I: I am very pleased to be here for this important conference and to join with all
of you in making clear that social inclusion and development for all, really does
depend upon the status of women and opening wide the doors of opportunity
for women and for all people is the great work of our time. And I specially want
to thank the president for his strong commmitment . Mr. President, Ive Heard
many speeches by many presidents over many years, some I know very well,
and I must say, the passion, the strenght, and comitment that your words
convey, were extremely welcome.

ustedes para enfatizar que la inclusin social y el desarrollo para todos, en
verdad depende del estatus de las mujeres. El abrir las puertas de la
oportunidad para las mujeres y para todos es la gran labor de nuestra poca.
Especialmente quiero agradecer al Presidente por su fuerte compromiso. Seor
Presidente, he escuchado muchos discursos de muchos presidentes durante
muchos aos, a algunos los conozco muy bien, y debo decirle que la pasin, la
fuerza y el compromiso que sus palabras transmiten son extremadamente
bienvenidos.

I: Even today not enough leaders understand that all the success that we seek
for the people who we serve will be enhanced by the kind of commitment you
heard from the president today So I want to thank you mister president, and I
well remember when I met with you and the First Lady shortly after you were
elected, even then, you understood that Perus economic strenght, which had
been considerable, the growth rate, was going to be enhanced if social
inclusion were at the heart of your agenda, and then at the heart of social
inclusion, was a commitment to women and girls.
E: Incluso hoy, no hay suficientes lderes que entiendan que todo el xito que
buscamos para las personas a las que servimos ser enriquecido por el tipo de
compromiso que oyeron hoy del Presidente. As que quiero agradecerle Seor
Presidente, recuerdo muy bien cuando me reun con usted y la Primera Dama
poco despus de que fue elegido, y desde entonces usted entenda que la
fortaleza econmica de Per, que haba sido considerable, la tasa de
crecimiento, iba a ser mejorada si la inclusin social era el centro de su
agenda, y si al centro de la inclusin social estaba un compromiso haca las
mujeres y nias.

I: So, for me, this is a very welcome ocassion and I wish to thank you and your
government, particularly the Minister for Social Inclusion and Development, for
making this a national priority, for having a week devoted to social inclusion and
it is always a pleasure to see the First Lady of El Salvador, another country that
is also commited to this important work. And to share the stage wth someone

whom I admire so much and Ive had a chance to work with, Michelle Bachelet,
who is now doing extraordinary work at the UN women is a great honor.
E: As que para mi esta reunin es algo muy positivo y quiero agradecerle a
usted y a su gobierno, especialmente a la ministra de Desarrollo e Inclusin
Social por hacer esto una prioridad social y dedicar una semana a la inclusin
social. Y tambin, siempre es un placer ver a la Primera Dama de El Salvador,
otro pas que tambin est comprometido con este importante trabajo. Y es un
gran honor compartir el estrado con alguien a quien admiro tanto y con quien
he tenido la oportunidad de trabajar, Michelle Bachelet, quien ahora est
haciendo una labor extraordinaria en ONU Mujeres.

I: Women drive economic growth, as producers and as consumers. I used to
say that if you looked at the global economy before the great economic
recession it was like an inverted triangle and at the bottom of that triangle were
women. Women who made the decisions about what to buy and when. Women
who were not only in the informal economy doing the work that keeps families
and communities going, as the president said in relying that story from his
grandfather, but also in the formal economy. So, we understand, those of us
who are here today, the importance of women having the opportunity to fully
participate in society and in economies.
E: Las mujeres rigen el crecimiento econmico como productoras y
consumidoras. Sola decir que si se miraba a la economa global antes de la
gran recesin econmica, era como un tringulo invertido y al final del tringulo
estaban las mujeres. Las mujeres que hacan las decisiones sobre qu comprar
y cundo. Las mujeres que no slo estaban en la economa informal haciendo
el trabajo que mantiene a las familias y a las comunidades, como lo dijo el
Presidente al contar esa historia sobre su abuelo, pero tambin en la economa
formal. As que los que estamos aqu entendemos la importancia de que las
mujeres tengan la oportunidad de participar completamente en la sociedad y la
economa.

I: Ill confess this to you, if you dont tell anybody, but when I get tired of reading
hundreds and hundreds of pages of depressing reports abput whats happening
somewhere or another. I either watch decorating shows on Television, or I read
what we call shelter magazines that tell you how to decorate yur home if you
have the time to do so. So, I opened this international decorating magazine
callled World of Interiors and there mustve been twenty pages about the
textles from the Andes. And how incredible, the workmanship was, and the
artistry, And the creativity. And then today I got to see some of that for myself.
But this shows you how quickly in todays interconnected global economy, one
woman with a needle and determination can give hundreds of women quality
Jobs stitching, literally stitching, new hope into their families futures, and new
economic growth for their country.

E: Les confesar esto, si no le dicen a nadie. Pero cuando me canso de leer

cientos y cientos de pginas de reportes deprimentes sobre lo que est
pasando en algn lado o en otro, veo programas de decoracin en televisin o
leo revistas de diseo interiores que te dicen como decorar tu casa si tienes el
tiempo de hacerlo. As que abr una revista internacional de decoracin, World
of Interiors, y debe haber habido veinte pginas sobre los textiles de los
Andes. Y qu increble es el trabajo, y el arte, y la creatividad. Hoy pude ver
eso yo misma. Pero esto demuestra que tan rpido en la economa global
interconectada de hoy, una mujer con una aguja y determinacin puede darles
a cientos de mujeres trabajos de calidad, bordando, literalmente bordando,
nueva esperanza en el futuro de sus familias y en el crecimiento econmico de
sus pases.

I: Restrictions on womens economic participation are costing us massive
amounts of economic growth and income in every region of the world. In the
Asia Pacific, for example, its more than 40 billion dollars in lost GDP EVERY
YEAR.
E: Las restricciones en la participacin econmica de las mujeres nos estn
costando cantidades masivas de crecimiento econmico e ingresos en cada
regin del mundo. Por ejemplo, en Asia Pacfico, se pierden ms de 40 billones
de dlares en PIB anualmente.

I: We are entering what I like to call the participation age, its a new era in
human history, where you can be a poor woman in the Andes or a poor man in
Africa and you can connect to the rest of the world. That connectedness means
that every indivdual now has a chance to contribute to the global market place
and, so lets use what we now have, to make it posible for otherwise
marginalized people to contribute in more and better ways- As in this
participation age we need everybody we can possibly muster to be on the side
of peace and prosperity, and I believe, Is going to benefit us dramtically.
E: Estamos entrando en lo que yo llamo la era de la participacin, es una
nueva era en la historia de la humanidad donde puedes ser una mujer pobre en
los Andes o una mujer pobre en frica y puedes conectarte con el resto del
mundo. Esa conectividad significa que cada individuo ahora tiene la
oportunidad de contribuir al mercado global, as que usemos lo que hay ahora,
y hagmoslo posible para que otras personas que de otro modo estn
marginalizadas, contribuyan en mayor y mejor manera. Y en esta era de la
participacin necesitamos de todos los que podamos convocar para que estn
del lado de la paz y la prosperidad, y yo creo que eso nos va a beneficiar
dramticamente.

I: Its not enough to say we want a future where every person has the equal
opportunity to fulfill his or her God given potential, we have to have a plan for
how we get there, so lets recognize this are difficult issues that can only give
way with our commitment of time, resources, and attention. But im absolutely
confident that Peru is on the right track and I look forward, Mr. President to
following with great interest, the progress tthat you are making on behalf of the
peruvian people, and especially, Perus women.Thank you very much.
E: No es suficiente el decir que queremos un futuro en el que cada persona
tiene igualdad de oportunidades para alcanzar el potencial que Dios les dio,
tenemos que tener un plan para llegar ah, as que reconozcamos que son
temas difciles que slo se pueden enfrentar con el compromiso de nuestro
tiempo, recursos y atencin. Pero tengo mucha seguridad en que Per est en
el camino indicado y Seor Presidente, anhelo seguir con gran inters el
progreso que est haciendo en nombre de los peruanos, y especialmente en el
