Professional Statement

Statement before School Based Experience (SBE)

In this semester, I need to undergo my first School Based Experience (SBE) that will be
carried out from 5th March 2012 to 9th March 2012. Through this program, I hope that I
will be able to gain early understanding about the school from perspective of a teacher.
For preparation, I need to plan several activities that I will carry out at the school.
Furthermore, for my EDU 3101 Education and Philosophy in Malaysia, we are given a
coursework that required us to carry out some observation and interviews with the
schools administration. Thus, I need to plan my activities well so that I can carry out all
the activities in time that is within the five days.
One of the activities that I have planned to carry out is to obverse whether the
school contains all the stuff that are being listed in the EDU 3101 Education and
Philosophy in Malaysia checklist. I will also going to consult the schools administration
for their roles in the school and also regarding the current syllabus, KSSR. These are
some requirement that we need to fulfill for our EDU 3101s coursework. Thus, I must
prepare some questions early before I go and interview the teachers in the school. This
is to avoid me from asking some questions that are not related to the coursework.
Besides that, I will interview some subject teachers, especially English
teachers, on how they differentiate in teaching different levels of students, which are the
upper level and lower level. This is for me to see that how they can implement different
style of teachings to different group of students. Furthermore, I will also question about
the interaction of the students and teacher in the class and how the elements of the
National Philosophy of Education (NPE) is being implemented in the class. This
question is important to ensure that all the objectives of the NPE are reached in the
school. Besides that, I am planning to question of the activities and programs that are
organized in the school to develop the students from the aspect of intellectual, physical,
spiritual, and social with reference to individual differences of different type of students
in the school.
Besides that, I will ask for permission from one of the English teachers that I
interviewed to observe the Teaching and Learning process in one of the class in the
school. This is because I want to see it myself of how teaching and learning process is

taken place in a class. I want to gain some knowledge regarding the class control so
that I can make use of the knowledge in the future.
Apart from that, I plan to interview the canteen management about the food
they provide for the students. I also will interview the head of the school administration
of the school, the headmaster of the school. The interview with the headmaster will
focus on the question about the school administration, the school history and
background and lastly the implementation of the elements of the National Philosophy of
Education (NPE) in the school. I will also interview the senior assistants of the school
about their role based on the position of senior assistants that they obtain in the school.
Lastly, I will interview some students about how the teachers teach them
about the values that is accordance to the National Philosophy of Education (NPE) in
the class.
I hope that I can carry out all the activities that I have planned before the
School Based Experience (SBE) and I look forward to gain knowledge in my first School
Based Experience (SBE).

2.2

Report of Focus Activities

Based on my preparation before the program, I have managed in carrying out

some of the activities which I have planned for my first School Based Experience (SBE).
However, we cannot do much on interaction with the students since they are having
their examination in that week.
5TH MARCH 2012 (MONDAY)

Today is my first day to come to the school that is SK St. Anne, Sarikei. I
arrived at school at 6.45 a.m. The classes in the school begin as early as 7.10 am, thus
I must come early before the guard preventing me from getting into the school. When I
arrived at the school, I wait for my friends in front of the school office. Approximately at
6.50 am, every trainee teachers have arrived at the school. The total of teacher-trainees
that carry out their SBE here is around fourteen peoples. We came from different
colleges. We then waited for the headmistress of the school in the resource centre. A
few minutes later, the senior assistant, Mr. Chua Tua Lee arrive to replace the
headmistress, who is away from the school for a few days. We then required to report
ourselves to him and gave him the authorization letter. After that, the briefing session
with Mr Chua was complete and we are allowed to walk around the school. I, together
with friends, took a tour around the school and did my observation regarding my EDU
3101s coursework. I checked whether the school contains all the items that are being
listed down in the courseworks form for example like infrastructure facilities,
administration, and cleanliness of the school. I walked around the school to search for
the physical layout of the school and the school organizations chart. Furthermore, I also
observed the school infrastructure buildings and have taken some pictures for the
requirement of my coursework. I notice that the school that I went to, contain all the
items that being listed in the check list and the school overall, have all the basic need of
a basic school.

The next activity that I did on that day was doing some interviews with the
subject head of the school. First, we went to interview the English subject head of the
school, Madam Lim Kee Kee. We asked some questions like the role of the subject
heads in the school, interaction between her with the headmistress, and the KSSRs
implementation in the school. From the interviews, I have learned that being a subject
head is not trouble-free, as he or she are expected to play important roles so that the
standard of the subject of the school is live up to the expectation. Besides that, I have
learned that the new syllabus, KSSR, is more to students-oriented rather than the old
syllabus, KBSR. Besides that, the new syllabus contain bands which is use to indicate
the students performance from time to time.
6TH MARCH 2012 (TUESDAY)

On the second day, I also arrived at the school at 6.45 am. I went to interview
some English teachers, that were Madam Alice Narawi and Madam Zurina. I questioned
on the pedagogies they used in teaching their particular classes and how they
implement the elements of the National Philosophy of Education in their teaching and
learning process. Besides that, I also asked about the interaction of the school
administration with all the teachers. From the interviews, I learnt that a teacher must
plan his or her lesson plan properly so that the pupils can understand and receive the
knowledge wholly. In order to attract the students attention, a teacher must love and
understand the students while the teaching and learning process is taken place. The
teacher should not condemn any students who perform badly in their study, instead they
should give them proper motivation to heal up their spirit. Rewards and
acknowledgement should be given to the students who perform well in the classes. I
also interested in the way of the English teachers in order to help their students to
master the knowledge. This is by emphasizing on their phonetic and speaking skills in
the early classes before the lesson take place. I also interviewed the canteen
management about the beautification program of the canteen environment and the food
provided. From the interview, the school administration played an important role so that
the canteen will provide healthy food for the body and brain of the students. Besides

that, I also learned that a good bond between the school administration and the canteen
management is vital so that they will provide good food not only for the need of the
students but for the welfare of the students as well. Besides, that, I also learned that
school administration should not ignore the canteen management as they are also part
of the school citizen.
7TH MARCH 2012 (WEDNESDAY)

Today is my third day in carrying out my SBE in this school. As usual, I went
to report myself at 6. 45 am. On that day, I went to interview the headmistress of the
school, Madam Marry Ranggau. During the interview, I questioned about the role of the
headmistress in managing the school. Aside from that, I also questioned her on the
implementation of the elements of the National Philosophy of Education that was
emphasized by the school. I also asked about the interaction between headmasters the
teachers and the supporting stuff. I also asked about the involvement of parents with the
school in some of the activities that require the support of the parents. I also ask about
the beautification program that was done by the school to enhance the environment
around the school. From the interviewed, I learnt a lot, especially the school
implementation of the elements of the National Philosophy of Education. I also learned
that the school emphasis on the developing students discipline and emotional quotient
(EQ). Furthermore, as the head of the school, the headmistress played an important
role of being the role model for the teachers in the school where she have the lead the
teachers through example, keen in her duty and she also played an important role in
monitoring the teachers for their performance so that teachers will not slack when they
did their job. Furthermore, the school also encourages the students to involve in cocurriculum activities through assembly. I also learned that unity among the
headmistress, teachers and supporting staff is very important so that they school will be
a better place and so that the school and progress even further.

8TH APRIL 2012 (THURSDAY)

Today is my forth day in the school to carry out my SBE. As usual, I reported
myself approximately at 6.45 am. As for today, not so much interviews were carried out
and the students were still on their examination, thus, I cant really make myself to the
class since there is no teaching and learning process taken place. Thus, I went to
interview the head of the Co-curriculum, Madam Roselyn Nyipan. During the interview, I
questioned her about her role as the senior assistant in the school, co-curriculum
programs that are being implemented in the school for the welfare of the students, and
how the concept of NPE can be manipulated in the school in producing students who
are excellent in co-curriculum instead of just academic achievement. From this
interview, I learnt that it is important for the school to plan the co-curriculum activities
properly for the students based on their majority interest and talent. The school also
should be the one who is responsible in nourishing the students talent so that they can
achieve good level in their respectable sports. Incentive and acknowledgement also
should be given to the students who perform well in their co-curricular activities.
9TH APRIL 2012 (FRIDAY)

Today is my last day to carry out my SBE in the school. I reported myself at
the same time as before, that is at 6.45 am. As for today, the students were done with
their examination and several classes are carried out as usual where the teaching and
learning process are taken place as usual. So, as for today, I can finally interact with the
students. I called two students from primary one classes to make them as part of my
experiment that is Jean Piagets Conservation tasks. We carry out the experiment in
the resource centre. After asking them several questions, I recorded my data and take
some pictures of them as the evidence.
Then, after the recess, the moment that I waited for long during the SBE had
finally come. I, with my friends, were given the opportunity to sit in a class, that is 5B
class. This is my experience to take control of a class, thus, as I stepped inside the
classroom, I felt blur and without any hesitation, I introduced myself to the students.

Class control is an important thing when we take over a class, and as for my first
experience, I think I can control the class eventually although I cant entertain everyone
of them. I walked around the class to get to know about the students, and when I went
to this particular group, I notice the other particular group of students felt neglected
because of lack of attention from me. From there, I learnt that it is vital for a teacher to
give attention to all of the students so that everyone of them will feel that they are not
the passenger in the classroom. I end my classes by taken some pictures with the
children. Later on that day, we took some photographs with the headmistress, senior
assistants, subject heads, and other teachers. We also took the group photos of
fourteen of us that carry out the SBE in the school We felt relieved to finally ended our
SBE in the school successfully.

In conclusion, I had carried out my activities successfully. The cooperation of

the headmaster and the school indeed has help me a lot in the coursework that I did.

New Knowledge Gained from Observation

5.1

Observation

I have observed SK St. Anne, Sarikei from many aspects and views. There
are the climate of the education process in the school and classes, environment and
facilities of the school as well as the school administration.
For the school infrastructure, this school fulfills all of the items listed in the
checklist forms except for the boarding house; this is clearly because SK St. Anne is not
a boarding school. In my point of view, I can see that this school makes use of the entire
space and compound as a learning area. I can hardly found any place in the school that
is not used for academic purpose. For example, even behind the stairs of the blocks,
there will be a learning area for the students to study there. The school also owns a
multipurpose hall. The hall consists of two basketball courts, a big stage and sitting
place that was built around the hall. It is located next to the school compound.
Multipurpose hall benefits the school citizens in term of non-academic purpose. For
example, the students can play some sports like basketball, handball, volleyball and
netball here. Aside from that, any practice for competition can take place there. For
example, during my SBE, I witnessed their Action Song practice as preparation ahead
for the competition within the district level. Besides, the school owns a canteen which is
located in the centre of the school layouts. This is perhaps to ease all of the school
citizens to buy food from the canteen where the location of the canteen is just as near
as the classrooms and offices. Aside from that, the school owns two science
laboratories and a newly-built computer lab. These facilities benefit students a lot in
term of their academic purpose. As for example, students can surf the internet to look
for additional information that is not include in the textbook. Practical activities also can
be done in the science laboratories to further enhance their understanding towards the
theories that had been learnt.
Besides, the school environment also always ready in the clean and
harmonious state. This is because of the co-operation among the students and the
teachers. All sides really appreciate the comfort that is brought by the school due to the
cleanliness.

Besides, there are many activities and competitions that are organized by the
school to increase the interest and achievement of the students in the aspect of
curriculum and co-curriculum. In this case, I realize that as a teacher, we are not only
responsible for the development of the students intellectual, but also physical,
emotional, spiritual and social. All the aspects is important in shaping a balance
individual so that the student are able to withstand any pressure and control their
emotion in many problems.
The positive work attitude of the school has reminds me to always discipline
myself to become a responsible and hardworking teacher in the future. Besides, the cooperation must be given from time to time because as a teacher, we will spend most of
the time carrying out the responsibilities entrusted in a group.

Interviews

Several interviews have been carried out during my SBE is SK St. Anne,
Sarikei. There are the interviews with headmistress, senior assistants, subject head and
subject teachers.
During my session with the headmistress and senior assistants, I learnt that
the tasks that carried out by them are too many. The role as a headmistress is to
arrange the school timetable and make sure the learning processes are carried out
effectively while the senior assistants are responsible in helping to realizing the
aspiration of the NPE.
When I was interviewing the subject head, I realize that the normal problem
that faced by the teacher is the student cannot focusing too long during the teacher is
teaching. The teacher is then must prepare the teaching aids and use them during the
lesson so that the students can pay attention and help them to memorize towards what
they had learnt.
Aside from that, I also interviewed some English teachers. Through this
interview, I learnt that English is a usual problem for the native speaker. However,
Chinese students can perform well in English. This is simply because they are born by
speaking the language in the house. , I learnt that a teacher must plan his or her lesson
plan properly so that the pupils can understand and receive the knowledge wholly. In
order to attract the students attention, a teacher must love and understand the students
while the teaching and learning process is taken place. The teacher should not
condemn any students who perform badly in their study, instead they should give them
proper motivation to heal up their spirit. Rewards and acknowledgement should be
given to the students who perform well in the classes.
As for conclusion, through this interviews, I have gain a lot of knowledge and
realize that to become a good teacher is not an easy task.

6.0 Reflection

First and foremost, I would like to say my gratitude to Allah the Almighty for
giving me the strength to complete this program. I would also like to thanks the
headmistress of SK. St. Anne, Madam Marry Ranggau for the service I get from the
administration and willing to share some related information of the school to the task
given. Through this School Based Experience (SBE) program, I have learned many new
things through the activities I carry out and gain new experience by interacting with the
teachers in the school.
This is perhaps a meaningful experience for me as a trainee teacher because
through this program, I can finally get to expose myself to the schools climate and
surrounding for my reference in the future. I have learned a lot of useful and beneficial
knowledge especially about the school administration. It is not easy to manage a
school. This is because the school is the second home for hundreds of student that
study in the school. The school is responsible to take care of the students welfare so a
proper management must be planned systemically.
I am satisfied with the hard work that is shown by the headmistress and the
teachers. They have shown a very high positive behavior in this profession.

I also

learned about the manner of a teacher when teaching a student in a class as well as the
etiquette expected for a teacher in the education process that is carried out in the
school. Besides that, the service I got from the schools entire citizen is satisfying
enough. During my SBE in the school, all the teachers are still busy with the
examination. However, they still and will to give proper collaboration to fulfill my request,
promise me an appointment to be interviewed as well as helping me to look for
information and material that I require.
I have also experience a chance to sit in a class. I made use the chance that I
got as good as possible to learn in taking control of the students in the class. It is a
valuable experience for me as this is my first time to take over a class. Class control is
an important thing when we take over a class, and as for my first experience, I think I
can control the class eventually although I cant entertain everyone of them. I walked

around the class to get to know about the students, and when I went to this particular
group, I notice the other particular group of students felt neglected because of lack of
attention from me. From there, I learnt that it is vital for a teacher to give attention to all
of the students so that everyone of them will feel that they are not the passenger in the
classroom.
In conclusion, School Based Experience (SBE) is again a very good
learning experience for me. This is because I have not only gained knowledge by
observing, interview and interaction with the citizen of the school; I also learn a lot about
a life of becoming a teacher in primary school and I also able to see from the teachers
perspective.

7.0 Final Report

School Based Experience (SBE) is carried out to give us the initial

understanding about the schools life from a perspective of a teacher. We are given a
chance to understand the school as an academic institution and the function of a
teacher in the class through observation, document reading, reflection, and interaction
with the teacher and the schools community. Thats why I have carried out the SBE in
SK St. Anne Sarikei from 5th March to 9th March 2012. This is my first experience of
attending a SBE.
On the first day in the school, I met with the PK1, as the replacement for the
headmistress who was away from the school. This time, there were 14 teacher trainees
that undergo SBE in this school. First, the PK1 briefed us about the school and let us to
use the schools resource centre as a place for us to do our works. This room is
prepared with enough facilities such as the tables, chairs, plugs and air-conditioner.
Then, we are allowed to take tour around the school and do our own
observation regarding the schools system. The observation around the school is to see
whether the school contains the listed items in the check list for EDU 3101 Education
and Philosophy in Malaysia. I have go around the school to see all the school amenities
such as learning area, hall, canteen, field, playing ground for games, resource centre,
science laboratories, computer laboratories and notice boards. I also look for murals
and motivational lines around the school. I also walk around the school to search for the
Rukun Negara and National Education Philosophy.
After that, I and my friends planned on how to prepare our portfolio. Thus, first
thing to be done was to gain information that was required by the given assignments.
Interviews have being carried out with the schools administration. I had my interview
with the headmistress and the senior assistants of the school in order to obtain the
information of the school. During the interaction, I managed to get the organization chart
of the school as well the background and history of the school. I need the information to
be put as my portfolios appendices. I also manage to obtain the table of activities based
on the type of co-curriculum that the primary school have. Besides, I managed to learn
about the roles of the headmistress and the roles of the different senior assistants.

During the interaction, I also learn more about the school system and the performance
of the schools academic. The interaction with the headmistress also enable be to learn
about the difficulty and the obstacles in implementing the elements of the National
Philosophy of Education in different aspects within the school. Throughout the interview,
senior assistants and the school headmistress have given their full co-operation in
sharing the information of the school.
Apart from that, I have also done my interviews with the students in the
school. I have prepared several questions regarding the John Piagets Conservation
Tasks. The students gave me their fullest attention and collaboration in helping me to
answer the question. Through this interview, I had finally gained the information that I
required. I can learn the students behavior when they answered my question aside
from how to give them proper direction in answering the question. As a future teacher, I
love doing this interview since it brings me closer to the real life of the children. Before I
go to the school to fulfill my responsibility as a teacher, I must first understand my
customer, the children better.
Furthermore, I also interact with upper form English teacher and lower form
English teacher. One of them has allowed us to observe when she was teaching in the
class. From my class observation, I learned about class management and one of the
teaching methods that were being used during the teaching and learning section in the
class. This observation also enabled me understand about my working place and
understand my career as a teacher in the future. Besides that, the observation exposed
and makes me realize that being a teacher is totally different from being a student. I
also learned about the KSSR; how the new syllabus work and how it is differ to the old
syllabus. I also learned about the activities being done in the class in accordance to the
new syllabus and why it is understand that new syllabus is more student oriented rather
than exam orientated.
In addition, I also have interact with the canteen management regarding the
food that they provide for the students and whether the follow the requirement given by
the ministry of education. During the interaction, I also learned how the school
administration and teachers as well as the students of the school interact with the
canteen management. During the interview, I learned that continuous interaction

between the canteen management and the school administration is indeed important in
order to have no conflict between two party and so that the canteen will able to provide
healthy food for the students.
Before going back home, I said my words of appreciation to the headmistress,
senior assistants, subject heads, subject teachers, and other citizens in the school. I felt
so happy and thankful for being able to complete this SBE successfully.
In conclusion, School Based Experience (SBE) had been a wonderful and
meaningful experience for me as a teacher trainee. This is because I can understand
my profession as a teacher much more since I experience it on the spot for five days.
Due to this, I am willing to look forward for the next SBE and gain even more
understanding and experience about my future career as a teacher.

6. Ways the students are distributed in particular groups.

2. How the materials and teaching and learning resource displayed in the classroom are
used effectively?
When I carried out the School Based Experience (SBE) in SK St Anne Sarikei, I
realized that there are varieties of teaching aids being used by the teacher when he or
she are carrying out the teaching and learning process in the classes. Furthermore, I
learned that the teaching aids are only being used for the lower level of students that
are primary one to primary three students. For example, the teacher used flash cards as
their teaching aids. This is a very good initiative for classes that require memorizing
many terms and definitions such as, science classes. In English class, a teacher can
make a matching game with the cards for the students. This is by separating the cards
for the questions and the answers, leaving the back sides blank. The students will place
the cards face down and turn them over, one by one, trying to find matches. Through
this method, the teacher can attract the fullest attention from his or her students by
giving them an interesting and attractive lesson in the class.

3.

State any materials and teaching and learning resource that is easy to be used

by the students.
Materials and teaching and learning resource that can be easily used by the
students are flash and Power Point that are functioning in the laptop. This is because
the flash that is used contains animation that can stimulate and perpetuate the attention
of the students. With that, the probability of a lesson to take place will occur because
the students can understand and receive what is delivered by the teacher. Besides that,
song that is played in the flash indirectly give the clear main idea to the students. They
will easily memorize the contents of the lesson by only singing the song again compare
to memorize the contents by only reading it.
Apart from that, with the usage of Power Point, the teacher will not waste his or
her time to write the answer from the beginning to the end. The contents can directly
display on the white screen clearly. Apart from saving time, the students will not having
any chance to make noise compare to the situation where the teacher is writing on the
blackboard. After the teacher finishes with his explanation, he can end the slide and ask
the students to recall what they have learnt recently. Thus, the remembrance of the
students towards the lesson contents will be more deep and clear.

4. Are the students are given chance to use the learning resource that is based on the
ICT?
Yes, this is because the ICT is one of teaching aids that is so effective in
teaching and learning process. During my SBE in SK St Anne, I learned that the school
owns a computer lab that can be benefited by the students in the school. If the teacher
wants to bring his or her students to the lab, he can just simply book the lab from the
staff that take care of the lab. The amount of computers in the lab is high enough for the
usage of all the students. For example, during the lesson in the computer lab, the
teacher can simply give the direction for the students to play the CD attached the
textbook. The flash contents in the CD contain activity and games that is attractive to
attract the students. Aside from study, the students can play some games contained in
the flash.

5.

How far the students are encouraged to involve themselves actively in the lesson

activity?
The students are encouraged to involve themselves actively in the lesson activity
by simply giving them proper motivation before the lesson take place. In this situation,
the teacher in the class plays an important role in deciding whether the students will
keep focusing on the lesson or not. A teacher must be clever to control every student in
the class. This is by not being too nice with the student, instead by implementing some
strict-minded teaching to the students. For example, the teacher could set a rule like if
this particular student cannot perform well in his study, he will be punished and if he can
perform well, he will be rewarded and given the acknowledgement for his hard work. By
using this method, the student will be more involving themselves actively in the lesson
activity. This is because aside of gaining knowledge, there will be rewards and
accolades waiting for them if they can achieve the level of excellent in the class.

6.

Ways the students are distributed in particular groups.

.

The distribution of the students in the particular groups is should be well-

organized and follow the requirement of the condition. For example, if there are 40
students in the classes, they can be distributed into 4 particular groups. Thus, every
group will have 10 students and they should consist of the students with different levels
of performance. The rational of this action is to ensure that within the group, there will
be some clever students and low-performance students. This is to balance their
performance level and give the chance to the weak students to learn from their clever
friends. Furthermore, these clever students indirectly can help the teachers to give their
opinion and help regarding the weak students.
