UW-Eau Claire Foundation Receives $10,000 AT&T

Innovation Award to Expand Blugold Beginnings Program
Program Inspires First Generation Students to Consider and Enroll in Post-Secondary Education
EAU CLAIRE, Monday, November 17, 2014 The UW-Eau Claire Foundation was presented today with a
$10,000 AT&T Innovation & Investment Award to help expand the Blugold Beginnings program to reach more
students and inspire young people to attend college.
The AT&T donation will enable the Blugold Beginnings program to expand its afterschool programming to serve an
additional 50 students in the Eau Claire Area School District, Altoona School District and Augusta School District.
The funding will also be used to partner with Eau Claire County 4-H to complete robotics projects during the

We want every student to know and believe that higher education is not only a possibility for them, but that it is
available and attainable at UW-Eau Claire, said Chancellor James C. Schmidt. Thanks to the support of AT&T,
we are proud to be able to expand the Blugold Beginnings program to provide that college connection for more
students in our area.
The purpose of Blugold Beginnings is to educate and inspire students, especially underrepresented, low income or
first generation students, to believe that a post-secondary education is important, attainable and available at UWEau Claire and other institutions. The program works with local schools to provide a comprehensive college
th
connection for 5 graders through graduating seniors.
Preparing our young people for success in higher education not only benefits our students, but our communities
and our state as well, said Scott T. VanderSanden, president of AT&T Wisconsin. Blugold Beginnings is a great
program that is showing students the possibility of college. We are proud to help them expand to reach even more
teens and help prepare them for future success.

Blugold Beginnings hires current UW-Eau Claire students as mentors for students in elementary through high
school. The mentors develop relationships with students, act as role models and provide college knowledge to
mentees. To learn more about the program, please visit: http://www.uwec.edu/blugoldbeginnings/.
