ASSISTANT'S GRADE EXAMINATION

Purpose
The aim of the Assistants' Grade Examination is to recruit candidates for various Indian Government positions:

1. Grade IV Assistant of the General Cadre of the Indian Foreign Services B

2. Grade II Cypher Assistant of Cypher Cadre of Indian Foreign Service Branch B
3. Assistants' Grade of the Railway Board Secretariat Service
4. Assistants' Grade of the Central Secretariat Service
5. Assistants' Grade of the Armed Forces Headquarters Civil Service; and Posts of Assistants in other Departments /
Organizations and the Attached Offices of the Government of India, not participating in IFS (B)/Railway Board
Secretariat Service/ Central Secretariat Service/Armed Forces Headquarters Civil Services.

Important Dates
• September: Blank application forms are published in Employment News.
• First week of October: Last date for submission of applications.
• January: Preliminary Examination
• July: Main Examination.

Eligibility
• Degree from a recognized University or equivalent
• At least 20 years old and not more than 24 years old on the first day of August in the year before the exam.
• The upper age limit may be relaxed for people of respect of backward caste, tribe etc.
• The upper age limit is also relaxed to 30 years in respect of LDCs/UDCs, Stenographers Grade 'D' and Grade III with not
less than 3 years continuous and regular service in various departments/offices of Government of India.

Preliminary Examination
The Preliminary examination is designed to for test takers to prove they are capable of taking the Main Examination. The
total score is out of 300 marks which consists of the following subjects:

1. Reasoning Ability - 75 marks (75 Questions)

2. General Awareness - 75 marks (75 Questions)
3. Arithmetic - 75 marks (75 Questions)
4. Language Paper - 75 marks (75 Questions)
• Type: The papers in all the subjects will be of objective type.
• Language: Question papers will be set both in English and Hindi.
Part (IV) Language paper will be of qualifying nature and the marks secured by the candidates in this part will not be
counted for the preparation of the list of candidates to be called for the main examination. The aggregate marks secured in
Part (I), (II) and (III) will be taken for preparation of the list of candidates to be called for Main Examination.

The Commission has the discretion to fix minimum qualifying standard in any of the four parts of the Preliminary
Examination.

Syllabus for Preliminary Examination

This is of multiple choice questions type.

1. Reasoning Ability Syllabus

Questions in the Test of Reasoning Ability will be Non-Verbal and Verbal both. Of the 75 items, 25 items will be of Non-
Verbal based on Classification, Analogy and Series, etc. The remaining 50 items will be of Verbal Type based on
Letter/Number series, Letter/Number/Word Analogy, Number/Letter/Word Classification, Coding and Decoding, Problem
Solving/Finding the Rule, Spatial Orientation/Special Visualization, Statement Conclusion/Syllogistic Reasoning.

2. General Awareness Syllabus

Questions in this test will aim at measuring knowledge of current events besides knowledge of General Science/Social
Science and their application to the society. This test will also include questions on Sports, Culture, History, Geography,
General Polity, etc. These questions will be such that they do not require a special study of any discipline.

3. Arithmetic Syllabus
This test will include questions on problems relating to Number Systems, Percentages, Ratio and Proportion, Averages,
Estimation, Use of Tables and Graphs, Mensuration, Time and Distance, Ratio and Time etc.

5. Language Test
Questions in this test will be based on error recognition, fill in the blanks (using Verbs, Prepositions, Articles, etc.),
vocabulary, spellings, sequence of sentences in a paragraph, sequence of words in a sentence, cloze passage and
comprehension passages, etc. Synonyms and antonyms will be asked in the context of the given passage.

Main Examination
Main exam is of conventional type (300 Marks) and will consist of the following papers:

Paper I: Language Comprehension (3 hours)

1. General English - 50 Marks
2. Communication/Writing Skills - 150 Marks

General English: In addition to the testing of candidates understanding of the English Language and its correct usage, his
writing ability would also be tested. A question on paragraph writing/report writing etc. may also be included.

Communication/Writing Skills: In addition to the testing of candidate's ability to understand correct English/Hindi
Language, his comprehension and writing ability would also be tested. Questions on Precise, Short Essay, Letter Writing
etc., would also be included.

Paper II: Arithmetic (2 hours)

The Maximum Marks are 100. The question papers for the Main Examination will be of Conventional (Essay) Type.
Paper II: Arithmetic Syllabus: Simplifications involving Decimal Fractions, Ratio and Proportion, Percentages, Average,
Profit and Loss, Discount, Simple and Compound Interest, Graphical Representation of Data, Reading of Linear Graphs
and Tabulation of Data.

In Paper I, Part (a) of Main Examination will be compulsory for all the candidates. However, this will be of a qualifying
nature. The marks secured in this part will not be counted for preparation of the final selection list. The Commission have
the discretion to fix a qualifying standard in this part.

Candidates will have the option to answer Paper I Part (b) (Communication/Writing Skill) and Paper II (Arithmetic) either
in Hindi or in English.

Scripts of Paper I Part (b) (Communication/Writing Skill) and Paper II (Arithmetic) will be evaluated of only those
candidates who secure minimum qualifying standard in Part (a) of Paper I of the Main Examination.

3. Arithmetic Syllabus
This part will include questions on problems relating to number systems, computation of whole numbers, decimals and fractions and
relationships between numbers, fundamental arithmetical operations, percentages, ratio and proportion, averages, interest, profit & loss,
discount, use of table and graphs, menstruation, time & distance, ratio and time etc.

Purpose
The aim of the Combined Matric Preliminary Exam is to select candidates for the following positions:

DELHI POLICE SUB-INSPECTORS' EXAM

Purpose
The aim of the Delhi Police Sub-Inspectors' Examination is to recruit candidates for Sub-Inspectors' in Delhi Police.

DISTRICT SAVING OFFICERS EXAMINATION

 Purpose
The aim of the District Savings Officers Examination is to recruit candidates for the posts in the office of the National Savings Commissioner.

Eligibility

Exam Plan

EXAMINATION
Purpose
The aim of the Divisional Accountants / Auditors / U.D.C. Examination is to recruit candidates for following positions:

1. Divisional Accountants in the various Offices of Accountants General (A & E) under Comptroller and Auditor General of

2. Auditors' in the Offices of the Accountant General (Audit) in various States and other Audit and Accounts Offices under the

• A candidate must hold degree of a recognized University or its equivalent.

• A candidate must have attained the age of 18 years and must not have attained the age of 25 years on the 1st January of the year of
examination. The upper age is relaxable in respect of Scheduled Castes/ Scheduled Tribes, Departmental Candidates and such other
categories of persons as may be decided from time to time.

Exam Plan
The subjects of the examination, the time allowed and the maximum marks for each subject will be as follows:

INCOME TAX & CENTRAL EXCISE INSPECTORS EXAM

Purpose
The Staff Selection Commission of India conducts every year, the Income Tax / Central Excise Inspectors' Examination to recruit the
following personnel to appoint in the under mentioned Indian Government offices/services:

1. Assistant Enforcement Officers in the Directorate of Enforcement (FERA)

2. Examiner (Ordinary Grade) in Custom House at Mumbai, Kolkatta, Goa, Cochin, Chennai and Vishakhapatnam
3. Inspectors' of Central Excise in different Collectorates of Central Excise
4. Inspector of Income Tax in different charges of the Commissioner of Income-Tax

Examination Plan:
The examination will be conducted in two parts:
A. Part I Written Examination: 300 marks
B. Part II Skill Test.
A. Part I: Written Examination:
The Examination will consist of two Papers I and II. Paper I will be Objective Type Multiple Choice whereas Paper II will be of
Conventional Type.
Paper I consists of Part A - General English & Part B - General Awareness. Both are 100 marks each. Paper II - Arithmetic is also of 100
marks. Both papers are 2 hours duration.
Paper II (Conventional Paper) will be evaluated in respect of only those candidates who qualify in Paper I at the minimum standard
which may be decided by the Commission at its discretion.
B. Part II: SKILL TEST
Data Entry Speed of 8000 Key Depressions per hour (appropriate to the text) on computer. This Data Entry Speed/Skill Test would be of
qualifying nature. Candidates allowed to take this test will have to qualify the test at the prescribed speed on Computer, to be provided by
the Commission or agency authorized by the Commission to conduct such skill test at the Centre/venue so notified.
NOTE I:
The Skill Test will be conducted by an agency duly authorized by the Commission for the purpose, under the supervision and control of
Commission.
NOTE II:
Only those candidates who secure in the written examination the minimum qualifying marks as may be fixed by the Commission at its
 discretion, will only be eligible to appear in the SKILL TEST. The SKILL TEST will be held at the Commission’s Regional Offices or
other Centres as may be decided by the Commission.

INVESTIGATORS EXAM
Purpose
This Examination is held by Staff Selection Commission for the recruitment of Investigators in National Sample Organization - Field
Operations Division and Ministry of Planning of the Indian Government.

Eligibility
Educational Qualification - Degree with Mathematics or Statistics or Economics as a subject from a recognized University.
Candidates having Honours Degree should have Mathematics or Statistics or Economics as a main subject and not as a subsidiary
subject. Desirable

• Ability to read, write and speak the state language.

• Knowledge of other regional languages.
• capability to undertake strenuous outdoor work.

Age - 20-28 years as on August of the year of examination. Age concession is according to rules and regulations of the Government
of India.
 Nationality - A candidate must be either

to him by the Government of India.

precisely and effectively.

Paper-II
• Translation and Essay (Conventional type)

This Paper will contain two passages for translation- one passage for translation from Hindi to English and one passage for translation
from English to Hindi, and an Essay each in Hindi & English which will test the candidates' translation skills and their ability to write the
two languages correctly, precisely and effectively.
Note:
Sometimes, the Staff Selection Commission also holds similar type of examination for recruitment to the posts of Junior Hindi
Translators in the Subordinate Offices of Government of India located all over the country. However there is some difference in scale of
pay as well as other eligibility conditions, particularly the educational qualifications though the Scheme of Examination for this
Examination is almost similar. Thus the applicants should not get confused and must go through the Notice of Examination issued by the
Commission very carefully.

awareness/knowledge, depth of knowledge of the subjects studied (10+2 onwards), communicative skills and over-all personality etc.

Syllabus
Paper I: General Studies:

1. General Intelligence and Reasoning: It would include questions of both verbal and non verbal type. The test will include
questions on analogies, similarities, and differences, space visualization problem solving analysis judgment, decision making
visual memory discriminating observation, relationship concepts, arithmetical reasoning verbal and figure classification
arithmetical number series non-verbal series etc. The test will also include questions designed to test the candidates' ability to
deal with abstract ideas and symbols and their relationships, arithmetical computations and other analytical functions.
2. General Awareness: Questions will be aimed to test the candidate’s general awareness of the environment around him and its
application to society. Questions will also be designed to test knowledge of current events and of such matters of every day
observation and experience in their scientific aspects as may be expected of any educated person. The test will also include
questions relating to India and its neighbouring countries especially pertaining to History, Culture, Geography, economic scene,
General polity and scientific research.
3. Numerical Ability: The questions will be designed to test the ability of appropriate use of numbers and number sense of the
candidate. The scope of the test will be the computation of whole numbers, decimals and fractions and relationship between
numbers, decimals and fractions, and relationships between numbers, It will test sense of order of magnitude, estimation or
prediction for the solution to real life problems and knowledge of alternative computation procedure to find answers.

Paper- II GENERAL ENGLISH:

The candidates will be mainly tested in the following areas:-

1. Simple and plain use of English Language and clarity of expression.

2. Effective Communication skill in English with due economy of words.

Questions will be designed to test the candidate’s understanding and working knowledge of English language, their comprehension and
their ability at communication skill. There will also be questions on précis writing, letter writing, paragraph or report writing etc.

SALT INSPECTORS EXAMINATION

Purpose
 The aim of this examination is to select candidates for positions in the office of the Salt Commissioner.

Eligibility
• Degree with Chemistry as the primary subject.
• Age - 18-25 years.

Part I: One paper (Objective type); 200 marks
• General Awareness
• Chemistry.

Part II: Personality Test (100 marks).

STENOGRAPHERS GRADE 'C' EXAMINATION

Purpose
The aim of the Stenographers' Examination is to select candidates for the following positions:

• Central Secretariat Stenographers' Service-Grade C (for inclusion in the Select List of the Grade);
• Railway Board Secretariat Stenographers' Service Grade C (for inclusion in the Select List of the Grade);
• Indian Foreign Service (B)-Grade II of the Stenographers' Cadre;
• Armed Forces Headquarters Stenographers' Service Grade C;
• Posts of Stenographers in other departments/ organizations Attached Offices of the Govt. of India not participating in above services.

Eligibility
• A candidate should have passed Matriculation Examination or equivalent or higher examination from a recognized University or
Educational Board.
• Age - A candidate must have attained the age of 18 years and must not have attained the age of 25 years on the first day of the
January of the year in which the examination is held.
The upper age may be relaxed in respect of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes and such other
categories of persons as may from time to time be notified in this behalf by the Government of India to the extent and subject to the
conditions, notified in respect of category.

Examination Plan
The examination comprises:

1. A written test in the subjects as set out in Para 6 below; and

 2. Shorthand Tests in Hindi or in English for those who qualify at the written test.

Castes and the Scheduled Tribes and certain other categories of persons according to orders in force.

Examination Plan
The examination will consist of two parts:

• Part I: Written Examination in the subject, as set out in 7 below, and

• art II: Stenography Test.

Written Examination:
The subjects of the written examination, the time allowed and the maximum marks for each subject will be as follows:

• General Awareness - (Max. Marks - 100, Time allowed - 2 hours)

• Language Test - (Max. Marks - 100)

There is a single paper for both the subjects of the Objective multiple Choice Type questions. Candidates are required to qualify in
each of the two subjects separately.
The Commission has full discretion to fix the minimum qualifying marks in either or both the subjects. Only such candidates who
attain, in each of the two subjects of the Written Examination, a minimum standard, as may be fixed by the Commission in their
discretion, are eligible to take the Shorthand Test (Part II of the Examination).
The candidates will have option to answer the language test either in Hindi or in English. The candidates who opt for Hindi medium
in shorthand are required to take the language test in Hindi only and candidates opting for English shorthand are required to take the
language test in English.

Standard of the Examination:

The standard of the questions is approximately that of the Matriculation Examination of an Indian University.

TRANSMISSION EXECUTIVES EXAMINATION

Purpose
This examination is held once a year generally in the month of May for recruitment to the posts of Transmission Executives in All-India
Radio/Doordarshan.

Important Dates
The blank application forms and other particulars are published in the Employment News in the month of January. The last date for the
 submission of application is usually 4th week of February.

Eligibility
Educational Qualifications:
Essential:

1. Degree of a recognized University or equivalent qualification or a Diploma from National School of Drama, New Delhi or
Diploma from the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune or a Diploma in Sound Broadcasting.
2. Proficiency in the language relevant to the vacancy.

Desirable:

1. Acquaintance with the culture, traditions and literature of the area concerned.
2. Knowledge of National and International Affairs.
3. Record of literacy or dramatic or debating or musical achievements or publications on literacy or scientific subjects.
4. Knowledge of other languages of the area concerned.
