The University of Oslo

The University of Oslo is a renowned institution with strong
academic traditions which offers high quality education and
research. As a student you will have access to all of this in
the beautiful city of Oslo.

A leading European university

The University of Oslo (UiO) was
founded in 1811, and is Norways oldest, premier, and largest institution of
higher education. UiO has contribu
ted substantially to research, innovation, and education in and outside of
Norway.
The University of Oslo offers degree
programmes within eight faculties:
Theology, Law, Medicine, Humanities,
Mathematics and Natural Sciences,
Dentistry, Social Sciences, and Education. We offer more than 800 courses taught in English at all levels, and
40 Masters degree programmes are
taught in English.
Students at the University of Oslo have
access to excellent lecture and university library facilities; the the awardwinning library building has become a
popular meeting place. Students at UiO
live and learn in a positive and inclusive learning environment.

International university
Over 10 % of the student population at
the University of Oslo has an international background. Oslo is an international capital with people and culture

The University of Oslo coordinates eight
Centres of Excellence (SFF), a Centre
for Research-based Innovation, seven
Marie Curie Training Sites, three of Norways foremost museums as well as

Troms and Oslo. Our research groups
have been given the SFF-title for a period of ten years, and UiOs first three
SFFs were established in 2003.

Nobel Prize laureates

Four researchers at the University of
Oslo has been rewarded with Nobel
prizes for their research, more than all
the other Norwegian universities.
Ragnar Frisch (1895-1973) was
awarded the very first Nobel Prize
in Economics in 1969.
Odd Hassel (1897-1981) was awarded
the 1969 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
Ivar Giver (1929- ) received the
Nobel Prize in Physics in 1973.
Trygve Haavelmo (1911-99) won the
Nobel Prize for his work in Econo
metrics.

The capital of Norway is welcoming, vibrant, and cosmopolitan.

Oslo offers a varied cultural life and easy access to outdoor
experiences on the coast, in the forests, and in the mountains.

UiO in Oslo
The University of Oslos original campus is located in the city centre, adjacent to the Royal Palace and the Parliament. The main campus of Blindern,
just minutes by subway, tram, or bicycle from the heart of Oslo, offers proximity to the forests and hills surrounding the city and affords wonderful
views of the Oslo Fjord. As most Norwegians speak English, it is easy to find
ones way around.
The city of everything
Oslo is smaller than most capitals, but
offers all the cultural activities one expects to find in a capital as well as the
beautiful nature surrounding the city
and the University. The Norwegian
capital is home to almost 600 000 inhabitants, and over 10 % of the entire
population of Norway. Among Oslos
60 000 students, almost 75 % come
from outside Oslo.
Fjord city
The city of Oslo lies at the end of the
100 km Oslo Fjord and is surrounded by sea, forests, and hills. You can
reach many of the 40 islands in the
Oslo Fjord by boat from downtown
Oslo. The climate in Oslo is milder than
the latitude suggests, and in the summertime the temperature normally

exceeds 20C. Yet, the winters are cold

enough to make Oslo a popular venue
for skiing.

Green and fresh

Oslos many parks cover over 8 km2
of the city. Over 50 % of the city area
of Oslo is covered by forest and parks,
and there are hundreds of lakes within
the city limits.

top of the Oslo Fjord. The spectacular
building is designed by the Norwegian
architectural firm Snhetta.

indulge in more than 350 kilometers of
prepared trails.
05 Oslo lies in the south-eastern part of
Norway, and is a perfect venue for
discovering the rest of the country.

You can travel to see the Aurora Borealis (Northern lights), experience the
midnight sun, and discover the beautiful fjords and mountains all over the

Student life
There is so much more to being a student than studying. More
than 300 active student associations, societies, and organisations contribute to a rich and varied social life for students at
the University of Oslo.

General facilities
The University of Oslos lecture rooms,
laboratories, and computer labs are
well-equipped and maintained, and the
study facilities include state-of-the-art
libraries and a wireless network zone
for portable computer users. International students often comment positively on the availability and approachability of teachers.
Start with friendships
At the beginning of each semester you
are introduced to a Buddy a student
who has taken responsibility for introducing the University of Oslo and the
city to new students. When joining a
Buddy group, you quickly get to know
new students during the first week of
your stay.
Every semester, the University of Oslo
arranges a special events programme
for international students, such as museum tours, hiking trips, ski courses,
film evenings, and the weekly International Coffee Hour. The International Coffee Hour is a popular meeting
place for international and Norwegian
students and is held every Friday from
16.00 to 18.00 at the student house
Chateau Neuf.

Student organisations and democracy

Founded in 1813, the Norwegian Student Society, based in the student building Chateau Neuf, is Norways oldest
student association. It offers concerts,
lectures, improvised theatre, club concepts, parties, exhibitions, and courses.
Chateau Neuf has its own library, reading room, caf, and restaurant.

Stay in shape and eat well

You can choose among 60 different
sports activities in four trainingcentres offered by the SiO Student Sports,
ranging from basketball, swimming,
squash to climbing, dance and yoga.
You can get a customized, individual training programme, participate in
group training, and get-started classes.

As an international student at the University of Oslo, you become a member

of ISU an independent, democratic,
non-profit organisation run for and by
international students. ISU publishes a
newsletter and arranges academic and
social events.

At UiO you can eat at more than 40 oncampus restaurants and cafes with a
varied selection of menus at studentfriendly prices.

Student democracy at the University of

Oslo is organised on many levels, from
members of the Student Parliament to
student representatives at the department level. Norwegian law ensures students 20 % of the members on boards
and committees at the university.

Health and counselling

The campus has student health centres with general practitioners, nurses,
psychiatrists, psychologists and dentists. There is also a team of professional counselors to whom students can
turn for advice in academic, financial
or personal matters.

Budget and living costs

The national currency in Norway is the
Norwegian kroner (NOK), and 1 is approximately 7,5 NOK. To give you an idea
of the living expenses for a student in
Norway, we have put together a modest
budget.
There are no tuition fees at the University of Oslo. There is a semester registration fee of NOK 550 and a copy fee
of NOK 100. Student housing is reasonably priced, and students under 30
are entitled to reduced fares on public
transport. Most social events on campus are either free of charge or offered
at student-friendly prices. International students with satisfactory study progression may be able to apply for a

part-time work permit. International students are allowed to work maximum 20 hours per week.
The University of Oslo does not control sources of student funding and can
not assist students financially. Cost
of living grants are only awarded to
international students accepted for

Academic system
The University of Oslo offers courses and Masters degree
programmes taught in English, in a wide variety of subject areas.

Study programmes
A study programme is a continuous
course of study comprised of courses
and course groups. The length of study
programmes depend on the degree to
which they lead.
The University of Oslo currently offers more than 40 Masters degree programmes taught entirely in English.
The University does not currently offer any Bachelors degree programmes
taught in English.

Courses offered in English

The University of Oslo offers courses in English both at Bachelors and at
Masters degree levels. The courses offered in English are aimed particularly
at exchange students.
Teaching methods
Teaching methods at UiO include lectures, seminars, laboratory work,
workshops, group exercises, practical
and problem-based learning and self
study. Read more about the teaching

Academic performance
Academic performance at the University of Oslo is assessed on the basis of
participation, examinations, and term

assignments. The UiO employs either

a grading scale with letter values or a
grading scale with only pass/fail values in the assessment of examinations.
The pass/fail scale is applied as an independent scale with only two possible
results, and is not connected to the letter grades. The grading scale with letter values is a descending scale where
A is the best grade, E the lowest pass
grade and F is fail. The assessment is
based on defined, qualitative criteria
for each grade in the grading scale. For

Courses and credit system

All courses at the university have a
unique code consisting of letters and

An international student at the UiO is
normally a student with a residence
permit for study purposes in Norway:

numbers. The letters often reflect the

courses subject area or the course
name: ARA for example means Arabic, while BIO means biology. The
numbers have four digits, where the
first digit indicates the level of study
for the course.

Masters degree programmes

Tuition for Masters degree programmes at the University of Oslo is
free, but students must document their
ability to cover their own living expenses. See page 16.

The credit system used for courses at

the University of Oslo is based on the
European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS). A full semester workload amounts to 30 credits. The study programmes consist of
courses that are normally worth 10
ECTS credits each.

Exchange students
The University of Oslo has exchange
agreements with universities around
the world and participates in a number
of international exchange programmes,
such as Nordplus and Erasmus. Exchange students normally study at
the University of Oslo for one or two
semesters, and summer programmes
are also available. Scholarships are
also available under programmes such
as Erasmus, Nordplus/Nordlys and
the EEA Financial Mechanisms programme. See page 14.
Quota scheme
The Norwegian Quota Scheme is a
funding scheme offered by the Norwegian government to students from
developing countries, Central and
Eastern Europe, and Central Asia, for
studies at institutions of higher edu-

cation in Norway. Quota Scheme applicants come from universities/institutions that have formal cooperation
agreements with the University of
Oslo. Quota applicants may apply for
selected Masters degree programmes
and PhD programmes. For more information, see page 20.

Bachelors degree programmes

All Bachelors programmes at the University of Oslo are taught in Norwegian. Applicants with a valid Norwegian language proficiency test should
apply through Norwegian Universities
and Colleges Admission Service (NUCAS). For more information see samordnaopptak.no. This also applies to applicants who plan to take a Norwegian
language test in the near future.
The University of Oslo normally offers a limited number of places for international applicants to Bachelors
programmes. Admitted students must
successfully complete a Norwegian
language course that lasts up to one
year before starting the programme.

Exchange & cooperation programmes

As an exchange student at our university, you may choose
among more than 800 different courses taught in English.
The University of Oslo also offers Norwegian language courses,
as well as a broad range of Scandinavian Studies courses.

Bilateral agreements
The University of Oslo has bilateral exchange agreements with more than
100 universities worldwide. Depending on the specifics of the agreement,
bilateral exchange students may spend
one or two semesters at the University
of Oslo as part of their degree.
Erasmus
The Erasmus Life-long Learning programme offers student exchange opportunities within the European Union and the EEA area. The University
of Oslo has taken part in Erasmus since
1991, and has signed more than 400 exchange agreements with approximately 200 partner universities in Europe.
Nordplus/Nordlys
Nordplus is a mobility programme for
students at institutions of higher education in the Baltic and Nordic regions.
Students from Nordic institutions that
do not have a Nordplus agreement
with a counterpart at the University
at Oslo may apply through the Nordlys exchange network. Nordic students
who speak a Scandinavian language
may also apply for courses from the
Universitys entire course catalogue.

EEA and Norway Grants Programme

The EEA Financial Mechanisms Programme offers study-abroad scholarships for students from selected countries in Eastern and Southern Europe.
The University of Oslo accepts EEA
scholarship students from institutions
that have a prior exchange agreement
with the University of Oslo. The scholarships are administered by local authorities in each eligible country, and
application processes are different in
the different countries. To find out if
you can apply for an EEA scholarship,
please contact the international office
at your home institution.
The International Summer School (ISS)
Every summer the ISS welcomes approximately 550 students from around
90 countries to its six-week summer
term. This diverse student body transforms the UiO campus into a global village, creating a unique international
learning environment. The ISS offers
courses at the Bachelors level focusing
on the Norwegian language and various aspects of Norwegian culture and
society, as well as a number of Masters
courses dealing with internationally
relevant topics. In addition to its academic programme, the ISS offers an extensive array of excursions as well as
cultural and social activities. A limited

number of scholarships are available.

The Oslo Summer School in

Comparative Social Science Studies
The Oslo Summer School in Comparative Social Science Studies consists of
several postgraduate research courses at the Faculty of Social Sciences.
The main target group is doctoral students interested in comparative social
science. In addition, researchers, research scholars, and MA students hoping to continue with advanced studies

Fulbright
The U.S.-Norway Fulbright Foundation
for Educational Exchange offers study
grants for graduate students from the
USA. Projects can be either full-time
study or a combination of independent
research and advanced courses or seminars. Fulbright students at the University of Oslo may follow most courses
taught in English at the Masters and
PhD levels. The Fulbright U.S. Student
Program also offers English Teaching
Assistantship (ETA) awards. Applicants
to both programmes must be U.S. citizens at the time of their application.

Science without Borders (SwB)

The Science without Borders (SwB)
programme offers study abroad scholarships for students from Brazil.
Through the SwB programme, students from Brazil may spend two semesters at the University of Oslo (UiO)
as part of their studies. The scholarship
is funded by the Brazililan government
and coveres subjects mainly within the
STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). For more
