Meals: Elevenses
In the United Kingdom and some other Commonwealth realms
elevenses is a snack that is similar to afternoon tea, but eaten in the
morning. It is generally less savoury than brunch, and might consist of
some cake or biscuits with a cup of tea or coffee. The name refers to
the time of day that it is taken: around 11 a.m. The word elevenses
is seen as a little old fashioned.
In Colombia, the term las onces (the elevens in Spanish) is
used to describe a similar meal.
Among Chileans, the tradition was known as under the same
name, although in modern times, it has shifted in most respects to
later in the afternoon, more closely reflecting the pattern of British tea
time.
In Australia and New Zealand, it is called morning tea or
smoko (often little lunch or play lunch in primary school). Choice of
foods consumed at morning tea varies from cakes, pastries or
lamingtons, or biscuits, to just coffee.
In the Royal Australian Navy it is commonly referred to as
Mornos.
In popular culture
For elevenses, Winnie the Pooh preferred honey on bread
with condensed milk.
In Middle-earth, it is a meal eaten by Hobbits in addition to
second breakfast.
Paddington Bear often took elevenses at the antique shop on
Portobello Road run by his friend Mr. Gruber and usually received
some sound advice about his current thorny problem at the same
time.
The term appears extensively throughout the novel Dont Stop
the Carnival by Herman Wouk, in which various characters gleefully
partake of elevenses at every opportunity, usually accompanied by
alcoholic beverages.
The Lang Elevenses consists mainly of Johnnie Walker Red
Label and the participants would generally get rowdy by the hour of
1:00 p.m. It was sometimes known to continue past the start of
afternoon tea. (After Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia)

Welsh
Welsh rarebit is traditionally a savoury sauce made from a mixture of
cheese and various other ingredients and served hot over toasted
bread. It is a dish most commonly served in the UK and the US. The
original name(s) apparently date from the 18th century in the UK.
Various recipes for Welsh rarebit include the addition of ale, mustard,
ground cayenne pepper or ground paprika and Worcestershire sauce.
It may also be made by blending cheese and mustard into a sauce
bchamel (a sauce Mornay). Some recipes for Welsh rabbit have
become textbook savoury dishes listed by culinary authorities
including Escoffier, Saulnier, Hering and others, who tend to use the
form Welsh rarebit, emphasizing that it is not a meat dish.

6. Identify the Conditional Sentences in the text below, and then turn
them into Type III If-Clauses.
Some may wonder at the timing of elevenses in regard to the timing
of lunch. If elevenses occurred at eleven, wouldnt lunch at noon
seem like too much food? Actually, lunchtime may happen later, or
alternately elevenses may occur sooner. Lunch in the UK is often
lighter, especially if people take food at elevenses, or it may occur as
late as between 2-4:00 pm, and be called dinner. The later meal
taken at night may be referred to as supper. If people have switched
primarily to a three meal a day lifestyle of breakfast, lunch and dinner,
these may still be served somewhat later, with elevenses and
afternoon tea making up small snacks during the day.

Lets Laugh!
A 7 year old boy and his 4 year old brother are upstairs in their bed
room. The 7 year old is explaining that it is high time that the two of
them begin swearing. When his little brother responds
enthusiastically, the 7 year old says, When we go down stairs for
breakfast this morning, Ill say Hell and you say ass. The 4 year
old happily agrees. As the two boys are seating themselves at the
breakfast table, their Mother walks in and asks her older son what he
would like to eat for breakfast. The 7 year old replies, Ah hell, mom,
Ill just have some Cheerios. WHACK! The surprised mother reacts
quickly. The boy runs upstairs, bawling and rubbing his behind. With a
sterner voice, the mother then asks the younger son, And what
would YOU like for breakfast? I dont know, the 4 year old blubbers,
but you can bet your ass its not gonna be Cheerios.
