Roundup

from the Chapter Chair in Salt Lake City

Hello from Salt Lake City.

We are all getting very excited about the upcoming Standards of Excellence
conference, hosted here in our city. There will be lots to see and do in Salt Lake I will be
sending out an email with information about places to see and things to do in the area.

Our set-book show of Fantasy and Nonsense has 16 entries. The opens during the
conference at the J. Willard Marriott Library and the winners will be awarded their prizes
then as well. I am working on the catalog and expect to have it for sale at the same time. The
catalog will have pictures of all the entries, in color too!

The GBW national Horizons exhibit will also be on display at the Utah Museum
of Fine Arts, which is a short walk from the Marriott library. I look forward to seeing you at
Standards.

Dear Rocky Mountain Chapter Members,

It is fall and GBW Standards season. I look forward to traveling to Salt Lake City
to attend the presentations, visit vendors, and see fellow binders but I am also especially
excited to see the Fantasy & Nonsense Rocky Mountain Chapter exhibit. Kudos to Ethan and
everyone who helped make it happen.

Sammy Lee continues to bring great workshops to the Denver area. One that I
was fortunate to attend in August was Hidden Treasures: The History and Technique of
Fore-edge Painting, Jeanne Bennetts class that was held at the Denver Botanic Gardens.
Everyone was able to complete lovely paintings hidden under gold book edges. (Photos inside.)

In an effort to continue the theme of decorated edges of text blocks, I will give a
class on marbled book edges during our fall gathering in the Denver area. The date and
place are not yet determined, but I will send out an email to the membership as soon as I
know the details. Also, I welcome ideas about what members would like to see and where
you would like to meet for future gatherings. Please send them my way.

I am fortunate to participate in the Colorado College Press committee this year.
There are some really fascinating events planned for the fall, including Fred Hagstrom,
Professor of Printmaking at Carleton College, who will give a lecture and workshop in mid
October, and Debra Weier, a book artist who creates pop-ups and movable books, who will
be offering an evening workshop in November.

Ill be in touch soon. Happy Autumn!

GENERAL SCHEDULE

Horizon
Selections from the Guild of BookWorkers - Exhibition

Wednesday, the 10th

October 5 to December 30

(Opening Reception: October 11)

This juried exhibition showcases the current work of members of the Guild
of Book Workers, who were invited to interpret horizon as broadly or as narrowly as they wished. Contemplating apparent and metaphorical horizons,
Guild members used a broad range of techniques to produce works from traditional leather and design bindings to experimental structures that demand a
re-examination of the horizon of the book form itself.

Utah Museum of Fine Arts, Marcia & John Price Museum

Building, University of Utah

held at:

*Co-sponsored by the Guild of Book Workers; the Rocky Mountain Chapter

of GBW; the Book Arts Program (University of UT); and the Utah Museum
of Fine Arts - Marcia & John Price Museum Building.

Fantasy and Nonsense

GBW Rocky Mountain Chapter Exhibition
September 7 to November 4

Bookbinders develop ideas for material, form, and symbol from the texts
and imagery they bind. The books in Fantasy and Nonsense were created
by members of the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers,
and represent diverse, unique design solutions to the same text. Fantasy and
Nonsense is the union of the work of James Whitcomb Riley, 19C American
master of verse in dialect, and Berrot Hubrecht (aka Robert Buchert), whose
whimsical wood engravings recall classic childrens illustrations of the late
Victorian era. Fantasy & Nonsense was printed from handset type on
handmade paper at Tryst Press in Provo, Utah, in an edition of 230. The
exhibition was juried by Pamela Barrios and Susan Makov.
held at:

J. Willard Marriott Library, University of Utah, levels 1 & 2

Let Me Count the Ways

The careful sewing of folded pages together is the heart and soul of
building a strong book. There are at least 100 different ways to sew signatures together to make books, including sewing over tapes, sewing over
cords and sewing without supports. In this 3-day workshop, you will sew
about 40(!) sewing variations on thin cards which simulate sewing through
the fold on signatures, a technique developed by Betsy Eldridge. You will
learn about oversewing and tacketing, and Asian side stitching. Kitty will
bring examples of various bindings so that you will understand better how
the cover attachment is integrally related to the sewing style. For homework, you will sew at least one complete book using one or more of the
techniques from your cards. This is an intense but rewarding workshop.
You probably should have sewn at least one book in signatures before you
take this workshop.

Artist Bio: Kitty Maryatt

Kitty Maryatt is Director of the Scripps College Press and Assistant Professor
of Art at Scripps College in Claremont, California. She has taught Typography and the Book Arts at Scripps for 26 years. In this bookmaking class, the
students write their own stories, develop imagery, hand-set metal type,
print the collaborative books by letterpress, bind them in limited editions of
about 100 copies and sell them. They have published 52 titles to date and
have 56 standing order patrons. She also teaches a Core Humanities class to
sophomores called From Materiality to Immateriality: The Coming of the
Artist Book. Kitty owns Two Hands Press in Playa Vista, where she designs
and prints books and produces bookbindings for clients as well as continuing her calligraphic work. She also creates her own one-of-a-kind artist
books. She is VP for Programs for APHA (American Printing History Association), is on the Board of Directors for CBAA (College Book Art Association), is
a founder of the Society for Calligraphy in Los Angeles and a long-time
member of the Guild of Book Workers.

$60 (payable to the Guild of Book Workers) to: Sammy Lee, 4049 S. Niagara Way, Denver, CO
