their units. This
important process helps ensure that employees are free of communicable disease and other
health issues. (University of Virginia, 2002)

2.2. Interpretation
It is clear from the above that health and hygiene are interlinked,
And consistent development in both areas for employees will enable an organization to make
greater strides in productivity and profitability.
Significant development is needed in the Health and Hygiene sector as we are dealing with a big
organization. The consideration of health and hygiene factors will help the organization improve
the efficiency of the employees and increase their productivity. Health and hygiene affect the
employee work output as their productivity depends on their health and physical ability.

3. History of health and hygiene:

Workplace Safety and Health in the Late 19th Century:
Occupational health and hygiene is the science of protecting mans health through the control of
the work environment. Man and his environment are indivisible. They react upon each other in the
form of a give and take relationship. Frequently it is assumed that man moves through his
environment and molds it to his desire; however, it may be more productive to think of the
environment and man as moving through and changing each other simultaneously.
Concern over workers' health and hygiene on the job arose in the late 1900s as the United States
became an industrial power. The increasing use of different machines, gadgets, working for
hours, stressing out for works in different organizations resulted in different health issues,
diseases and affected the productivity of the workers on different aspects. (ORS, 2002)
Historically, there was very little concern for protecting the health of the worker prior to 1990.
Mans life, at the dawn of civilization, was an occupational disease.
The research and regulation of occupational safety and health are a relatively recent
phenomenon. As labor movements arose in response to worker concerns in the wake of the
industrial revolution, worker's health entered consideration as a labor-related issue.
During the Progressive Era in U.S. history (roughly 1900-1920), a coalition of journalists,
businessmen, unions and politicians used the power of the government to mitigate the worst
effects of rapid industrialization. In 1911 New York's Triangle Shirtwaist Co. caught fire, and 146
of 300 employees died. Managers had locked the exit doors, claiming employees would steal
from the company and could be permitted to leave only under supervision. The tragedy became a
rallying point for reformers. (US Army, 1995)

4. Our Findings:

4.1. Health Factors:

4.1.1. Floor tiles:

In the GP House that floor tiles are not only

good but also they use carpeting. Even that
is very much good working environment for
ay types of employees. But that os not only
place for analyse the total grameen phone.
We went the Other brances like NNT and
find some negative things about this organization. In NNT place there are broken floor tiles every
were. Some tiles are fully broken and some are crack which will break very soon. In this situation
no one take necessary step to fix it up. Managers are also ignoring this problem. This is really
dangerous for any of us working in this work place. Anyone can injured and have a serious
damage in their body. This is not good for an employs and for the company. Because that injured
employee could not work for some days or week which is not good for any employer.

4.1.2. Working chair:

In telecom companies all most every work is on the computer. So this is very
necessary that the chair must be comfortable because employee have to work
whole day seating on that chair. In the GP house they maintain good chair, and
also relax chair for employees as they can relax at that free time. But in NNT
most of the chairs are broken. Some chairs do not have broken arms; some are band in one side
which is so uncomfortable for any employees to work. Some time employees get pain on their
body because of working whole days on those uncomfortable chairs. Also no one cleanse those
chairs on time which is not good for any employees health.

4.1.3. Washroom facility:

In the GP House they provide the best washroom facilities for their employees. Even that might
be the best wash room provide by any organization in Bangladesh. But the washroom facility of
NNT is not good enough. After using washroom it must wash timely. Sometime the washroom
looks so unhealthy and unhygienic. Thought there are cleaners to clean every time, but those
cleaners do not cleans those washroom in time and properly and Grameenphone do not concern
about this. So that those washroom getting to much unhealthy day by day. There are also water

HEALTH AND HYGIENE FACTOR - GRAMEENPHONE

Page 7

problem on those washroom. Some time there is no water at all. Sometime dirty
water comes from water line. Some water tapes never work properly. Some
Commode flash is not work properly and water come out by the water pipe
because of lick on the pipe line. Washroom mirrors are also broken which can
be fall from wall any time by which any one can injured very badly. There is no
hand wash soap to wash hand after using toilet, because of cleaners do not
clean those toilets in time bad small all ways come from the washroom. So this
is too much unhealthy and unhygienic for employee. From this unhealthy washroom employees
can gat dangerous diseases and get sick badly.

4.1.4. Gym facility:

There is gym facility for employees in Grameenphone.GP House maintain good types of Gym
with lots of instruments with good instructors. But in NNT, It is really poor that there is a small
room from gym, without trainer and broken machine in the gym. We cannot define it as a
minimum rang of gym because most of the machine are broken or not working. There are only
two treadmill but both are out of service. Other machine condition is same as this treadmill. Some
of them work but some part of that machine is missing. Some do not work at all but displaying in
the gym as a show pies. If employees try to work out in this gym them they will must hurt them
self very badly. If someone report for this bad condition of Grameenphone gym then no
necessary attempt are taken to change the condition of employees gym or buy new machine
which serve a good service and a trainer who will trainee employees how to work out in the gym
and regular maintenance so that machine can last long. Buy which organization can utilize its
money that they spend for those machines.

4.1.5. Recreation facility:

In Grameenphone employees have to work all day in office. Human cannot work continuously
without any break in between their work. They need recreation to work effectively.Although GP
House offer a lots of recreation facilities for their employees But NNT not offer any types of
recreation facility for employees. There are no balconies, open space or a big gym for employees.
They have a gym which is almost broken. These things dismotivate employees to do their work
properly. Grameenphone also do not have any lounge for employees so that they can come and
talk each other and refresh them for a while, so that they can concentrate on their work and work
more productive. Employees become monatomic if they work without any break or recreation.
Grameenphone also do not arrange any annual picnic for employees by which everyone can
know each other and can build a good relationship with other. This is really good for any
organization to have good relation among employees, Which make their work more productive.

HEALTH AND HYGIENE FACTOR - GRAMEENPHONE

Page 8

4.1.6. First aid:

First aid box is one of the essential things which can be needed any time.Every organization
should maintain it and it is a law by government. As a primary treatment we need a first aid box
for someone get injured or have headache, body pain etc. Every organization should have at list
one first aid box in every floor with essential medicine support. Though there are two first aid
boxes in every floor of NNT, But those first aid boxes do not serve their purpose every time.
Because maximum time there is no use full medicine on that first aid box and maximum time
employee find that there is no medicine at all or some other thing like scissor, bandages, etc
which is very much essential. No one take essential step to buy necessary medicine for the first
aid box. Some time there is some medicine which is never used because no one needs those as
a primary treatment.

4.1.7. Working desk:

Grameenphone is a desk base office where employees do their work on desk every hour by their
computer. But most of the time those desk are dirty. Dust is the common thing in those desks.
There are also one flower vase in every desk to motivate their employees but no one clean those
every time so in this case this thing do not motivate their employees at all. Employees who work
there also not conscious at all about their desk, they do not keep those desks clean. All time
employees keep their food, coffee mug for having those. After taking their food they do not clean
their desk at all and when the next employee comes for work he has a bad impression of his/her
previous co-worker. Which make an employee less productive. There are cleaners to clean office
space but they do not clean timely. So those desks get dirty after one employee use the desk.
Grameenphone should concern about this things.

4.1.8. Electrical wire system:

Grameenphone is a computer base work environment and electrical wire system are needed in
everywhere to work in computer, printer, fax, telephone etc. because electrical wire are needed
so those wire must be manage properly so that no one get hurt. But in Grameenphone electrical
wiring system is completely open and it found all around the floor and there is no precaution for it.
Some wires are open and some are rap buy scotch tape. For this condition any one can be
shocked and injured very badly, could die also or paralyzed for whole life. Although GP House
maintain it well but NNT cannot maintain it properly. So Grameenphone should manage those
wires before it gets too late and someone gets hurt so badly.

HEALTH AND HYGIENE FACTOR - GRAMEENPHONE

Page 9

4.1.9. Kitchen facility:

In Grameenphone kitchen facility also not up to the mark. Because
this is not well manage. Cleaners do not clean kitchen every time
when it needed to be clean. After having lunch, shacks, dinner or etc
employee just keep their used plats, glass, totally unclean on the
kitchen room. When the next employee comes to have his/her food found used plates and
glasses. This is really annoying. Those cleaners who use to clean those plates or glasses they
also do not clean properly in time. This is really unmotivated situation for the employees.GP
House not need this types of kitchen facilities as they have some large caf inside their
organization.

4.1.10. Air ventilation problem:

In Grameenphone house of Bashundhora is well build with the modern facilities. But from where
they operate there call center, HR planning and forecasting which is nitol niloy tower is completely
opposite from the Grameenphone house. Air condition can not satisfy the employee. Sometime
those are not works due to proper maintenance issues. Some time it is too much cooled and
some time it is too hot in this situation employee can no work properly and satisfactory level go
really low. There is no open space to enjoy the fresh air while working hours. In this building there
are no enough ventilation facilities.

4.1.11. Fire extinguisher:

Fire extinguisher is an essential thing that needed to avoid accident creates by fire. Every
organization need fire extinguisher enough to prevent accident in an organization and those
should be in an open space where everyone can see. Every employee should know how to
use fire extinguisher when they need. In GP house they maintain enough fire extinguisher
but In NNT there are only two extinguishers for each floor. If the the building affected by fire
then no one can save them because they do not know how to use it and how to survive in
those situation. There is a narrow emergency exit which is not enough for 3500-4500
employees of Grameenphone office at NNT. Grameenphone also do not arrange training for
employee what they will do in an emergency situation or in a fire accident and after training
employer must check that is the trending work or what employees do at that situation.

4.2. Hygiene Factors:

Find the Seven Standard practices of this organization to manage the employee Competitive
advantage:

4.2.1. Employment security:

In Grameenphone job security is offered by the employer to the employee and thats why its
production is increasing day by day. Salary will be increased when employee deserve it.
Grameenphone is a contract renewed basic company nowadays for their more productivity.
Basically, 6 months to 1 year is the maintaining ruler for the contract renewed.

4.2.2. High Wages:

Salary structure is adjusted according to the living cost, expenses. All the employees specially the
top management employees get huge salary which is more than enough.

4.2.3. Incentive Pay:

GP always works on incentives. They have a fixed salary but they give extra benefits, rewards
depending on the work performance, position, competitions etc.

4.2.4. Taking the long view:

They invest more on the employee grooming, training, better productivity and later the employees
become experts and their knowledge, experience increase and they start performing better. This
is good for the company and the good employees become the assets of the company.

4.2.5. Measurement of the practices:

The work activities, performance etc. is monitored and measured by different level employees.
They keep information about the work activities of the employees and measure their performance
and skills.

4.2.6. Overreaching and philosophy:

4.2.7. Participation and empowerment:
If they launch a new product or idea, they call their employees, let them know about the new
innovation, give them some surveys to solve them and ask for the employees opinion and new
ideas about that product and the employees can also come up with better options, ideas and
change any idea if they think that could be done in different ways and reach the customers.
(Grameenphone, 2002)

Page 11

5.0 Analysis:
After analyzing the survey we can understand that Grameenphone only take care about their
high level managers. They care a very little about their mid-level and low level employees. But
the total field works are normally done by mid and lower level employees. But grameenphone
are not aware about their these types of employees. When we ask about this to the HR manager
he appreciates us and shows us some reason. Grameenphone want to cut their cost. For that
reason they expense little about their mid and lower level employees. Said by the HR Manager
of GrameenPhone. Even they are not using paper at their office except electronic devices for
this reason. These types of lots of initiative they took to reduce their cost. But by using this
theory Grameenphone lose their active employees and made a bad feeling to their employees
mind. Employees are not feels like before. Top level managers are okay with this because they
get very good facilities with cut their costs. But different types of problems found in mid and
lower level employees. When we ask about one Grameenphone employees working in Team
leader in NNT , the told us Previous we all like to work with Grammenphone and this types of
job was golden egg to us, but now we all leave this job for their lower service to their
employees. From this statement it is clear that employees are very much dissatisfied to their
organization what really effect to the company.

6. Recommendation:
From our survey we can recommend some vital things to Grameenphone. First of all they are
very much care about their top level managers and that is very much necessary. So we
appreciate this service. But mid-level manager and the lower level employees are directly
involved with work. So it is very much necessary to take care about their physical and mental
condition. Because these employees mental and physical condition make the main efficiency of
this organization. If these employees are feeling bad and they feel sick and give the customers
bad service then the reputation of Grameenhone decrease. In this way Grameenphone may lose
their efficiency and good reputation as well as loyalty. So our recommendation is the top level
manager should cut their cost by using new technology and different way not giving bad service
to their employees.

7. FUTURE RESEARCH
Due to unexpected situation in our country, mostly HORTAL makes our ability to do more
research of health and hygiene factor in this multinational very limited. But if we could use our
maximum time, we could have brought some more output to make our research up to the mark.
But definitely, we can do much better in our research. We just surveyed only on GPHOUSE
Bashundhara and NNT (Nitol Niloy Tower) due to the strike. Otherwise, we can survey all of the
GP outlets and office. In future, we have a plan to do more research in all of GPs offices and
outlets, if we find such opportunity.

Page 12

8. LIMITATION
There are several limitations that we face in our survey due to strike. There are some lacking due
to unavailable data or resource from HR manager due to high confidential matter about
Grameenphone. And one of our group members who is currently working in GP tried his level
best find out the actual data analysis but he do not have every level of access to collect all the
actual data.

9. Conclusion:
After the whole study of the Effectiveness of Health, Safety towards the employees ,the
conclusion arrived at is that the avoidance of accidents together with ensuring the Health and
Safety of the employees is one of the integral and important element that ensures development in
the competence of the workforce, growth in the production and increase in Industrial production.
The benefits of prioritizing the Health and Safety measures in the company are immense and can
be used to reinforce the fundamental Industry values. Grameen phone should take dedication to
implement the labour laws and regulations regarding occupational health and safety in work place
to promote the employees welfare within the company to archive success, this will improved
satisfaction level of the employees regarding occupational health and safety on job and an
improved overall job satisfaction. Every organization should promote safety and health
management- formulation of safety and health policy, formulation of separate safety cell, safety
instruction and training, safety audit, regular testing and certification by chemical and
metallurgical testing centre, introduction of safety permit system in some areas specially in case
of contractual labors. To conclude the company should have given maximum effort and
dedication to implement the labour laws and implementing effective safety and health
management considering the type of safety and health problems, accidents, employees and
technology in its organizational settings and also good level of satisfaction among employees
regarding healthy and safety has been achieved.
