DESIGN BASIS OF
FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEM
FOR LAURUS LABS PRIVATE LIMITED,
PARAWADA VILLAGE, VISHAKHAPATNAM
1) SCOPE :
M/s Laurus Labs Pvt. Ltd. are installing, Unit-iii for manufacture of bulk drugs at
Parawda village at Vishakhapatanam. The proposed facilities will be installed in
phased manner, as under.
Phase-I
The phase-I consists of MB-1 and MB-2 plants for manufacture of bulk drugs,
Solvent Recovery Plant no. -1 along with its tank farm, utility-I and II for MB-1& 2,
QA and QC block, boiler house having two boilers along with Coal storage yard,
transformer, DG and panel block along with diesel oil tank, CCOE Phase-I tank
farm, CCOE drum store, raw material and finished goods storage block, Phase-I
non CCOE tank farm, Canteen, Admin, ETP, Fire water pump house and fire
water storage tank etc.
Phase-II
The phase-II consist of MB-3, MB-4, MB-5, MB-6, MB-7, MB-8 plants along with
its utility blocks, Solvent recovery plant-2 along with its tank farm, phase-2 CCOE
& non CCOE tank farm, phase-2 ETP, pilot plant and PT lab etc.
It is proposed that the entire complex consisting of Phase-I & II, be protected by
Fire Protection System with one central pump house and fire water reservoir.
The fire Water network around phase-I and phase-II shall be designed to take
care of water requirement for both the phases.
This document is developed to provide minimum requirement of the fire
protection system to entire complex.
2) TYPES OF FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEM :
The following types of fire protection system are envisaged.

Pressurized automatic Fire Hydrant, Hose Reel and Monitor System.

Portable Fire Extinguishers in all blocks.

Fire Alarm and Detection System.

3) FIRE WATER DEMAND CALCULATION :

Overall the complex can be considered as Ordinary hazard Category for
designing fire protection system as per earst while TAC regulation.
3.1) Water Demand based on total no. of equivalent hydrant in the complex.
The total no. of equivalent hydrant protecting Phase-I and Phase-II area
will be more than 200 Nos.
As per the preliminary drawing, total nos. of equivalent hydrants are as
under.
Single headed hydrant (Phase-1:-57, Phase-2:- 19)
=76 Nos
Fire Escape Hydrant (Phase-1:- 40, Phase-2:- 36)
=76 Nos
Monitors
(Phase-1:- 12, Phase-2:- 4)=16*4=64 Nos
___________
Total
216 Nos
The pumping capacity required as per TAC= 273M3/hr x 3nos. =
810M3/hr.
3.2)Water demand as per water required for MVWS System for CCOE or /
SRP Tank farm
MVWS water demand for one tank = 600LPM (See Annexure-I for
calculation)
12nos. of Tanks are located in one dyke.
Water requirement for simultaneous cooling of 12tanks
= 12x600
= 7200LPM
= 432M3/hr.

tanks

In future for Phase-II additional 12nos of Solvent tanks under CCOE will
be installed adjoining to the dyke of phase-I CCOE tanks. The distance
between Phase-I and phase-II tanks in different dykes is less than 15M.
In order to reduce water demand, considering layout of the tank farm, if
we consider any one tank on fire, then all tanks fed by MVWS system of
tank on fire and all adjoining tanks in two adjacent rows have to be
cooled. Thus at a time, 12nos of tanks to be cooled simultaneously. Thus
the water demand for 12nos of tank will be 501M3/hr as mention above.
4) DESIGN PHYLOSOPHY :
The fire protection system shall be designed to fight two major fires considering
one major fire in tank farm area and other in plant area.
5) DETAILS OF PROPOSED FIRE HYDRANT/MONITOR/HOSE REEL SYSTEM :
5.1 Fire Pumps
Based on maximum water demand, details of fire pumps required are as under,
Two electrical and one standby diesel engine driven fire pump having capacity of
410m3/hr @ 88m head.
Two nos. of Jockey pumps (one main and one stand by) having capacity of
25m3/hr each @ 88m head.
The fire pumps shall have flooded suction and suction velocity be limited to 1.5 to
2 m/s.
The size of the common delivery header be based on aggregate pumping
capacity of 820m/hr and velocity in delivery header shall be less than 5m/sec.
The fire pumps shall have approval from TAC accredited agency. Emergency
power supply shall be provided for fire pumps and fire pumps be housed in pump
house which is in safe area.

5.2 FIRE WATER RESERVOIR:

Fire Water storage capacity required = 2Nos x 410 m/hr x 2 hours. = 1640 m.
The fire water reservoir shall be in two compartments.
5.3 FIRE WATER NETWORK:
i) Network and hydraulics.
The fire water network shall be designed for aggregate pumping capacity of 820
m/hr. Adequate size of tapping shall be provided from fire water network of
phase I area for connecting to fire hydrant system of phase II area in such a way
that future network around phase II area shall also meet criteria of 820m/hr of
pumping capacity. The fire water network for phase I area, shall be laid in closed
loops around protected areas. The entire network shall be checked by hydraulics
using PIPENET software.
5.4 FIRE WATER MAINS:
The fire water headers shall be laid above ground in closed loops around
protected areas. In case of UG headers, there shall be clear cover of 1M from
finish grade and 1.5M at road crossing. RCC Hume pipe of NP2 class shall be
provided at each road crossing. coating & wrapping for U/G pipes shall be
provided.

Wherever above ground mains are used in fire water network, the same shall be
located at a distance of more than 6M from any building/structure. Further the
mains shall be supported at every 5m /6m distance and painted with fire red paint
confirming to shade 536 of IS: 5.
Isolation Gate valves shall be provided at strategic locations to ensure isolation
of any section of network without affecting the flow in the rest of network. Valve
pit as per TAC regulations shall be provided for UG isolations valves.
All fire water system piping shall be hydro tested to test pressure equal to 1.5
times design pressure.
