Classifications of Softwares
Free Software
- These are softwares that can be freely used, and shared by
anyone.

Open-source Software
- These are softwares that can be freely used, changed, and
shared by anyone.
- The source code of these softwares are freely available.

We often do not distinguish these and call them Free and

Open-Source Softwares (FOSS)
Licensed Software
- These are softwares whose licenses are granted to users by
software developers within a specified period of time.

Advantages of FOSS

Economic Benefits
- There are minimal costs on acquiring the software and people
can freely share the same without having to breach licenses.

Technical Benefits
- It makes it possible for more people to see the code and to fix
it, thus making the software develop faster and become better.

Usage
- FOSS can tend to evolve in line with the developers
preference rather than the users needs.

Support
- There may also be less support in case things go wrong with
the software.

Support
- The distributors offer a stable system support if it fails or
malfunction.

Usage
- It is often easier to install and use since the production is
planned and extensive research is carried out to ensure the
quality of the software.

Cost
- Users need to pay for the purchase of the software and its
improvements.

Sharing
- Users are not allowed to share the software whenever the
license do not specify it.

Customization
- Users cannot customize the software since the source code is
kept by the manufacturers.
