BDS Subsystem
BDS subsystem serves as the CBTS communication control center. In
addition, it implements baseband signal processing such as baseband
signals modulation and demodulation, linear summation, Abis interface
functions, and cell sharing.
BDS subsystem contains the following boards:

Above figure does not shows the BIM board. BIM board functions as an interface
unit, which either connects BDS with BSC or extended BTS.
28
transmits data to the BSC either directly using the Abis interface or
through the SNM board.
RFS Subsystem
Radio Frequency Subsystem (RFS) implements forward/reverse link
processing, which converts forward baseband signals into amplified RF
signals, and reverse RF signals to baseband signals.
RFS subsystem consists of following board types:
Block Diagram
Figure 9 shows the RFS subsystem block diagram.

CCM board complies with the following standards:
Power: 24 W
EMC
Caution:
Radiators are CCM board component. Long working hours of CCM board results
in heating up of radiators. Avoid touching radiators or power supply parts.
The -48 V power supply input voltage exceeds safety limits for human contact.
Ensure adequate safety measures. Keep safe distance from power supply parts to
avoid any electric shock risk.
DSM
DSM board performs relay, data transfer and Abis interface signal
processing.
DSM board supports following E1/T1 configuration:
4 E1/T1
8 E1/T1
12 E1/T1
16 E1/T1
52
CPU
CPU uses a firmware to control the board components.
Control stream port connects DSM board with CCM board control
stream.
Media stream port connects DSM board with CCM board media
stream.
HW interface unit
HW interface unit is used only when DSM board is directly connects
SNM board. HW interface unit supports Highway data. When the HW
interface is used, E1 transmission in the same direction is unnecessary.
Switching unit
Switching unit provides functions as time
connection, order wire routing, and switching.

CHM0
CHM0 board is based upon ASIC chip (QUALCOMM CSM5000) and supports
CDMA2000-1X Release A service.
CHM0 board provides the following basic functions:

system
Forward link converts voice frames distributed from the CCM board
through the Ethernet interface into a standard format required by
the baseband processing chip. After baseband processing such as
convolution coding, element repetition, interleaving, WALSH
orthogonal spread, long code scrambling, PN code complicated
orthogonal expansion, and QPSK modulation inside the baseband
processing chip, baseband signals are output to the RIM board
based on system configuration of carrier and sector.
Reverse link receives antenna data distributed from the RIM board,
performs processing opposite to that of forward link, such as
demodulation, and converts them into voice frames. After CPU
processing, CCM board receives them through the ethernet
interface for switching.
CPU unit
CPU unit manages and coordinates with the entire network, and
provides multiple external interface controllers.
FE unit
FE unit provides control and media stream interfaces between the
CHM0 and CCM boards.
Multiplexing/demultiplexing unit
Multiplexing/demultiplexing unit multiplexes the forward baseband
signals into high-speed signals. It demultiplexes reverse high-speed
signals into baseband data formats.
Control unit
Control unit decodes and controls board peripherals.
Clock unit
Receives and distributes GPS clock required by each board component.

CHM1
CHM1 board is based upon ASIC chip (QUALCOMM CSM5500). It supports
CDMA2000-1X EV-DO services, with forward rate ranging from 38.4 Kbps
to 2.4576 Mbps and reverse rate ranging from 9.6 Kbps to 153.6 Kbps.
CHM1 board performs following basic functions:
CHM1 board has two external 100 MB Ethernet interfaces, for media
and control streams.
Forward link converts CCM board data frames through forward CPU
into a standard format required by CSM5500. After baseband
processing such as convolutional coding, element repetition,
interleaving, WALSH orthogonal spread, long code scrambling, and
PN code orthogonal expansion, baseband signals are output to the
RIM board based on carrier-sector configuration.
Reverse link receives data distributed from the RIM board through
the baseband data interface. Reverse baseband processing part
converts them into voice frames. After reverse CPU system
processing, CCM board receives frames for switching through the
Ethernet interface.
Forward CPU
Forward CPU controls and processes forward, including storage and the
debugging interface.

interleaving, Walsh quardrature spreading, long code scrambling, PN
code quardrature extension processing of forward baseband data, and
reverse data processing.
Mux/Demux unit
Mux is responsible for multiplexing the forward baseband signal to the
high-rate signal. The Demux is responsible for demuliplex the reverse
high-rate signal to the data format that the CSM unit supports.
Clock unit
Clock unit receives and distributes the GPS clock needed by the CHM2
board components.
Power and hot swap unit supplies required power to the CHM2 board
components, provides over-current and over-voltage protection, and
supports hot swap function for the power supply board.

reverse baseband data and HDLC signaling from the TRX board, makes
selection based on CCM board signaling, sends the selected data broadcast
to the CHM boards for processing.

GCM
GCM board generates synchronous timing and frequency reference signals.
It receives signals from the GPS/GLONASS satellite system, extracts and
produces 1PPS signals and navigation messages. In addition, it produces
PP2S, 19.6608 MHz and 30 MHz signals and relevant TOD messages using
1PPS signals as the phase-locking reference. GCM board works in
active/standby mode, and provides suitable interfaces for GPS/GLONASS
receiver unit.

Technical Indices
SAM board monitors and generates alarms for fans, door access control,
infrared, smoke, and flooding. The Boolean value detection accuracy is
100%.
SAM board monitors humidity/temperature of rack interior and equipment
room. The non-electrical parameter measurement accuracy is more than
5%. The temperature and humidity measurement accuracy is less than or
equal to 5 %. Temperature measurement range is 0 ~ 50 C and
humidity measurement range is 10% ~ 95% RH.
The monitoring system response time is less than 10 seconds. It means
that alarm messages are transferred to the background system in 10
seconds.
TRX
TRX board is responsible for base station wireless performance. It supports
450, 800 and 1900 MHz frequencies, and its basic performance meets the
TIA/EIA-97-D protocol requirements.

F I G U R E 6 6 - P O W E R C A B L E L AY O U T
By means of external power cable, -48 VDC and -48VGND power supply is
input to -48 V and -48 VGND interfaces respectively.
These input
interfaces distribute -48 VDC and -48 VGND power supply to the (RFS
Power Filter) RPF, and to (Thunder Protective Board) TPB. TPB filter
distributes the -48 VDC to RCB and -48 VGND to the DC busbar. (RFS
Circuit Breaker) RCB distributes -48 V to DC busbar. DC busbar has several
interfaces that connect the CBTS backplane.

Lightning Arrester
Lightning arrester efficiently prevents lightning strokes that may lead in
through the base station feeder. A 1/4 short-circuit lightning arrester
employs 1/4 short-circuit principles and has a coaxial cavity inside the
protector. It is similar to a short circuit in parallel with the coaxial
transmission line. Its one end connects to the core and the other to
ground. For thunder current, it is similar to a 1/4 metallic conductor
directly short-circuited to the ground for lightning protection.
