FS3 Service and repair watches
This standard is for those who service and repair watches to order.
The job role may involve:
1. Identifying the service requirements
2. Servicing the watch
3. Completing the service of the watch

The competent person must:


1. Examine the watch presented by the customer and discuss their requirements
2. Identify the type of watch and the service requirements
3. Agree the work to be done, the length of time the servicing will take and costs
4. Dismantle the watch to its component parts
5. Select the correct battery
6. Make adjustments to the watch as appropriate
7. Clean the watch
8. Check the moving parts
9. Re-set the watch
10. Make it ready for the customer by confirming the serviced watch maintains accurate time
The key areas of knowledge and understanding:

The limitations on the types of watches that can be serviced using the equipment available.
The different types of watches which you may service.
How to prepare an invoice for the customer and where necessary a receipt for their watch
The characteristics of different types of battery.
The causes of common or typical faults with watches.
What sort of faults require specialist repairers and should be left alone
The common problems that arise with the moving parts of watches.
What is the accuracy expected of different types of watches.
Those problems, which you cannot repair, during routine servicing.

The skills and techniques:


1. Working out how much services cost and how long work takes
2. Using the right tools for different types of watch
3. Testing procedures for watch batteries
4. Adjusting watch mechanisms
5. Cleaning the moving parts of watches and ensuring that they work correctly.
6. Re-setting and regulating watches
7. Re-assembling watches
8. Checking that watches keep time when re-assembled
9. Types of watch: those without moving parts, digital and analogue, those with moving parts.
10. Batteries: replaceable batteries, rechargeable batteries
11. Equipment: jewellers loupes, small hand tools, vices, miniature screwdrivers, specialised tools for
