hatchbacks styling is a
lot less restrained than that
of recent concepts based on
Volkswagens perennial bestseller. Thats in line with plans
to create a car that could be
considered for low-volume
production. There is a deeper
front bumper, which sports
integral carbonfibre elements,
including a prominent splitter.
The cooling ducts have also
been heavily modified to ram
a greater amount of air into
the engine bay and to the
front brakes.
In a move that provides it
with an even more aggressive
stance than the Golf R, the
R400 receives unique wings
that have been widened by
20mm, giving it an added

At the cars unveiling in
China, Volkswagen officials
were coy about the chances
of the Golf R400 reaching
showrooms. However, sources
at its R division, which was
responsible for its conception,
development and engineering,
suggest that its close links
to the Golf R could be an
important factor in ensuring
that it reaches production on
a limited basis as a figurehead
for VWs increasingly active
performance car division.

new 7-series
An oversized kidney grille,
heavily structured fascia
and slim-line headlights
dominate a bold front end,
while a more elegant-looking
rear is distinguished by a
heavily angled rear window,
comparatively short bootlid
and uncharacteristically
shaped tail-lights.
The conceptual nature of
the Vision Future Luxurys
exterior is further reflected
in the flanks, which receive
prominent shoulders and
BMWs latest air vents behind
the front wheel arches.
The sides of the BMW
concept are supported by a
carbonfibre inner structure in
a move that allows the front
seats to form part of the loadbearing structure. This latter
treatment is thought to hint
at an innovative construction
process that will see the new
7-series receive lightweight
carbonfibre body sides similar
to those used by its i-brand
models as part of an effort to
provide the new luxury saloon
with a significant reduction in
kerb weight.
Pillarless doors are used
front and rear. But while the
front doors have conventional
front hinges, BMWs design
team has endowed the Vision
Future Luxury with rearhinged, coach-style doors to
ease entry to the rear, which
accommodates two deeply
contoured individual seats.
As with the exterior,
the four-seat interior is
highly conceptual in nature.

itron unveiled two new
DS models and a new

Beijing motor show.
The DS 6WR is inspired by
the Wild Rubis SUV concept
seen last year. DS exists as a
brand in its own right in the
Chinese market, and the 6WR is
the first DS SUV.
Designed in Paris but built
at the new DS plant in Shenzen
near Hong Kong, the DS
6WR is powered by a 1.6-litre
turbocharged four-cylinder
petrol engine with either
157bhp or 197bhp. Despite its
off-road looks, the DS 6WR is
front-wheel drive only.
The DS 6WR is for the time
being destined to be sold
only in China, which is now
Citrons number one market.
However, the models lack of
four-wheel drive and diesel
power shouldnt prove to be an
obstacle to future European
sales, as it sits on the same
platform as the DS5, so it would
accept its diesel engines and
an electric rear axle drive for
all-wheel drive.

HYUNDAIS iX25 COMPACT SUV concept closely previews a
production model destined for sale in the Chinese market. The
expanding global popularity of smaller SUVs means it is also
highly likely to be sold elsewhere around the world, once initial
demand in China has abated.
Based on the running gear of the Kia Soul, the Skoda Yeti-size

built in China before sales start this summer.
The ix25 looks like a shrink-wrapped ix35, with a distinctive
grille, wraparound lights and a tapering window line.

of the current Volvo XC90

production line will be sent to
a new facility in China built
by Volvo owners Geely. It is
understood that many of the
original XC90 engineering
team have been rehired by
Geely to work on the car and
reduce manufacturing costs.
The reborn XC90 will be
sold with a new name and is
expected to be made in China
for five years.
THE FIRST AUDI to get a
three-cylinder engine will be
the A1, with the A3 following
shortly afterwards, boss
Rupert Stadler has revealed.
The cars will use the engines
currently found in the
Volkswagen Up. Stadler said
there are currently no plans
to fit three-pot engines to the
next-generation A4.

A week in cars Frustrated over bad Jaguar ad; Ferrari bosss favourite things
SATURDAY/SUNDAY
Heres an important question:
do you think Jaguars Good to
be bad ads for the F-type coup
work? The billboards of west
London are currently poulticed
with them, but Im afraid I find
them distinctly puerile. Having
recently driven various editions
of the F-type coup, I now know
it to be an intelligent car, a
beautiful car, a subtle car, a car
capable of being appreciated
at all speeds on all roads by a
wide cross-section of drivers.
To portray it as some kind of
manhood extension strikes me
as lamentably trite.
I guess youve got to expect
the creatives who produce
such guff not to understand
Jaguars tradition for grace
as well as pace. Theyll be
doing mousetraps and Persil
tomorrow. The surprise is
that the ads were signed off by
Jaguars bosses. Id have backed
them to show more respect for
customers intelligence.

changes made to the inlet manifold
give it a more free-revving nature

Official figures put the 0-62mph

You need to be well on the way
towards its 199mph top speed before
experiencing the added downforce
brought on by the aerodynamic

noticeable reduction in front-end

stability when youre pushing

exhaust notes ever. The big V8 emits
a baritone rumble at low revs, growls

asy to forget, when youre sitting in the lush
surroundings of a premium crossover like
the Porsche Macan, that cars like these are
also built for terrain far ruder than their
manners. Crossovers are the progeny of pure
off-roaders whose roots go back to the WW2
Jeep and the original Land Rover, and many of
them still provide full-time four-wheel drive and the
hardware to keep going when the road runs out.
The Macan is one of these, its dauntingly
impressive bank of centre console switches housing
one labelled off-road, and another engages a hill
descent control to ease the cars passage down
treacherous slopes. More than that, all versions
come with electronically controlled four-wheel
drive, and those desiring this Porsche in its most
intrepid form can order it with height-adjustable air

outside only makes you want to fire
it up. So we do.
Why now? Because this year
Mitsubishi UK is importing just
40 examples of the Evo X in an FQ
440-MR specification, but thatll
surely be it for the Evo as we know it.
There should be another Evolution,
but it wont be quite like this. Were
effectively saying cheerio via the
best there is.
We choose Stoke-on-Trent for
the pictures, because we want
something urban and moody. There
are areas of decay and regeneration
here, but theres no analogy to be
made. Comparing a place to a car
always understates a citys past and
patronises its present and future. Its
just that some of the old brickworks
look right, and its close to the Peak
District for a thrash.
The trip there is a reminder that,
although I still think of the Evo
as a modern car, and 2000 is not
very long ago, things in motordom
change quickly. The Evo feels small

Fate had it in for the M235i on the
day we figured it. The MIRA proving
ground was saturated with rain and
BMW sent us a test car with a manual
gearbox (so no launch control),
no limited-slip diff and a worn set
of tyres. In light of those things,
cracking 60mph in 6.3sec and
100mph in 14.7sec was no mean feat.
A Vauxhall Astra VXR takes longer
on both counts in the dry.
We can well believe the car would
probably be quicker than BMWs
5.0sec 0-62mph claim in perfect
circumstances, because once our
test car found traction, it took off
at genuine sports car pace. From
80-130mph it matched the figures
set last year by a Porsche Cayman 2.7
to the tenth, despite stronger wind
and a near 200kg weight penalty.
And on in-gear flexibility pulling
from 30-70mph in fourth the
BMW obliterated the Porsches time

SPEC ADVICE
ncompromised style, premium desirability, performance in reserve, multi-faceted reardrive handling, improved practicality and even decent value for money. How much more
could we expect? Nothing at all. BMW has no obligation to make this car more usable than
a transverse-engined, front-drive Peugeot RCZ, for example, but it has. The M235is mix of
attributes is one that nothing else in the segment can touch. Its an outstanding car.
Nowhere will you find a more pleasing powertrain to interact with, or a faster car, for similar
money. And in only a couple of sports coups will you find a more rewarding driving experience.
Theyre the five-star cars below. And theres no shame for this BMW in losing out to either.
We regret only two things: that good old-fashioned suspension tuning seems to have fallen out
of fashion at BMW and that one or two of the items on the M235is options list arent standard.
Otherwise, this is a car to celebrate and enjoy unreservedly.

Dear Adrian,
I DONT KNOW the name of the
designer responsible for the interior
of the i3, but could you give him a
warm well done from me? The cabin
of that car is quite marvellous, from
its simple dash and the use of wood
along its horizontal surface to the
seat upholstery and more besides.
The most amazing thing is that
its made me want to own one, and
thats a shock because the i3 is an
electric car. Well, the one I drove was
the range-extender version, but the
point is that it didnt have a twin-cam
straight six with spun alloy intake
trumpets under its bonnet. Which is
the sort of BMW that usually gets me
all revved up.
I was rather taken by the interior of
the Renault Zoe, too, and as you know
theres not a spark plug to be found
on that car. Is there something about
electric cars that makes designers
step up a gear? It certainly seems
to have happened at your company.

FINAL REPORT During the past year and 16,000 miles, the Mazda 6 has proved to

azda made some bold claims
about its new saloon when it
was launched in 2013. Thanks
to the use of the brands new

distinctive Kodo design language, the
new Mazda 6 was reputed to be more
appealing, efficient and capable than
its predecessor.
I must admit I wasnt entirely sure
about the validity of the claims, initially
at least. The previous Mazda 6 had been
a very serviceable and capable family
car, but it wasnt desirable and always
felt confined to the also ran category.
It would have been an impressive feat if
Mazda had managed to up the ante so
dramatically in a single hit.
To say that the Mazda 6 has proved
far better than expected, however,
would be an understatement. In fact,

Performance
There is no mistaking the extra power of the RS Turbo. It
presents difficulties when accelerating from rest because
anything higher than 3000rpm causes excessive wheelspin.
Once on the move, an impressive surge of power can be felt,
although, as with most turbo conversions, performance is
deceptive. Lag is not a real problem.

The overall result is a drivers car that is as refined as it is fast.

to be in good condition. Its a manual, too. The car
has done just 78,000 miles and comes with a full
years MOT and tax. A dealer wants 1495.

WHAT IS IT?
The Porsche 911 Carrera in its latest 991 guise. Its faster, larger
and roomier than its 997 forebear and boasts a more upmarket
interior. Still, at 73,413, the Carrera 3.4 is the entry point into
Porsche 911 ownership. Its downsized 3.4-litre flat six manages to
catapult the base 911 from 0-62mph in 4.8sec and on to 178mph.
The latest 911s 3.4-litre lump delivers both its peak torque and peak power
1000rpm higher up the rev range than the previous 3.6-litre unit did. The
trademark flat six really announces itself above 5500rpm, where this 911
becomes engaging and effortlessly fast. But while the cars balance is nearperfect, its new electromechanical steering lacks the feel of a hydraulic set-up.
Hugely capable and exciting and with all the ingredients to blow your mind.
Rapid but brutal gearchanges are fired off via the single-clutch automated
manual transmission, while the chassis offers eye-watering levels of grip.
Best of all, you get to hear that mighty V10 with the roof down. The car does,
however, have a tendency to understeer initially when provoked.
The interior feels like it has been built around the driver, rather than
simply to accommodate one. Classy aluminium switchgear is clustered
logically around the helm, with function over form being the priority.
Space has improved for this 2+2 thanks to a longer wheelbase, but youll
still struggle to get anything more than an infant in the rear seats.
Because the 911 Carrera is the yardstick that rival car manufacturers
use when building a sports car. And despite the addition of efficiencyenhancing technology and the new electromechanical steering set-up,
this latest 991 incarnation of the 911 continues where the 997 left off
and remains at the top of its class. Just choose the options wisely.
It is one of the cheapest ways of getting into a Lamborghini supercar and the
Gallardo is one of the firms most reliable models. The Spyder is surprisingly
civilised to drive and features a level of quality and usability not normally
associated with a car of this kind. The added bonus is that at the touch of a button
the hood is lowered in around 20 seconds, opening you up to the elements.

Of the 2000 or so RV8s that were built, around threequarters were sold to the Japanese market. Some
have returned, however; there are more examples in
the UK now than were actually sold here. Prices range
from 10,000 to 30,000. The RV8s 1995 farewell
heralded the debut of the significantly more modern,
viable and dynamically convincing MGF roadster.
