Intro: DIY Taser +30,000V

Ever wondered how fun it would be to zap someone with a taser? Now you can. :D
If you follow the instructions you should be able to get a good shock out of this that not to lethal but I'm sure its not that hard to step this up from a good shock to a
powerful weapon so be responsible with this and use common sense when choosing who to shock (don't go around shocking old people, small children or any one with a
heart condition its just a bad idea).
Now that thats out of the way the taser we will be building sends out about one shock per second probable around 35,000-40,000+ volts at an estimated .01 milliamp
(millionth of an amp) the shock is about enough to cause you to jump back a few feet if your not expecting it. Voltage and amperage are estimated since i don't have the
equipment to accurately measure it.
P.S. sorry about the low quality pictures and bad lighting my good camera was KIA I'm working on getting a replacement camera to take better pictures
UPDATE: i got a new camera enjoy the high res pictures

Image Notes
1. come get some

Step 1: Parts list

most of the parts cam be found at radio shack or a hardware store
Electrical Portion
ignition coil 12v - you can get this from an old car at the junk yard for about $5. for this project you want to get one with only 2 leads. these come in all shapes and sizes
so you may have to ask the people working there to help you. also try to save the mount you'll need it later but its ok if you cant
12v relay 12v relay - radio shack should sell this
1000 u Farad capacitor 1000 u Farad capacitor
1 u Farad capacitor 1 u Farad capacitor
non conductive switch- i made the mistake of buying a metal switch and get shocked every now and then
wires- with descent insulation
electrical tape
wire capes
12v power source - i used 8 D-cells for this
soldering stuff
Mounting components
2 foot long, 1 inch thick, 2 inches wide board
6 inch long dowel 1 inch wide
small screws

Image Notes
1. note the positioning of the leads on the relay since the wiring diagram doesn't
have the leads labeled just the location of the leads

http://www.instructables.com/id/DIY-Taser/

Step 2: Wiring
now that you've got all the parts we start attaching 6 inch lead wires to all used the leads on the relay this will make your life simpler. connect all the wires as shown in the
diagram when you finish connecting everything flip the switch to on and touch the line out and negative line out wire. if you did it right you should be very awake(AKA
shocked).
UPDATE:3/11/08
right so i was going through and looking at this and i though I'd add a small section on whats happening here with the wiring just to clear things up.
1)The switch is flipped completing the circuit.
2)The the relay is closed and the 1 u farad capacitor and coil begin to charge while the 1000 u farad capacitor simultaneously charges
3)when the 1000 u farad capacitor becomes charged the relay breaks the connection and the coil and 1 u capacitor discharge shocking what ever may be touching the
coils line out and the negative line out
4)the 1000 u capacitor discharges and the cycle repeats at step 2 through 4 until the switch is flipped
UPDATE:6/6/08
ok so imagine this is your panel on the back of the relay
-1-2
-3-4
-5-6
|7|8
these numbers should be printed on the relay however may be missing
when positive and negative are connected to 7 and 8 the relay should trip
when no current is running through 8 and 7 relay allows electric flow from {1 to 5} and {2 to 6}
when current is flowing through 7 and 8 the relay triggers switching the connection from {1 to 5} to {3 to 5} and {2 to 6} to {4 to 6}
if all this is true with your relay you have the same type of relay other wise you may need to rewire stuff
next 8 and 4 connect to the large capacitor on the negative side (side with NO indentation running around the rim.) 5 and 7 connect to the other side of the large
capacitor.
1 connects to the positive side of the small capacitor and 6 connects to the negative side.
2 and 3 connect to nothing
other things to check look for shorts around the relay theres a lot of wires really close together
Notes
the different colors of the wires is simply to make it easer to differentiate the wires from one another
you might consider using a larger capacitor in place of the 1000 u farad capacitor since i noticed the coil isn't fully charged when it discharged so the resulting shock is
like rubbing your socks on the carpet and touching something metal as opposed to sticking your finger in a wall socket.

http://www.instructables.com/id/DIY-Taser/

Image Notes
1. not used
2. not used
3. the colors of the wire mean nothing i just did it to help distinguish the different wires

Step 3: Mounting
by this point you have all the electrical components so your able to mount it how ever you like but this is how i did it. Mount your coil 4-6 inches from the front of the 2*4
using the mounts you salvaged from the car if you weren't able to salvage it use zip ties or duct tape. Next mount the 6 inch dowel 1-2 inches from the rear of the coil. for
the batteries i mounted them on the bottom of the 2*4 but this does not work so well you can do it that way or try to come up with a better way to mount them. the switch
was also a little tricky since mounting it to the dowel would be hard. for this step i mounted the switch to the side plate on an old pair of safety glasses then mounted that
to the dowel. Finally you should have about a foot on 2*4 left this is there to counter the forward weight of the coil on mine I attached a string to help keep it level.
Notes
the batteries were falling out so i have since added a hinged section of plexiglass with a small latch

Image Notes

Image Notes
1. The coil
2. relay
3. the larger capacitor
4. trigger
5. bracket on the coil will need some bending to be attached to board

Step 4: All the wires

finally you should have a bunch of loose wires hanging off use the electrical tape to help consolidate the wires so they don't snag on any thing then your done.
have fun zapping people.

Hey,
I've reached ur taser invention b/c i was looking for something to light up my Spud Gun. I've been useing hair spray and even just pure Butane gas and the
spark lighter on 3V didnt work.... So here i am for the 30kV.
I have a few questions about it :
The capacitors are 1uF and 1000 uF, but at what Volts?
How come u charge them directly from the batery and in other guides they need a charger (liek this http://www.instructables.com/id/Coilgun-Handgun/ i wana
built it too), and works on almost the same tech....Tasers are made from photocams and need the charger...
Whats with soo many bateries ? Its a total of 12V ? or each ...
Can it get me killed ? :)) .... very important
Thnx Alot

the capacitors i used are 50 volts and 35 volts if i linked to the right part when i made this. not sure why other guides use a charger i have charged
directly from battery's before and it was a convenient solution for this. you could probably substitute 2 big 6 volt batteries but you do need 12 volts, the
batteries are taking the place of a car battery. the total battery output is 12 volts (1.5 volt d-cell * 8 = 12). the shock from this is the same as the shock
from a spark plug on a car maybe a little worse. the only way this could kill you is if you had a heart condition and ran the voltage threw your heart or if
the pain.shock scarred you to the point of having a heart attack. if you are a healthy 9 to 40 year old potato canon building guy then don't worry about it
to much.
on a different note it you are planing to use this to ignite fuel the design that this device uses does not provide an optimal shock for ignition. I have used
this to ignite paper socked in lighter fluid but if you you the design i am attaching as a photo them you could get a much more powerful shock with the
trade off of refire time.

lrjblaze says:

how many volts does THIS taser give off? is it 30000 like the featured instructable?

autonomousoperations says:

Aug 8, 2010. 1:45 PM REPLY

It should be around 30,000 but the exact voltage depends on the coil you use. I don't have anything capable of measuring the momentary voltage
so I had to use technical data from similar products to estimate.

autonomousoperations says:

it's not the voltage that kills people its the amperage. plus its and instantaneous shock that repeats every .75 seconds or so. with self defense tazers you
have a continuous electrical current which still takes up to 10 seconds or longer to take some one down to a point where they cant move

BlueX273 says:

Oct 3, 2009. 12:49 AM REPLY

Actually, it takes more than amperage to kill someone; the voltage decides. For example: 1.5 volts at 0.1 amps isn't enough, but 30 volts at 0.1 amps
will kill you. Therefor, amperage is dangerous and voltage increases the danger. Also, when I said "You could kill someone with that!" I really mean
"Shock them so hard that they pass out for awhile".

autonomousoperations says:

Oct 3, 2009. 2:11 AM REPLY

ok and some people pass out when they get a shot or give blood etc. i could hold onto the discharge points and over power the impulse to let go
it hurts a bit it will make you jump if your not expecting it but its pretty safe if you only let it get you a few times. besides its barely 0.01 milliamps.
not amps.

I would not ever advise anyone to use a 12 vDC device to assault or defend themselves from assault. All you will do is make someone mad enough to
possibly really hurt or kill someone. You are only producing around 30-40 DC amps at the very maximum, for a short duration and at very low reserve power
unless you had a car battery with it. Be careful who you use these on, someone who is determined to hurt you cannot be stopped from a 12 vDC coil! It
would probably just make things worse if they were serious about hurting you unless you were faster and immediately high-tailed it from the scene and never
seen them again. The only device that I have been able to make to stop someone is made from 120/240vAC capacitors (along with many other
components). Many slight disadvantages though, like only one shot before needing a re-charge from 120/240vAC power supply source(unless you have
multiple capacitors, etc.), need to find way to keep charged for more than 48 hrs(capacitors drain off eventually, some quicker than others, depending on
environmental conditions, etc.), very, very deadly(do not play around, treat capacitors as if they are charged unless you discharged yourself). And must have
exactly the right type capacitor/s and a way to efficiently deliver line to ground (or ground to line). These are a lot more complicated than a 12 vDC shock and
I am afraid if I post it it may hurt someone. So in all seriousness be careful who you shock with 12vDC or 120/240vAC even if for different safety reasons. I
especially hope nobody's serious about defending themselves with a computer mouse size homemade device, don't take me wrong I do admire the thought
and ingenuity to fabricate such a device, I just hope you are not depending on this in a life or death situation. This is how great inventions/inventors are
made, so by all means, dont stop.

autonomousoperations says:

I've shocked myself accidentally more times then I can count well monkeying. I've also shocked about a dozen people in addition to myself but most of
them only once since its not exactly fun to be shocked. no one has ever needed CPR the worst shock you usually get is enough to make you pull your
arm away uncontrollably or jump back uncontrollably with some singed hairs at the point of contact but singed hairs aren't common. To be safe just don't
make the electricity flow threw the heart.

What voltage capacitors are you using? 12v? You may be able to slightly rework the circuit to use higher voltage capacitors... they would probably charge a
little slower but they'd give more of a kick I think. I'm not exactly an electronics expert, and in all actuality I don't think I would have put the time into this
project to design the circuit. I'm more of a mod-it kinda guy than a build-it-from-scratch kinda guy. Ironically when I build something from a modified design, I
usually build it from scratch haha.

Dude, you could make a much simpler "Super Taser" by connecting a 12v battery to a relay oscillator, which will send a pulsing current to the primary
winding on an induction coil. For the coil, I suggest 100 windings for the primary, and 1,000 for the secondary. Then, use the two wires coming from the
secondary as the probes. Big spark. HUGE shock! Although, I am not liable for whatever you do with it, so I advise you to take caution handling it.

autonomousoperations says:

May 30, 2008. 9:52 PM REPLY

hmm the capacitor blew... the small one or the big one? cause the batteries shouldn't have enough voltage to blow the capacitors to blow the capacitor
so the only thing that might have caused this is the positive charge shorting into the rest of the circuit one thing you can do in the short term is hook your
power supply directly to the coil you wont have the repeated shock you get with the relay but you will get a nice shock out of it even if its shorting back in
to the circuit

Lonewolfajk40 says:

Jun 2, 2008. 11:30 AM REPLY

I'm using a 12v rechargable battery in place of all the D batteries, and it was the 1000uF capacitor that blew :( I'm using a cool looking switch (red,
lights up when you flip it on), could that be messing things up?

autonomousoperations says:

Jun 2, 2008. 6:05 PM REPLY

ok so judging from the specs the battery shouldn't have enough volts out put to blow the 1000uf capacitor theres a chance the relay doesn't use
the same wiring scheme which would allow the high voltage from the coil to travel directly into the capacitor ill take a closer look at just how the
relay is wired and Produce a more detailed wiring plan.
