light coming from the cockpit of your boat and a simple bait strategy and you should be able
to fill up your fish box quickly.
There two basic bait strategies to use at night: flatlining through a chumline and bottom
fishing. Both offer relatively easy tackle set up, but be sure to set up your rigs before your leave
the dock — having to re-rig or tie knots at night can be a bit more challenging than during
the day. Be sure to bring a few rods with similar set ups. Night fishing also allows you the
opportunity to use a slightly heavier line at night as its also less visible. That 10-to-20-pound
test that might scare the scales off a yellowtail or mutton snapper during the day becomes
nearly invisible to the fish in the dark.
Flatlining with a healthy chumline is a great method to catch yellowtail snapper, as the
fish are typically much closer to the boat at night, especially those lunkers that we all dream
about catching. Other species — including mangrove, lane and mutton snappers — will also
venture into the chumline as long as you’re not fishing deep water with your bait too far away
from the protection of the reef structure. A strip of ballyhoo or any chunk size bait drifting
without weights in the chumline should produce decent action and results. Always be sure
to anchor far enough up current from your target reef spot so that your chumline draws fish
towards your bait and your anchor doesn’t damage the fragile coral.
If the target is mutton snapper, larger yellowtail, or grouper on the reefs, bottom fishing
is the best way to produce results at night. Live pilchards or pinfish on a mono leader with
R ecord high temperatures in the Florida Keys this winter have made daytime fishing on
the reefs a sticky proposition. I’m sure our usual winter cold fronts are on their way,
hopefully providing relief, but November and early December had been downright hot with
enough sinker weight to just hold bottom will put you firmly in the game. Be sure to get your
fish to the boat quickly once you hook up as sharks on the reef are in feeding mode at night
daytime temperatures in the 80-plus degree range. That’s enough to wear down even the most and that can often lead to the more fish heads coming over the gunwale than dinner fare.

inshore and offshore. Why depend on your memory when you can write it down?
Here are some of reasons why people keep fishing journals:
•To follow and observe the migration patterns of a particular target species
• To create a useful database that helps increase fishing-to-catching ratios
• To pinpoint successful fishing tactics and techniques
• To track and record the daily catches
• To map your favorite fishing spots by logging in GPS coordinates
Easy-to-use, reference fishing journals can help you improve your fishing success and
productivity. One such product, FishTales Fishing Logs, helps make the task of keeping
detailed records of when, where, and how well the fish were feeding a treat, not a chore.
Their easy to follow pages assist in recording weather conditions, barometric pressure, winds,
temperatures, tide and moon phases, and many other important and helpful details from each
trip. They also allow you to record and keep track of useful client information, organized
