Functiebeschrijving

The PhD candidate will join the project "Enhanced Re-analysis of 16 Years of GPS Data for Weather,
Climate and Solid-Earth Applications" funded by the Netherlands Space Office
(www.spaceoffice.nl). Networks of continuously operating GPS stations have been used since 1992
for monitoring plate tectonics and surveying. These networks have emerged as a powerful tool for
measuring atmospheric water vapour in weather and climate applications. The last decade has seen
significant but uneven progress in analysis methods, resulting in discontinuities in existing time-
series of GPS data. Therefore, the first goal of this project is to produce homogeneous and consistent
time-series of integrated water vapour and station positions by re-processing existing networks of
GPS receivers. The second goal is to improve the analysis techniques and reduce systematic errors
due to equipment (changes) and local effects, in particular for low-elevation tracking and
atmospheric applications, beginning with an in-depth investigation of systematic errors. Two or
three novel approaches will be implemented, tested, and if successful, applied in the analysis
dataset. The final goal is to interpret possible trends and signals in the integrated water vapour
time-series in co-operation with the relevant user communities. Part of the work will be carried out
at KNMI, De Bilt (www.knmi.nl/research). The project will also contribute to international re-
analysis efforts by IGS and EUREF, as well as other international initiatives.

Functie-eisen

For this project we seek a PhD candidate with a background in Geodesy, Aerospace, Geomatics,

Earth Observation, Orbital Mechanics, Mathematics, Physics, Meteorology or related sciences. Prior
experience in GPS data processing using either the Bernese GPS software or GIPSY/OASIS II, a
solid background in data analysis, and experience with Fortran and MATLAB will be highly
appreciated. The candidate should be able to work in a systematic and conscientious manner, to
operate in an international team and report on his/her work in fluent English. An affinity with
geodesy, geophysics, meteorology and atmospheric sciences will be highly regarded as well.

Arbeidsvoorwaarden

The successful candidate will be granted a temporary employment contract with the university for
one year (12 months). At the end of this year there will be an evaluation of performance which will
result in a go/no go decision for an extension of the contract for a further three years (36 months).
Within the total four years of the contract, the candidate is expected to produce a dissertation (PhD
thesis) of sufficient quality for him/her to be awarded a PhD.
TU Delft offers an attractive benefits package, including a flexible work week, free high-speed
Internet access from home, and the option of assembling a customised compensation and benefits
package (the 'IKA'). Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for
Dutch Universities.

Organisatie

Delft University of Technology

Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) is a multifaceted institution offering education and
carrying out research in the technical sciences at an internationally recognised level. Education,
research and design are strongly oriented towards applicability. TU Delft develops technologies for
future generations, focusing on sustainability, safety and economic vitality. At TU Delft you will
work in an environment where technical sciences and society converge. TU Delft comprises eight

Afdeling

Aerospace Engineering

Department of Earth Observation & Space Systems (DEOS)

The mission of DEOS is to advance technology and knowledge related to the monitoring and
modelling of the Earth's geometry, topography and gravity field in space and time, and to develop
associated applications in society and science. The technical-scientific challenges of, and
opportunities for, mapping Earth using space-based, ground-based and airborne observation
systems are related to advances in measurement system technology, mathematical and physical
modelling, and integrated monitoring systems. Accordingly, the integrated research programme
ranges from theory development, data acquisition, modelling, data processing and validation to
interpretation and data distribution.

The programme includes space systems engineering activities related to the development of
integrated micro-instruments for Earth observation, the design of and feasibility studies for future
Earth observation missions, as well as scientific support for industry and various space agencies.
Support activities in each field include organising and conducting measurement campaigns, and the
establishment and maintenance of a geometric research infrastructure.
