HND Engineering
Work Based Learning

In this module you will undertake self-analysis to identify individual tasks, activities, or
programmes of work that you have undertaken as part of your daily working lives. You will
show how those activities have contributed to your development as a professional within
engineering.
You are required to document key aspects of their development to date and to critically
appraise your career journey, identifying areas of your experience that may benefit from
additional growth and producing an action plan for their ongoing professional
development.
You will be provided with a learning pack which will include documentation to be completed
and guidance on assessment outcomes.
You will receive 1 to 1 support and guidance when undertaking reflective practice to identify
and document aspects of your professional life that have contributed to your development
as professional practitioners of their engineering discipline.

Assessment
Module assessment comprises a formative element and a summative element. The
formative assessment involves the support and guidance given by their tutor, either directly
or via email or telephone. The summative assessment involves a single in course assessment
in the form of a multi-element report.

Developing a Logbook
In order to accurately record your developments as a professional practitioner it is strongly
recommended that a detailed logbook of development is kept, and updated weekly.

Formatting of Reports
All submitted reports should be correctly structured and formatted with the inclusion of
referencing and a full bibliography. Your text should be Arial size 12, 1.5 line spacing and
text aligned to justification.

Developing & Keeping records

You are required to keep a logbook or record of events for the duration of this unit.
A log book is a printed or written journal that accounts for a specific activity or set of
activities. Professionals use log books to keep track of hours spent on specific tasks. This log
book is usually the only proof that you have of your efforts, so it must be well maintained.
Keeping a logbook helps you keep track of ideas, occurrences you have seen and your
reactions to it. There are no rules about what to put in you logbook and how to structure it,
but remember it should be something that is useful to you to look back on and record what
you think and feel, it is not just what you have seen and done.

You need to document which skills youve developed and how you have evaluated this. It is
important to keep written records for a number of reasons:
helps you to measure your progress
provides information to draw upon when applying for jobs
offers a source of information to share with your tutor
helps you to think about how plans could be improved
provides details of current situations in the workplace & changes in circumstance

Logbook Entries should contain the following information:

Dates and times,
Activity or task description,
Your thoughts and comments

Undertaking a SWOT Analysis

A SWOT analysis is a strategic planning tool which can be used by organizations to identify
organisations; Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities for development and Threats they are
susceptible to. This tool can also be used to carry out an analysis of a professional
practitioner.
This is a useful starting point for PDP because it acts as an exercise to systematically analyse
your strengths and weaknesses.

Strengths
What are your key strengths?
Qualifications
Skills
Industrial Experience
Management & organisational skills
Time keeping
Finances

Weaknesses
What are your key weaknesses?
Qualifications

Opportunities
What opportunities are available for your
professional development?
New courses & qualifications
Industrial updating
New projects
Gaining experience of new processes
and work departments

Threats
What are the threats to your current situation?
What necessary skills and experience are
you lacking to undertake you current
role within engineering?

Once you become aware of where you are now, you can think about where you want to be
and how you will get there through action planning.

Action Plan

Action Planning helps you to identify and set targets, documenting a thought out strategy. A
well written action plan will be clear in its intentions,

Specific: e.g. I will identify and practise good time management techniques to reach
my project deadline steadily and without panic, rather than I will learn how to
manage my time

Measurable: e.g. I will set myself a weekly schedule of things to do

Achievable: e.g. I know there are workshops and books on time management and I
will use these to identify good practice

Realistic: e.g. I know I have some free time every Thursday morning and I will use
this time to work on my techniques

Time-Bound: e.g. I will work towards the project deadline, setting weekly targets

You are recommended to set yourself a few clear goals, ranking them by preference, and
then set clear sub-goals. These sub-goals will help you to measure your progress en route
and help you to consider the various steps ahead so that you wont be tempted to set
unattainable targets.
It is often useful to talk through goal setting with another person, who may help you to
think things through and maybe pick up on something you may have missed. Your personal
tutor is a good person to ask.
