Time : Three hours

Full Marks : 100

Use Separate Answer Script for each part.

PART I
Answer any two questions.
Use of IRC & IS codes are allowed.
Draw neat sketches to expalin your answer.
Assume any other data not provided.

1. a)

Discuss on the ideal characteristics for selection of site

of river bridges.

b)

10

Calculate the live load moment of the cantilever slab of

a R.C.C girder bridge as shown in figure -1.

2.

15

Calculate the design moment of a two-lane culvert due

to 70R wheeled vehicle with the following data.
i)

Clean span = 7.0m

ii)

Width of bearing = 300mm

3. a)

Compare critically between Suspension and Cable stayed

types of bridges from structural consideration.

b)

Calculate the live load moment considering two number

of class A train of vehicles on the external logitudinal
girder. The effective span of the bridge is 25.0m and other
details are provided in figure - 1.

PART II
Answer any two questions.

4. a)

Explain the term. Regime width. Explain : Mannings

Method of calculating flood velocity.

b)

3+3

Suppose in an individual storm F cm rain fall. In T

hours. What is the relationship between mean intensity
of rainfall I and intensity of rainfall i over a short period
of time within the duration of rainfall? Explain the terms
One Hour Rain fall and Time of concentration. What
are the other parameters required to calculate flood
discharge by using Rational formula.

c)

Discuss different parameters one needs to look into while

selecting a proper site for a river bridge.

5.

4+7+3

Calculate discharge and Regime Width at a particular

location of a waterway with the following data. Assume
roughosity coefficient n = 0.03. If a five span bridge is
to be constructed at this location, calculate maximum
scour depth at pier and abutment locations. Assume the
bridge to be supported on 7.0m dia well foundation.
Assume pier thickness to be 900 mm.
