Answer ALL questions:

11. (i) (a) Describe the working and principles of reciprocating pump.
(11)
(b) What is priming in centrifugal pump? why is it necessary?
(5)
Or
(ii) (a) What is reciprocating pump? Describe the principle and working of a double acting
reciprocating pump with neat sketch.
(13)
(b) Define Cavitation.
(3)
12. (i) A single acting reciprocating pump running at 30rpm,delivers 0.012m 3/s of water. The
diameter of the piston is 25cm and stroke length 50cm.determine.(i) the theoretical discharge of the
pump,(ii) coefficient of discharge and, (iii) slip and percentage of the slip.
(16)
Or
(ii) The diameter and stroke of a single acting reciprocating pump are 200mm and 400mm
respectively, the pump runs at 60rpm and lifts 12litres of water per second through a height of 25m.
The delivery pipe is 20m long and 150mm in diameter. Find i) Theoretical power required to run
the pump ii) Percentage of slip iii) Acceleration head at the beginning and middle of the delivery
stroke.
(16)
13. (i) The length and diameter of a suction pipe of a single acting reciprocating pump are 5m and
10m respectively. The pump has a plunger of diameter 15cm and a stroke length of 35cm.the centre
of the pump is 3m above the water surface in the pump. The atmospheric head of is 10.3m of water
and pump is running at 35rpm.determine. (i) Pressure head due to acceleration at the beginning of
the suction stroke. (ii) Maximum pressure head due to acceleration.(iii) pressure head in the
cylinder at the beginning and at the end of the stroke.
(16)
Or
(ii) The diameter and stroke length of a single acting reciprocating pump are 12cm and 20cm
respectively. The length of suction and delivery pipes is 8m and 25m respectively and their
diameters are 7.5cm. if the pump is running at 40rpm and suction and delivery heads are 4m and
14m respectively, find the pressure head in the cylinder:
(i)at the beginning of the suction and delivery stroke.
(ii) at the middle of the suction and delivery stroke.
(iii) at the end of the suction and delivery stroke.
Take atmospheric pressure head =10.3m of water and f=0.009 for both pipes.
(16)

14. (i) (a)Explain the operation of a centrifugal pump with the help of a neat sketch. Write short
notes on different types of casing used in centrifugal pumps.
(10)
(b) Explain the working principles of vane pump and gear pump with neat sketches. (6)
Or
(ii) A centrifugal pump having outer diameter equal to 2 times the inner diameter and running at
1200rpm works against a total head of 75m. The velocity of the flow through the impeller is
constant and equal to 3m/sec. the vanes are set back at an angle of 30 at outlet. If the outer
diameter of the impeller is 600mm and width at outlet is 50mm. Determine i) Vane angle at inlet ii)
Work done per sec by the impeller iii) Manometric efficiency.
(16)
15. (i) (a)The impeller of a centrifugal pump has an external diameter of 450mm and internal
diameter of 200mm and it runs at 1440rpm. Assuming a constant radial flow through the impeller at
2.5m/sec. and that the vanes at exit are set back at an angle of 25. Determine i)Inlet vane angle ii)
The angle, absolute velocity of water at exit makes with the tangent and iii) The work done per N of
water.
(10)
(b) Explain the working of multistage centrifugal pump with neat sketch.
(6)
Or
(ii) A three stage centrifugal pump has impeller 40cm in diameter and 2cm wide at outlet. The
vanes are curved back at the outlet at 450 and reduce the circumferential area by 10%.the
Manometric efficiency is 90% and the overall efficiency is 80%.determine the head generated by
the pump when running at 1000rpm.delivers 50 litres per second. What should be the shaft
horsepower?
