steel .

e] State the magnitude of stress i nduced in a bar having
cross sectional area A

B] Attempt any TWO:

a] Calculate the M I of a triangle having base 100 mm and


height 150

about its base and centroidal ax is parallel to the base.
b] State the assumptions made in th eory of simple bending .
c] A member has c/s of 10 mm x 20 mm. It is subjected to a
load of 20kN
which is applied suddenly . Calcu late the strain energy
absorbed by it.

a] A bar of 20 mm in diameter is tested in tension on


UTM .The loads at yield
point, ultimate point and breaking points are 120kN, 200kN,
and 160kN
respectively.
Final diameter of bar is 12 mm. D etermine the yield
stress ,ultimate stress ,
nominal breaking stress and actual breaking stress .

b] Determine the total elongation of the bar shown in fig no.1. If

c] A bar is having dimensions 10 mm x 20 mm x 1000 mm. It is
subjected to an

punch of 16 mm diameter is used to punch a hole in a

thick. The ultimate punching force required is 160kN.
Calculate the shear stress

b] A RCC column of 230 mm x 230 mm is reinforced with 4 bars
of 12 mm dia.
Determine the stresses induced in concrete and steel if it
is subjected to an
axial load of 250 kN. Take E = 12GPa and Es = 200GPa .

c] A cantilever beam of a building ha ving span of 3m is subjected
to udl of 20kN/m
over entire span . Determine the ma ximum bending stresses if
the c/s of beam i s

d] A bar of 32 mm diameter is subje cted to a load of 100kN
which is dropped
from a height of 300mm on to the collar attached at the
other end of a bar.
Determine the instantaneous stress i nduced due to this impact
load . Take

fig 2 indicating all the values at i mportant points .
b] Draw SF and BM diagrams for an ove rhanging beam as shown in
fig no. 3.
Locate the point of contraflexure i f any .
c] Determine the forces in the members AB, AF, AG & BG alongwith
their nature
for the frame subjected to loads as shown in fig .no. 4

a] A plane element in a body is subject ed to normal stresses of
100 N/ mm and

200 N/ mm both tensile in nature on its two faces. It is
accompanied by shear

stress of 50 N/ mm . Determine the principal stresses and
maximum shear stress .
Locate the principal planes and pla ne of maximum shear.
b] Draw SF & BM diagrams for the cantil ever beam loaded as shown
in fig no. 5 .
Indicate the values at important poi nts .
c] A simply supported beam of span 6 m is subjected to udl of
50 kN/ m over its
entire span. The section of the beam is hollow rectangular
section with outer a nd
inner dimensions of 250mm x 250mm and 1 50mm x 150mm respectively .
Sketch the
shear stress distribution diagram showi ng all the details in it

shown in fig no. 6 .
b] A rectangular section having dimensio ns of 200mm x 400mm is
subjected to a

force of 80kN Determine the shear s tresses induced on a
layer at 100mm above
the NA & 50 mm below the NA.
c] Determine the forces alongwith their nature in the members
CD,CF and CG of the
cantilever frame loaded as shown in fig no. 7 . Tabulate your
results .
