Answer of Physics Short Questions 2065 '11

1. Answer in brief six questions. [6x2=12]
(a) Scalar product of two vectors is zero. What is the angle between them?
==> Let A and B be two vectors and X be the angle between them. Then,
scalar product= A.B= ABcosX
Magnitude of Vector Product= |A X B|= ABsinX
According to question,
A.B=|A X B|
or, ABcosX= ABsinX
or, tan X= 1
or, X= 45 degree.
(b) A swimmer wants to reach to a point just opposite to the other bank of the river. How should he
swim and why?

===> Let Vr be the velocity of river and Vm be the velocity of man in still river then to reach just
opposite point the man should swim making angle of Tan-1( Vr/Vm) with horizontal so that the
resultant of two velocities take him to the just opposite point.
(Figure is must.)
(c) Why a wrench of longer arm is preferred in comparison to a wrench of short arm?
===> Torque is turning effect or moment of force which is given by,
Torque= F X S
where, F is force applied and S is the perpendicular distance from action of the point from the
fulcrum.If arm of wrench is longer, S is longer so that small force may have large turning effect of
torque. So, a wrench of longer arm is preferred in comparison to a wrench of short arm
(d) Why a man getting out of bus should moving bus most run in the same direction for a certain
distance?
==> When the man gets out of bus, his lower part of body suddenly comes in rest but his upper part
of body tries to be in motion due to inertia of motion and may have serious accident. To avoid this, a
man getting out of bus should moving bus most run in the same direction for a certain distance
( try to avoid this type of question)
(e) A pendulum clock is taken into moon. Will it gain or lose time?
===> Time period of pendulum T is given by,
T= 2*pi root( l/g)
where, l is effect length of string and g is acceleration due to gravity.
When the simple pendulum is taken into moon, the value of g decreases. So, The time period
increases. Hence, the pendulum will lose time.
(f) Distinguish between specific gravity and Density.
==> Do in table
- Specific gravity is ratio of density of material to the density of pure water at 4 degree celsius. It has
no unit.
- Density is mass per unit volume. Its unit is kg/m^3.

2. Answer in brief any two questions. [2x2=4]

(a) Why are glass windows possible to be cracked in very cold region?
==> There is temperature difference inside and outside the room. The inner part of glass tends to
expand whereas the outer part of the glass tends to contract. Due to this, glass windows possible to
be cracked in very cold region.
(b) Air escaping out of the air hose at gas station always feels cold. Why?
==> The air escaping out from the air hose is adiabatic process. In adiabatic process dQ= 0,as,
dQ= dU+ dW
dU= -dW
the external work is done is expense of internal energy. As, internal energy decreases, temperature
also decreases hence feels cold as,
dU= CvndT
(c) Which has more molecules a kg of Hydrogen or a kg of Oxygen?
==> We know that the no. of molecules depends upon mole;
no. of moles= given weight/ molecular weight
As the given weight is same, the no. of molecules will be more for hydrogen as it has less molecular
weight.
3. Answer in brief any one question. [1x2=2]
(a) A spherical mirror is immersed in water. Will its focal length change?
- We know that, focal length (f)= R/2.
So, it is independent to the refractive index of the medium. So, the focal length of the spherical
mirror doesn't change.
(b) Can you ever have situation in which light rays goes without deviation through the prism?
==> Yes, when a prism which is made of material having refractive index mui is placed in the
medium with the refractive index then, there will have situation in which light rays goes without
deviation through the prism.
4. Answer in brief any one question. [1x2=2]

(a) A man inside insulated metallic cage doesn't receive shock when the cage is highly charged.
Why?
==>
Gauss' law, which states that the flux is equal to net charge enclosed divided by Eo(permittivity in
vacuum) It is clear from the problem that there is no charge inside the sphere, because the charge
always reside outside the bodies. When there is no charge inside, implies the flux is zero. Hence, A
man inside insulated metallic cage doesn't receive shock when the cage is highly chargedWhen the
flux is zero, then electric field is also zero.
(b) How will you arrange three capacitors each having capacity of 2 microfarad, to get a capacitor of
capacity 3 microfarad.
==> Let C1 C2 C3 be the capacitance of the capacitors then,C1= C2= C3= 2
If C1 and C2 are connected in series,
Cs= C1* C2/ (C1+ C2)= 1and, the follwing combination is connected in parallel with C3,
Ceq= Cs+ C3= 1+2=3
