Today, on 25th July 2010 is the sacred day

of Guru Purnima which is a festival
traditionally celebrated by Hindus, and on
this day, devotees offer puja (worship) to
their Guru (Spiritual Guide). It falls on the
day of full moon, Purnima, in the month of
Ashadh (June-July) of the Hindu calendar.
Traditionally the festival is celebrated in the
honour of sage Vyasa, who is seen one of
the greatest gurus in ancient Hindu
traditions, and a symbol of Guru-shishya
parampara. Vyasa was not only believed to
be been born on this day, but also started
writing the Brahma Sutras on this day,
hence their recitations as a dedication to
him, are organised on this day, which is also
known as Vyasa Purnima

The Guru's Advice

Swami Sivananda recommends:
"Wake up at Brahmamuhurta (at 4 a.m.) on
this most holy day. Meditate on the lotus
feet of your Guru. Mentally pray to him for
his Grace, through which alone you can
attain Self-realisation. Do vigorous Japa
and meditate in the early morning hours.
"After bath, worship the lotus feet of your
Guru, or his image or picture with flowers,
fruits, incense and camphor. Fast or take
only milk and fruits the whole day.
In the afternoon, sit with other devotees of
your Guru and discuss with them the glories
and teachings of your Guru.
"Alternatively, you may observe the vow of
silence and study the books or writings of
your Guru, or mentally reflect upon his
teachings. Take fresh resolves on this holy
day, to tread the spiritual path in
accordance with the precepts of your Guru.
"At night, assemble again with other
devotees, and sing the Names of the Lord
and the glories of your Guru. The best form
of worship of the Guru is to follow his
teachings, to shine as the very embodiment
of his teachings, and to propagate his glory
and his message."
11 Sayings of Sai Baba
- Whoever puts his feet on Shirdi soil,
his sufferings would come to an end.
- The wretched and miserable would
rise into plenty of joy
and happiness, as soon as they climb
steps of my samadhi.
- I shall be ever active and vigorous
even after leaving this earthly body.
- My tomb shall bless and speak to the
needs of my devotees.
- I shall be active and vigorous even
from the tomb.
- My mortal remains would speak
from the tomb.
- I am ever living to help and guide all
who come to me, who surrender to
me and
who seek refuge in me.
- If you look to me, I look to you.
- If you cast your burden on me, I
shall surely bear it.
- If you seek my advice and help, it
shall be given to you at once.
- There shall be no want in the house
of my devotees.

Guru is the important part of our life, guru
plays a vital role in boosting the aspirant
frequently, when he becomes despondent or
simply runs out of steam. Gurus can lead
one on the path of happiness and help in
attaining salvation from worldly existence.
The “Gurus” are considered to represent
God himself. Guru is the one who dispels
the darkness of ignorance and infuses the
light of awareness into our lives.
There is a beautiful story told about a man
who wanted to walk on water. He begged
his guru to give him a secret mantra or a
special boon so he could complete this
remarkable feat. The man was extremely
pious and devoted, and he had been in his
guru’s service for many years. Therefore,
the guru gave him a leaf, folded many times
until it was very small. He told his disciple,
“Within this leaf is a secret formula which
will enable you to walk on water. However,
you must not open it because the formula
inside is a secret.”
So the man agreed, and he takes the folded
leaf carefully in his hands and begins his
journey across the river. He is walking fine
when suddenly he is overcome by curiosity.
What could be this secret formula? Is there
really a secret inside? Is it a powder or a
stone or some holy mantra printed? Where
did his guru get it? His doubts get the best
of him and he begins slowly to open the leaf
as he walks, careful lest any of the secret
formula should spill out into the water. As
soon as he unfolds the last piece to unveil
the secret, he suddenly sinks into the water
and drowns. Inside the leaf was written the
simple word, “faith.”
It was not the leaf, nor any secret powder or
mantra that enabled the devotee to
accomplish a miracle. It was the strength of
his faith in his guru and in the “boon” his
guru had given him. As soon as that faith
wavered and doubt crept in, his life was
lost. This is the power of faith.
At this time of Guru Purnima, we must look
at what really makes up the Guru-Disciple
relationship – what makes it so special, so
unique, so powerful and life-transforming?
That answer is faith. Faith can work
true miracles and without it, much of
life is futile. The guru might be of
infinite power, knowledge and
compassion. Yet, without the faith of
the disciple, the guru can do very
little for him.
There is a beautiful poem that says:
As children bring their broken toys with
tears for us to mend
I brought my broken dreams to God,
because He was my friend.
But, instead of leaving Him in peace to work
alone,
I hung around and tried to help with ways
that were my own.
At last I snatched them back and cried,
"How could you be so slow?"
"My child," He replied. "What could I do?
You never did let go."
That “letting go” is the faith. If we can
surrender to the guru with complete
faith, he will transform our lives.
However, if we “hang around” and
doubt and think that we know better
than he does, then we gain nothing.

Tashmai Shri Gurur Veh Namah"
May the Supreme Lord, the Guru
within us, lift the veil of ignorance
and bestow upon us all the Light of
the transcendental Knowledge. May
the blessings of Sri Vyasa and Shri
Shirdi Saibaba be our support and
inspiration in the quest for Truth. And
May the Merciful Sri Sai Baba always
shower His grace on us and our
families and remove our problems
and anxieties by giving us all -
strength , goodluck, success and
happiness with peace of mind.

Guru Poornima
On one occasion Krishnaji Noolkar, who
came from Pandari stayed in the Chavadi.
Baba told Shyama "ask that old man to
worship the pillar at Dhuni". After Shyama
returned, Baba asked," why don't you too
worship it"? Shyama replied "God! We
worship only You, why the pillar then"?
Though Baba initially objected to His
worship, however He agreed after Shyama's
repeated plea. Meantime, Noolkar referred
the calendar and the day was
Gurupoornima. That is the Birthday of
Vedavyasa, a great sage who sub-divided
the Vedas and gifted the treasure of
spiritual wisdom to humanity. Baba felt it
befitting to worship the Great Teacher.
Then, Tatya, Dada Khelkar and Shyama
together offered clothes to Sai and
worshipped Him. Since then it became a
custom to celebrate Guru Pooja in Shirdi.
But, why did Baba ask them to worship a
pillar? In the eyes of a scholar, everyone is a
divine form. In fact, it is the ground pillar
that bears the weight of the entire roof of a
house. In Baba's words, it is to worship the
pillar-like image of the Guru in a desired
manner. Moreover, Sai revealed to
Saranananda that He did penance in the
cave under the Masjid pillar for several
years. Sainath is the Cosmic Pillar who
holds the Universe symbolized as
Dwarkamayi, which shelters all, throws its
doors open to all beings, forever, for the
fulfilment of the values of life.
