Paying Down Debt

Current economic times are challenging and most
people need every dollar they earn. They look forward to
pay day, a rewarding day when they see what has come
from all those days of work. Then, they start paying bills
and suddenly pay day becomes a day they would rather
forget. In many cases, the money is going out faster than
it is coming in. Wouldn’t it be nice if the money we
earned could be used for something fun instead of the
debt we already have? If that is ever going to happen, we
must pay off our debt.
First, let’s take a look at our plastic friend, the credit
card. We have all heard from some financial analyst on
TV that we must pay more than the minimum on our
credit card bill. This person is right. Paying the minimum,
which is usually about two or three percent, only prolongs
the pain. Plus, this is what the credit card company wants.
The longer you take to repay the charges, the more
interest they can tack on. Don’t let them win...find the
money. Sacrifice it from somewhere else and pay as much
as you can each month. Brown bag it, instead of eating
lunch out. Don’t go bowling with the guys or out with the
girls. We all enjoy some luxuries. Sacrifice them for a
while. It won’t be fun, but it will beat watching the money
go out as soon as it comes in.
Roll your debt, using the snowball principal. The basic
idea here is to transfer your debt onto a lower-interest
credit card. Another idea, which takes some thought and
math skills, is to take advantage of promotional offers.
Some credit card companies will try to entice you with an
opportunity to move all of your debt onto their card for a
much lower interest rate, usually for a limited time. Get
out your abacus and figure out if the money you could
save would be worth it. Make sure you consider the
interest rate after the promotion period. Will it be higher
than the rate you are paying now? Read the fine print and
understand what you are getting into. If the math adds up
and you can live with the stipulations, consider doing it.
Consider using your savings. Again, it’s a question of
mathematics. Figure how much money you are losing to
interest on your debt. Are you making that much or more
in interest on your savings...probably not? Would it be
worth it to use your savings to pay off your debt? Do the
math.
Can friends and family help? Be careful! This one is a
slippery slope. These people love you and, if they can,

they will try to work something out before they take the
chance of no payment at all. The worst they can do is say
no.
Debt is not a pleasant thing, but for most people, it’s a
way of life. There are many ways to pay off debt; they
just take some work and sometimes creativity. If paying
off debt will make your life easier and help you sleep
better, isn’t it worth giving a shot?
Sales Taxes on Cars
Deductible for 2009
The “cash for clunkers” program may be history, but
you can still get a special deduction from the IRS if you
purchased a new car before the end of the year. A
provision in the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act
of 2009 (ARRA) allows a deduction for state and local
sales and excise taxes imposed on a car purchase. The
deduction is limited to the sales and excise taxes and
similar fees paid on up to $49,500 of the purchase price of
a new vehicle. You can take this deduction even if you do
not itemize your deductions. However, it is subject to
income limits, so you have to make under $125,000 as an
individual, or $250,000 if you are married filing jointly to
claim the full tax benefit.

Don’t Panic

You file your tax return online and wait for
acknowledgement. It comes, but instead of being
accepted, your return is rejected. What on earth are you
going to do now? First off, don’t panic. There could be
any number of reasons why your return was rejected. In
simple cases involving a misspelled name or mistyped
birthdate, the problem can be easily fixed and the return
sent back electronically. In more complicated cases, such
as a person including a dependent of yours on their tax
return, you may have to file a paper return.
For the best results, you should review your tax
return carefully before submitting it online. All of the
information on the return must match the information
found in the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) master file.
Here are some common mistakes you should avoid
• Using zeros in place of the letter “o” or vice versa.
• Mistyping social security numbers or using invalid
ones.
• Mistyping birthdates, entering them in the incorrect
format or using invalid ones.
• Using names that have not been updated to reflect a
divorce or marriage. (You should use the name that
appears on your tax return mailing label if you haven’t yet
updated your name.)
• Using special characters or numbers in names or
fields.
• Using Roman numerals only.
• Using invalid employer ID numbers or including
special characters like dashes in them.
• Using invalid state abbreviation codes and ZIP
codes.
• Using invalid employer identification numbers.
• Depositing your refund into someone else’s
account. (Only one tax refund can be deposited into an
account and the name on the account must be that of the

Addicted To Spending

Addiction is an excessive behavior that negatively
affects life. It can come in many forms, with drugs and
alcohol being the most common. Other forms include
overeating and gambling. Some people joke about being a
shopaholic, but this, too, is a serious addiction.
Compulsive shopping affects millions of men and
women, and despite the negative consequences, they just
can’t stop. As with any addiction, it is the “high” the
compulsive shopper seeks to achieve. The extreme
satisfaction in finding and making a great deal prevents
them from foreseeing the consequences of their actions.
Like most addictions, compulsive shopping often
masks deeper issues, which are best left to a professional
to diagnose and treat. Compulsive shoppers tend to shop
to relieve emotional stress. Shopping is their coping
mechanism, and sadly, it can lead to a stressful home life,
with many arguments ensuing about their reckless
spending habits.
Compulsive shoppers are often aware of their
behavior and may feel guilty or ashamed after a shopping
spree. They may lie to friends and family about how much
they spent and shuffle credit card balances and bills to
accommodate their spending habits. They may also feel
powerless to stop their behavior.
Compulsive shoppers usually come to the realization
that they have a problem. The addiction can be treated
with the right professional and plan. It does take work and
dedication, however. Anyone suspecting that they or a
loved one has a problem should seek professional help.
They can get their life back and get on the road to
recovery.
ROTH IRA Rollover Restrictions
Lifted in 2010
In 2008, taxpayers were for the first time allowed to
roll over amounts in employer plans, such as 401(k)s into
Roth IRAs. Before then, taxpayers had to move the funds
to a traditional IRA first, then to a Roth IRA. In addition,
until the end of 2009, there is an income limit on Roth
rollovers. Taxpayers can only do Roth rollovers if they
have adjusted gross income that does not exceed
$100,000. In 2010, this income limitation is abolished and
you will be able to roll over amounts from an employer
plan or a traditional IRA into a Roth IRA without limit.
When you roll over funds into a Roth IRA, you have
to pay income taxes on those amounts. If you do Roth
rollovers in 2010, you will be able to take rolled over
amounts into income over two tax years, 2011 and 2012.
Allowing you to split the income over two years will
reduce the tax rate you will have to pay on the rollover
amounts. These law changes are very favorable to
taxpayers and allow you great flexibility in reinvesting
your retirement funds, but the rules are complex.
