Did you know that November is Diabetes Awareness month? Recent estimates project that as many as 1 in 3
American adults will have diabetes in 2050, unless we take steps to Stop Diabetes. Nearly 30 million American
have diabetes, including 8.1 million who don't know it. That is why the ShopRite of Montague is offering a FREE
Glucose Screening on Saturday, November 15th from 10am - 2pm. No fasting or appointment is necessary, just
stop on by! The more you know, the more you are in control. There are risk factors for Type 2 Diabetes that you
cannot control, age, sex, genetics, but there are things you can do to lower your risk. Below are lifestyle changes
that you can make to lower your risk of developing diabetes.
!
1. Eat a healthy diet! Limit the amount of fats and include more fiber, whole grains, fruits, veggies and lean
meats. Not sure where to start? Stop by and set up an appointment with Kelly! Kelly is a Registered Dietitian and
provides nutrition information to ShopRite associates, customers and community partners...for FREE!
!
2. Get moving! 30 minutes of activity per day helps lower the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58%.
Try walking around the parking lot on breaks. When at home, walk around the house during commercial breaks.
Need more ideas? Stop by and talk to Kelly.
!
3. Monitor and/or lower your blood pressure and cholesterol.
!
4. Quit Smoking! Kelly will be in the breakroom to support the American Cancer Society's initiative, The
Great American Smokeout, on Thursday, November 20th from 1 - 4pm. If you're interested in quitting smoking or
know someone who is, stop by for free information and support.
!
5. Manage your weight and BMI. Need help getting started? Stop by the dietitian's office.
