The Mercure Inverness Hotel transformed

by extensive refurbishment.
The Mercure Inverness Hotel, set on the banks
of the River Ness in the heart of the city, has
recently undergone an extensive refurbishment to
transform its biggest event room, providing the
ideal location to cater for all occasions.
The hotels recent renovation also includes the
creation of twelve brand new Privilege Bedrooms,
which feature everything guests could wish for
to relax and unwind in style from plush dressing
gowns to Nespresso coffee machines.
Fraser Peterkin Gm comments on the project:
The design in the new bedrooms is fresh and
modern. We used bold splashes of colour
against an elegant and stylish grey palate. In
each room, there is a highland influenced
painting positioned on the ceiling over the bed,
to add a locally inspired touch to the design.
Each room has a bespoke wardrobe and the
bathrooms include large walk-in showers. The
Inverness Suite has a unique Scottish thistle

carpet design, with contemporary tartan

wallpaper and deep purples and greys, to give a
perfect setting for a wedding.
The Inverness Suite caters for those looking
for an ideal wedding or event venue. The suite
accommodates up to 180 guests and with its own
private bar, also provides the perfect space for
Christmas parties. This year the festive theme
is Mistletoe Masquerade, where guests will
experience a night of mystery, charm and intrigue.
Located with the dramatic Highland backdrop,
the hotel also creates the perfect romantic setting
for a wedding. From an intimate gathering to an
extraordinary affair, the hotel has experts on hand
to create bespoke packages to suit every guest.
The Inverness Suite can also host up to 200
conference delegates and offers complimentary
high speed WiFi throughout the hotel.

IMAG-ine That.
Hot on the heels of last months excellent JOHN BYRNE exhibition, INVERNESS MUSEUM
& ART GALLERY (IMAG) is again providing some rather wonderful treats for the eyes in the
form of MODERN MASTERS IN PRINT: MATISSE, PICASSO, DALI & WARHOL from 06
DEC. Drawn from the Victoria & Albert Museums renowned print collection, this touring
exhibition explores the work of four great 20th-century artists, the aforementioned Henri
Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali and Andy Warhol. Their works span 75 years and
arguably give birth to the modern age, drawing on everything from psychotherapy and the
world of dreams to the consumerist aesthetic. As well as being rather magnificent to look
at. A great opportunity to see modern masterpieces up close.
IMAG is doing a fine job of engaging with the community and the REMEMBERING
CHRISTMAS PAST, TUE 09 DECSAT 10 JAN in the Room to Discover is no exception. A
display of historic Christmas decorations and Festive fayre from the museums collections
simply sparkles. NB: Room to Discover is sometimes used for other activities - call 01463
237114 to check that the exhibition is open before you go.
Offering a variation on that theme is the FESTIVE FAVOURS event on THUR 11 DEC from
45pm. Head along and get Christmas crafty at this after-school drop-in activity for all the
young at heart, where you can make your own Christmas heart decorations and get glitzy
decorating gingerbread lads and lassies. Mince pies and juice and Christmas cheer will
also be in plentiful supply. No need to book, just drop-in.
Concluding on 06 DEC at IMAG, but thereafter on permanent exhibition in the First Floor
Gallery is WORLD WAR ONE: NESS STORIES. Curated together with pupils from Inverness
Royal Academy, and teams from Highland Archives and Highland Libraries, the exhibition
uses objects from High Life Highlands collections to explore the extraordinarily ordinary
personal stories of those who lived through The Great War. The new research uncovered by
the Academy pupils reveals just how deeply WW1 affected families in the region.
KIDS EVENT: A TREASURE FOR CHRISTMAS: with Whiskers and Capn Kate
THU 04 DEC, 4:305:30pm, Room to Discover
After-school children and families event with local childrens book author, PAULINE MACKAY,
reading from her latest book Whiskers and the Pieces of Eight in which IMAGs plucky,
wee water vole and Curator Capn Kate adventure through some piratical japes to save
the museums treasures. Pauline will be signing copies of this perfect stocking filler and
there will be a round the museum Treasure Hunt, with pieces of eight for everyone to
round off the evenings fun. Come dressed as a pirate, do! Event is FREE, but booking
is essential, as places are limited.

Bring Out The Big Guns

Oh good, another Hobbit film. Actually, those getting weary of the seemingly interminable
franchise will be delighted to learn that THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES
[4] is the conclusion of Peter Jacksons epic retelling of Tolkiens book. And those with
a soft spot for it all will no doubt relish a last chance to get caught up in the goings-on in
Middle Earth. This time round the races of Dwarves, Elves and Men must decide whether
to unite or be destroyed. Difficult choice From 12 DEC.
Another burgeoning franchise presents its latest instalment in the form of PENGUINS OF
MADAGASCAR [2], throwing anthropological sense to the wind with admirable abandon.
An elite undercover task force led by the handsome and husky Agent Classified (voiced
by the justifiably ubiquitous Benedict Cumberbatch) must stop the villainous Dr Octavius
Brine before he destroys the world as we know it. From 05 DEC (EC from 19 DEC).
Another seasonal family flick is GET SANTA [1], a suitably festive romp with Jim Broadbent
as the big fella, waking up in a garage having crashed his sleigh and finding himself on the
run from the police. An excellent cast also includes Stephen Graham, Rafe Spall, Ewen
Bremner and Jodie Whittaker. From 05 DEC.
One of the films of the year is MR TURNER and this month we finally get to see just why
Timothy Spall won Best Actor at Cannes and will no doubt be in the running for an Oscar.
He spent two years learning to paint before taking on the title role of perhaps the worlds
first modern artist and the film is packed with the same breathtaking boldness as Turners
pictures. At EDEN COURT from 05 DEC.
Another fascinating painter biopic is Tim Burtons latest, BIG EYES [7]. Its a drama centred
on the awakening of the painter Margaret Keane, her phenomenal success in the 1950s,
and the subsequent legal difficulties she had with her husband, who claimed credit for her
cute/terrifying goggle-eyed artworks. The wonderful Amy Adams stars. From 26 DEC.
This is the time of the year when all the big guns come out in the lead up to the Academy
Award nominations, so youre almost spoilt for choice. Lauded or laughed at will be:
UNBROKEN [6] (26 DEC) - Angelina Jolie directs and produces this true story of WW2
soldiers caught and interned by the Japanese, with a script co-written by the Coen Brothers;
EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS [5] (26 DEC) - Ridley Scotts biblical epic starring Christian
Bale and Ben Kingsley, and BLACK SEA [3] (05 DEC), the latest from Kevin McDonald,
in which a submarine captain takes a job with a shadowy backer to search the depths for
gold. Jude Law stars. Not sure that DUMB AND DUMBER TO or NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM:
SECRET OF THE TOMB will troubling the Academy though, popular as they may prove
And dont miss three glorious films presented by INVERNESS FILM FANS at EDEN COURT
in the form of Ingmar Bergmans THE SEVENTH SEAL (02 DEC), FARGO (16 DEC) and
THE BLUE ANGEL (30 DEC).

KIDS

If only there was some sort of special event for kids to look forward to in December, preferably
involving presents and general cheer. Well, unfounded rumours suggest there might be, but
until then were sticking with what we know.
And one thing we do know is that HOMECOMING HALLOWEEN is taking place on NESS ISLANDS
on 28 & 29 NOV. The torrential weather put paid to the original event, but so much time and
work had been put into it all, it seemed daft not to let us all experience the spooky fun. And for
those wondering why it wasnt relocated, the whole thing is site-specific, with a whole series of
carefully conceived tableaux, Ness Islands being the only suitable place to stage it all. It would
be a shame to let all the effort from the Council peeps plus John McGeoch and Eden Courts
CREATIVE team go to waste so repay them by heading along for a delightfully scary, even
if slightly late adventure involving the ghosts of returning Scots, summoned by Macbeth. And
then you can turn your thoughts towards the big fella in red
Into December proper and another event thats becoming something of a tradition for
youngsters in the form of WINTER WONDERLAND 2014 in WHIN PARK from 1214 DEC. As
you might expect, its all about making Santa and his reindeers welcome as they prepare for
the busy global circumnavigation ahead. Its a fine place for photo opportunities and snaps to
embarrass/warm the hearts of the family for years to come, but dont forget to wrap up warm.
Just as popular, but this time indoors, is the STICKY KIDS CHRISTMAS SINGALONG at
STRATHPEFFER PAVILION on TUE 16 DEC at 10AM. Santa has sent Molly & Mac an invitation to
come to Lapland to perform their action-packed singalong show. Lots of audience participation
and watch out for flying crackers! Suitable for 2-6 year olds. Tickets 6 01997 420124.
Finally, as the Big Day approaches, the little uns will enjoy ONE NIGHT IN SANTAS WORKSHOP
at EDEN COURT from 1620 DEC. Presented by Eden Court CREATIVE whove delighting sellout audiences with Ding Dong, Little Blue and Humm-Bug! in previous years, this should be
popular, so get your tickets early. Santas workshop is buzzing with business and everyone is
working hard to get ready in time for Christmas. But at night, whilst Santas little helpers sleep,
the workshop falls silent and the toys have a little fun of their own! Uh-oh

2015 Here We Come

Naturally, this months musical offerings will be mere diversions to the general
wassailing leading up to the jiggerypokery of Hogmanay. But there are still some gigs
thatll be drawing the crowds away from their festive preparations and indeed even
topping up the party spirit, beginning with DEACON BLUE at INVERNESS LEISURE on
05 DEC. Their performance at Bella a couple of years back showed theyve still got a
huge fanbase and songs like Dignity and Real Gone Girl are wearing surprisingly
well, so expect everyone to go a bit bonkers.
The crowd will be bouncing equally enthusiastically when THE VATERSAY BOYS play
IRONWORKS on 13 DEC. The boys from the Isles do the Party With A Traditional
Soundtrack thing better than most and may even convince those whove written off
the genre as relentlessly fiddly-diddly that its still capable of lifting the heart.
A bit of festive rocknroll nostalgia at EDEN COURT from 1113 DEC with HOLLY AT
CHRISTMAS wherein tribute act BUDDY HOLLY AND THE CRICKETERS mix the mans
old hits with contemporary classics and Xmas favourites.
If you like your sounds a little more contemporary you cant go wrong with hot young
locals SCHNARFF SCHNARFF who play their debut IRONWORKS show on 19 DEC
with support from Glasgows FOREIGNFOX and local indie-rock act SEARCHING FOR
DONKEYS. The evening is rounded off with Inverness Indie/Alternative club night
INDIENESS keeping things going until the early hours.
There are, of course, plenty of opportunities for a knees-up on Hogmanay itself,
most notably the RED HOT HIGHLAND FLING at NORTHERN MEETING PARK. Now
pretty much a fixture in the festive calendar, 10,000+ people are expected to see
host CRAIG HILL [2] (who appears to be after Highland residency status) introduce
THE RED HOT CHILLI PIPERS [1] with special guests MNRAN [4] and THE JULIE
FOWLIS BAND [3].
HOOTANANNY should be packed to the rafters for their Hogmanay shindig featuring
THE BIG FAT ELECTRIC CEILIDH BAND and THE MYSTIC SHOES, while THE MARKET
BAR opens its doors on 31 DEC for the first time since 2000 for celebrations featuring
JAMIE MARSHALL and THE DISCIPLES OF ROCK. Tickets for both of the above
events are strictly limited so get them now from the respective venues.

Like the campaign to Bring Back The Cape. That being the Inverness Cape, as
sported by Sherlock and his contemporaries but due for what the HFW organisers
call a revamp to make it current and on trend. With that in mind Project BBTC
will be running throughout the week with celebrity endorsements and the launch of
an exclusive collection. Lets hope Cumberbatch pays his dues and gets involved
somewhere along the way.
Thats just one of the attractions in store during the week, others including a range
of masterclasses, a talk at IG:LU on How To Be A Fashion Blogger and even a popup store. The whole shebang concludes with a fashion show at the GLENMORISTON
TOWNHOUSE HOTEL featuring a range of local and national designers, showcasing
the best in new fashion and aiming to put the Highlands on the fashionista map.
The show will feature models initially chosen from a no make-up selfie competition
headed up by local Lydia Francis.
GARRY JAMES, from the event organiser We Are Giraffe says, I am extremely happy
that Highlands Fashion Week is back for a Winter edition, giving designers, models
and local businesses the chance to showcase their work to a brand new audience.

The support from the locals for the first Highlands Fashion Week was amazing, and we
just hope that it continues and people will get behind this week too.
Garry adds, The models this year are a combination of old and new faces, but the
team is still the same. We put the girls through some rigorous model training, and
Lydia is the one who has come out on top. I really believe she has a bright career
ahead of her and we have a few projects planned for the future together.

Dressing Up For Xmas

The festive season is upon us and well all be keeping an eye out for Father Christmas.
Or, on the day of the SANTA RUN [1] starting at INVERNESS LEISURE on 03 DEC, a whole
host of beardy folk in red outfits. One of the most successful fund-raising events of the year,
its open to everyone, whether you wish to run, jog or walk around the beautiful 5km route.
For your 15 registration fee all adults will get a full Santa Suit which is yours to keep and
might come in handy on Xmas Eve (say no more). Children under 13 can register for 10 and
receive a special edition event t-shirt and Santa hat. All participants also receive a goody
bag and medal. Children and adults will participate in the same event at the same time so
you will be able to run/walk together. More details at wildheartsevents.com and if that one
gives you a taste for more, theres another SANTA RUN in Aviemore on 20 DEC.
More dressing up at the latest instalment of the highly successful ROCKNWRESTLE [2]
at IRONWORKS on 12 DEC with quite possible its biggest star to date, DREW GALLOWAY
(or Drew Macintyre, such is the baffling nomenclature business of professional wrestling).
Currently the Evolve Champion and a former WWE intercontinental and WWE tag team
champion, Drew will also be holding a pre-show meet and greet. Also on the card are:
BBC Insane Fight Club star JACK JESTER, NOAM DAR (currently appearing in TNA British
Bootcamp on Challenge TV), BT GUNN, WOLFGANG, LIAM THOMSON, KID FITE, THE
OWENS TWINS and more.
If you prefer your flashiness on the rink, take advantage on SAT 27 DEC of witnessing
the top HIGHLAND SYNCHRONIZED ICE SKATING TEAMS at INVERNESS ICE CENTRE.
International senior team Moray Dolphins, British Champions Northern Lights, juvenile
team the Seal Pups and adult team the Highlanders will all competing individually and as
groups and you can vote for your favourite act who will win the Ice Factor trophy.
In recent times EL KESSOCKO has become something of a New Years Day tradition and
its on again this season as ROSS COUNTY take on ICT in Dingwall on 01 JAN. Along with
regular fans were sure therell be plenty of folk home for the hols taking the opportunity to
catch up with old pals in the crowd at a match where points are vital for both teams, albeit
for very different reasons..

A Theatrical Tradition
One of the best things about the Highlands cultural landscape in 2014 has been the
number of quality theatrical productions weve been able to witness, something that might
just have given folk whod never experienced such things a taste for more in the year
ahead. That said, for many going to the theatre is a once-a-year thing and thats just
because of The Panto. So expect tickets to go like hot cakes for ALADDIN [1] at EDEN
COURT from 02 DEC04 JAN, with previous pantos having attracted up to 30,000 people
during their runs. Unlike in some other cities, the Inverness panto doesnt rely on famous
faces to pull in the crowds, preferring instead to offer the tried and trusted thigh-slapping,
cross-dressing and merry mayhem. And Christmas wouldnt be Christmas without it.

Elsewhere there are plenty more panto productions on offer, but curiously, perhaps
due to some act of dramatic synchronicity, three of them are all the same story, DICK
WHITTINGTON. So you can take in the yarn about the fellow with the haversack, the
cat and the dreams of golden streets at LITTLE THEATRE, NAIRN (26 NOV13 DEC),
MACDONALD AVIEMORE RESORT (29 NOV04 JAN) and FLORIANS LITTLE THEATRE (05
13 DEC). Presumably theres some sort of prize for anyone going to all three.

Over at STRATHPEFFER PAVILION theyre having no truck with what everyone else is doing
and present a refreshingly different tale in the form of RAPUNZEL on 17 & 18 DEC. A
fun-filled adventure for all the family, featuring original songs, hilarious characters, evil
baddies, a lovable skunk and of course Rapunzel with loads and loads of hair. The show is
brought to you by KAPOW THEATRE SCOTLAND, a new theatre company aiming to entertain
audiences of all ages. There will be two shows each day, at 1.30pm and 7pm.

Something promising to be a little darker, though no less enjoyable is SWEENEY TODDS

CUT THROAT CHRISTMAS at EDEN COURT from 0810 DEC. Presented by CREATIVEs
Drama Lab class and directed by Eden Courts Drama Artist, John Batty, this show is, they
say, the perfect antidote to the annual onslaught of candy-cane seasonal schmaltz! Last
years take on classic TV comedy Allo Allo sold out, so expect this to be another festive
favourite. But dont go getting any ideas about what to put in your post-Xmas pies. Ooft.

Last month in ICA we told you about the

Last month we described what happened during the

treatment as your teeth moved. Once we are both
happy with the new position of your teeth it is time to
get everything taken off.

The treatment involves having clear brackets with

discrete white wires placed on your teeth. The brace
will gently alter the position of the teeth to a more
aesthetic position. If your teeth are misaligned in any
way - crooked, twisted, spaced or if you have had braces
in the past and your teeth have relapsed then this
treatment could work wonders for you.

At The End Of Treatment:

Six Month Smile treatment, a modern, short term

orthodontic treatment we have recently started
offering at Eilertsen Dental Care.

These before and after images will give you an idea of

what is possible:

Before >

After >
Six month smiles has made use of the new technology
to provide a simple and very effective solution to
provide you with a straight, healthy and beautiful smile
without having to remove healthy teeth or wear braces
for several years.

Some advantages include:

Average treatment time is 6 months
Clear brackets and wires are barely visible
The specialist Six Month Smile patient tray kits mean
your appointment times are short and comfortable.
Low forces are involved meaning treatment is more
comfortable and your teeth are kept healthy.
Short overall treatment time means hygiene can be
maintained more easily.
Less expensive than conventional orthodontic
treatment.

1. Firstly, we stick a retainer onto the insides of your

teeth so they are kept in their new position.
2. We then take off
all the brackets and
smooth off all the
excess cement before
then getting your
whitening kit ready
for you.
3. We recommend
you see one of our
hygienists to get rid of
any extra stains and
make sure your teeth
are squeaky clean
before starting your
whitening process.
And that is it! We
will recommend
the best products
and procedures for
keeping everything
clean and healthy so
all that is left is for you
to enjoy your new straight smile.
If you have always had squint teeth and thought you
had them for life then this system may be just the thing
for you. If you have any questions please just pick up

EATING OUT

R Bar @ Rocpool Reserve

Culduthel Road, Inverness
When Rocpool Reserve rst opened
almost a decade ago it wrenched the
Highland hotel scene into the 21st
century, setting a benchmark that
even now hasn t quite been matched
by anyone else. The tourism and
hospitality awards that it consistently
wins is testament to a place that
deliberately resists the faded
grandeur that previously dened
hotels up here, celebrating instead a
boutique enterprise just a short walk
from the city centre with gorgeous
rooms, a glorious view of the Great
Glen and a quiet, friendly eciency.
Right from the beginning it always
emphasised that just as important
as the hotel itself is the restaurant, a
calmly elegant place that instantly
gained a reputation for turning out
top quality nosh. And that reputation
was boosted further when in 2009,
the restaurant was taken over by
Albert Roux, brother of Michel and
father of Michel Jr, a cooking dynasty
that have arguably done more
than any other family to bring great
cuisine to this country.

01463 240 089

The restaurant was renamed Chez

Roux, the name giving a hint of the
atmosphere he is trying to convey.
Now, I don t want a Michelin star,
he has said. I want to cook the sort
of food that my mum used to serve
us at home, using fresh products,
and do as little as possible to it. It s all
about letting the product speak for
itself.
Even more signicant than that has
been Albert Roux s own personal
commitment to encouraging and
developing young chefs up here.
From giving lessons in schools
to employing local youngsters
in his kitchens and overseeing
competitions like Young Highland
Chef Of The Year he s ensuring that
great cooking in these parts will be a
feature for years to come. It s quite a
legacy.
But another part of the hotel with just
as much of a fanbase is the adjoining R
Bar, given its own identity courtesy of
a separate entrance and, particularly
at weekends, a destination of choice
for those who ve grown out of the

club scene but still want a lively

social space with great cocktails. It
also serves food including a long list
of Bar Bites that take in everything
from a club sandwich to a ribeye
steak with intriguing options like
haggis beignets and parmesan
gnocchi along the way. There s also
the option of the clumsily monikered,
but fascinating sounding RouXpress,
a four-course quickie meal for 15.50
served from noon until 6pm where
everything comes at the same time.
With this being a season when
many of you will be dashing around
doing your Xmas shopping we were
wondering whether this might just
be the place to grab a quick, quality
meal in an oasis of relative calm. So
we head along to try it out.
The R Bar is obviously designed
for night time with its modern
chandeliers and reective surfaces,
but even by day it has a certain
elegance. And, at half past noon
on a gloomy Wednesday, it s
deserted.

With luck that won t be the case in the

future because the meal we get to eat
is truly historic. . .
Kicking o with free nibbles in the
form of olives, vegetable crisps
and excellent ciabatta bread, the
RouXpress menu on oer is dierent
from that on the website and the
one oered a few days previously,
showing that it s regularly changing
and admirably seasonal. There are
two choices of main and pudding,
supplemented by a soup and sh
course, the four dishes presented
beautifully like - and this is meant as a
compliment - the best airplane meal
you could ever imagine.
And so to the food itself. And a
continual search for superlatives.

Lightly Spiced Sweet Potato

Veloute with Fennel Seeds is

an extraordinary taste sensation,

creamily intense with the balance
of avour perfectly judged and the
fennel/sweet potato combination
being something you wonder how
you ever did without.

Equally assured is Mackerel

Escabeche, New Potato and
Horseradish Salad. Nice to see

such a sh getting the centre stage

it deserves and using citrus to cook
it brings out its magnicent taste,
the whole marrying beautifully with
a condently delicate horseradish
cream and potato salad.

My companion s main is Pan

Seared Hake Fillet with Sea

Vegetables and Saron Sauce.

Inexplicably, much of the hake

caught here is shipped o straight
to Spain, but fortunately Monsieur
Roux understands that it s a sh to
be valued. Especially when cooked
as well as this, the contrast of textures
and avours working delightfully.
You get separate cutlery for every
course and I ve been given a serrated
knife for my Slow Cooked Shin of

Beef, Glazed Vegetables and

Red Wine Jus. To be honest, a

52

butter knife would have been just as

suitable since its long, slow cooking
makes for an unctuously tender piece

of meat with a gorgeous richness. An

object lesson in how to bring the best
out of an ostensibly cheap cut of meat
and turn it into something worthy of
greatness. The only problem (and this
is the case with the sh too) is that by
the time you get to eating your main
it s started to go cold. Unavoidable
perhaps, especially since keeping
the sh in particular articially warm
would result in overcooking it.
The puddings retain the toweringly high
standard of whats gone before. My Isle

of Mull Cheddar Shortbread, Blue

CheesePannacottawithPortGlazed
Figs is an inspired creation, particularly

the idea of a savoury pannacotta, and

its executed with aplomb. And why, in
all these centuries since shortbread was
invented has no Highlander ever realised
just how blooming lovely a cheese version
would be?
companion s Albert Roux
Classic Caramelised Tart is

My

every bit as good as you d expect

from something the man himself is
prepared to put his name too. Melt-inthe-mouth perfect pastry and a lling
that manages the exquisite balance
between indulgent creaminess and
lemon tang. It s a marvellous end to
proceedings.
A truly exceptional lunch with
certainly the nest cooking I ve
experienced all year. And only an
hour from arrival to departure. So, if
all that Xmas shopping is getting you
in a tizz, Chez Roux might just be the
place to go for the best present your
taste buds will ever get.

Ken Kelman: Advert turn-o...

I heard an advert that amused
me. I found it funny probably
because Im quite a literal
person, I tend to take things at
face value - literally, literally. Hell
will freeze over before you find
me using a metaphor!
You might have heard of the
Central Office for Information,
or the C.O.I. - they were the
government
department
responsible for the dissemination
of information - parliaments
sales and marketing arm, if you
will. Formed in 1946 they doled
out the sort of stuff the powersthat-be thought we, the public,
really ought to know. They made
the public information films
we all knew and loved as kids
from Charley Says with the
lovable but incomprehensible
cat .. to the Green Cross Code
films featuring the man inside

the Darth Vader costume, David

Prowse .. to the scary Protect
and Survive series - which told
us to paint ourselves white to
deflect the blast and cower
under the kitchen table to avoid
fall out in the event of a nuclear
war. Their films were generally
informative and amusing and
had their own particular charm.
The C.O.I. was axed in 2011 as a
cost cutting measure.
I hope this doesnt come across
as political because Im not really
a very political animal. At least
its not party political, though it
might be partly political.

for Work and Pensions, bless

them, their current campaign
aims to highlight new pension
regulations. Theyve chosen
to do this by laying out a 5
point plan about the need for
businesses, be they small or
large, to have a pension scheme
for their employees.
The advert I heard tries to
hammer home the message with
a bit of pre-amble about the fact
that theyve created a 5 step
plan before the voice-over guy
begins to describe in detail the 5
steps of the plan.
He starts like this
Step 1: turn off the radio;
Step 2:

Anyway with the demise of the

Central Office of Information
the various other departments
now have to do their own I didnt hear Step 2 - Its a radio
marketing. Which brings me to advert - and stupidly, as it turns
the D.W.P. - the Department out, I followed Step 1!

Outdoor Rugs

Reclaim your garden this winter...

Many of us have extensive decking in our gardens these days, which we use
throughout the summer months - often used as a dining or entertaining area but
what happens now that the colder months have arrived? Wooden decking often
becomes lethal in wet or icy conditions, so even though the day might be sunny
and bright, and patio heaters can ensure a pleasant enough temperature, the
treacherous conditions underfoot make your decking a no-go area.
That is why there has been a big development in the outdoor rug market. No longer
are they just plain fake turf or coir, now you can choose from almost as many colours
and patterns as you can for an indoor rug, and not only does it provide eective grip
underfoot making your decking safe to use all year round but it also looks really
attractive too and adds a splash of colour to your garden.
Made from a variety of synthetic and natural bres and durable polypropylene which
is resistant to water, UV Rays, rotting and mould, they are generally easy to clean and
maintain as well they can mostly be just hosed o. They can also be left out in the
sun, rain or snow and are ideal to bring a bit of colour into a winter garden as well as
making the decking safer for use.
So why not claim back your decking through the winter months and continue to
BBQ and entertain your guests with a winter garden party?
Outdoor rugs are available from various websites and outlets, so we suggest shopping around online. We
liked some of the ones on oer in a variety of colours and sizes at modern-rugs.co.uk/rug-type/outdoorrugs (prices/sizes - from 67X130cm @ 64 to 2X3m @ 349), also worth checking out primrose.co.uk and
search outdoor rugs .
