Fiberglass, Milkfish Scales, Additive

Introduction
Fiberglass refers to a group of products made from individual glass fibers combined into a variety of forms.
The researchers were interested in this study because fibreglass is emerging as one of the common materials used in
various construction and production activities. The researchers wondered whether the milkfish scales could serve as an
additive in the fibreglass as substitute to its expensive counterpart and still maintain its durability. The goal of the
research is to produce fiberglass with milkfish scales as an additive matting for fibreglass production without reducing its
quality in order to decrease production costs and recycle fish scales.
This research wanted to test wether fishscales can be used or can not be used as alternarive additive in the production
of fibreglass.
Methodology
Collection of materials (fiber matting and milkfish scales) was done. The fiber matting was cut into 4x4 inches sheets in
preparation for the production of fiberglass. The Milkfish scales were then dried. During the cutting of the fiber matting,
preotective gears such as lab gown, gloves, mask and goggles were required since the fibers cause irritation to the skin.
Fiber matting and fish scales were carefully weighed and proportionalized to fit the 0%, 25% and 50% ratio by mass
standard of the study. Materials were then sent to the fiberglass maker to create 3 variations (0%, 25% and 50% scales)
and 3 replications of each variation. Materials were then brought in for tests. A compression test was done within the
city engineering premise and the heat resistance and water absorption was done within the schools laboratory. The
heat resistance test was conducted by measuring the time lapse for the flame to burn each fibreglass. For the water
absorption test, the fibreglass with 0%, 25% and 50% scale were measured while dry. The samples were then
submerged completely for 24 hours then measured and calculated for the water absorption. The results for the
compression tests are as follows: 125kN for 0% scales, 90kN for the 25% scales and 65kN for the 50% scales. For the heat
resistance test, the 0% scale recorded 1:34 minutes, the 25% scale recorded 1:41 minutes and the 50% scale recorded

2:26 minutes. For the water absorption test, the 0% scale absorbed 0g, the 25% scale absorbed 3.38g and the 50% scale
absorbed 7.33g.
Conclusion
Three parameters were tested for durability of the fiberglass, water absorption test, heat resistance test and
compression test. Based on the test conducted, the fiberglass with 25% milkfish scale showed 3.38% water absorption
and the one with 50% scale showed 7.33% water absorption after 24 hour of soaking. Heat resistance test revealed that
the 50% scale mixed fiberglass burnt after 2.26 minutes of exposure to flame with the 0% scale burnt after 1.34 minutes
of exposure. Compression test likewise revealed that 25% scale mixed fiberglass collapses with 90kN while the pure one
collapsed with 125kN mass. The test showed that milkfish scale can be an excellent additive in the production of
fiberglass.
