Introduction
One word about how my ebook is organized. If the reader only wants to
know about the source of the information and how I used it to solve my psoriasis
puzzle, skip ahead to the Pulling It all Together section.
However, if the reader wants to know the details of my journey - how all of
this came together - just continue reading.
Sometime in the late sixties, a rash appeared on my upper lip. Since I had a
mustache at the time, it was not a big deal. I considered the rash to be a minor
annoyance and I did not really pay much attention to it. During an appointment
with a dermatologist, in the early seventies, I was told that it was psoriasis. I was
given a prescription for a topical cream and sent on my way. The cream did not
really help and it certainly did not solve anything. Besides, it was still no big deal
to me.
However, the psoriasis began to spread, next appearing on the back of my
neck, spreading to my forehead, to my elbows, to the back of my legs, and after a
number of years, to my hips.
By 1990, my psoriasis had developed to a point that it appeared on various
areas of my body from my feet to the top of my head and on most parts in between.
My psoriasis was out of control, I had no answers, and I could no longer ignore it.
A visit to a dermatologist got the following diagnosis. Keith, you have
psoriasis. We do not know what causes it and there is nothing that you can do for
it. I was given a prescription for a cream that contained a low level of
hydrochloric acid and was told that the prescription cream would dissolve the
dried skin so that it doesnt look so bad. I knew that this was not the answer I was
looking for and threw the prescription in the trash.
That meeting with the dermatologist in 1990 was rock bottom for me as far
as my psoriasis was concerned. After I got over the initial shock of the doctors
diagnosis, I came to the conclusion that he was only partially correct. He was right
when he said that I did not know what was causing the psoriasis. However, he was
wrong when he said there is nothing that you can do about it. No one has the
right to tell me there is nothing that you can do. There is always something that I
can do. It may not work, but no one was going to stop me from trying. An internal

fire had been lit. That fire still burns within me today. I came to the conclusion
that I could and that I would do better than that. And, I have.
Every time I think of that conversation, I get angry. That anger makes me
even more determined than ever to do everything that I can to take a bite out of the
mystique and mystery that has been surrounding psoriasis for far too long.
For the next few years, I purchased every book I saw that had psoriasis in
the title. If someone suggested that I try something, I would check it out, and in
some cases, try it.
However, I did find that I had my limits. When someone suggested that I try
Urine Therapy, I immediately said no. This was definitely well beyond the
limit of what I was willing to try.
I did try coffee enemas for a while. I thought that I saw some temporary
improvement; but, I eventually became discouraged and stopped the treatments. I
will say this, I am sure that Juan Valdez (if he really exists) would have a fit if he
knew what I was doing with his 100% Columbian coffee. After all, I wanted
nothing but the best for my colon.
Over the years, I have tried to maintain a good sense of humor, even though
sometimes it has been very difficult.

The Discovery Years (1998 - 2008)

My learning experience began when I bought the book Healing Psoriasis,
The Natural Alternative by Dr. John Pagano. When I first read the book, I was
thrilled. What Dr. Pagano had to say really made sense to me. However, when I
read about the diet outlined by Dr. Pagano, I was stopped dead in my tracks. Most
of what I ate, on a regular basis, was on Dr. Paganos Foods to Avoid List. Even
though this fact alone was confirmation that Dr. Paganos approach was the one I
needed to follow, I knew that I could not consistently conform to the regimen. I set
the book aside and continued looking for easier answers.
At this point in my life, I was unwilling to make major dietary changes on
just a chance that it would work. I needed something more tangible than just
words. I needed visible proof that any proposed regimen would work on my
psoriasis.

In the fall of 1999, I was advised by a family physician to use a coloncleansing program to deal with a suspected yeast problem. Included in the starter
kit was a copy of the book Conquering Yeast Infections by S. Colet Lahoz. I
read the instructions for Phase I of the colon-cleansing program and got started.
The book recommended that the mixture be consumed twice a day. At the time, I
had a full time job. Putting together this mixture in the middle of the afternoon,
while at work, on a consistent basis was just not practical. However, making this
routine the first thing that I did each morning was easy. So, that was exactly what I
did for the next six months.
Imagine my surprise when, within a few days, the healing effect on my
psoriasis was highly visible. This was the actual proof that I had been looking for.
I went back to the book and continued reading. I read about the Leaky Gut
Syndrome, Candida Related Complex (CRC), Candida albicans, and much more.
I paid special attention to the information about the ingredients of the coloncleansing program.
One of the books sections that caught my attention contained foods and
recipes instrumental in helping to treat the yeast problem. Two recipes that seemed
easy to prepare and sounded good to me were the Chicken Rice Soup and the
Hamburger Cabbage Soup. I tried the Chicken Rice Soup first. It was good. My
psoriasis continued to improve, I started to lose weight, and I felt great. I couldnt
ask for anything more than that. The improvements to my health continued when I
tried the Hamburger Cabbage Soup. They both were added to my list of favorite
foods. This was the success that I needed to see. It continued to occur through
Phase I and Phase II of the program.
By the time I was ready to proceed to Phase III, my psoriasis was much
better. However, I found it difficult to consistently follow through with the Phase
III regimen. Eventually, I stopped using the colon-cleansing program and moved
on with my search for answers. At this point, I knew there were additional answers
for my psoriasis. I just needed to find them.
In the spring of 2002, I noticed that whenever I ate a large helping of
broccoli, my psoriasis appeared to be healing. The redness in some of the affected
areas disappeared for three or four hours. Later, I noticed that eating green beans
produced the same result.

Healing Psoriasis Naturally

Page 6

Then I started to notice other patterns. The psoriasis would flare up after I
had eaten pizza or consumed my favorite snack, potato chips. Eventually, dairy
products, bread, peanuts, and alcoholic beverages were also added to my list of
trigger foods. When I occasionally consumed them, the reaction was very apparent
within a day or two.
In the fall of 2002, I found the book The pH Miracle by Dr. Robert Young.
Finally, I had the answer to what broccoli and green beans had in common. It turns
out that they are both highly-alkalizing vegetables.
Reading Dr. Youngs book completely changed the way that I looked at the
food I ate. I now understood how my diet contributed to the development of my
psoriasis. This new information gave me even more of a reason to change my diet.
Being a modern-day, fast-food-eating American, I was still not ready to give
up most of the foods that I had spent a lifetime learning to enjoy. But, I knew that I
could manage to add more alkalizing vegetables to my diet. I identified four
vegetables that I already liked: broccoli, green beans, cucumber, and spinach. It
then became my goal to increase daily consumption of each of these alkalizing
vegetables as much as possible. This wasnt the perfect approach, but it was the
best that I could consistently commit to at the time.
At this point, the intensity of my search for answers really increased. I now
had visual proof that I could get my psoriasis to improve, possibly even heal. I
focused my attention on my diet because I felt that I finally knew what I needed to
do. For a number of years, I still only focused on increasing consumption of the
alkalizing vegetables. During that time, I was constantly struggling to keep my
diet under control. I blamed the slow progress of getting my psoriasis to heal on
my failure to stay away from my known trigger foods (i.e. potato chips, pizza,
wine, etc.). Meanwhile, I continued to ignore the requirement to reduce the
consumption of saturated fats. It took an angina attack to finally get my attention.
The angina attack occurred on October 31, 2006. I now have two permanent
stents. The angina attack scared the crap out of me. Tests that were conducted
before the stents were implanted revealed partial blockage in three small veins.
The cardiologist could fix only two of the three blockages. The third vein was too
small to have a stent implanted.

Page 7

If I had been clearly thinking at the time, I would have said, fix all of them
or leave all of them alone. The thought what am I going to do about the third
blockage? even occurred to me while I was laying on the operating table, but I
said nothing. To say that I did not bring my A game that day is an
understatement. In the operating room, the doctors have home court advantage.
The patient, as a visitor, does not stand a chance. Besides, they had all their
clothes on while I was near-naked. It is hard to be professional and assertive when
extremely underdressed.
Anyway, I digress. Within three months, saturated fats were no longer part
of my daily diet. With the elimination of saturated fats, my psoriasis continued to
improve at a slightly faster pace.

The Light Goes On (December 2008)

In the fall of 2008, I decided that I wanted to share what I had learned with
other other people who were also living with psoriasis. As part of my effort to
develop content for an ebook, I started to put together notes from the four books
that I had been reading. This process required that I go through each book in
detail. During this review process, a light went on. I realized that one of the
primary keys to getting psoriasis out of my life was the colon-cleansing program.
It was at this time that I thought of using the process of cleaning a fish tank
as an analogy of how I viewed the process needed to get my psoriasis to heal. I
suspect that the seed for this analogy was planted when I read Dr. Youngs book,
The pH Miracle. In Chapter 2 of his book, Dr. Young talks about when the fish
are sick, you change the water, you dont treat the fish.
In my analogy, the pH of the water of the fish tank is too acidic and the
water contains particulates (i.e. old fish food, fish droppings, algae, etc.). The fish
tank includes a water filtration system with a filter cartridge. However, the filter
cartridge needs to be replaced because it no longer filters the water; and, the
container that holds the cartridge leaks because it has holes in it.
The goal is to raise the pH of the water and to remove the particulates from
the water (i.e. clean the water in the fish tank). There are three steps that need to
be taken to safely accomplish this goal.

3)

Page 8

Replace the polluted water with clean water, one gallon at a time. Because
there are fish in the tank, replacing all of the water at one time is not an
option.
Replace the filter cartridge.
Replace the leaky housing that contains the filter cartridge.

In treating my psoriasis, I learned there are also three steps that I needed to
take in order to get my psoriasis to heal.
1) Clean up my diet.
2) Remove toxins from my digestive tract. If there are fewer toxins in my
digestive tract, then there are fewer toxins to leak into my bloodstream.
3) Restore the integrity of my digestive tract. This will keep the toxins from
leaking into my bloodstream.
In my opinion, only changing the diet and not performing the other two steps
is comparable to attempting to clean up the water in the fish tank by replacing the
water one gallon at a time. The goal of cleaning up the water can eventually be
accomplished by doing that, but it will take a much longer time if that is the only
action being taken.

Pulling It All Together

As I stated in my introduction, during my years-long search for a way to
cure my psoriasis, I purchased every book that I thought might contain any
information. However, most books that initially caught my attention did not seem
to be relevant to my psoriasis or have answers that made sense to me.
Eventually, I found the information that I needed in four books. One of
these books was written specifically for psoriasis and the other three were not.
However, psoriasis was mentioned at least once in two of the other books.
Information in each of the four books provided me with one major piece to my
psoriasis puzzle. Putting the pieces from these four books together has allowed me
to solve My Psoriasis Puzzle. In one sense, this information allowed me to
develop a picture of what was happening in my body. In another sense, the
information has enabled me to understand what I needed to do to solve my puzzle
(i.e. to get my psoriasis to heal).

The first book is Healing Psoriasis, The Natural Alternative and was
written by Dr. John Pagano. The first edition of this book was published in 1991.
The first revised edition was published in 2009. The content of this ebook will be
based on quotes from the first revised edition of Dr. Paganos book.
Dr Pagano is a chiropractic physician in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. His
web site is www.psoriasis-healing.com.
Dr. Paganos book is the foundation upon which the other major pieces
would eventually be placed. In his book, Dr. Pagano introduced the terms acid in
the blood, Candida overgrowth, and Leaky Gut into the psoriasis picture. He
also established the idea that integrity of the intestinal tract could be restored and
that psoriasis could be healed, given the right conditions. He defines the right
conditions to be a clean diet as outlined in his book, the consumption of herbal
teas, and the use of colonics.
The second book is The pH Miracle - Balance Your Diet, Reclaim Your
Health and was written by Dr. Robert Young and Shelley Redford Young. The
first edition of this book was published in April 2002. The first revised edition was
published in July 2010. The content of this ebook will be based on quotes from the
first revised edition of Dr. Youngs book.
Dr. Robert Young is a microbiologist and nutritionist. Shelly Redford Young
is a licensed massage therapist and a chef specializing in optimum nutrition. Their
web site is www.phmiracleliving.com.
The pH Miracle created the framework atop Dr. Paganos foundation by
providing all of the information that I needed to know about acid in the blood.
In his book, Dr. Young identified the health issues associated with acid in the
blood and provided a list of foods, recipes, and recipe substitutions that would
help achieve and maintain the optimal pH of the blood. In the first revised edition
of his book, he also provided me with a new definition of the digestion process.
The third book is Conquering Yeast Infections - The Non-drug Solution for
Men and Women and was written by S. Colet Lahoz. The first printing of this
book was published in 1996. The seventh printing of this book Conquering Yeast
Infections - Chronic Illness and the Candida Connection was published in 2009.
The content of this ebook will be based on quotes from the seventh printing of Ms.
Lahozs book.

Ms. Lahoz is a licensed acupuncturist and operates her own holistic clinic,
the East West Clinic in White Bear Lake, Minnesota. The East West Clinics web
site is www.eastwest-mn.com.
Conquering Yeast Infections filled in the body of my psoriasis-healing
structure by providing the weapons that I needed to win my war with psoriasis. It
should be noted that other than changes to my diet, the only weapons I needed are:
1) The intestinal cleaners bentonite and psyllium;
2) The antifungals caprylic acid, olive oil, and garlic; and
3) The probiotic acidophilus.
The fourth book is The Probiotics Revolution and was written by Dr. Gary
Huffnagle with coauthor Sarah Wernick. This book was published in June 2007.
Dr. Huffnagle is a Professor of Internal Medicine (Pulmonary and Critical Care
Medicine) and Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Michigan
Medical School. Sarah Wernick is a freelance writer.
The Probiotics Revolution turned out to be the roof on my building. It
was the final piece of the puzzle and helped to tie together the information found in
the other books by providing information about the relationship between probiotics
and the immune system. For the first time, I was able to read about how the
immune and the digestive systems function and about their relationship to each
another. I also learned about the role that probiotics play with the proper
functioning of the immune system and the prevention and treatment of
inflammation. For the first time, the term autoimmune disease became more
understandable to me.
It is my opinion that these four books are linked together by a number of
issues, that they actually complement each other, and, to a certain degree, each
author is saying the same thing. It was only while I was reviewing my notes that I
started to see these patterns emerge. The common topics that I found in these four
books include:
1) Acid/alkaline balance;
2) Candida albicans (i.e. yeast);
3) Leaky Gut;
4) Overgrowth; and
5) Probiotics;

As I was reading each of the four books, I compiled a list of quotes that I
thought were relevant to the understanding of both the development and the
healing of my psoriasis. All of the selected quotes can be found in Appendix A.
Some of these quotes are included as part of my written text and some are not.
In appendix B, the quotes have been categorized by eighteen specific
subjects that I thought were also relevant to my psoriasis. Some of these subjects
include: Acid/Alkaline Balance, Candida albicans (i.e. yeast), Colon, Diet,
Immune System, Inflammation, Internal Toxins, Leaky Gut, and Yeast.
Appendix C of the ebook identifies some of the other diseases such as
Crohns Disease, Irritable Bowl Syndrome, Psoriatic Arthritis, and Rheumatoid
Arthritis that are mentioned in the books used as sources of information for this
ebook.
Initially, the focus of my ebook was only on psoriasis because I thought it
was the only disease with which I have personal experience. However, as I went
through the process of reviewing my medical history, I realized that was not the
situation. As stated earlier, my medical history included hay fever, high
cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart disease, diverticulosis, and ulceration of the
intestine. Discussions of these health issues are now included as part of this ebook.

What I have Learned

In the following paragraphs, I will outline my understanding of my psoriasis.
This understanding includes what caused it to develop and what I need to do to get
it to heal and to keep it from ever coming back. Included in my discussion are
quotes that I have used as the basis in developing my understanding, questions,
answers, and opinions. When I started this process, I believed there were some
simple answers to my psoriasis. I now believe that I have found them.
For ease of reference, the following abbreviations will be used when
referencing the book that provided the basis of my conclusions:

Looking back over the years, I now have a better understanding of the events
that lead up to the development and the subsequent spreading of my psoriasis. It is
my opinion that any specific event, by itself, is not responsible for the development
of my psoriasis. Rather, it was the combination of the events, over an extended
period of time, that resulted in the development of my psoriasis. It is also my
opinion that a major contributing factor to the development of my psoriasis was the
totally unrestricted (high in foods that contained saturated fat, sugar, and yeast /
low in foods that contained alkalizing vegetables) diet that I followed over the
years leading up to the initial appearance of my psoriasis and continued to follow
until the early nineties. At that time, the spreading stopped and the healing process
began.

My Unrestricted Diet
During the first fifty years of my life, my diet could be described as being
totally unrestricted. If I liked it, I ate it. If I really liked it, I ate more of it. I
considered a salad as the part of the meal you needed to eat so the server would
bring out the real food (i.e. the baked potato and steak). My unrestricted diet also
included the occasional consumption of alcoholic beverages and multiple cups of
black coffee daily.

Alcohol
During the early nineties, I was advised to stop consuming alcoholic
beverages. Prior to that time, the occasional consumption of alcoholic beverages
was part of my life. At that point of my life, alcoholic beverages were not high on
my list of favorite beverages. Because of that, I found it very easy to stop
consuming alcoholic beverages. Looking back, I now find it as no coincidence that
at that point, my psoriasis stopped spreading. It was the first time in my life that
the number of areas affected by psoriasis stabilized. Gradually, the number of
areas affected by psoriasis began to decrease. The process of healing had begun.

Colic
While reading the following quotes in the The Probiotics Revolution, I
was reminded of a conversation that I had with my mother.
TPR pg 97 A newborn emerges into the world without a microflora.

Healing Psoriasis Naturally

Pulling It All Together - April 18, 2011

Page 13

TPR pg 98 Babies born vaginally receive their first exposure to microbes during
delivery. The vaginal tract contains a microflora, including the
probiotic Lactobacillus, which enters the babys mouth and is
swallowed.
TPR pg 98 Breast milk contains several compounds that inhibit disease-causing
bacteria and promote probiotics. A breastfed babys gut microflora
consists mainly of Bacteroides and the probiotic Bifidobacteria. In
contrast, the gut microflora of a formula-fed baby has fewer of these
microbes and a greater array of other microbes, both beneficial and
potentially harmful. While the implications of this difference are not
yet fully clear, most scientific evidence suggests that infants whose
microflora consists mainly of probiotics have lower rates of allergies
and asthma.
TPR pg 100 But what really caught my attention in the Johns Hopkins study was
this: babies who consumed probiotic formula were significantly less
likely to have colic.
TPR pg 102 Those with colic are less frequently colonized by Lactobacillus
bacteria and more likely to host non-probiotic bacteria. A long-term
study by the same group found that colicky infants were more
vulnerable to allergies, including allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis,
asthmatic bronchitis, hay fever, atopic eczema, and food allergies. As
Ill explain in more detail in Chapter 7, all of these conditions have
microflora connections.
My mother described me as a colicky baby (i.e. I cried a lot) during the first
six months of my life. She also said that after my formula was changed, my crying
and fussing stopped. This leads me to believe that something in my formula
triggered the colicky behavior. Because my mother passed in 1999, I will never
know what it was.

Hay Fever
At age six, during a visit to the family farm, I walked through a field in
which the ragweed and russian thistle were taller than me. That night was the
beginning of my life with hay fever (i.e. a seasonally allergy). During the period
from mid-August through the first of October each year, my physical activity was

Healing Psoriasis Naturally

severely limited and I stayed inside in order to avoid the pollen as much as
possible. In the summer of 1962, I moved from Ohio to California. Thirteen years
later, I moved to Alaska. I have not visited Ohio during the hay fever season since
1961.
In California, the seasonal allergies pretty much disappeared. However, they
have reappeared since I moved to Alaska and now occur during the month of May.
The pollen that triggers my seasonal allergies in Alaska appears to be birch and
alder. The symptoms are much less severe than they were in Ohio. For the first
few years in Alaska, I used prescription drugs to minimize the symptoms.
However, during the last couple of years, I have not needed the assistance of
prescription drugs to get me through the season.

Antibiotics
During the first fifteen years of my life, I received a number of penicillin
shots. I can even remember the doctor coming to my home to administer the
penicillin shot. Because the penicillin was administered as a shot and not taken
orally, I do not believe that the penicillin affected the balance of good/ bad bacteria
in my colon. However, during my twenties, I began receiving antibiotics orally
and that is when I believe that the number of Candida albicans in my body began
to grow.
CYI pg 9

A history of repeated use of antibiotics or prednisone or both (even

as early as childhood) is one of the main causes of CRC. This can
happen after prolonged (several months or more) or repeated (more
than three times in 12 months) treatments with antibiotics. When
bacteria are destroyed by antibiotics, the fungi grow. In essence, one
infection is traded for another.

TPR pg 18 Normally, the population of C. albicans in the body is relatively

small. But because this yeast is antibiotic-resistant, it proliferates
when other microbes are destroyed by antibiotics.
Based on my understanding of the effects of antibiotics on the balance of
friendly/unfriendly bacteria in the intestinal tract, it is my belief the antibiotic
treatments during my twenties established the foothold that the Candida albicans
were to eventually have in my body. The effect of the antibiotic treatments over a
number of years, combined with my unrestricted diet, sealed my fate.

Page 15

During the first fifty years of my life, antibiotic treatments were occasionally
prescribed to deal with various conditions. The last time that I can remember
taking antibiotics was during the early nineties. The condition that I was trying to
heal was a chronic ear infection. After two back-to-back antibiotic treatments, I
finally gave up. It was apparent to me that further antibiotic treatments were not
going to completely clear up the infection in my ears. Based on the following
quote, I now understand why the antibiotics were no longer working.
CYI pg 15 Recurrent infections (sinusitis, earaches, urinary tract infections,
vaginal infections, bronchitis, etc.) that do not respond to antibiotics
or prednisone therapy or keep recurring after drug treatment, are
another clue. In fact, in most cases patients get worse with these drug
therapies because the fungal-bacterial ratio is comprised even more.
However, this does not mean that I will never take antibiotics again. Now
that I understand the effect that antibiotics have on the balance of friendly/
unfriendly bacteria in my colon, I also understand what I need to do to restore the
proper balance in my colon after the antibiotic treatment has been completed.
It is my belief that the following sequence of events lead to the development
of my psoriasis:
1) Use of antibiotics allowed the population of Candida albicans in my colon to
start increasing and my unrestricted diet supported this growth until the
condition became overgrown;
2) My unrestricted diet also caused the pH of my blood and my colon to slowly
decrease (i.e. become more acidic) over the years;
3) As the pH of my blood and my colon became more acidic, the condition in
my colon eventually reached the point where the Candida albicans started to
change into fungal yeast;
4) This fungal yeast eventually developed roots that in turn penetrated the walls
of my colon which lead to the leaking of Candida albicans, mycotoxins and
their toxic waste into my blood stream. In an effort to rid itself of these
internal toxins, the body eventually resorted to having to push them out
through my skin (i.e. psoriasis).
Based on the following quotes, it is my understanding that psoriasis
develops when toxic substances leak from the gastrointestinal tract and get into the
bloodstream. To simplify the discussion, I am going to refer to all of these toxic
substances as internal toxins.

Healing Psoriasis Naturally

Pulling It All Together - April 18, 2011

Page 16

It is also my understanding that Candida albicans and mycotoxins leak from

the gastrointestinal tract into the bloodstream and eventually to all parts of the
body. The Candida albicans and mycotoxins produce toxic waste while they are
alive and when they die. It is the bodys attempt to rid itself of this toxic waste that
actually results in the development of psoriasis.
HP pg 2

Psoriasis is the external manifestation of the bodys attempt to

throw off internal toxins.

HP pg 4

For psoriasis to occur, the walls in certain areas of the intestinal tract
must become thin and porous. When this happens, toxic substances
that should normally pass through the intestines and eventually be
eliminated by the body seep through these walls, enter the lymphatic
system, and invade the bloodstream. The bodys natural purification
system, primarily the liver and kidneys, then tries to filter out these
toxins, which build up in the blood.

HP pg 4

When the liver, the major filtering gland of the body, is overloaded,
the skin comes to the rescue and helps to eliminate toxins. When the
kidneys are overtaxed, the lungs come into play.

HP pg 10

When the intestinal walls are already thin and compromised, they are
more susceptible to fungal yeast infections. Yeast that collects in the
folds of the intestinal villi (due to overly acidic pH levels that result
from eating too many yeast-laden foods, especially sugar and white
flour products, or from overuse of antibiotics) can change from
normal, beneficial yeast into fungal yeast. This new fungal yeast
grows roots (rhizoids) that penetrate the gut wall in their search for
nutrition derived from blood, thus opening passageways for the toxic
macromolecules to invade the blood circulatory system. The resulting
pinholes are the source of the term leaky gut.

CYI pg 5

Conversely, Candida Related Complex (CRC) is certainly not easily

treated. It occurs when the living yeast gains entrance to the
bloodstream and the lymphatics. Their mode of entrance is two-fold.
The first is by way of penetration of their root-like tentacles into the
intestinal wall. This penetration destroys the mucous membrane
system of the intestines. Some people call this leaking of toxins into
the bloodstream the leaky gut syndrome.

pHM pg 16 Bacteria, yeast, fungus, and mold do not themselves produce
symptoms in the body -- their toxic wastes do. Nor do they initiate
disease or dis-ease.
pHM pg 18 When your body goes from acid back to base, bacteria, yeast, fungus,
and mold stop developing and can once again become benign. Their
leftover toxins can then be bound up by certain fats and alkaline
minerals and eliminated from the body.

I Find Answers
After developing an understanding of my psoriasis and what caused it to
develop, my goal became to identify what I needed to do to get it to heal. Pursuing
this goal lead me to develop the following four questions and eventually the
answers to these questions. Following each question is my answer and the
corresponding quotes that were used as the basis for my answer.
Question: What is the source of these internal toxins?
Answer: Based on the following quotes, I believe there are two sources of the
internal toxins that are being pushed out through my skin. The first
source is the toxic waste produced by the mycotoxins that have leaked
into the bloodstream. The second source is the toxins that are released
when the mycotoxins die, either due to natural causes or due to
treatment by fungicides and/or probiotics.
pHM pg 16 Bacteria, yeast, fungus, and mold do not themselves produce
symptoms in the body -- their toxic wastes do. Nor do they initiate
disease or dis-ease.
pHM pg 18 When your body goes from acid back to base, bacteria, yeast, fungus,
and mold stop developing and can once again become benign. Their
leftover toxins can then be bound up by certain fats and alkaline

CYI pg 82 Die-Off Reaction - Many patients with CRC, but not all,
experience uncomfortable effects within the first week, often

commencing on the second day following the beginning of treatment.

These effects may include flu-like symptoms (stuffiness, headache,
general achiness, or diarrhea), skin rashes, heavy limbs, vaginal
irritation and/or discharge, unusual numbness in the legs, or possibly
even mental confusion. The exact die-off symptoms are many and
varied. These symptoms result from the release of toxins from rapidly
dying Candida albicans in the colon.
Question: What can I do to eliminate the sources of the internal toxins?
Answer: Based on the following quotes, fungicides such as caprylic acid, oleic
acid (contained in olive oil), grapefruit seed extract, garlic, and
probiotics can be used to kill or neutralize the mycotoxins. However,
for someone like myself who already has psoriasis, that presents the
following problem: killing the mycotoxins actually increases the
amount of internal toxins in the body. If my body is already having
trouble eliminating the existing toxins (i.e. having to push them out
through the skin), the last thing that I want to do is to produce more
internal toxins. I will provide more on this issue when I discuss the
surprises.
CYI pg 77 Caproyl, containing liquid capryllic acid and safflower oils, is the
fungicidal component of the anti-CRC colon cleansing program.
Caprylic acid, a fatty acid, is a broad-spectrum anti-fungal agent
effective against Candida Albicans and other fungi, but harmless to
friendly intestinal flora.
CYI pg 78 The intake of psyllium also reduces toxic overload. This reaction
occurs when poisons are released by dead and dying fungi (referred to
as the die-off reaction) associated with the eradication of CRC. The
toxic overload is a result of the successful killing of the Candida
albicans fungus by the fungicidal Caproyl. The psyllium gel absorbs
these toxins from the colon and carries them out of the system.
Question: What can I do to help my body get rid of the internal toxins without
having to push them out through my skin?
Answer: I have learned that adding fiber to my diet is one of the most effective
approaches available for helping the body to get rid of these internal

toxins through the gastrointestinal tract. Fiber is found in certain foods

and supplements. In my case, I have used broccoli and long grain
brown rice as two of my food sources of fiber. As far as supplements
are concerned, I have been using bentonite and psyllium as additional
sources of fiber.
HP pg 61

Fiber-rich foods have a cleansing effect throughout the colon because

of their inability to be digested. Fibrous-type foods (roughage) speed
up the process of waste elimination, and the destructive, possibly even
cancerous, elements do not have time to gain a foothold in the large
intestine before they are scraped off the walls of the colon and passed
out of the body.

CYI pg 45 Psyllium is an intestinal cleanser. Bentonite absorbs the harmful

toxins produced by fungi, bacteria, and worms and flushes them out of
the body. The combination of these two products are a great aid in
eliminating toxins from the intestinal tract.
CYI pg 76 A gentle, natural method of eliminating colon toxicity can be
accomplished by using two natural agents: psyllium and bentonite.
Neither one is absorbed into the system, but rather each absorbs (it
acts like a magnet) and then expels toxic materials in the feces.
CYI pg 77 Psyllium powder is an intestinal cleanser which works to clean the
debris from the colon where the fungi breed. Bentonite is a detoxifier.
It removes the toxic waste (CRCs poisonous by-product) from the
body.
CYI pg 77 Psyllium is a plant grown commercially in India and its husk is used
as a bulk-forming laxative in numerous products. These husks expand
when mixed with liquid, creating a roughage-like gelled substance.
The expanding bulk cleans out the pockets lining the colon wall.

CYI pg 79 Bentonite is the third part of the colon cleansing program developed
to eliminate CRC from the body. Bentonite, a volcanic ash found in
the Black Hills of South Dakota, is an inert mineral silicate. When
processed into a very fine powder and suspended in distilled water,
bentonite absorbs (acts like a magnet pulling toxins to it) intestinal
waste products without being absorbed into the system. It just passes
through the intestinal tract attaching the toxins to itself.
CYI pg 79 Because bentonite itself is not absorbed into the body, whatever it
absorbs is removed in the feces. Bentonite provides an excellent
vehicle for removing miscellaneous intestinal poisons and toxins
generated by Candida albicans.
Question: What can I do to stop the leaking of toxic substances from the
gastrointestinal tract (in other words, how can I restore the integrity to
the gastrointestinal tract)?
Answer: The really good news about fiber is that it is also part of the
recommended treatment that helps to restore the integrity to the
gastrointestinal tract. The other part of the treatment is the use of
antifungals and probiotics.
HP pg 10

Remove the fungal yeast buildup and the gut will heal, preventing
further leakage into the blood. This is best done by avoiding the foods
that basically caused the problem -- too many carbohydrates and
sugars -- and instead consume foods that help correct the problem -olive oil and garlic, as well as plain, organic yogurt with live cultures
-- and the chances of recovery are greatly enhanced.

CYI pg 45 Bentonite is said to absorb up to 180 times its own weight in

bacteria, toxic debris, and even parasites . . . Psyllium acts like a
broom to help eliminate stagnant waste in the gut.
pHM pg 68 Vegetables are loaded with the fiber that is crucial to your diet.
Besides the accepted benefits of fiber in reducing cancer and other
serious health concerns, studies have shown that fiber markedly
decreases mycotoxicity. Fiber acts like a sponge, soaking up acids
from the body. It also works like a broom, cleaning out the
intestines.

TPR pg 81 First, probiotics promote a healthy gut -- one that isnt damaged.
They do this by producing antimicrobial compounds that destroy
harmful microbes. And they also crowd out the undesirables by
competing with them for nutrients. Second, probiotics can actually
send all is well chemical messages to the dendritic cells.
I find that the following two quotes best illustrate the connection that I see
between the books Healing Psoriasis, the Natural Alternative and Conquering
Yeast Infections.
HP pg 6

The gut becomes leaky in the sense that bacteria, fungi, parasites,
and their toxins, undigested protein, fat and waste, normally not
absorbed into the bloodstream in the healthy state, pass through a
damaged, hyperpermeable, porous or leaky gut.

CYI pg 45 Psyllium is an intestinal cleanser. Bentonite absorbs the harmful

toxins produced by fungi, bacteria, and worms and flushes them out of
the body. The combination of these two products are a great aid in
eliminating toxins from the intestinal tract.
It is important to note that all of these treatments must be accompanied by a
clean diet. Depending on which book I read, each author has a slightly different
approach as far as a recommended diet is concerned. However, there are some
basic themes that they all have in common: minimize consumption of saturated
fats, avoid foods that contain refined sugar, and avoid foods that contain yeast.

When More is not Better

While I have been searching for what was needed to get my psoriasis to heal,
I unfortunately did not understand how all of this worked together. When I
initially discovered the effect that garlic had on my psoriasis, I was thrilled. Then,
I applied the basic principal more is better. However, I soon realized that in this
case, more was definitely not better. As I started to increase the amount of garlic
that I was consuming, I noticed that rashes were starting to appear in areas that had
never been affected by my psoriasis. Even though the new areas were red and
scaly, they never appeared exactly the same as the areas affected by my psoriasis.
Fortunately, since I have started using only the intestinal cleaners bentonite and
psyllium, these new areas have healed.

While I was trying to sort out all of the issues regarding my psoriasis, the
thought occurred to me that if I took just the intestinal cleaners, bentonite and
psyllium, the amount of internal toxins that pass out of my body through the
gastrointestinal tract would be increased. This would effectively decrease the
amount of toxic waste that was available to leak into the bloodstream. In addition,
the intestinal cleaners also serve as part of the colon healing process. When I put
together the following five quotes, taking just the intestinal cleaners by themselves
really made a lot of sense.
HP pg 4

For psoriasis to occur, the walls in certain areas of the intestinal tract
must become thin and porous. When this happens, toxic substances
that should normally pass through the intestines and eventually be
eliminated by the body seep through these walls, enter the lymphatic
system, and invade the bloodstream.

HP pg 271 The alleviation, control, healing, and regeneration of the surface cells
(your skin) depend on two factors, primarily: (1) ensuring adequate
drainage of toxins through the normal channels of elimination, namely
your bowls and kidneys, and (2) not polluting the body further by
ingesting elements destructive to the gut wall, achieved by following a
carefully selective diet.

The Surprises
While searching for answers to my psoriasis, I found a number of issues that
really surprised me. First of all, I never expected the intestinal cleaners, bentonite
and psyllium, to play such an important role in getting my psoriasis to heal. What I
like most about bentonite and psyllium is that neither one is absorbed into my
body. They simply pass through the gastrointestinal tract facilitating the removal
of toxins and toxic waste. It makes a lot of sense to me to remove these toxins and
toxic waste from the colon before they can leak into the blood stream.
The second issue that surprised me was the release of toxins by dying
mycotoxins. Understanding that part of the process answered a lot of my
questions. Even when I maintained my diet, I would experience occasional itching
and/or new outbreaks would appear. What I did not understand at the time was that
these reactions were being caused by the use of antifungals and probiotics. Had I
understood all of this when I first started using the colon-cleansing program, I
would have initially used only the intestinal cleaners bentonite and psyllium.
Eventually, I would have then initiated use of the antifungals and probiotics. I
consider this to be one of those if I knew then what I know now moments.
The third surprise was the importance of probiotics. When I read that
probiotics could help to reduce inflammation, help control the unfriendly bacteria
in the colon, and help to repair the intestinal wall, it was like hitting the medical
trifecta. However, the benefits of probiotics have now been called into question by
at least one author.
Prior to July, 2010, the authors of the four books referenced in this ebook
were in agreement about the benefits of probiotics. However, in the first revised
edition of his book The pH Miracle - Balance Your Diet, Reclaim Your Health,
Dr. Robert Young, as indicated in the following quotes, changed his position on the
benefits of probiotics.
pHM pg 54 Youve probably run across recommendations for digestive enzymes
and/or probiotics to improve the health of your digestive tract. In fact,
I used to recommend them myself. But through live and dried blood
analysis, my understanding has evolved, and now I want to emphasize
the negative consequences of these supplements, and warn you to
steer clear of them on your path to an alkaline lifestyle.

Pulling It All Together - April 18, 2011

Page 24

pHM pg 55 Enzymes and probiotics are a bit more complicated, because they
may seemingly be beneficial in the short term. Thats because they do
help break down undigested matter from meat and dairy, and so can
provide temporary relief from constipation. Think of it this way: Yes,
they help to break down hard-to-digest animal protein and meat. But
guess what. You are meat! It will break you down, too.
pHM pg 55 Enzymes and probiotics have many harmful effects over the long
run. They are acidifying to the body, for one thing, and can damage
healthy cells and tissues, including the delicate intestinal villi.
pHM pg 55 Probiotics are transformations of what used to be healthy cells. There
is no such thing as friendly or healthy bacteria. The presence of
bacteria is evidence of an acidic environment. Ideally, the small and
large intestines will be clean and free of all microforms. You dont
want to be adding any in there!
To the best of my knowledge, Dr. Young is the only author that has taken a
position of not recommending the use of probiotics.
Lately, everyone has been promoting the benefits of probiotics. The weight
control food that I feed my cat contains prebiotics.
Some authors even state that you cannot take too many probiotics. I believe
in moderation, so when I read a statement like that, it causes me to pause.
Bottom line, I really dont know which position is correct. I grew up in the
fifties when antibiotics were being promoted as the answer to the war on disease.
In the sixties, my family physician talked with me about the potential problems
associated with overuse of antibiotics. Today, it appears that use of antibiotics
probably contributed to some of my current health issues.
All of this leads me to the following question: Are they getting it right this
time or in ten or twenty years will we be learning about the downside of
probiotics?
For now, I will continue to consume the probiotic supplements that I have
purchased. However, I do not plan to purchase any more probiotic supplements in
the near future. I will continue to consume foods that contain live cultures such as

Healing Psoriasis Naturally

Pulling It All Together - April 18, 2011

yogurt and naturally fermented foods. I will also continue to watch for additional
information regarding probiotics.
Another surprise was the issue of leaky gut. When I started my search for
answers, my goal was to get my psoriasis to heal. Somewhere along the way, my
goal has turned from getting my psoriasis to heal to restoring the integrity of my
intestinal wall and eliminating the leaky gut condition.
Looking back, it is easy to see why I missed the major role that leaky gut
plays in the development of my psoriasis. Psoriasis is highly visible, leaky gut is
invisible. I see the psoriasis every day. The leaky gut condition is hidden deep
inside of me. I can only read about it and picture it in my mind.
When I consider that the following quote appears in Chapter 1 of Healing
Psoriasis, the Natural Alternative, it is even more puzzling that I have missed it
for all of these years.

I now consider psoriasis to be the symptom and leaky gut as the condition
that needs to be resolved.
Having said all of this, it appears that I now have a new problem to solve.
How do I tell when the leaky gut condition is completely healed? Even after my
symptoms (psoriasis) have disappeared, there is no guarantee that the leaky gut
condition has been healed. If the leaky gut condition still exists, it is still possible
that the psoriasis might reappear.
Up to this point, I have measured my progress by visually observing the
overall condition of my psoriasis. However, I have recently realized that I do have
ways to evaluate the internal changes that have occurred as a result of what I have
been doing over the past few years.

Healing Psoriasis Naturally

Pulling It All Together - April 18, 2011

Page 26

In 2002, I had a live blood analysis performed. As part of that procedure, I

received pictures of my live blood. Sometime in the next few months, I plan to
have another live blood analysis performed. With the second set of pictures of my
live blood, I will be able to determine if any visible changes have occurred in my
blood over the past eight years.
In 2004, I had a colonoscopy. As part of the procedure, I received set of
pictures of the inside of my colon and the diagnosis of diverticulosis and ulceration
of the intestine. I am now planning to have a second colonoscopy performed
sometime in the next few months. With the second set of pictures of the inside of
my colon, I will be able to determine if any visible changes have occurred inside
my colon during the last six years.
The results of these before and after procedures should give me an idea of
what internal changes, if any, have taken place over the past few years. With the
information from the before and after procedures, I expect to have tangible
evidence of what changes have taken place inside my body over the past six to
eight years. My expectation is that this information will provide me with evidence
of the internal progress that has occurred. Also, I believe that both of these
procedures can be used to measure my progress long after my psoriasis has
completely healed.
The one thing that I can do to prevent the psoriasis from ever coming back is
to make sure that I do not return to my old eating habits. At this point in my life, I
feel very comfortable in saying that I will never go back to my old eating habits.

Looking Back
When I was initially confronted with the idea that I was going to have to
radically change my diet, I was not happy. Basically, I was unwilling to give up all
of the tastes and foods that I had learned to enjoy over the years. Eventually I
found a way to get started. Rather than focusing on what I needed to give up, I
focused on the foods that I needed to eat in order to get my psoriasis to heal.
Even after I started to make changes to my diet, I found it difficult to
completely give up the burgers, fries, deep-fried foods, steaks, sodas, and other
foods that I was used to eating and drinking on a regular basis. I found myself
getting angry because I was being required to make these lifestyle changes. I kept
thinking why me?, what did I do?.

Page 27

Looking back over the years, I now have a better understanding of what was
going on in my mind. I felt as though I was entitled to eat anything that I
wanted. I thought that I controlled the rules of engagement as far as when it
came to deciding what I could eat.
I now know that is not the case. The rules of engagement, when it comes
to my diet, are dictated by my body. The reason a person eats is to provide
nutrition the body requires in order to function properly. Somewhere along the
way, I forgot that basic principal. If a person does not provide their body with the
proper nutrition it requires, there are consequences. Initially, the consequences are
barely noticeable. Sometimes they can become huge, even life-threatening.
I still dont like diets. That is why I continue to focus my efforts on
identifying and consuming the foods that will help my psoriasis to heal.
Meanwhile, in the back of my mind, I am constantly aware of those foods that
cause my psoriasis to get worse.
As far as those favorite foods, I still occasionally enjoy some of them.
However, the portions are much smaller, the frequency is very low, and I really
appreciate the occasional opportunity to consume them. I no longer take the eating
of my favorites for granted, but view it as an occasional treat.
When I do have the occasional piece of pizza, a salad is always part of the
meal and in most cases, the soda is gone. Beer is definitely no longer part of the
meal. When I enjoy my favorite steak, the portion is smaller, alkalizing vegetables
and a salad makeup the rest of the meal; and, the baked potato with sour cream or
any other carbohydrates are no longer part of the meal.
I should also mention that my tastes are changing. The desire to indulge in
some of my favorite foods is just not there any more. Some of my favorites no
longer taste as good as they used to. They are slowly being replaced by the
healthier choices.
As part of my learning experience, I have become aware of the importance
of food combining. The following quotes are part of the discussion that I have
read regarding the issue of food combining.

Healing Psoriasis Naturally

Pulling It All Together - April 18, 2011

Page 28

CYI pg 66 When eating more than one type of food at a time, the body
stimulates both acid and alkaline enzymes. Protein digestion, for
example, needs a highly acid medium for digestion, whereas
carbohydrates and starches require an alkaline medium. If both of
these types of foods are ingested at the same meal, the two enzymes
interfere with each other and thus with the digestive process. This
interference causes food to move along the digestive tract undigested,
wasting valuable vitamins and minerals.
CYI pg 66 The following are some food combining tips. Avoid eating
carbohydrates with fruits, proteins with carbohydrates, two proteins at
the same meal, fats with protein, and fruits with proteins with
starches. Consume one starch per meal, fruit only with lettuce and
celery, salads with proteins or starches, and melons alone.
CYI pg 66 Learning and using proper food combining techniques will maximize
the amount of nutritional vitamins and minerals absorbed (necessary
in the fight against CRC) as well as alleviate indigestion and intestinal
problems. A book by Dennis Nelson, Food Combining Simplified, is a
recommended source of information on food combining.
Writing my story has been a learning experience for me. Everything I have
learned can be summed up in one word: balance. I now know that good health is
all about balance and specifically the balance of two issues:
1) The proper balance of the blood's pH; and
2) The proper balance of friendly to unfriendly bacteria in the gastrointestinal
tract.
Any future changes in diet or activities relating to my health will support both of
these issues.
Only now do I really understand the importance of having a healthy colon.
The fact that I saw improvements to my psoriasis after first using the coloncleansing program for a few days tells me that, for me, use of the colon-cleansing
program may have been initially more important than changing my diet. However,
as in the goal of cleaning the water in the fish tank, the optimal approach to getting
my psoriasis to heal is to take all three steps:
1) Clean up my diet;
2) Remove toxins from my digestive tract; and
3) Restore the integrity of my digestive tract.

Page 29

When I first used the colon-cleansing program approximately eight years

ago, I did not understand how it fit into the overall picture of getting my psoriasis
to heal or how vital it was to my overall health. In December, 2008, I finally
grasped its importance and decided to start with Phase I of the colon-cleansing
program again. Since that time, my psoriasis has steadily improved to the point
that flaking eventually stopped. Slowly, the remaining affected areas continued to
heal.
However, in December, 2009, another piece of my psoriasis puzzle fell into
place. This piece was the important role that the intestinal cleaners, bentonite and
psyllium, played in getting my psoriasis to heal.
Learning about the candida overgrowth condition that developed in my
colon brought a new focus to my approach in achieving optimal health for myself.
To illustrate my point, I would like to use the following analogy.
A few years ago, I was living in an apartment on the beach in Southern
California. I had been living in the apartment for about five months when I
realized that I was sharing the apartment with some uninvited guests. When I
came home at night and turned on the lights, I noticed that some of the spots on the
floor moved. Yes, you guessed it. I was sharing the apartment with cockroaches.
Since they were not in any way contributing to payment of the rent, they had to go.
The owner of the apartment was notified and the apartment was fumigated. End of
story... Well, not exactly.
About one month later, I was cleaning up outside of the building. Sitting on
the sidewalk was a five gallon metal paint can. This paint can had been sitting on
the sidewalk since I first moved into the apartment over five months earlier. I had
walked past this paint can every day and had never really given it a second
thought. Apparently, the outside of the building had been painted before I moved
in.
When I picked up the can to move it out of the way, I was stunned by what I
saw. For those of you who are not familiar with the old style five gallon metal
paint can, the bottom of the can is recessed so that it does not make contact with
whatever surface the can is sitting on. This leaves a vacant area the size of the
paint can and approximately two inches deep.

Occupying that area was a nest of cockroaches. This nest contained

cockroaches of every size. The smallest appeared to have just hatched or whatever
cockroaches do. The largest appeared to be full size cockroaches ready to leave the
nest. Needless to say, I immediately destroyed the nest.
Reflecting back on that sequence of events, I realize that I saved the owner
the expense of having to repeatedly fumigate the building until someone
discovered this nest and properly destroyed it.
I now understand how important having a healthy colon is in the healing of
my psoriasis. It is my belief that the overgrowth the overgrowth of Candida
albicans and mycotoxins in my colon and the resulting accumulation of internal
toxins in my colon, and the leaky gut condition that developed over the years, are
the internal causes of my psoriasis.
I am also beginning to believe that they may be the internal causes of some
of my other health issues (i.e. high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and
allergies). I see that the requirement of continuing to treat my other health issues is
similar to the requirement of fumigating the apartment building. Until the source
of the problem is eliminated, the requirement to treat the symptom(s) will remain.
My health priorities have also changed. My primary goal is no longer to get
my psoriasis to heal. My primary goal is to restore the health of my colon by
continuing to focus on maintaining a healthy diet and to use the intestinal cleaners
and the antifungals on a daily basis. I believe that if I do that, my psoriasis will
take care of itself and other aspects of my health will benefit as well.

My Other Health Issues

Even though the primary purpose of my search for answers and subsequent
treatment was to get my psoriasis to heal, other aspects of my health have
improved.
My weight is now below what it was approximately twenty years ago. The
following quotes lead me to believe why this has happened:
pHM pg 31 You can thank an overly acid internal environment for the excess
pounds you are carrying around. In a defensive maneuver, the body
creates fat cells to carry acids away from your vital organs to try to

Page 31

protect them. In one sense, your fat is saving your life! But thats why
your body doesnt want to let it go. When you eat and drink to make
your body more basic, your body wont need to keep that fat around
anymore.
pHM pg 31 Weight problems can also result from bacteria, yeast, mold, and
fungus interfering with the alkalizing or digestion of food. The
nutritional deficiencies created can actually trigger your body to pack
on extra pounds, in part because you are always hungry.
pHM pg 72 If you dont get enough water, youll get fat. Simple as that. For one
thing, even mild dehydration slows metabolism by as much as 3
percent. For another, we are so poorly attuned to our bodies thirst
signals that we interpret them as hunger pangs. That is: If we dont
drink enough, we eat too much. Third, if we dont get enough water,
our bodies will actually retain water, and well feel bloated and
uncomfortable -- and look even fatter than strictly necessary! An
acidic body pulls water into the tissues to try to neutralize the acids
there.
Another health issue that has improved is my cholesterol levels. For the first
time in over twenty-five years, they are now well under control.
Prior to October, 2006, I had managed to avoid the taking of prescription
drugs for cholesterol, even though my cholesterol levels had been high for over
twenty years. On October 31, 2006, my past finally caught up with me. Early in
the morning, I experienced pressure on my chest along with very high blood
pressure and a very high heart rate. Initial testing at the emergency room indicated
that I had suffered no damage to the heart, but had just experienced an Angina
attack. Further tests revealed that three small veins in my heart area were partially
blocked. The cardiologist recommended that stents be placed in two of the veins.
Nothing could be done for the third vein as it was too small. After the two stents
were implanted, I was put on daily dose of 20 mg of Lipitor. With a total
cholesterol of 235 and an LDL (bad cholesterol) level of 166, I could no longer
avoid the obvious. What I had been doing was not working.

Pulling It All Together - April 18, 2011

Page 32

During one of my conversations with the cardiologist, he stated that he

wanted to see my LDL level to be in the 70s. At that point, the one thing that we
both probably agreed upon was there was no chance of this ever happening. Eight
months later, I was shocked to find that my total cholesterol had dropped to 136
and my LDL level had dropped to 71. I immediately started thinking about
reducing the amount of Lipitor I was taking on a daily basis. To make a long story
short, over the next three years, the daily amount of Lipitor has been gradually
reduced from 20 mg. In December 2010, I stopped taking Lipitor.
During the past three years, my LDL level has remained between a low of 38
and a high of 96. My total cholesterol has been flagged, on three occasions, as
being too low (less than 125).
For a long time, I have suspected that the drop in my cholesterol had
something to do with the changes in my diet and my exercise program. While
reading the updated and revised version of The pH Miracle, I found the
following quote that confirmed my suspicions.
pHM pg 40

Your cholesterol level, and your risk for heart attack or stroke,
rises as your acid level increases. Reduce your acid level by
reducing acid foods in your diet, and exercising daily, and youll
reduce the cholesterol -- your body wont need to protect itself
against acids by producing it -- along with your risks.

An issue that I was not previously aware of is the significance of having the
HDL (good cholesterol) level above 60. Having the HDL level above 60 is
considered protective from cardiovascular disease. During the past three years, the
level of my good cholesterol has been above 60 six times. It has remained above
60 since the beginning of 2010.
My goal is to maintain the HDL level above 60 and the LDL level below 80.
Based on the events of the last three years, I believe this goal is achievable.
Until December 2010, I was unaware that my health issues included
diverticulosis and ulceration of the intestine. For some unknown reason, this
diagnosis was either not discussed with me after the colonoscopy was performed
or, if it was, the conversation took place without any sense of urgency.

Page 33

In 2004, I was still looking for books that contained information that would
help me to get my psoriasis to heal and had yet to start analyzing the books that I
already had. Therefore, I had no idea that problems in the colon could be linked to
the development of my psoriasis.
For now, I have yet to read very much about diverticulosis and ulceration of
the intestine; and, I have not had the chance to discuss the situation with the doctor
who performed the colonoscopy and have had a chance to learn more about
diverticulosis.
The follow-up colonoscopy is scheduled in June. I will be updating this
section of the ebook after I have been able to discuss the results with the doctor.

Other Factors
When discussing psoriasis, the topics of stress and trigger foods are usually
identified as contributing factors. The following are my thoughts on these two
factors.
Based on the following quotes, I believe that stress can contribute to the
development of psoriasis.
pHM pg 240 Emotions can cause even more acid than food and drink. Powerful
negative emotions come from all sorts of places and in all shapes
and forms. They can include thoughts, feelings, experiences,
conscious and unconscious memories, and dreams. Any of the many
and various problems in living can cause emotional trauma. They all
come under the umbrella of stress. And stress causes significant
amounts of acid to be dumped into your body.
CYI pg 11

Stress and exhaustion can predispose one to CRC by placing an

enormous burden on the immune system. Stress of illness or
overwork and/or trauma from the loss of a loved one or a job is often
a causative agent of CRC.

Healing Psoriasis Naturally

TPR pg 94

Page 34

Stress has the potential to tip our microfloral balance away from
probiotics -- which also affects the balance of regulatory versus
helper T cells. As a result, the immune system will regulate itself
less effectively, leading to increased inflammation in the body.
Scientists already know that some stress hormones can affect the
immune system directly.

However, I also believe that the food one eats, while under stress, can be a
contributing factor to psoriasis. Consider the following questions:
While under stress, do I:
a) Drink more beverages that contain caffeine;
b) Drink more beverages that contain sugar;
c) Drink more beverages that contain alcohol;
d) Eat more comfort foods like chips and salsa; or
e) Eat more alkalizing salads and green vegetables.
Recently, I experienced a two week period of intense stress following an
unexpected death in my immediate family. That two week period occurred just
after I had posted the first version of my ebook in July 2009.
Because I had just finished writing my ebook, my attention was clearly
focused on maintaining a clean diet. During that time period, I made a special
effort to consume mostly foods that were alkalizing (i.e. salads and green
vegetables). Since I was eating in restaurants, I had limited ability to control what
I was eating on a daily basis.
However, I am happy to say that at the end of the two weeks, I had
experienced no flare-ups and that my psoriasis appeared to be the same as it was
two or three weeks earlier. My conclusion from this is that for me, during this
difficult and stressful period of my life, what I ate was a bigger factor than were
the physical factors associated with stress.
My definition of a trigger food is a food that causes a flare-up of the
psoriasis within a couple of hours or days after the trigger food is consumed.
Later, I will discuss what I call contributing foods that also have a much less
noticeable effect on my psoriasis, but that needed to be eliminated in order to help
get my psoriasis to completely heal.

Healing Psoriasis Naturally

Pulling It All Together - April 18, 2011

Page 35

My list of trigger foods includes: pizza, potato chips, peanuts, and foods that
contain yeast and sugar.
The best example of a trigger food for me is pizza. Based on my
understanding of psoriasis, there are at least three reasons that consumption of
pizza causes my psoriasis to flare-up. First, there is the yeast that is contained in
the pizza dough. Second, there is the cheese that is a dairy product and contains
saturated fat. Third, there is the sauce that may include tomatoes (a nightshade).
The last major flare-up that I experienced took place after I had consumed
one of my favorite pizzas. My first meal after I purchased the pizza consisted of
three pieces of pizza and a soda. The next day, I had a similar meal. Two days
later, I remember thinking: well, that is the last time I will do that. At that point,
my psoriasis was worse that it had been for the past number of months. Since that
time, I have never eaten a meal consisting only of pizza and, gradually, my
consumption of soft drinks has, for the most part, been eliminated.
Because I initially decided not to eliminate all of the suspect foods, the
process that I followed was basically trial and error. Whenever a flare-up occurred,
I would note what I had eaten. Later, I would eat the food again, just to confirm
my suspicion. If my suspicion was confirmed, I would include the food in my list
of foods not to eat. Eventually, I started using the list contained in Dr. Paganos
book as a guideline.
As I noted earlier, I have classified some foods that have contributed to my
psoriasis, but yet have contributed in a way that did not result in any flare-up. My
best examples of contributing foods are dairy and tomatoes. I actually discovered
the effect of consuming foods that contained dairy products by accident. Up until a
few years ago, dairy products were a daily part of my life. Prior to the early
nineties, I drank whole milk and consumed lots of cheese and butter. I do not think
there was a cheese made that I would not eat. Eventually, I was convinced to start
drinking 2% milk, but my love for cheese and use of butter remained unchanged.
One day, quite by accident, I completely ran out of dairy products. Because
of activities at work, I failed to stop at the grocery store to replenish my supply of
dairy products for a couple of days. Much to my surprise, I began to notice an
improvement in my psoriasis. Then it dawned on me, I was completely off dairy
products for the first time in my life. The difference was amazing. During the

Healing Psoriasis Naturally

Pulling It All Together - April 18, 2011

Page 36

nutrition classes, I was given a second reason for limiting and/or eliminating foods
that contain dairy products, the saturated fats that most of them contain.
The second food that I discovered to be a contributing factor was tomatoes.
I know that tomatoes are a nightshade and as such should be avoided. However,
sometimes my mind can play games with me. Recently, I developed a salsa habit.
I also know that tomatoes are a major part of salsa, but somehow, I convinced
myself that consuming salsa would be OK.
At the time, my psoriasis had been healing, but the process had reached what
I considered to be a plateau. I just was not making any progress. Obviously, I was
missing something. The salsa that I was consuming on a daily basis immediately
became my number one suspect. Again, after a couple of days without the salsa,
the improvement was highly visible.
Learning how to identify contributing foods was one of the many lessons
that I had to learn while attempting to get my psoriasis to heal. Leaning this lesson
was necessary because I chose not to eliminate all of the foods to avoid that had
been identified by Dr. Pagano. Again, this was probably not the most efficient and
timely way to get my psoriasis to heal, but it was the way that I was willing to go
in order to get past hurdle of giving up all of the foods that I loved to eat.
It has been my goal, as an author, to provide enough detail information from
my reference books to assist the reader in choosing which book to read. My intent
is to provide an information guide for patients struggling with psoriasis who are
looking for a way to get their psoriasis to heal.
As a side note, getting access to these books does not necessarily mean
having to purchase them. A lot of the writing and editing of this document has
been accomplished in the work area of my local municipal library. During one of
my trips to the library, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that two of the four
books were already part of the librarys inventory of books. I have submitted the
names of the other two books through the librarys suggest a purchase program
and the third book is now available. My expectation is that eventually the fourth
book will also be available.
The value of everything that I read in these books is based on my current
situation and life experiences. The current situation and life experiences of each
reader is going to be different. Therefore, how each reader views the information

Healing Psoriasis Naturally

Pulling It All Together - April 18, 2011

Page 37

in these books and their evaluation of the information in these books will be
different. I believe that everyones situation is unique. However, I do believe that
we all share one common goal: to get psoriasis out of our lives.
It has taken me a long time to learn what I needed to do to get my psoriasis
to heal. It is my hope that the information contained in this ebook will encourage
the reader to search for ways to get their psoriasis to heal and will save them time
in their search for answers.
For a long time I have thought that once my psoriasis healed, that would be
it. I would be done with psoriasis and I could move on with my life. A couple of
years ago, I questioned what my life would be like without psoriasis. Up to that
point, I had never allowed myself to think about life without psoriasis. Partially
because I was not really sure that I would ever be successful in getting it to
completely heal.
Preparing this document has actually become therapeutic for me. The
physical healing is well under way and almost complete. Now, I can start to work
on the emotional part of the healing process. I have lost way too much of my life
to psoriasis - time that could have and should have been spent enjoying life with
family and friends. That time can never be recovered. My job now is to get past
the loss so that I can get on with the rest of my life.

What is Next
As I write, I still do not know what it is like to not have psoriasis in my life.
For the past number of months, while I have been writing my story, psoriasis has
been even a bigger part of my daily life than it had been during the previous forty
years.
For now, I will continue to update this ebook as I develop a better
understanding of the information that I have and of the additional information that
I find in the future.

The following are direct quotes from Healing Psoriasis, the Natural
Alternative. Two editions of this book have been published. The first edition
(ISBN 0-9628847-0-7) was published in 1991. The first revised edition (ISBN
978-0-470-26726-4) was published in 2009.
Page numbers that are appear next to the quote ( i.e. pg 2 ) indicate the page
on which the quote can be found in the first revised edition.
pg 2 Psoriasis is the external manifestation of the bodys attempt to throw
off internal toxins. In other words, to put it more succinctly, the skin is
doing what the bowels and the kidneys should be doing.
pg 4 For psoriasis to occur, the walls in certain areas of the intestinal tract must
become thin and porous. When this happens, toxic substances that should
normally pass through the intestines and eventually be eliminated by the
body seep through these walls, enter the lymphatic system, and invade the
bloodstream. The bodys natural purification system, primarily the liver
and kidneys, then tries to filter out these toxins, which build up in the
blood.
pg 4 When the liver, the major filtering gland of the body, is overloaded, the
skin comes to the rescue and helps to eliminate toxins. When the kidneys
are overtaxed, the lungs come into play.
pg 5 This is called intestinal permeability, commonly referred to as the leaky
gut syndrome.
pg 6 The Leaky Gut Syndrome is the name given to a very common health
disorder in which the basic organic defect (lesion) is an intestinal lining
which is more permeable (porous) than normal.
pg 6 The gut becomes leaky in the sense that bacteria, fungi, parasites and their
toxins, undigested protein, fat and waste, normally not absorbed into the
bloodstream in the healthy state, pass through a damaged, hyperpermeable,
porous, or leaky gut.

Book Quotes - April 18, 2011

Page A-3

pg 7 The good news is that the repair and regeneration of these walls is well
within the reach of the average person, for the inner lumen (wall) that
forms the barrier that prevents undesirable elements from seeping through
is normally renewed and regenerated every six days -- provided, of course,
that consumption of irritants is halted and other beneficial substances are
introduced.
pg 9 The acid content of the blood must be reduced. This is the basis for the
therapeutic regimen outlined in the subsequent chapters of this book.
pg 10 When the intestinal walls are already thin and compromised, they are
more susceptible to fungal yeast infections. Yeast that collects in the folds
of the intestinal villi (due to overly acidic pH levels that result from eating
too many yeast-laden foods, especially sugar and white flour products, or
from overuse of antibiotics) can change from normal, beneficial yeast into
fungal yeast. This new fungal yeast grows roots (rhizoids) that penetrate
the gut wall in their search for nutrition derived from blood, thus opening
passageways for the toxic macromolecules to invade the blood circulatory
system. The resulting pinholes are the source of the term leaky gut.
pg 10 Remove the fungal yeast buildup and the gut will heal, preventing further
leakage into the blood. This is best done by avoiding the foods that
basically caused the problem -- too many carbohydrates and sugars -- and
instead consume foods that help correct the problem -- olive oil and garlic,
as well as plain, organic yogurt with live cultures -- and the chances of
recovery are greatly enhanced.
pg 17 Even a minimum of insight and understanding usually instills a desire to
approach the prescribed regimen with discipline as well as enthusiasm.
Having a physician tell a patient what to do is one thing, but making that
patient actually understand the reasoning behind it is even more important.
The patient will do what he is supposed to do and will know why he is
doing it.
pg 18 Normally, the skin regenerates itself about once a month, or
approximately every twenty-eight days. In psoriasis, this process is
speeded up; the skin attempts to renew itself every three or four days.

Book Quotes - April 18, 2011

Page A-4

pg 21 Why psoriasis shows itself here, there, or everywhere is really immaterial

when it comes to healing the disease.
pg 26 A psoriatic condition is the first sign that a patient is not in a healthy
state.
pg 32 There is a simple, twofold premise on which this alternative approach to
healing psoriasis is based:
1. Clearing out the poisons that have accumulated in the body.
2. Prevent further intake of toxic elements.
I say, without reservation, that once these two processes are set in motion,
regeneration begins, and new skin forms to replace the old.
pg 32 How long it will take for an individual to detoxify is impossible to
determine. Each patient has his or her own built-in time clock.
pg 32 Keep in mind that it is the direction and not the speed that counts in this
approach.
pg 36 In the case of psoriasis, the first condition to correct is the accumulated
pollution that has infected the entire blood stream and, subsequently, all the
organs and cells of the body.
pg 37 It is impossible to overemphasize the importance of paying close attention
to the colon and its proper functioning.
pg 37 In other words, there can be anatomical reasons for malfunction of the
colon; it is not always a matter of poor diet or bad toilet habits.
pg 40 Categorically speaking, rheumatoid arthritis, eczema, scleroderma, lupus
erythematosus, psoriasis, and a number of other systemic diseases may
very well have the same basic cause. The course of treatment is, therefore,
essentially the same if the patient chooses the alternative route explained in
this book. In these types of diseases, therapy should begin with internal
cleansing, regardless of which disease it is.
pg 41 It follows, then, that the more effective the internal cleansing, the quicker
the disappearance of psoriasis.

Appendix A
Book Quotes - April 18, 2011

Page A-5

pg 41 The Kidneys play as important a role in ridding the body of toxins as do

the liver and bowel. They do so by filtering potentially dangerous
impurities out of the blood and discarding them daily through the bladder
in the form of urine.
pg 41 The kidneys also have many other functions, such as helping the
production of red blood cells, maintaining normal chemistry levels of the
cells, and playing a distinctive role in the acid/alkaline balance, a topic of
utmost concern to the psoriatic.
pg 41 Keeping your kidneys cleansed and free of accumulated waste is
accomplished principally by drinking an adequate amount of pure water
daily.
pg 41 I often advocate that a patient keep a gallon of pure mountain spring
water in the refrigerator at all times, and if desired, add the juice of a few
fresh limes or lemons. This is not only a thirst-quenching drink, but it also
helps flush the kidneys and is alkaline reacting.
pg 42 This indicates that properly functioning kidneys play a significant role in
keeping the skin free of blemishes.
pg 42 The average person rarely recognizes the skin and lungs as avenues of
escape for toxins and impurities. In fact, they are the secondary organs of
elimination -- second only to the bowls and kidneys.
pg 46 The liver and the kidneys are important elimination organs. For the liver,
the natural avenue of elimination, of course, is through the bowel; for the
kidneys, through the bladder and urethra.
pg 46 The lungs, therefore, will take over the task of eliminating some of the
wastes that should have gone through the kidneys, or the skin will take
over for the liver.
pg 46 From the irritation caused by the elimination of poison through this
vicarious channel, we can get bronchitis, pneumonia, or tuberculosis, as
determined by the particular chemistry of the poison being eliminated.
Thus, we can say that the lungs are acting vicariously for the kidneys or are
being called into play, under duress, as substitute kidneys.

Appendix A
Book Quotes - April 18, 2011

Page A-6

pg 46 Thus, the skin is substituting for the liver, or a vicarious elimination is

occurring through the skin.
pg 49 For greater effectiveness, a colonic irrigation or home enema should be
preceded by a cleansing diet, several of which will be discussed later in
this chapter.
pg 50 With regard to the bowel (colon), there is, in my estimation, no more
effective measure devised by modern man than the high colonic irrigation
or high enema.
pg 60 The importance of high-fiber foods in todays diet cannot be
overemphasized. These foods are highly advisable, for they help to
stimulate peristaltic action throughout the intestinal tract and cleanse the
colon by virtue of their course action on the walls.
pg 61 Fiber-rich foods have a cleansing effect throughout the colon because of
their inability to be digested. Fibrous-type foods (roughage) speed up the
process of waste elimination, and the destructive, possibly even cancerous,
elements do not have time to gain a foothold in the large intestine before
they are scraped off the walls of the colon and passed out of the body.
pg 64 Exercise is a vital part of the regimen for clearing psoriasis. It stimulates
the internal structures of the body, increases circulation, activates the
glands, oxygenates the blood, opens the pores, pumps the lymph, and
filters the blood through the liver and kidneys.
pg 70 A psoriatic must fully accept and understand that the consumption or
avoidance of certain foods is vital to his recovery from this dermatological
problem.
pg 71 What is it about diet that is so vital to the psoriatic? It is the importance
of maintaining the proper acid-alkaline (base) balance of the body's
chemistry.
pg 71 For the preservation of good health, nature demands that the body remain
more on the alkaline side than on the acid side. The body becomes more
resistant to all types of disease and physical ailments when engulfed in an
internal chemical atmosphere that is alkaline.

Appendix A
Book Quotes - April 18, 2011

Page A-7

pg 71 A persons blood should always be slightly alkaline, with a pH of 7.3 to

7.5 in chemical reaction, to maintain the optimum in general health and
immunity.
pg 72 It is obviously mandatory to learn which foods are alkaline and which are
acid, as well as which should be avoided altogether, such as the
nightshades and most saturated fats and sweets.
pg 73 Modern nutritionists agree that, in general, fruits are the primary
cleansers of the body, while vegetables are considered to be the builders.
pg 73 All foods are either alkaline forming, acid forming, or neutral. The
alkaline formers are the lighter, watery-type foods that are more easily
digested, such as fruits and vegetables. The acid formers are the heavier,
protein foods, such as meats and grains, which require greater breakdown
for proper digestion and absorption. The neutrals are the dairy products,
such as milk, yogurt, and kefir. If anything, this group tends toward the
alkaline side of the scale.
pg 77 Psoriasis is one of those diseases in which there is a decided shift in the
body chemistry to the acid side. A psoriasis patient, therefore, must be
aware of the significance of maintaining a proper balance and must be
willing to follow the suggested diet for as long as necessary.
pg 165 There are people who, from all outward appearances, want to rid
themselves of the disease, but when success is forthcoming, they retract
and break the rules, thereby sabotaging their healing and allowing the
disease to return.
pg 166 Stressful situations are usually linked to negative circumstances. We
often connect ulcers, headaches, nervousness, and conditions such as
indigestion to an unhappy situation. Perhaps it is our working conditions, a
love affair that has gone sour, family strife, or school pressures.
pg 168 Each persons psoriasis may have an entirely different cause. The goal is
to seek out the cause of the particular condition and do everything possible
to change it.

Page A-8

pg 229 Based on the patients I have seen throughout the years, it seems to me
that in the case of psoriatic arthritis, stressful living conditions heads the
list of possible basic causes.
pg 271 The external manifestation (the lesions) is the result of an overabundant
toxic accumulation within the system being expelled through the sweat
glands. The toxic accumulation in the lymph and blood is due principally
to intestinal permeability (leaky gut).
pg 271 The alleviation, control, healing, and regeneration of the surface cells
(your skin) depend on two factors, primarily: (1) ensuring adequate
drainage of toxins through the normal channels of elimination, namely
your bowls and kidneys, and (2) not polluting the body further by ingesting
elements destructive to the gut wall, achieved by following a carefully
selective diet.

(ISBN 978-0-446-55618-7) was published in 2010.

pg 3 In truth, the light came over the horizon more than a hundred years ago.
Unfortunately, the radical work of some great pioneering scientists has
been overlooked by a mainstream medical model so deeply involved with
its own myths that it was blind to larger truths. Until now. We are in a
process of peeling off the blinders and looking at an entirely new model of
human health while correcting the old model of disease.
pg 3 Its all about balance -- pH balance. The universe operates by keeping
opposites in balance, and the universe contained within your body is no
exception. When imbalance occurs, we get the signs of disease (or disease): low energy, fatigue, poor digestion, excess weight, foggy thinking,
aches and pains, as well as major disorders.
pg 5 Forget cholesterol and carbohydrate counts. Forget calories and fat grams.
Forget blood pressure, blood sugar, hormone levels, or any of the other
markers of health youre used to at the doctors office. It turns out that the
single measurement most important to your health is the pH of your blood
and tissues -- how acidic or alkaline it is.
pg 11 Were starting from the premise that of all the balances the human body
strives to maintain, the most crucial is the one between acid and base (or
alkaline). Mainstream medical texts are all in agreement: The pH balance
of the human bloodstream is one of the most important biochemical
balances in all of human body chemistry. But mainstream medicine does
not understand -- and is not yet seriously researching -- how the body turns
itself inside out and upside down in order to keep that balance. The human
body is meant to be alkaline, and the body will go to great lengths to
maintain the appropriate, slightly basic, nature of its blood and tissues.

pg 12 For one thing, its only when it is acidic that the body is vulnerable to
germs -- in healthy base balance, germs cant get a foothold. Furthermore,
acids are the expression of all sickness and disease, as well as of dis-ease.
In short, good health requires a body in proper acid-base balance.
pg 12 Just as our body temperature must be maintained at 98.6 degrees
Fahrenheit, our blood is ideally maintained at 7.365 pH -- very mildly
basic.
pg 13 Our bodies cannot tolerate extended acid imbalances.
pg 13 In the early stages of the imbalance, the symptoms may not be very
intense and could include such things as skin eruptions, headaches,
allergies, colds and flu, and sinus problems.
pg 14 For example, the body may throw off acids through the skin, producing
symptoms such as eczema, acne, boils, headaches, muscle cramps,
soreness, swelling, irritation, inflammation, and general aches and pains.
Chronic symptoms show up when all possibilities of neutralizing or
eliminating acids have been exhausted.
pg 14 When acid wastes build up in the body and enter the bloodstream, the
circulatory system will try to get rid of them in gas or liquid form, through
the lungs or the kidneys. If there is too much waste to handle, they are
deposited in various organ systems, including the heart, pancreas, liver, and
colon, or stored in fatty tissue, including the breasts, hips, thighs. belly-and brain.
pg 14 We know these deposits by names such as polyps, fluids, cysts, acid
crystals, tumors, warts, bumps, growths, masses, blemishes, moles,
blisters, sacs, and so on.
pg 14 This process of acid waste breakdown and disposal could also be called
the aging process.
pg 15 One of the nastiest consequences of an overly acidic body is the beasties
that thrive therein, including bacteria, yeasts (or fungi), and molds. (They
can be seen very clearly in live blood.)

pg 15 Dietary and metabolic acid waste also set the stage for the potentially
devastating development of a host of microscopic organisms in your body,
starting with Candida.
pg 15 For example, Candida is normally found in the gastrointestinal tract due
to the breakdown of food matter. (Wed actually die without it.) However,
it can easily become drastically overgrown, causing a wide variety of
symptoms, from annoying to chronic to fatal.
pg 16 Candida and other microforms take advantage of the bodys weaker areas,
poisoning and overworking them. In an acidic environment, they basically
get free rein to break down tissues and bodily processes.
pg 16 Bacteria, yeast, fungus, and mold do not themselves produce symptoms in
the body -- their toxic wastes do. Nor do they initiate disease or dis-ease.
pg 16 Most dis-ease and diseases, especially chronic and degenerative ones
from chronic acidity, give rise to microform transformation and then
overgrowth. Between the extremes of athletes foot and AIDS are the
underlying symptoms such as diabetes, cancer, atherosclerosis (clogged
arteries), osteoporosis, chronic fatigue, and more -- including infections
that appear to be transmitted person to person.
pg 17 Microforms are biological transformations of you and live and thrive
in . . . acidity! They love to swim in their own waste products. They also
love the low oxygen levels that come with acidity. On top of that, the
wastes they produce are strong acids themselves. So just in case you
needed further convincing about the importance of getting your body back
to basics, try the mental image of your body cells swimming in a pool of
acid swarming with bacteria, fungus, and mold.
pg 18 When your body goes from acid back to base, bacteria, yeast, fungus, and
mold stop developing and can once again become benign. Their leftover
toxins can then be bound up by certain fats and alkaline minerals and
eliminated from the body.

Page A-12

pg 18 Classical biology, based on the work of Louis Pasteur in the late 1800s,
relies on the idea that disease comes from germs that invade the body from
the outside. Yet in studying the dazzling but shamefully overlooked work
of Pasteurs contemporary Antoine Bechamp and his followers, including
Gunther Enderlein, Claude Bernard, Virginia Livingston-Wheeler, and
Gaston Naessens, Ive learned that, in an acid environment, bacteria and
other microforms can come from our own body cells.
pg 19 Pasteurs germs of the air may contribute to illness, but they are not,
contrary to popular belief, necessary for illness to occur. Their negative
effects are simply added to the compromised environment already existing
in the body.
pg 19 The other key fact about microforms is that they can rapidly change their
form and function. Bacteria can change into yeast, yeast into fungus, and
fungus into mold. With this brilliant work and these critical observations
and these crucial discoveries being overshadowed by Pasteurs influence,
we have for more than a hundred years lost the critical knowledge that disease and disease are conditions of our own inner environment, not
something caused by attack from foreign entities.
pg 19 Degeneration and regeneration both originate with the microzymas. All
cells evolve from them to begin with. In the right circumstances and
environment, microzymas evolve into more complex life-forms, including
bacteria and fungus. It is a two-way street: Bacteria can also de-evolve
back to microzymas. Everything begins and ends with microzymas. What
happens in between depends on the environment.
pg 24 Live blood analysis more directly detects overacidity and overgrowth.
pg 26 Overacidity and microform overgrowth are inextricably linked.
Microforms are a major source of acid in the body. Acidification creates a
comfy environment for microforms. We predispose ourselves to both
conditions through various stresses. The main one is poor diet, although
chronic toxicity from external sources and other physiological stresses
(including poor digestion, more about which follows in chapter 4) play
roles as well. Emotional upheaval, negative thinking patterns and other
psychological stress, and lack of exercise, stretching, and deep breathing
also contribute.

pg 27 Normalizing blood-and-tissue pH will reduce the amount of symptomcausing acids and microforms in your body -- and thus reduce symptoms.
The closer your pH is to 7.365, the higher your level of health and wellbeing, and the stronger your resistance to disease. With this program, you
can also have the lean, trim body youve always wanted. As you get back
to basic, the body naturally begins to seek its own ideal weight.
pg 29 Over the last century or so, mainstream science has told the public that it
has identified the precise cause or causes of some so-called disease. An
example would be the relationship of smoking and lung cancer or obesity
and heart problems. And yet, for many other serious so-called diseases,
scientists admit they are still baffled and need to do more research -- and
need more of our money for that research.
pg 30 It is important that if you want to be responsible for your own body and
the future of your own health, you must start from the premise that acid is
the immediate cause of all the symptoms that are bothering you.
pg 30 Your body faces all kinds of breakdown if it is allowed to get too acidic or
is forced to fight too hard for too long just to stay basic. As I said before
and will no doubt say again, if your dig deep enough, these acidicbreakdown problems underlie just about anything that ails you.
pg 31 You can thank an overly acid internal environment for the excess pounds
you are carrying around. In a defensive maneuver, the body creates fat
cells to carry acids away from your vital organs to try to protect them. In
one sense, your fat is saving your life! But thats why your body doesnt
want to let it go. When you eat and drink to make your body more basic,
your body wont need to keep that fat around anymore.
pg 31 Weight problems can also result from bacteria, yeast, mold, and fungus
interfering with the alkalizing or digestion of food. The nutritional
deficiencies created can actually trigger your body to pack on extra
pounds, in part because you are always hungry.
pg 31 Cravings for acid food such as sugar, outsize appetites, and low blood
sugar levels all follow dietary and metabolic acids and an overgrowth of
harmful bacteria, yeast, fungus, and mold in the body, which then create
even more acidic wastes.

pg 33 The yeast and fungus produced within an overly acidic body can feed on
your protein and other nutrients, interfering with the absorption of
everything you eat by as much as 50 percent. This can cause you to
become excessively thin, which is no healthier than being overweight.
pg 33 Healthy bodies are not overweight or underweight. A healthy body
naturally maintains its own ideal weight.
pg 33 The toxins produced by microforms within an overly acidic, oxygendeprived body contribute significantly to what are commonly considered
the symptoms of allergy. The exotoxins and/or mycotoxins severely stress
the immune system, so it is constantly stimulated, overworked, and on
edge.
pg 33 If you had no symptom-producing acid and/or yeast, and fungus, it would
be impossible for you to have allergies -- another reason to keep your body
in acid/base balance.
pg 34 Allergies are 100 percent reversible with an alkaline diet and lifestyle.
pg 34 Food allergies or intolerances make millions of Americans miserable.
They can even kill. As we commonly think about them, food allergies
cause obvious symptoms as reactions to certain acidic foods, ranging from
stomach pains to rashes to itching to swelling.
pg 35 True food allergies are usually immediate and occur within hours of
ingesting the offending food or drink (which is always acidic!).
pg 35 Fatigue is probably the major symptom or complaint of an overly acidic
body and/or a body overgrown with negative microforms (see the box on
page 37, Jennifers Story). It is the first stage of acidity. Microforms
ferment the electron stores in our bodies that we would otherwise use for
energy. Then, to add insult to injury, they spew out acid waste as a result.
Its as if you were trying to fill your cars gas tank as someone else was
siphoning off the gasoline.

Appendix A

Page A-15

pg 36 With all this, you wont be surprised to learn that overacidity and
microforms are the major players in chronic fatigue syndrome, which may
involve bacterial, yeast, and fungus damage to nerve tissue and
interference with nerve transmission thanks to breakdown of
neurotransmitters.
pg 38 As with Jennifer's experience, depression and other mood disorders are
another result of acidic bodies. With body cell transformation followed by
microform overgrowth, they have then reached epidemic proportions.
pg 38 The usual pathway is exotoxin and/or mycotoxin interference with the
production of coenzyme A, a pathway for the release of usable energy.
pg 38 When coenzyme A decreases, such conditions as depression, anxiety,
panic attacks, irritability, mood swings, and PMS often appear or become
worse. Other symptoms come simply from being poisoned: paranoia, not
being in total control of ones actions, knowing the right thing to do but
being unable to do it, mental incompetence, and a variety of other
behavioral, emotional, and psychological disturbances.
pg 38 Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) and high blood sugar (diabetes) -which are really just low energy and high acidity -- are rampant today, and
devastate a lot of lives. They both stem from -- surprise! -- dietary and
metabolic acids and microform overgrowth.
pg 39 For example, pancreatic cells are directly poisoned and destroyed by the
mycotoxin alloxan. The pancreas produces not only alkalizing buffers -sodium bicarbonate -- for alkalizing the food we eat, but also insulin, the
alkalizing hormone that controls the blood acid sugar. A deficiency in
alkaline compounds such as sodium and potassium bicarbonate and insulin
leads to hyperglycemia or the high-acidity disease called diabetes.
pg 39 Type 2 diabetes is the natural physiological and metabolic result of
consuming large quantities of sugars and refined carbohydrates and meat
protein, especially without engaging in regular physical exercise (which
could help compensate for such dietary practices).

Appendix A
Book Quotes - April 18, 2011

Page A-16

pg 39 What that means, among other things, is that the solution is quite
straightforward: Cut out all forms of sugar, eliminate animal proteins, and
get regular exercise.
pg 39 If your body is overacid -- meaning there are too many acids for it to
dispose of through urination, perspiration, deification, and respiration -the body goes into preservation mode and releases cholesterol from the
liver to buffer those acids in an attempt to protect itself from their toxic
effects.
pg 40 Your cholesterol level, and your risk for heart attack or stroke, rises as
your acid level increases. Reduce your acid level by reducing acid foods in
your diet, and exercising daily, and youll reduce the cholesterol -- your
body wont need to protect itself against acids by producing it -- along with
your risks.
pg 41 Even conventional doctors recognize the fact that the body leaches
calcium and sodium out of bones to handle the digestion of meat. Or, as I
look at it, the body steals alkaline minerals that are supposed to be at work
strengthening bone and uses them to protect itself from infusions of acidic
animal protein by alkalizing it. The body strips away bone mass in a
desperate attempt to neutralize excess acids in the blood and tissues.
Osteoporosis is the direct result.
pg 41 Conversely, you can protect your bones (and muscles, and other organs)
with an alkaline lifestyle and diet. Keeping the body alkaline (through diet
and the right kind of exercise) is the best way to slow down aging in
general, and avoid all disease processes, including bone loss and
osteoporosis.
pg 43 The kidneys are responsible for eliminating acids out of the blood and
recycling alkalinity back in. If acids are not eliminated from the blood,
they move into the tissues. An acidic lifestyle and diet stresses the kidneys,
sometimes to the point where they stop functioning well.
pg 44 Cancer cells are once-healthy cells that have become cancerous. And they
are a symptom of acidity. That is, when healthy cells are corrupted by
dietary and metabolic acids, they can become cancerous. The more acid we
have in our bodies, the greater the risk of developing cancerous tissue.

Appendix A

Page A-17

pg 45 You can fight the development of a cancerous condition by increasing the

alkalinity of your tissues, building in a diet around green vegetables, fresh
vegetable juice, unprocessed salts, good oils, and alkaline water together
with nutritional supplements, exercise, and alkaline lifestyle choices (along
the lines described in chapters 12, 13, and 14). You have to cut out acidic
foods such as animal protein, alcohol, and sugar, and give up acidic habits
as well.
pg 50 Good digestion is critical for good health. And a healthy digestive system
is critical to good digestion. But the digestive system should really be
called the alkalizing buffering system, because the key part of its work is
not the breakdown of the food per se, but the alkalizing of that food. From
the mouth to the stomach, to the duodenum to the intestines, the
digestive organs are really all about trying to raise the pH of the food we
eat to an alkaline state.
pg 50 There is no more common physiological malfunction in humans than
indigestion in all its many forms. Antacids, for taming just one of those
forms of indigestion, are the number one over-the-counter remedy in the
United States. (So we also already know the true cause of indigestion:
acidity!)
pg 50 When we tolerate or ignore indigestion, or mask symptoms with some
drugstore chemical, we are missing the urgent messages our bodies are
sending us. We must listen.
pg 51 Recurrent or chronic indigestion or nausea on its own can be deadly,
gradually impeding intestinal function. These symptoms can go unnoticed
until serious conditions exist, conditions such as Crohns, irritable bowel
syndrome, or even a cancerous colon.
pg 51 Digestive discomfort or difficulty is an early warning system. But only if
we attend to it. The symptoms of digestive disturbance -- and potential
digestive disease -- are a result of dietary and metabolic acids, including
microform overgrowth and the resultant acid toxins.
pg 51 Digestion happens in phases, and all of them must be in good working
order to maintain good health.

Page A-18

pg 54 Overgrowth of microforms, which feed on the nutrients and electron

energy we should be getting (and make their poisonous waste out of them),
just make things worse. Without proper nutrition, the body cant heal or
regenerate its tissues as necessary. If you cannot digest or assimilate food
and transform chyme (or liquid food) into blood, you will begin breaking
down body cells to make blood (body wasting) and eventually starve. That
not only decimates your energy levels and makes you feel sick, but also
accelerates the aging (or dying) process.
pg 54 Youve probably run across recommendations for digestive enzymes and/
or probiotics to improve the health of your digestive tract. In fact, I used to
recommend them myself. But through live and dried blood analysis, my
understanding has evolved, and now I want to emphasize the negative
consequences of these supplements, and warn you to steer clear of them on
your path to an alkaline lifestyle.
pg 55 Enzymes and probiotics are a bit more complicated, because they may
seemingly be beneficial in the short term. Thats because they do help
break down undigested matter from meat and dairy, and so can provide
temporary relief from constipation. Think of it this way: Yes, they help to
break down hard-to-digest animal protein and meat. But guess what. You
are meat! It will break you down, too.
pg 55 Enzymes and probiotics have many harmful effects over the long run.
They are acidifying to the body, for one thing, and can damage healthy
cells and tissues, including the delicate intestinal villi.
pg 55 Probiotics are transformations of what used to be healthy cells. There is
no such thing as friendly or healthy bacteria. The presence of bacteria
is evidence of an acidic environment. Ideally, the small and large intestines
will be clean and free of all microforms. You dont want to be adding any
in there!
pg 56 Enzymes can help break down meat and dairy, which rarely completely
break down on their own, but a far better choice is to eliminate all animal
protein from the diet. In cases of extreme bowel constipation, enzymes
may be used, but only for a short period of time. Youd be a lot better off,
though, using mineral salts such as magnesium carbonate or magnesium
oxide to break up undigested proteins in the small intestine. You could also

drink whole-leaf cold-pressed aloe vera juice to help break up undigested

food in the bowel without any negative impact on healthy tissue and
without damaging the delicate intestinal villi.
pg 56 Digestive difficulty throughout the intestines often prevents the proper
breakdown of proteins. Partially digested proteins, not usable by the body,
can still be absorbed into the blood. In this form, they serve no other
purpose than to congest and feed the microforms, increasing the amount of
waste they produce. These protein fragments also stimulate an immune
system response to clean up the bloody mess.
pg 58 Heartburn, gas, bloating, ulcers, nausea, and gastritis (irritation of the
walls of the intestines due to acidic gas and liquid) are all a result of a
gastrointestinal tract overgrown with microforms. So, too, is constipation,
which in addition to being an unpleasant symptom causes more problems
and more symptoms. Constipation often shows up as, or comes along with,
a coated tongue, diarrhea, cramps, gas, foul odor, intestinal pain, and
various forms of inflammation, such as colitis and diverticulitis. (Weve all
heard the remark that a self-centered person thinks their stuff doesnt
stink. The solemn truth is, it isnt supposed to! If it does, thats nature
hammering a warning on the door that you are overacidic.).
pg 59 Acidity in the stomach and colon varies depending on the food you eat.
High-water-content, low-sugar foods, like those recommended in the
program, cause less acidity. High-sugar and high-protein foods increase
acidity.
pg 59 As the food moves into the small intestine, if necessary the pancreas adds
additional alkaline substances including sodium bicarbonate to the mix to
raise the pH (8.0 to 8.4).
pg 60 At baseline, we must replenish the alkaline design of the digestive tract
with alkalizing compounds such as sodium bicarbonate. With a proper
alkaline diet, bacteria and yeast will be eliminated. You can help move the
process along with alkaline mineral salt supplements, such as sodium and
potassium bicarbonate (see chapter 12).

pg 65 All food ingested releases electrons for energy, leaving an ash residue.
This ash residue can be neutral, acidic, or alkaline, depending mostly on
the mineral content of the original food. For example, potassium, calcium,
magnesium, sodium, zinc, silver, copper, and iron form basic ash; sulfur,
phosphorus, chlorine, and iodine leave acid ash. Most elements are
alkaline.
pg 65 In general, animal foods -- meat, eggs, dairy -- processed and refined
foods, yeast products, fermented foods, grains, artificial sweeteners, sweet
fruit, and natural and artificial sugars are acidifying, as are alcohol, coffee,
chocolate, black tea, and sodas. Vegetables, on the other hand, are
alkalizing. That includes a few that are technically fruits: avocado, tomato,
cucumber, bell pepper. A few nonsweet citrus fruits, such as grapefruit,
lemon, and lime are also basic in the body, as are sprouted seeds, nuts, and
grains. Grains are acidifying, though a few (millet, buckwheat, and spelt)
are only very mildly so. Raw foods are more alkalizing, while cooked food
is more acidifying.
pg 67 Green vegetables and particularly leafy greens have the highest amounts
of chlorophyll.
pg 67 You want to focus your diet on a wide variety of vegetables, and, largely
because of the chlorophyll, you should make the majority of those veggies
green.
pg 67 Vegetables are also an excellent source of the alkaline salts that protect
against microform overgrowth and the associated mycotoxins, as well as
helping to neutralize metabolic and dietary acids in the blood and tissues.
pg 67 Vegetables, and particularly green vegetables, are incredibly nutrientdense and provide just about all the vitamins, minerals, and micronutrients
you could ever need.
pg 67 They are rich in antioxidants (as are all alkaline foods), which protect
cells all over your body from oxidative damage by buffering dietary and
metabolic acids and supporting the lymphocytes or white blood cells that
release singlet oxygen, and hydroxyl radicals.

pg 68 Vegetables are loaded with the fiber that is crucial to your diet. Besides
the accepted benefits of fiber in reducing cancer and other serious health
concerns, studies have shown that fiber markedly decreases mycotoxicity.
Fiber acts like a sponge, soaking up acids from the body. It also works like
a broom, cleaning out the intestines.
pg 69 The very best dietary source of chlorophyll is grasses. What I said about
the benefits of green fruit and vegetables goes double for grasses.
pg 69 Grasses are incredibly nutrient-dense, even more so than vegetables as a
general rule. (After all, how do you think a cow gets by?) Wheatgrass and
barley grass are particularly good sources of chlorophyll, for example, and
it is the chlorophyll that gives grasses the power to regenerate our bodies at
the molecular, cellular, and emotional level.
pg 70 One of the most dangerous fad diets is the no-fat obsession. Fats play a
crucial role in our bodies, and getting none at all opens our bodies up to
nutritional deficiency and the degeneration that comes with it. The key
thing is to get healthy fats, not the artery-clogging, zero-nutrient varieties
most Americans eat (primarily saturated fats and partially hydrogenated
oils -- liquid oils chemically altered into solids).
pg 70 The long-chain polyunsaturated fats from fish, seeds, fruits, and
vegetables are alkaline, and buffer acids created through diet and
metabolism. On the other hand, saturated fat -- found mainly in animal
proteins -- is acidic. And we dont need any of that.
pg 70 What your body does need from good oils are the essential fatty acids
(EFAs). EFAs are, well, essential -- vital to good health. They are the
building blocks of the fats that strengthen cell walls, including blood cell
walls.
pg 71 Chapter 7 looks at water in depth, but the main message bears repeating:
Plenty of water -- correction: clean, pure alkaline water -- is absolutely
crucial to creating a healthy pH and a healthy body. The body is 70 percent
alkaline water overall. Your eyes are 98 percent alkaline water! Your blood,
94 percent. So we should provide all the parts of the body with a lot of this
basic component. That includes foods that are actually high in alkaline
water. That means -- you guessed it -- green electron-rich vegetables and

Appendix A

low-sugar fruits! And of course you should also drink up. As youll see in
chapter 7, the human body thrives with plenty of electron-rich alkaline
water with a pH of 9.5.
pg 72 If you dont get enough water, youll get fat. Simple as that. For one
thing, even mild dehydration slows metabolism by as much as 3 percent.
For another, we are so poorly attuned to our bodies thirst signals that we
interpret them as hunger pangs. That is: If we dont drink enough, we eat
too much. Third, if we dont get enough water, our bodies will actually
retain water, and well feel bloated and uncomfortable -- and look even
fatter than strictly necessary! An acidic body pulls water into the tissues to
try to neutralize the acids there.
pg 72 Most important, the body uses water to neutralize acids, to dilute excess
acid, and to literally wash them (and all toxins) out of the body via urine
and sweat through the bowels. Without enough water, your body becomes
too acidic and goes into preservation -- fat storing -- mode. A drop of just
over 2 percent in body water content is enough to make that happen. In
case you think that sounds like such a big change that its unlikely to ever
happen to you, take note: Its not unusual to lose 2 percent of your body
water during an average hour of exercise.
pg 72 If thats not enough to get you to drink up, let me add that in addition to
fat, not getting enough water will also make you sick and tired. In fact,
lack of water is the number one cause of daytime fatigue. Without enough
water, you wont have enough energy. Youll feel tired and weak.
pg 73 As for making you sick: When the dehydration gets a little more severe,
symptoms include acid reflux (heartburn), joint and back pain, migraines,
fibromyalgia, constipation, colitis, and angina. Serious dehydration is
linked with asthma, allergies, diabetes, hypertension, and skin problems
like eczema, rashes, spots, blemishes, and acne. Degenerative conditions
including morbid obesity, heart disease, and cancer are all linked with
serious long-term dehydration.
pg 85 Phytonutrients help prevent cancer, lower cholesterol, relieve arthritis and
osteoporosis, stop hormones from being turned into acids, and more.

pg 101 Sugar feeds biological transformation like gasoline feeds a fire.
pg 176 For serious cleansing, acute or difficult conditions such as chronic
constipation, diverticulitis, Crohns, irritable bowel syndrome, or chronic
diarrhea, you may want to add (or use instead) a lower-bowel-cleansing
formula or other intestinal cleanser.
pg 193 Caprylic acid controls negative microforms and their toxins. It is an
antifungal saturated fatty acid approved by the FDA in 1984 for sale over
the counter. Studies have shown that patients treated with caprylic acid
have completely eliminated fungus from their stool. It can also bring about
a remission of symptoms in fungus-related health problems, and appears to
be safe and effective with no serious side effects.
pg 240 Emotions can cause even more acid than food and drink. Powerful
negative emotions come from all sorts of places and in all shapes and
forms. They can include thoughts, feelings, experiences, conscious and
unconscious memories, and dreams. Any of the many and various
problems in living can cause emotional trauma. They all come under the
umbrella of stress. And stress causes significant amounts of acid to be
dumped into your body.

published in 1996. The seventh printing (ISBN 0-9678999-0-7) - Conquering

pg 1 The doctors had missed that at age four Karen had acute tonsillitis, was
given a lot of antibiotics and eventually a tonsillectomy. Candida
overgrowth started then
pg 1 Candida albicans is the specific name for a strain of fungus or yeast that
naturally exists in the digestive tract. In healthy individuals it can coexist
with other microbes causing no problems. When the immune system is
weak, the diet is high in refined breads, sugar, and alcohol or when
antibiotics or cortisone drugs are taken, the fungal-bacteria balance is
disrupted and the fungal colonies become overgrown.
pg 2 Other diseases linked to candidiasis include chronic fatigue, irritable
bowel syndrome, migraines, depression, panic episodes, lupus, multiple
sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, endometriosis, and fibromyalgia. People
experiencing no success with their current therapies are encouraged to
explore possibilities that they may have fungal overgrowth and seek
appropriate therapy.
pg 4 In healthy individuals, Candida albicans occurs in small colonies and
coexists with beneficial microbes or bacteria. The presence of yeast and
bacteria in controlled balance does not cause any problems.
pg 4 Various fungi are attracted to specific parts of humans. Thus, Candida
albicans gravitates to the gastrointestinal tract, Aspergillus to the
respiratory tract, Trichophyton to the feet, and Monilia to the vagina.

pg 5 Conversely, Candida Related Complex (CRC) is certainly not easily

treated. It occurs when the living yeast gains entrance to the bloodstream
and the lymphatics. Their mode of entrance is two-fold.
The first is by way of penetration of their root-like tentacles into the
intestinal wall. This penetration destroys the mucous membrane system of
the intestines. Some people call this leaking of toxins into the bloodstream
the leaky gut syndrome.
The second is by passing through the intestinal wall.
pg 5 The balance between bacteria normally in the gut and/or vaginal flora and
fungus is disrupted when the bacteria become weakened and the fungi
become too strong. As a result of this imbalance, the Candida albicans can
rapidly multiply and cause an overgrowth.
pg 5 In CRC, one of the first systems to be compromised is the immune
system. It forces the immune system to focus on the digestive tract, the
source of CRC.
pg 5 This spread of Candida albicans has been described as a domino effectone body system after another falls prey to CRC, unless it is stopped or
reversed.
pg 7 Disrupting the intestinal absorptive process results in two widely differing
physical characteristics in those infected with CRC. These patients can
become extremely thin because their food passes too quickly through their
gastrointestinal tract. Other patients can become overweight, some even
obese. In these individuals, no matter how much food they eat, their
nutritional needs are not met; therefore they are often hungry within an
hour or two of eating.
pg 7 All types of fungal species grow well over a range of 3 to 8. C. albicans
grow best at 5.1 to 6.4, other species grow at 2 or below; i.e. they can grow
over a broad range of pH. However, the pH can effect the morphological
form of C. albicans and this way effect the ability of the fungus to adhere
to host cells and invade them. If a pH below 6 is sustained for a long time
they can form very long hyphal strands that enable them to colonize greater
surface areas.
I recommend keeping the pH within normal range or slightly alkaline.

has a negative charge and attracts the toxins which have a positive charge.
It has a pH of 11, very alkalizing.
pg 7 In 2008 Dr. Tulio Simoncini M.D., an Italian oncologist published his
findings about candida as the etiology of cancer in his book Cancer is
Fungus. This supports findings by A.V. Constantini and myself as
published in our writings in the 1980s and 1990s. In Dr. Simoncinis
book he describes how a fungus infection always forms the basis of every
neoplastic formation, these formation or colonies then spread within the
whole body and its many organs and systems. The growth of the fungal
colonies, together with the reaction of tissue that tries to defend itself
against the invasion causes the tumor. In his opinion, candida is the only
cause of cancer.
pg 9 A history of repeated use of antibiotics or prednisone or both (even as
early as childhood) is one of the main causes of CRC. This can happen
after prolonged (several months or more) or repeated (more than three
times in 12 months) treatments with antibiotics. When bacteria are
destroyed by antibiotics, the fungi grow. In essence, one infection is traded
for another.
pg 10 A study reported in the 1988 CRC Update compared five Candida diets.
At the top of each list was a restriction against consumption of refined
sugar. This food item feeds the fungi allowing them to proliferate; it is
addictive and over consumption is the norm; it causes an imbalance in
acid/alkaline levels, wreaks havoc with the sugar/insulin blood ratio
(causing physical stress), and increases the physical need for vitamins and
minerals.
pg 10 Candida albicans feeds on sugar and foods baked with yeast. People with
CRC develop a craving for sweets, often describing an insatiable urge to
eat sugar or bread or drink beer or other alcoholic beverages. Many
sufferers attribute this to poor self control and often have shame and guilt
associated with this craving and binging. What many do not realize is that
their cravings are caused by the yeast they are harboring which is begging
to be fed.

pg 10 Another dietary factor is the regular consumption of poultry, meat, and

milk. The animals from which we get these products have been treated
with antibiotics and hormones that are then passed on to the consumer of
the meat or milk, thus destroying good bacteria in the gut of the
consumer.
pg 10 Low bulk, highly-refined carbohydrate diets also help establish a breeding
ground for yeast.
pg 10 Babies, as they descend through the birth canal, can be exposed to
Candida, often developing a fungal mouth thrush and fungal diaper rash
soon after birth.
pg 11 Stress and exhaustion can predispose one to CRC by placing an enormous
burden on the immune system. Stress of illness or overwork and/or trauma
from the loss of a loved one or a job is often a causative agent of CRC.
pg 11 Tobacco is manufactured by application of a great deal of sugar (in the
curing mixture) to the leaves, and this curing process allows various yeast
and fungi to grow.
pg 11 Actually, there are two types of CRC. The first is intestinal and is mainly
a result of the food we eat. The second is respiratory and is produced by
contact with the pollen of weeds, grasses and trees, house dust, and animal
dander. Thus, CRC is caused by either diet or environment.
pg 11 Mold spores lodge deep in the lungs resulting in airway obstruction and
infections, and mycotoxins attack the brain, causing memory loss, seizures,
movement disorders, and other cognitive deficits.
pg 13 The difficulty in identifying CRC leaves many physicians unconvinced
and skeptical of the existence of this illness. Patients are often told that if
their symptoms do not respond to prescribed treatments or if the symptoms
return again shortly after treatment ceases, then the symptoms must be
psychosomatic.
pg 14 The RAST, which accurately measures the overgrowth of Candida
albicans in the bloodstream, has been approved by the FDA. Furthermore,
there are other laboratory tests which can be used to determine CRC.

Page A-28

pg 14 One of the most prominent symptoms caused by CRC is intense cravings

for sweets, breads, and cheeses.
pg 15 Cravings for alcoholic beverages such as beer and wine are another clue.
pg 15 These cravings are frequent and intense. Many patients are convinced
there is something terribly wrong with them psychologically or
behaviorally and they often have greatly diminished self-esteem.
pg 15 The patient experiences a combination of fatigue, mood swings,
irritability, anxiety, depression, and headaches, combined with poor dietary
habits, chronic stress, and little or no tolerance for exercise. These
symptoms are intensified on damp and muggy days or when in moldy
places such as basements.
pg 15 Patients complain of abdominal bloating as a recurrent problem.
pg 15 There is often a link between the type of food ingested and the occurrence
of this type bloating. Foods that cause this reaction are those high in sugar
and starch, and beer and wine. In severe situations almost any type of food
ingested will trigger this reaction.
pg 15 Another major clue to the presence of CRC is a history of the person
having been treated with antibiotics, birth control pills, or corticosteroids.
pg 15 Recurrent infections (sinusitis, earaches, urinary tract infections, vaginal
infections, bronchitis, etc.) that do not respond to antibiotics or prednisone
therapy or keep recurring after drug treatment, are another clue. In fact, in
most cases patients get worse with these drug therapies because the fungalbacterial ratio is comprised even more.
pg 16 Recurrent, severe allergies that do not respond or respond minimally to
antihistamines (anti-allergy medications) are another red flag. These
sensitivities include a wide range of symptoms: nasal drainage,
gastrointestinal disturbances, sensitivity to scents and fumes, or skin
eruptions with itching that can affect any part of the body but often occur
in the armpits, groin, and under the nails.

pg 16 Identifying and diagnosing CRC is difficult because of the complexity of

the multi-system illness.
pg 21 Mycotoxin expert A.V. Constantini, M.D., is quoted in the World Health
Organization (WHO) Mycotoxins in Human Health Newsletter as warning,
The data presented . . . points to our need to more fully appreciate the role
of fungi and mycotoxins in the etiology (origin) of the major human
diseases which have for so long remained a mystery as to their cause.
Now some scientists believe that fungi and the toxins they produce are the
cause of major diseases.
pg 21 In another study conducted by Dr. Constantini, fungi are implicated as the
cause of many serious illnesses. These include a number of malignancies to
organs including the esophagus, lung, colon, kidney, breast, uterus, blood,
lymph nodes, brain, and skin. Some autoimmune diseases were also found
to be caused by fungi. These include: Scleroderma (a thickening of skin
especially on arms, hands, and face, puffy hands and feet in the morning,
and joint pain and stiffness), diabetes (excessive urine excretion),
rheumatoid arthritis (joint disorder), Sjogrens syndrome (red, gritty eyes),
psoriasis (red, scaly skin), and systemic lupus erythematosus (skin lesions).
Fungi and the toxins they they produce have also been documented as the
cause of gout (sudden, severe joint pain with swelling and redness) and
hyperuricemia (excessive uric acid in the blood). The following
cardiovascular diseases have also been documented to be caused by fungi
and their toxins: atherosclerosis (cholesterol deposits in the arteries),
hyperlipidemia (excessive fats in the blood), angina, myocardial infarction
(heart muscle dies due to blockage of blood supply), arrhythmia (irregular
heartbeat), carotid artery occlusion (neck artery blockage), stroke,
intermittent claudication (cramping of leg muscles), and gangrene.
pg 43 Deficiency of normal intestinal flora (good bacteria) can be caused by
exposure to antibiotics, Galland believes, or a diet depleted of soluble fiber.
This can result in food intolerance and a condition called irritable bowel
syndrome (IBS).
pg 45 Bentonite is said to absorb up to 180 times its own weight in bacteria,
toxic debris, and even parasites . . . Psyllium acts like a broom to help
eliminate stagnant waste in the gut.

Appendix A

Page A-30

pg 45 Psyllium is an intestinal cleanser. Bentonite absorbs the harmful toxins

produced by fungi, bacteria, and worms and flushes them out of the body.
The combination of these two products are a great aid in eliminating toxins
from the intestinal tract.
pg 46 Penicillin, the first antibiotic, came on the market in 1940 to fight
infection caused by bacteria. Many other antibiotics followed and there are
now 100 varieties on the market. Fifty years later, bacteria are becoming
more resistant to drugs; common bacteria are able to defend themselves
against previously successful drug treatments.
pg 46 Clearing the intestinal tract of parasites and keeping the body free of their
return can be done with natural remedies including: caprylic acid (liquid
form works best), psyllium, bentonite, friendly flora, Echinacea (an
immune-boosting herb), vitamins and minerals, proper rest, food, and
exercise.
pg 46 Some therapists also recommend colonic irrigation, a gentle washing of
the colon or large intestine combined with external massage. One must
correct a diet which is high in sugar, refined carbohydrates, raw or
undercooked beef, pork, and fish, and fiber-depleted processed foods. Lack
of fiber slows the peristaltic action resulting in constipation. This results in
impacted fecal matter -- a rich breeding ground for parasites and bacteria.
pg 63 The diet of the average North American consists of food that is
overprocessed, low in fiber, and high in refined sugar. We also consume
large amounts of red meat, dairy products, and wheat. According to a 1997
Journal of the American Medical Association article, this diet results in
fewer friendly bacteria in the intestinal tract. Furthermore, many of us
eat too much, too often, and we mix too many different types of food in the
same meal.
pg 63 Candida albicans, normally inhabiting colons of even healthy individuals,
really prefer to exist in a polluted colon because they thrive in an
environment which is short of oxygen and putrid. When CRC patients
clean out their colons, the fungi retreat to their former harmless state.

Appendix A

Page A-31

pg 64 One consoling aspect about the anti-CRC diet is that it is temporary.

Many patients need to be on a strict diet for only a few months while they
are eliminating the fungi from their system. They need to persevere until
they are rid on the discomforts they suffer. The time required will vary
from person to person.
pg 66 When eating more than one type of food at a time, the body stimulates
both acid and alkaline enzymes. Protein digestion, for example, needs a
highly acid medium for digestion, whereas carbohydrates and starches
require an alkaline medium. If both of these types of foods are ingested at
the same meal, the two enzymes interfere with each other and thus with the
digestive process. This interference causes food to move along the
digestive tract undigested, wasting valuable vitamins and minerals.
pg 66 The following are some food combining tips. Avoid eating carbohydrates
with fruits, proteins with carbohydrates, two proteins at the same meal, fats
with protein, and fruits with proteins with starches. Consume one starch
per meal, fruit only with lettuce and celery, salads with proteins or
starches, and melons alone.
pg 66 Learning and using proper food combining techniques will maximize the
amount of nutritional vitamins and minerals absorbed (necessary in the
fight against CRC) as well as alleviate indigestion and intestinal problems.
A book by Dennis Nelson, Food Combining Simplified, is a recommended
source of information on food combining.
pg 67 The manner of food preparation affects the nutritional value of the food. It
is best to eat vegetables and fruits as close to their raw, uncooked state as
possible because foods in this state contain all their enzymes intact.
pg 74 The colon cleansing program consists of fungicides, intestinal cleaners,
and friendly bacteria. This program expels CRC from the intestines,
allowing the immune system to spring back and clean up CRC elsewhere
in the body.
pg 74 It has often been stated that disease and death begin in the colon. A colon
coated with a thick layer of built-up fecal material is a perfect breeding
ground for fungi. It is this breeding ground which needs to be cleaned out
so the Candida albicans are not able to live and multiply.

Appendix A
Book Quotes - April 18, 2011

Page A-32

pg 74 A polluted colon produces toxins; the body then absorbs these toxins and
poor health results. Additional fecal build-up means more toxins, and thus
more illness.
pg 75 Each portion of the colon has a direct relationship to the other body parts
and functions. If there is pollution in part or all of the colon, illness results
elsewhere in the body. Conversely, a clean colon means good health
elsewhere in the body.
pg 76 A gentle, natural method of eliminating colon toxicity can be
accomplished by using two natural agents: psyllium and bentonite. Neither
one is absorbed into the system, but rather each absorbs (it acts like a
magnet) and then expels toxic materials in the feces.
pg 76 The ingredients used in the colon cleansing program consists of four
items. Caprylic acid is added to safflower oil. This mixture, called
Caproyl, is the portion of the program which is fungicidal, it kills the fungi
on contact. Psyllium powder is an intestinal cleanser which works to clean
the debris from the colon where the fungi breed. Bentonite is a detoxifier.
It removes the toxic waste (CRCs poisonous by-product) from the body.
And finally, beneficial bacteria is reimplanted to replace those which have
been lost, often due to antibiotics.
pg 77 Caproyl, containing liquid capryllic acid and safflower oils, is the
fungicidal component of the anti-CRC colon cleansing program. Caprylic
acid, a fatty acid, is a broad-spectrum antifungal agent effective against
Candida Albicans and other fungi, but harmless to friendly intestinal
flora.
pg 77 In this program, caprylic acid acquires its needed sustained-release
properties from a gel, formed by the mixture of Caproyl, colon cleansers,
and water. This thick gel traps the caprylic acid and slows its transit
through the colon.
pg 77 Psyllium (pronounced silly-um) is the second part of the anti-CRC
colon cleansing program and a key element in deriving the needed gelled
consistency which slowly moves caprylic acid through the intestinal tract.
There are two parts of the psyllium that are useful in cleansing the colon:
the seeds and the husks. The seeds, even when crushed into a powder, still

Appendix A
Book Quotes - April 18, 2011

Page A-33

retain tiny granules, which scrape away the accumulated fecal build-up on
the colon wall. The husks absorb water and form the gel, retarding the
passage of the fungicidal capryllic acid.
pg 78 Psyllium is a plant grown commercially in India and its husk is used as a
bulk-forming laxative in numerous products. These husks expand when
mixed with liquid, creating a roughage-like gelled substance. The
expanding bulk cleans out the pockets lining the colon wall.
pg 78 The intake of psyllium also reduces toxic overload. This reaction occurs
when poisons are released by dead and dying fungi (referred to as the dieoff reaction) associated with the eradication of CRC. The toxic overload
is a result of the successful killing of the Candida albicans fungus by the
fungicidal Caproyl. The psyllium gel absorbs these toxins from the colon
and carries them out of the system.
pg 78 One can now easily see why a psyllium product containing both seeds and
husks is preferred. Most psyllium products are husks only and sold solely
for their laxative effect. This husks-only psyllium possesses minimal
intestinal cleansing action, because it lacks powdered psyllium seeds.
pg 79 Bentonite is the third part of the colon cleansing program developed to
eliminate CRC from the body. Bentonite, a volcanic ash found in the Black
Hills of South Dakota, is an inert mineral silicate. When processed into a
very fine powder and suspended in distilled water, bentonite absorbs (acts
like a magnet pulling toxins to it) intestinal waste products without being
absorbed into the system. It just passes through the intestinal tract
attaching the toxins to itself.
pg 79 Because bentonite itself is not absorbed into the body, whatever it absorbs
is removed in the feces. Bentonite provides an excellent vehicle for
removing miscellaneous intestinal poisons and toxins generated by
Candida albicans.
pg 79 Reimplanting beneficial bacteria is the fourth part of the colon cleansing
program for ridding CRC from the body. Beneficial bacteria needs to be
reimplanted in the colon to help provide equilibrium in the intestinal tract
-- a balance between friendly and harmful bacteria.

Appendix A
Book Quotes - April 18, 2011

Page A-34

pg 79 The presence of food in the stomach activates stomach acids, which kill
the beneficial bacteria. So the colon cleansing program must be ingested on
an empty stomach to preserve the beneficial bacteria.
pg 80 An added benefit of ingesting beneficial bacteria is a lessoning of food
allergies. A British doctor, J. O. Hunter, hypothesizes that patients with
food intolerance (allergies) have an abnormal gut flora. Restoring this
bacterial balance to its proper levels can greatly improve a CRC patients
tolerance for food.
pg 81 Psyllium has a stool loosening effect while bentonite has a stool
tightening effect. Thus, if the patient tends to have loose stools, 2
tablespoons of bentonite are recommended. If, on the other hand, the
patient tends toward constipation, less bentonite and more psyllium is
recommended.
pg 82 Die-Off Reaction - Many patients with CRC, but not all, experience
uncomfortable effects within the first week, often commencing on the
second day following the beginning of treatment. These effects may
include flu-like symptoms (stuffiness, headache, general achiness, or
diarrhea), skin rashes, heavy limbs, vaginal irritation and/or discharge,
unusual numbness in the legs, or possibly even mental confusion. The
exact die-off symptoms are many and varied. These symptoms result from
the release of toxins from rapidly dying Candida albicans in the colon.
pg 118 On the other hand, complex carbohydrates are helpful in keeping CRC in
check. The bulk from these foods provide fiber needed to stimulate the
peristaltic action of the intestine. Peristalsis is the contraction of the
intestine, occurring in waves, which propel the intestinal contents onward.
pg 118 Without high fiber foods, a toxic build-up occurs. This, of course, is a
perfect breeding ground for fungi and harmful bacteria. Foods containing
complex carbohydrates include green vegetables, beans, whole grains,
nuts, seeds, oat and rice bran, and fruits.

The following are direct quotes from The Probiotic Revolution. Page
numbers that are appear next to the quote ( i.e. pg 4 ) indicate the page on which
the quote can be found.
pg 4 Probiotics are vital for the immune system, too. They actually send
signals to the immune system that reduce destructive overreactions,
including inflammation. This means that insufficiencies affect immune
responses - and therefore every aspect of our health.
pg 4 Though our bodies dont always contain enough probiotics, we can easily
solve that problem. All it takes is increasing our consumption of certain
healthy foods (many are probably in your diet already) and perhaps taking
some readily available nutritional supplements, which need to be carefully
selected.
pg 4 Probiotics protect us in two ways. One is to compete successfully with
potentially harmful microbes in our digestive tract, also known as the gut.
pg 5 Perhaps even more important, probiotics help the immune system to
function properly. Our immune system acts like a police force, protecting
us from germs. But if it overreacts, it can be the cause of disease rather
than the cure. A trigger-happy immune system may discharge its potent
weapons against harmless substances -- dust, cat dander, eggs, peanuts -thereby producing allergic responses.
pg 5 An unrestrained immune system can even turn against our own cells,
causing autoimmune disorders such as ulcerative colitis, Chrohns disease,
and rheumatoid arthritis.
pg 5 But other food components - called prebiotics - strengthen probiotics.
pg 7 Probiotics are now used to prevent or treat diarrhea due to antibiotic
treatment, infections, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or the unfamiliar
microbes encountered in foreign travel.
pg 8 Most yeast infections are caused by Candida albicans, a yeast thats
normally kept in check by the probiotic Lactobacillus and other microbes
that live in our intestines.

pg 9 Autoimmune diseases are among the most baffling and disabling of

conditions. Weve identified more than eighty such diseases, including
rheumatoid arthritis, type 1 diabetes, lupus, and psoriasis. These
conditions are caused not by some external enemy, but by our own immune
system.
pg 9 Probiotic bacteria have enormous potential to help, because they signal
the immune system to show restraint.
pg 9 Because scientific attention to probiotics has just begun, many pieces of
the puzzle are still missing.
pg 11 However, from the 1960s on, theres been a dramatic rise in diseases and
chronic conditions for which there is no obvious germ-based cause.
Asthma is just one example: its not identified with any germ, its not
infectious, and its incidence has soared in the past four decades.
pg 13 Whats new now is the contribution offered by controlled laboratory and
clinical research. Were not only confirming that probiotics promote good
health; were also discovering which bacterial strains are most effective for
particular problems.
pg 14 Our knowledge is expanding rapidly as probiotics become the target of
intense medical research.
pg 15 No one realized that as we were winning the battle against infectious
diseases, other enemies were gathering strength. The first to be noticed -because they affected children -- were allergies and asthma.
pg 16 However, a new understanding of our immune system was taking hold
among immunologists. Apparently, the immune system not only protected
against disease; it could also cause disease.
pg 17 Its now clear that the number one job of the immune system is not to
combat germs. Rather, the purpose of the immune system is to allow us to
coexist with the microbes in and around us.

Page A-37

pg 17 Over the past several decades, as it became evident that the incidence of
asthma and allergies was rising in the United States, immunologists
struggled to find an explanation. One important clue was the fact that these
conditions were increasing dramatically in some parts of the world, yet
remaining low and stable in others. Statistics suggested a possible
connection to antibiotic use. But how were they linked?
pg 18 Normally, the population of C. albicans in the body is relatively small.
But because this yeast is antibiotic-resistant, it proliferates when other
microbes are destroyed by antibiotics.
pg 19 We already know, from our experiment and others, that destroying
probiotics in the intestines can activate the immune systems accelerator.
Preliminary research suggests that probiotics can slam on the brakes.
pg 20 But trying probiotics simply involved healthy dietary changes. How could
it hurt to eat yogurt daily, increase my intake of whole grains, consume
more fresh fruits and vegetables, jazz up my meals with spices, and add a
probiotic supplement.
pg 27 Collectively, the microbes we host are known as our microflora. Nearly
80 percent of them -- including all the ones important to the immune
system -- live in our intestines. The rest reside elsewhere in the digestive
tract, on the skin, and in the lungs, as well as in the female reproductive
tract. If a woman is breastfeeding, the milk-producing areas of her breasts
also contain microbes. Other parts of the body, such as the bones, heart,
kidneys, and other internal organs, are normally microbe-free -- unless
theyre infected.
pg 28 More than 99 percent of the microbes living in our intestines are bacteria,
a very diverse group, with 500 to 1,000 different species. The rest are
yeasts or parasites.

Appendix A
Book Quotes - April 18, 2011

Page A-38

pg 30 You already know that certain bacteria can cause disease in humans. They
can cause disease in plants, too. But the great majority of those that live in
soil perform positive -- and sometimes essential -- roles. For example, the
friendly bacteria in soil inhibit the growth of bacteria responsible for plant
diseases. They also decompose plant matter into simpler molecules that
plants can use for food or as nutrients. If youve ever had a working
compost heap in your garden, it was loaded with helpful bacteria.
pg 30 The major yeast of the human microflora is Candida albicans. If its
numbers are kept low by competition with other microbes, its harmless.
But if it proliferates, it can cause various illnesses, including diarrhea,
vaginal yeast infections, and thrush, an infection of the mouth thats
common in infants and in people taking antibiotics.
pg 30 Finally, even the healthiest among us are hosts to a few parasites -organisms that depend on us for food and shelter but that offer us nothing
in return. At best, theyre harmless. But parasites can be a significant cause
of disease, especially in the digestive tract.
pg 32 Healthy people have high levels of probiotic bacteria -- and the more, the
better. Probiotics protect us by competing with harmful microbes and by
helping the immune system function.
pg 32 Other microbes -- fortunately a small minority -- are the bad guys of the
microflora.
pg 33 The inside of your body consists of all the areas where your blood vessels
and internal organs lie: the liver, kidneys, brain, heart, etc. Your inside is
essentially microbe-free -- at least when youre healthy.
The bodys outside includes the skin. But you might be surprised to learn
that it also includes the lungs and upper airways, plus the tube that runs
right through the middle of us. This tube consists of the nose, sinuses,
upper airways, lungs, mouth, esophagus, stomach, small and large
intestines, rectum, and anus. Theyre considered outside because theyre
constantly exposed to the world around us. This exposure allows microbes
to enter our body via the food we eat, the fluids we drink, and the air we
inhale. Some of these microbes take up residence in the tube -- the vast
majority of them in the gut -- and become part of our microflora.

Appendix A
Book Quotes - April 18, 2011

Page A-39

pg 38 The microbial population of our digestive tract varies from place to place
along the tube. Different types of microbes predominate at each site, and
they serve different functions. In the upper part of the digestive tract,
probiotics mostly compete with harmful microbes; the same is true of the
lower end. This means that their impact is local. Probiotics in the
intestines, which can actually affect the immune system, are the most
important for overall well-being.
pg 81 First, probiotics promote a healthy gut -- one that isnt damaged. They do
this by producing antimicrobial compounds that destroy harmful microbes.
And they also crowd out the undesirables by competing with them for
nutrients. Second, probiotics can actually send all is well chemical
messages to the dendritic cells.
pg 87 Despite the fact that other evidence is preliminary or confusing, one
message is clear: we know that probiotics are safe. The fermented foods
that are rich in probiotics, such as yogurt, have been part of the human diet
for thousands of years.
pg 88 As I explained in chapter 4, theres a clear relationship between a
balanced microflora in the digestive tract and proper functioning of the
immune system. We know that probiotic bacteria can correct misguided
inflammatory responses, and we also know that such inflammatory
responses underlie many chronic diseases.
pg 90 At every stage of life -- from before birth to old age -- probiotics help us
remain healthy.
pg 93 In addition, some research has linked chronic stress to life-threatening
conditions like cardiovascular disease and cancer.
pg 94 Stress has the potential to tip our microfloral balance away from
probiotics -- which also affects the balance of regulatory versus helper T
cells. As a result, the immune system will regulate itself less effectively,
leading to increased inflammation in the body. Scientists already know that
some stress hormones can affect the immune system directly.
pg 94 Research suggests that probiotics can help counter stress.

pg 96 Based on our current knowledge, it seems likely that probiotics -especially Bifidobacteria -- could help. We know, for example, that
Bifidobacteria can stimulate peristalsis, the contraction of the intestinal
muscles that keep things moving. Fruits, vegetables, and whole grains -- all
high in fiber, a prebiotic that supports probiotics -- are often recommended
to pregnant women to counter constipation.
pg 97 Pregnant women are more vulnerable to these infections because of
hormone-related changes in the microflora. For example, yeast gets a
boost from estrogen, so it proliferates during pregnancy. Normally,
Lactobacillus keeps yeast in check. But thanks to extra estrogen, the yeast
are better able to compete.
pg 97 The womb is a sterile environment. In fact, should microbes invade it, the
mothers immune system response might cause premature labor.
pg 97 A newborn emerges into the world without a microflora.
pg 98 Babies born vaginally receive their first exposure to microbes during
delivery. The vaginal tract contains a microflora, including the probiotic
Lactobacillus, which enters the babys mouth and is swallowed.
pg 98 Breast milk contains several compounds that inhibit disease-causing
bacteria and promote probiotics. A breastfed babys gut microflora consists
mainly of Bacteroides and the probiotic Bifidobacteria. In contrast, the gut
microflora of a formula-fed baby has fewer of these microbes and a greater
array of other microbes, both beneficial and potentially harmful. While the
implications of this difference are not yet fully clear, most scientific
evidence suggests that infants whose microflora consists mainly of
probiotics have lower rates of allergies and asthma.
pg 100 But what really caught my attention in the Johns Hopkins study was this:
babies who consumed probiotic formula were significantly less likely to
have colic.
pg 102 Those with colic are less frequently colonized by Lactobacillus bacteria
and more likely to host non-probiotic bacteria. A long-term study by the
same group found that colicky infants were more vulnerable to allergies,
including allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, asthmatic bronchitis, hay fever,

atopic eczema, and food allergies. As Ill explain in more detail in Chapter
7, all of these conditions have microflora connections.
pg 103 Im sure Im not the only one who looks back and marvels at how
effortless it was to stay vigorous and healthy when I was in my teens,
twenties, and even thirties. People that age can neglect the basics -- diet,
exercise, sleep, -- and seemingly get away with it. But they may be running
up health debts that will come back to haunt them sooner or later.
pg 104 Over the years, our bodies change in many ways -- including the
composition of our gut microflora. The major differences, which begin in
midlife, involve a decrease in members of the probiotic Bifidobacterium
genus and in increase in E. coli and Clostridia. E. coli can perform useful
functions in the gut -- they help compete against harmful microbes; they
make certain vitamins that we absorb. On the other hand, if they leave the
GI tract, they can cause disease.
pg 268 Along the way, fiber performs extremely valuable functions. One of the
most important is that it serves as a prebiotic, selectively supporting
probiotic microbes in our gut.

Acid/Alkaline Balance
HP pg 9

The acid content of the blood must be reduced. This is the basis for
the therapeutic regimen outlined in the subsequent chapters of this
book.

HP pg 71

What is it about diet that is so vital to the psoriatic? It is the

importance of maintaining the proper acid-alkaline (base) balance of
the body's chemistry.

HP pg 71

For the preservation of good health, nature demands that the body
remain more on the alkaline side than on the acid side. The body
becomes more resistant to all types of disease and physical ailments
when engulfed in an internal chemical atmosphere that is alkaline.

HP pg 71

A persons blood should always be slightly alkaline, with a pH of 7.3

to 7.5 in chemical reaction, to maintain the optimum in general health
and immunity.

HP pg 73

All foods are either alkaline forming, acid forming, or neutral. The
alkaline formers are the lighter, watery-type foods that are more easily
digested, such as fruits and vegetables. The acid formers are the
heavier, protein foods, such as meats and grains, which require greater
breakdown for proper digestion and absorption. The neutrals are the
dairy products, such as milk, yogurt, and kefir.

HP pg 77

Psoriasis is one of those diseases in which there is a decided shift in

the body chemistry to the acid side.

pHM pg 12 For one thing, it is only when it is acidic is the body then vulnerable
to germs -- in healthy base balance, germs cant get a foothold.
Furthermore, acids are the expression of all sickness and disease, as
well as of dis-ease. In short, good health requires a body in proper
acid/base balance.
pHM pg 12 Just as our body temperature must be maintained at 98.6 degrees
Fahrenheit, our blood is ideally maintained at 7.365 pH -- very mildly
basic.
pHM pg 13 Our bodies cannot tolerate extended acid imbalances.
pHM pg 13 In the early stages of the imbalance, the symptoms may not be very
intense and include such things as skin eruptions, headaches, allergies,
colds and flu, and sinus problems.
pHM pg 14 For example, the body may throw off acids through the skin,
producing symptoms such as eczema, acne, boils, headaches, muscle
cramps, soreness, swelling, irritation, inflammation, and general aches
and pains. Chronic symptoms show up when all possibilities of
neutralizing or eliminating acids have been exhausted.
pHM pg 18 When your body goes from acid back to base, bacteria, yeast, fungus,
and mold stop developing and can once again become benign. Their
leftover toxins can then be bound up by certain fats and alkaline
minerals and eliminated from the body.

Bentonite
CYI pg 45 Bentonite is said to absorb up to 180 times its own weight in
bacteria, toxic debris, and even parasites . . .
CYI pg 45 Bentonite absorbs the harmful toxins produced by fungi, bacteria,
and worms and flushes them out of the body.
CYI pg 79 Bentonite, a volcanic ash found in the Black Hills of South Dakota,
is an inert mineral silicate. When processed into a very fine powder
and suspended in distilled water, bentonite absorbs (acts like a magnet

Appendix B

pulling toxins to it) intestinal waste products without being absorbed

into the system. It just passes through the intestinal tract attaching the
toxins to itself.
CYI pg 79 Because bentonite itself is not absorbed into the body, whatever it
absorbs is removed in the feces. Bentonite provides an excellent
vehicle for removing miscellaneous intestinal poisons and toxins
generated by Candida albicans.

Cause
HP pg 4

For psoriasis to occur, the walls in certain areas of the intestinal tract
must become thin and porous. When this happens, toxic substances
that should normally pass through the intestines and eventually be
eliminated by the body seep through these walls, enter the lymphatic
system, and invade the bloodstream.

HP pg 4

When the liver, the major filtering gland of the body, is overloaded,
the skin comes to the rescue and helps to eliminate toxins.

HP pg 6

The Leaky Gut Syndrome is the name given to a very common

health disorder in which the basic organic defect (lesion) is an
intestinal lining which is more permeable (porous) than normal.

HP pg 6

The gut becomes leaky in the sense that bacteria, fungi, parasites,
and their toxins, undigested protein, fat and waste, normally not
absorbed into the bloodstream in the healthy state, pass through a
damaged, hyperpermeable, porous or leaky gut.

CYI pg 10 Another dietary factor is the regular consumption of poultry, meat,

and milk. The animals from which we get these products have been
treated with antibiotics and hormones that are then passed on to the
consumer of the meat or milk, thus destroying good bacteria in the gut
of the consumer.
CYI pg 10 Low bulk, highly-refined carbohydrate diets also help establish a
breeding ground for yeast.

Appendix B
Specific Topics - April 18, 2011

Page B-5

CYI pg 11 Actually, there are two types of CRC. The first is intestinal and is
mainly a result of the food we eat. The second is respiratory and is
produced by contact with pollen of weeds, grasses and trees, house
dust, and animal dander. Thus, CRC is caused by either diet or
environment.
pHM 16

Bacteria, yeast, fungus, and mold do not themselves produce

symptoms in the body -- their toxic wastes do.

Colon
HP pg 37

It is impossible to overemphasize the importance of paying close

attention to the colon and its proper functioning.

Some people call this leaking of toxins into
the blood stream the leaky gut syndrome.
The second is by passing through the intestinal wall.

CYI pg 5

In CRC, one of the first systems to be compromised is the immune

system. It forces the immune system to focus on the digestive tract,
the source of CRC.

TPR pg 4

Probiotics protect us in two ways, one is to compete successfully

with potentially harmful microbes in our digestive tract, also known
as the gut.

Diet
HP pg 70

A psoriatic must fully accept and understand that the consumption or

avoidance of certain foods is vital to his recovery from this
dermatological problem.

HP pg 71

What is it about diet that is so vital to the psoriatic? It is the

importance of maintaining the proper acid-alkaline (base) balance of
the body's chemistry.

HP pg 271 The alleviation, control, healing, and regeneration of the surface cells
(your skin) depend on two factors, primarily: (1) ensuring adequate
drainage of toxins through normal channels of elimination, namely
your bowls and kidneys, and (2) not polluting the body further by
ingesting elements destructive to the gut wall, achieved by following a
carefully selective diet.
CYI pg 10 A study reported in the 1988 CRC Update compared five Candida
diets. At the top of each list was a restriction against consumption of
refined sugar. This food item feeds the fungi allowing them to
proliferate; it is addictive and over-consumption is the norm: it causes
an imbalance in acid/alkaline levels, wreaks havoc with the sugar/
insulin blood ratio (causing physical stress), and increases the physical
need for vitamins and minerals.
CYI pg 118 On the other hand, complex carbohydrates are helpful in keeping
CRC in check. The bulk from these foods provide fiber needed to
stimulate the peristaltic action of the intestine. Peristalsis is the
contraction of the intestine, occurring in waves, which propel the
intestinal contents onward.

Page B-7

pHM pg 59 Acidity in the stomach and colon varies depending on the food you
eat. High-water content, low-sugar foods, like those recommended in
the program, cause less acidity. High-sugar and high-protein foods
increase acidity.
pHM pg 65 In general, animal foods -- meat, eggs, dairy -- processed and refined
foods, yeast products, fermented foods, grains, artificial sweeteners,
sweet fruit, and natural and artificial sugars are acidifying, as are
alcohol, coffee, chocolate, black tea, and sodas. Vegetables, on the
other hand, are alkalizing. That includes a few that are technically
fruits: avocado, tomato, cucumber, bell pepper. A few nonsweet citrus
fruits, such as grapefruit, lemon, and lime are also basic in the body,
as are sprouted seeds, nuts, and grains. Grains are acidifying, though a
few (millet, buckwheat, and spelt) are only very mildly so. Raw foods
are more alkalizing, while cooked food is more acidifying.
pHM pg 67 Vegetables are also an excellent source of the alkaline salts that
protect against microform overgrowth and the associated mycotoxins,
as well as helping to neutralize metabolic and dietary acids in the
blood and tissues.
pHM pg 68 Vegetables are loaded with the fiber that is crucial to your diet.
Besides the accepted benefits of fiber in reducing cancer and other
serious health concerns, studies have shown that fiber markedly
decreases mycotoxicity. Fiber acts like a sponge, soaking up acids
from the body. It also works like a broom, cleaning out the
intestines.
pHM pg 101 Sugar feeds biological transformation like gasoline feeds a fire.
TPR pg 4

Insufficiencies of probiotics can be corrected by the consumption of

certain healthy foods and by taking some carefully selected nutritional
supplements.

Besides the accepted benefits of fiber in reducing cancer and other
serious health concerns, studies have shown that fiber markedly
decreases mycotoxicity. Fiber acts like a sponge, soaking up acids
from the body. It also works like a broom, cleaning out the

TPR pg 97 Fruits, vegetables, and whole grains -- all high in fiber, a prebiotic
that supports probiotics -- are often recommended to pregnant women
to counter constipation.
TPR pg 268 Along the way, fiber performs extremely valuable functions. One of
the most important is that it serves as a prebiotic, selectively
supporting probiotic microbes in our gut.

Immune System
CYI pg 5

In CRC, one of the first systems to be compromised is the immune

system. It forces the immune system to focus on the digestive tract,
the source of CRC.

TPR pg 4

Probiotics are vital for the Immune System, too. They actually send
signals to the immune system that reduce destructive overreactions,
including inflammation. This means that insufficiencies affect
immune responses - and therefore every aspect of our health.

TPR pg 5

Perhaps even more important, probiotics help the immune system to

function properly. Our immune system acts like a police force,
protecting us from germs. But if it overreacts, it can be the cause of
disease rather than the cure. A trigger-happy immune system may
discharge its potent weapons against harmless substances -- dust, cat
dander, eggs, peanuts -- thereby producing allergic responses.

TPR pg 5

An unrestrained immune system can even turn against our own cells,
causing autoimmune disorders such as ulcerative colitis, Chrohns
disease, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Appendix B
Specific Topics - April 18, 2011

Page B-9

TPR pg 9

Autoimmune diseases are among the most baffling and disabling of

conditions. Weve identified more than eighty such diseases,
including rheumatoid arthritis, type 1 diabetes, lupus, and psoriasis.
These conditions are caused not by some external enemy, but by our
own immune system.

TPR pg 9

Probiotic bacteria have enormous potential to help, because they

signal the immune system to show restraint.

TPR pg 16 However, a new understanding of our immune system was taking

hold among immunologists. Apparently, the immune system not only
protected against disease; it could also cause disease.
TPR pg 17 Its now clear that the number one job of the immune system is not to
combat germs. Rather, the purpose of the immune system is to allow
us to coexist with the microbes in and around us.
TPR pg 88 There is a clear relationship between a balanced microflora in the
digestive tract and proper functioning of the immune system. We
know that probiotic bacteria can correct misguided inflammatory
responses, and we also know that such inflammatory responses
underlie many chronic diseases.

Internal Toxins
HP pg 6

The gut becomes leaky in the sense that bacteria, fungi, parasites,
and their toxins, undigested protein, fat and waste, normally not
absorbed into the bloodstream in the healthy state, pass through a
damaged, hyperpermeable, porous or leaky gut.

HP pg 10

Remove the fungal yeast buildup and the gut will heal, preventing
further leakage into the blood. This is best done by avoiding the foods
that basically caused the problem -- too many carbohydrates and
sugars -- and instead consume foods that help correct the problem -olive oil and garlic, as well as plain organic yogurt with live cultures
-- and the chances of recovery are greatly enhanced.

pHM pg 15 Dietary and metabolic acid waste also set the stage for the potentially
devastating development of a host of microscopic organisms in your
body, starting with Candida.
pHM pg 16 Bacteria, yeast, fungus, and mold do not themselves produce
symptoms in the body -- their toxic wastes do.

Leaky Gut

system of the intestines. Some people call this leaking of toxins into
the blood stream the leaky gut syndrome.
The second is by passing through the intestinal wall.

Overgrowth
CYI pg 5

The balance between bacteria normally in the gut and/or vaginal

flora and fungus is disrupted when the bacteria become weakened and
the fungi become too strong. As a result of this imbalance, the
Candida albicans can rapidly multiply and cause an overgrowth.

pHM pg 15 For example, Candida is normally found in the gastrointestinal tract

due to the breakdown of food matter. (Wed actually die without it.)
However, it can easily become drastically overgrown, causing a wide
variety of symptoms, from annoying to chronic to fatal.
pHM pg 31 Cravings for acid food such as sugar, outsize appetites, and low
blood sugar levels all follow dietary and metabolic acids and an
overgrowth of harmful bacteria, yeast, fungus, and mold in the body,
which then create even more acidic wastes.

Prebiotics
TPR pg 5

Prebiotics strengthen probiotics.

TPR pg 97 Fruits, vegetables, and whole grains -- all high in fiber, a prebiotic
that supports probiotics -- are often recommended to pregnant women
to counter constipation.

Probiotics
pHM pg 54 Youve probably run across recommendations for digestive enzymes
and/or probiotics to improve the health of your digestive tract. In fact,
I used to recommend them myself. But through live and dried blood
analysis, my understanding has evolved, and now I want to emphasize

Appendix B

the negative consequences of these supplements, and warn you to

steer clear of them on your path to an alkaline lifestyle.
pHM pg 55 Enzymes and probiotics are a bit more complicated, because they
may seemingly be beneficial in the short term.
TPR pg 4

Probiotics are vital for the Immune System, too. They actually send
signals to the immune system that reduce destructive overreactions,
including inflammation. This means that insufficiencies affect
immune responses - and therefore every aspect of our health.

TPR pg 5

Prebiotics strengthen probiotics.

TPR pg 7

Probiotics are now used to prevent or treat diarrhea due to antibiotic

treatment, infections, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or the
unfamiliar microbes encountered in foreign travel.

TPR pg 8

Most yeast infections are caused by Candida albicans, a yeast thats

normally kept in check by the probiotic Lactobacillus and other
microbes that live in our intestines.

TPR pg 9

Probiotic bacteria have enormous potential to help, because they

signal the immune system to show restraint.

TPR pg 87 Despite the fact that other evidence is preliminary or confusing, one
message is clear: we know that probiotics are safe. The fermented
foods that are rich in probiotics, such as yogurt, have been part of the
human diet for thousands of years.
TPR pg 88 There is a clear relationship between a balanced microflora in the
digestive tract and proper functioning of the immune system. We
know that probiotic bacteria can correct misguided inflammatory

TPR pg 90 At every stage of life -- from before birth to old age -- probiotics help
us remain healthy.

Psyllium
CYI pg 45 Psyllium acts like a broom to help eliminate stagnant waste in the
gut.
CYI pg 45 Psyllium is an intestinal cleanser.
CYI pg 78 Psyllium is a plant grown commercially in India and its husk is used
as a bulk-forming laxative in numerous products. These husks expand
when mixed with liquid, creating a roughage like gelled substance.
The expanding bulk cleans out the pockets lining the colon wall.

Repair
HP pg 7

The good news is that the repair and regeneration of these walls is
well within the reach of the average person, for the inner lumen (wall)
that forms the barrier that prevents undesirable elements from seeping
through is normally renewed and regenerated every six days -provided, of course, that consumption of irritants is halted and other
beneficial substances are introduced.

HP pg 36

In the case of psoriasis, the first condition to correct is the

accumulated pollution that has infected the entire blood stream and,
subsequently, all the organs and cells of the body.

HP pg 271 The alleviation, control, healing, and regeneration of the surface cells
(your skin) depend on two factors, primarily: (1) ensuring adequate
drainage of toxins through normal channels of elimination, namely

CYI pg 45 Psyllium is an intestinal cleanser. Bentonite absorbs the harmful

toxins produced by fungi, bacteria, and worms and flushes them out of
the body. The combination of these two products are a great aid in
eliminating toxins from the intestinal tract.
CYI pg 46 Clearing the intestinal tract of parasites and keeping the body free of
their return can be done with natural remedies including: caprylic acid
(liquid form works best), psyllium, bentonite, friendly flora,
Echinacea (an immune-boosting herb), vitamins and minerals, proper
rest, food, and exercise.
CYI pg 74 The colon cleansing program consists of fungicides, intestinal
cleaners, and friendly bacteria. This program expels CRC from the
intestines, allowing the immune system to spring back and clean up
CRC elsewhere in the body.

Skin

the skin comes to the rescue and helps to eliminate toxins.

Symptoms
CYI pg 10 Candida albicans feeds on sugar and foods baked with yeast. People
with CRC develop a craving for sweets, often describing an insatiable
urge to eat sugar or bread or drink beer or other alcoholic beverages.
Many sufferers attribute this to poor self control and often have shame
and guilt associated with this craving and binging. What many people
do not realize is that their cravings are caused by the yeast they are
harboring which is begging to be fed.
CYI pg 14 One of the most prominent symptoms caused by CRC is intense
cravings for sweets, breads, and cheeses.
CYI pg 15 Cravings for alcoholic beverages such as beer and wine are another
clue.
CYI pg 15 These cravings are frequent and intense. Many patients are
convinced there is something terribly wrong with them
psychologically or behaviorally and they often have greatly
diminished self-esteem.

Yeast
CYI pg 4

In healthy individuals, Candida albicans occurs in small colonies and

coexists with beneficial microbes or bacteria. The presence of yeast
and bacteria in controlled balance does not cause any problems.

CYI pg 5

This spread of Candida albicans has been described as a domino

effect-one body system after another falls prey to CRC, unless it is
stopped or reversed.

pHM pg 15 Dietary and metabolic acid waste also set the stage for the potentially
devastating development of a host of microscopic organisms in your
body, starting with Candida.

pHM pg 16 Candida and other microforms take advantage of the bodys weaker
areas, poisoning and overworking them.
TPR pg 8

Most yeast infections are caused by Candida albicans, a yeast thats

normally kept in check by the probiotic Lactobacillus and other
microbes that live in our intestines.

TPR pg 18 Normally, the population of Candida albicans in the body is

relatively small. But because this yeast is antibiotic-resistant, it
proliferates when other microbes are destroyed by antibiotics.
TPR pg 30 The major yeast of the human microflora is Candida albicans. If its
numbers are kept low by competition with other microbes, it is
harmless. But if it proliferates, it can cause various illnesses,
including diarrhea, vaginal yeast infections, and thrush, an infection of
the mouth thats common in infants and in people taking antibiotics.

Supplies for the Colon-cleansing Program

I have been purchasing the supplements for the colon-cleansing program
from the East-West Clinic. This clinic is run by the author of Conquering Yeast
Infections, S. Colet Lahoz.
The instructions for mixing and use of the colon-cleansing program can be
found in Chapter 9 of Ms. Lahozs book. Ms. Lahozs book can be purchased from
the clinic. The clinics web site is: www.eastwest-mn.com .
The Bentonite and Caprol are both contained in a pre-mixed liquid. The
Psyllium is a powder and the probiotics are contained in capsules. All are as
described in Ms. Lahozs book.
