Rabbi’s Message

Marriage INequality
Marriage Equality. . . . On December 2, the New York State Senate voted to
defeat the bill on Marriage Equality for same sex couples. This is a bitter dis-
appointment, not only for the LGBT community, but for all of us who had
hopes that the fear and bigotry that have driven this debate would finally be
eclipsed by understanding, acceptance, respect, and rationality. As a member
of the Rabbinic Advisory Committee of Reform Jewish Voice of New York
State, I convey to you the protest of RJV in the strongest possible terms. We
believe that all human beings are created B’tzelem Elohim, in the image of
God. As such, we are on record, along with the Central Conference of Ameri-
can Rabbis and the Union for Reform Judaism and its affiliates, in support of
full marriage equality for same sex couples. As a rabbi I am charged with up-
holding the laws of the State of New York in solemnizing marriages. As a re-
sult of this misguided vote, those laws remain unjust.
Civil rights. . . . As an American citizen, I am appalled that the Senate voted to deny a basic civil right to an
entire segment of our population: men and women who vote, earn a living, pay taxes, and raise their families
in New York State. Once upon a time in America; indeed, as late as 1967, interracial marriage was illegal. It
took all the years of the Civil Rights Movement, and then some, to bring America out of those dark days. But
much of America still lives in darkness - the darkness of fear and bigotry, particularly regarding the LBGT
community.
Fear and prejudice. . . . Homophobia is what decided this vote - fear and prejudice, plain and simple. But
the effect of this vote, for all intents and purposes, is officially sanctioned discrimination on the basis of sexual
orientation. No matter how artfully our lawmakers may try to dance around it, that is the sad fact.

The fight goes on. . . . I assure you that I will stand with Reform Jewish Voice, the Human Rights Campaign,
so very many of my colleagues and friends, and all the other organizations involved, to continue the fight for
Marriage Equality, with belief and confidence that justice will prevail.

Senator Eric Adams, an eloquent advocate. . . . In a heartfelt and eloquent speech on the floor of the NYS
Senate, our own Senator Eric Adams explained to his colleagues why the passage of marriage equality was so
crucial to the progress of our state within the context of civil rights. He evoked the memory of past civil rights
abuses in this country, and placed this issue squarely in that arena. In the personal meetings that I and a num-
ber of our congregants have had with Senator Adams, we have come away confident that there is no stronger
advocate for this issue of civil rights. A member of the NYC Police Force for some 22 years, Senator Adams
attained the rank of Captain. He is known as a coalition builder in our community. He will be at Union Tem-
ple as our annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. speaker on Friday, January 15. Reception at 6:00 PM,
Kabbalat Shabbat at 6:30 PM. We hope you will come to hear and exchange ideas with this courageous and
very interesting man who represents our district in the NYS Senate.
-Rabbi Linda Henry Goodman

Union Temple actors really showed their stuff last month when they pre-
sented a staged reading of the classic play “Fiddler on the Roof.” Under the
direction of temple member Stephen Hanks (below left) and UT Music
Director Dr. Jonathan Hall , the Shalom Aleichem inspired play featured
many temple members giving inspired performances before a packed audi-

Brotherhood
No Gloom of Night Here
It was a dark and stormy night… No, this is not the beginning of some bad novel; it’s the description of the
beginning of a great evening hosted by the Brotherhood on December 5. An intrepid group ventured out on a
very rainy evening to participate in Havdalah, the service marking the end of Shabbat. After light refresh-
ments, Rabbi Goodman led the group in a lovely prayer service.
Shortly afterwards, many of the congregants crossed Eastern Parkway to join the First Saturday festivities at
the Brooklyn Museum of Art. One of the highlights for many was chance to view the photographic exhibit
“Who Shot Rock and Roll.” A grand evening concluded with a delicious group dinner at Cheryl’s Global Soul
Restaurant on Underhill Avenue.
We hope that everyone can join us at our next meeting on Sunday, February 7, when we will have a book dis-
cussion about the novel The History of Love, by Brooklyn author Nicole Krauss. New York Magazine has de-
scribed the book as “a significant novel, genuinely one of the year’s best. Old Leo (a new entry in the Jewish-lit
canon) nurses the loss of his true love, as well as his only son—a famous writer—and his own great manuscript.
Krauss’s novel is emotionally wrenching yet intellectually rigorous, idea-driven but with indelible characters and
true suspense.”

Preschool

Latkes, Applesauce and Singing

The month of December was filled with song and
dance at Union Temple Preschool. Early in Decem-
ber we were treated to a special performance by
Jenny Torgerson, the head teacher of the Chickadees.
Jenny, who is a dancer, was joined by a colleague of
hers, Jen DeVane. Dressed in tutus, they visited each
of the classrooms. Each class participated in a dance
class, followed by a performance by our prima balle-
rinas of a piece from The Nutcracker.
The main focus of the month of December was on
Chanukah. Our students read books about Chanukah,
sang songs about Chanukah, and enjoyed preparing
and eating Chanukah treats: latkes and applesauce. We
had a special visit by Rachel Gaballe, mother of Shai

Union Temple Delivers A Recession Proof Food Drive
On November 22, 2009, The Union Temple Social
Action Committee and our Religious School stu-
dents sponsored a pre-Thanksgiving food drive for
CHIPS, the organization in Park Slope that pro-
vides meals for the homeless.
This year our food collection took place in front of
Key Food on Seventh Avenue. It was staffed by
Union Temple volunteers, including our seventh
graders who were responsible for running one
complete shift and for preparing the posters that
advertised the event.
We had great success in collecting a tremendous
assortment of nonperishable foods as well as per-
sonal care items such as shampoo and toothpaste.
In addition, monetary contributions reached the
sum of $190 which will also be donated to CHIPS.
Thank you to everyone who volunteered in this
highly successful Food Drive. It was indeed a com-
munal effort on the part of many of our Union Tem-
ple members. A special thanks goes out to our sev-
enth graders—Molly Baum, Sarah Gratz, Samantha
Horowitz, Abigail Marin, Martin Bernstein, Gabrielle
Giles, Annie Futterman, Ben Futterman, and to their
teacher Carole Gould, for their enthusiastic participa-
tion. Leo Silverstein and David Vogel were two other
UT students on board to help out. Andy Mirer and his
sons Erez and Lucas were instrumental in helping us
set up, and Andy and John Golomb delivered the
proceeds to CHIPS early Monday morning. Of
course, we are most grateful to the members of our
surrounding community whose generosity will help
to provide for those in need.

write.” Zeva Roschko, a woman hooked on Memoir writing groups.
Sisterhood Memoir Group
What will you write? You will be surprised. A memoir group awakens memories you have inside that bubble
up from the recesses of your personal history.
Every session will provide time for writing, time for reading what you have written (but only if you choose to)
and “prompts” that will inspire your hand to move across the page. Whatever your experience is in expressing
yourself on paper, you have a voice that will out. Group energy seems to have a magical effect.
I never know when I come to a blank white page what will spill out. I didn’t know when I attempted to write
this in time for the deadline of the Union Temple Newsletter.
This I did know: we all have stories to tell. Come to a trial session. Look for time and date. Contact me with
