PROTECTION OF TRAINS STOPPED BETWEEN STATIONS

1. In Absolute block system protection shall be arranged by driver and guard as per
GR.6.03 when a train is stopped in the mid section and cannot proceed further due to
any reason.
2. When train is stopped in the section and cannot proceed further, the driver shall
switch 'ON' the flasher light immediately and give four short whistle [0 0 0 0 ]
repeatedly showing a' RED' flag by day and a 'RED' light by night towards the
guard.
3. The guard shall acknowledge the driver's signal in the same manner and the driver
shall give a long whistle after getting guard's acknowledgement.
4. The train shall be protected by the driver in the front and by the guard in rear by
placing four detonators.
5. On BG the first detonator shall be placed at a distance of 600 metres from the
obstruction and three detonators 10 meters apart not less than1200 meters. .[ i.e 600,
1200, 1210 and 1220 meters ].
6. In case of MG / NG one detonator at 400 meters from train and three detonators 10
meters apart not less than 800 meters [i.e. 400, 800,810 and 820 meters.]
7. It is the responsibility of the driver of a goods train without guard, light engine and
coupled light engines to arrange protection on both front and rear sides.
8. If a banker is available, the driver of the banker engine shall arrange protection in
rear.
9. The guard before proceeding to protect in rear shall ensure that the tail board during
day is properly placed, tail lamp and side lights during night are burning brightly.
10. The guard before going for protection fix a red flag by day on the side light bracket
or on the handle of the BV / BV door which shall be clearly visible to the driver and
During night turn the side light red towards the driver
11. The guard or a competent person going to arrange protection shall walk with stop
hand signal to stop any approaching train and take a stand 45 meters away from the
last detonator with stop hand signal .
12. The guard shall keep a competent person in rear before coming to discus with driver.
If no competent person is available, he shall immediately go back after the
discussion. the driver and guard shall walk on left hand side of the formation [BV to
engine]
13. On double / multi lines when adjacent line is obstructed, the driver shall
immediately switch 'ON' the flasher light and arrange protection of adjacent line
front side first.
14. The guard shall ensure that the adjacent line is properly protected in case of any
obstruction and then proceed to protect in rear..

15. During night or in thick and foggy weather when visibility is impairing, the driver
shall also lit the fusee and fix it near the adjacent track so as to clearly visible to the
driver of the train coming on the adjacent line.
16. Same procedure shall be adopted to stop the train on adjacent line to send the
message quickly in case of any accident when adjacent line is not fouling and in
such case the guard need not stay with driver to ensure.
17. The driver of a train coming on the adjacent line when observes engine flasher light
or lighted fusee shall immediately switch 'ON' and 'OFF' his engine flasher light for
three times as a token of acknowledgement.
18. After acknowledging reduce the speed to 20 Kmph by day and 10 Kmph by night,
stop short of the obstruction and render possible assistance to the affected train.
19. The driver of the train on adjacent line shall stop the train at next station
immediately and inform the occurrence to the SM
20. On twin single lines when the adjacent line is obstructed, the driver and guard shall
arrange protection first for the adjacent line front and rear and then same line.
21. In case of mixed gauge, more number of detonators shall be placed on a common
rail.
22. In Automatic section protection shall be arranged as per GR. 9.10 by placing three
detonators at 90, 180 and 190 meters from the train.
23. Automatic section double line when adjacent line is obstructed, the driver and guard
shall ensure to protect the adjacent line as per GR.6.03 by placing four detonators at
600/400,1200/800,1210/810 and 1220/820 meters from the train.
24. During total interruption of communications on double line and single line, three
detonators shall be placed at 250, 500, and 510 meters from the train as specified by
SR.6.02.
25. In electrified area when any EMU is detained due to any defects and cannot be put
in to working within 10", it shall be protected immediately as per GR.6.03.
